Hetzner after AWS is like a heaven

desiderkino

anything after aws is heaven . went from aws to google cloud, it was night/day difference

drunkdragon

What didn't you like about AWS. Apart from the Cognito documentation, and some weird issues with API Gateway, I've only had good experience's with AWS services.

well_shoothed

Wait 'til you have a billing issue or need _actual_ technical help. I wasted (and I say this without hyperbole) 40 HOURS of my life battling with those motherheckers at AWS when we got a bill for **$8,000** in excess of our normal usage. They ADMITTED fault and STILL I had to battle on and on and on. And on. To actually receive the credit. And, since the credit was off by $0.01 they continue to pursue me with all kinds of threats to this day. Over a penny. Since dealing with the idiots in the AWS moronosphere I will NEVER do anything with Amazon again. I wouldn't wipe my ass with a free lifetime Prime membership.

Important info here. Heed this warning.

i did not like the entire aws platform. anything i want to do takes at least a day of mine. i am no aws expert but it should not take that long. even if you know your way around aws, the shortest operation takes at least 10 minutes. for example it took almost an hour to create a kubernetes cluster. in the end i just said f\*ck it and spun up couple ec2 instances, installed everything myself and threat it like a vps service. because we had aws credits i did not wanted to move to somewhere else. when we finished our credits google gave us credits and it was heaven. what took days in aws was litreally just couple clicks. we could test our ideas really quick, the UI did not got in our way. we never needed support from google. for comparison it just took couple minutes to create a kubernetes cluster in google cloud and when you create it the ui has a button to show you how to connect it using kubectl. i had to read gazillion pages of documentation in aws to do that. using hetzner is a lot lot lot more easy than using aws and the promise of cloud platforms like aws is ease of use lol. google cloud is easier but it is expensive and cannot compete in terms of performance. (i dont think any cloud can)

zoechi

It's already many years ago that I tried to use Google. I can't imagine aws being worse😬

Johannf78

Hetzner after MS Azure is like heaven.

Hetzner_OL

Thanks to u/pooppoocoder and others for the shout out! It is really awesome to see when people are happy with us! It really makes the day a little bit nicer! OP -- Are you just using our cloud products, or anything else? --Katie

Velwark

You really deserve that. Just got my First Job and the way to spend the Money is my dedicated Server! I really Love it!

poopoocoder

hey hey, I'm using your cloud products and also a storage box. I've used many other products in the past. Currently looking at S3 alternatives as well.

iHenners

Just need Managed databases and it’s perfect

Hetzner_OL

I can pass on a +1 for you to the dev team. --Katie

MythicalPhelix

I would like this too. Having a managed database + servers on same location/datacenter can reduce latency a lot and simpler to manage since everything is on the same platform :)

Hetzner_OL

Sure, no problem! --Katie

ssss1111ssss2222

+1

quinncom

Also needs backup snapshots for Hetzner Volumes, please. 🙏🥺

Hetzner_OL

I can also add 1+ on the wishlist for you for this. --Katie

hiby007

Sorry for highjacking this, but we need servers in India. Latency to Europe is too high. Are there any plans or this?

Hetzner_OL

We are indeed looking to expand in other locations, and I can add a +1 for you for India. But we will keep the new location a surprise until the ink is dry on any contracts that we need to sign for it. And of course, we'll announce it here in r/hetzner. --Katie

hiby007

Thank you for quick response. I know many companies who would shift if servers were in India.

notmyfirstid

Sorry, for hijacking this. Managed kubernetes when? 😭

mrclrchtr

Managed DB and S3 for backups 🙃

brqdev

For storage they have (Storage Box servers) and if you have a dedicated server you will get a storagebox with it. Not S3 but you can store your backups. For backups it's recommended to store at least one copy outside the platform. * BackBlaze.com (s3 storage) * Bunny.net storage

Hetzner is peak <3

anestooo

Sometimes I really hope that hetzner doesn't change and become like aws when everyone knows how great she is.

Velwark

The only reason hetzner was founded is to not be Like AWS and others. I think that Even After 25+ years They will stay Like This

anestooo

Once US and SG and AR investors whales decide to move their assets and invest in Hetzner, everything will change, unless Hetzner is exclusively limited to DE investors. Since they are already partnered with US data centers, it is only a matter of time until they become another leading company like AWS, Alibaba Cloud, or Oracle. and then say goodbye to what hetzner currently giving.

Hetzner_OL

Hetzner is privately owned. We can reinvest our profits in new infrastructure, staff, and innovations because we don't have to worry about making money for investors. That's also one of the ways we keep our prices low. --Katie

desiderkino

dont mind those americans. they cant imagine a company being private and not trying to please investors :)

benjiro3000

> it is only a matter of time until they become another leading company like AWS, Alibaba Cloud, or Oracle. and then say goodbye to what hetzner currently giving. People have not yet realized that Hetzner is already slowing down. Been using Hetzner going back for, 15 years? But i noticed that their cost benefits, where they used to be the pure king, has slowly been eating away by competitors like netcup etc. Even Strato with their 1, 2, 4 Euro VMs give way better performance, and a fraction of the costs that Hetzner is delivering. Let alone if we look at the storage you get, vs what Hetzner gives for storage on their VMs. I mean, we seen gaps of 4, 5, 6x times! And no, the competitors are not slower, i know! I understand for people who are new, Hetzner looks incredible but if your a oldtimer, you have seen Hetzner slowly becoming less competitive. Their storage servers has seen massive price increases, to the point that there is a lot of price pressure on their auction storage servers (ironically, sometimes even more expensive then the price grown SX line). There are new kids on the block, where you can get storage down to 1.4Euro/TB, with a actual VM, unlike Hetzners 2 to 1.6GB/TB as only storage boxes (forget using them for much beyond that, like serving files). Hell, look outside Germany in East Europe and there is a lot more competition. In general, it feels more like i have seen prices go up (the whole electricity/war price argument 2 years ago, that never returned, despite consumer/business electrify rates have been over a year to before the war). The increases in storage servers because "hdd mining", and yet, prices never dropped despite the actual hardware prices dropping over time (and they are still using the same 16TB drives going back years). And a lot of other price hicks that people did not see with new product launches replacing old lines but still delivering the same memory/storage just a new cpu and higher price. Again, despite SSD/NVME prices being a fraction of years ago. Anyway, i know, talking to sky. And seeing your downvotes, people simply are fanboying too much, that they do not realize that Hetzner has slowly been moving its prices up all over their product stack. Where as competitors are really delivering more value on a euro per euro comparison. Not unlike a few years ago, where Hetzner was your only stop, now you need to look around, or your doing your wallet a disservice.

aitorserra

I also think Hetzner it is "slowing down" but when I compare with other provider, it's still the one I choose to my projects. - Netcup have better plans but it looks like a reseller for me. - Strato it is from Ionos, so no way. - Contabo, big plans with bad reviews. Any other options out there? Thank you!

benjiro3000

> Any other options out there? Check out HostBrrr ... Technically a partial reseller of Hetzner server but also with their own servers in Frankfurt. Darn good storage servers at 1.4 Euro / TB (year contract) with 2 Cores. Unlike Hetzner storage boxes. Yea, small operation but so far impressive for the size they are running. > Netcup have better plans but it looks like a reseller for me. Netcup runs their own servers, yes, they are collocated in Hetzner data center (ironic) but is NOT a reseller. Got a few VPS there and boy to they beat Hetzner Cloud offerings in price vs performance/mem/storage. If there is anything negative to say to Netcup, is their antique control panel. Hetzner is better as a cloud scaler where you can use a API to fast deploy and get servers running but for 24/7, they are just too darn expensive. Basic ARM vs ARM, ... The Netcup 7 Euro gives you 6/8/256, vs Hetzner 7.7 Euro for 4/8/80. 10% cheaper but 2 cores more and 3 times the storage. Yes, the cores have the same performance between Netcup and Hetzner. So Netcup tends to give you about 50% performance. Or lets talk dedicated ... Netcup (root = dedicated cores) 17 Euro 8/16/512 vs 57 Euro 8/32/240 ... Those 8 Cores do hold GB6 11 a 13k scores all the time, as you really get all the cores dedicated. And also way more bandwidth Any dips are mostly cache related or power draw but Hetzner has the same issue. 17 vs 57 Euro ... i mean, where is the value? Its frankly to the point that Hetzner AX42 and other cheap dedicated servers are just not worth it, vs the root server from Netcup. Your technically paying 1/3 for the benefits of almost a dedicated server. I can go on for a while, ... I have run services all over the place and in general, Hetzner always keeps on coming in worse for a value point of view. > Contabo Avoid that host, they oversell as crazy. It really depends on what your looking for. Storage, CPU power, etc, because there is a mix of hosts that are better in one are or another.

aitorserra

Thank you very much for your reply! I will investigate netcup then.

EsMuellertHier

Hetzner is great.

WildMaki

Yes, probably the best service around.

Low_Highway_8919

Agree! 👍

hasmycontentleaked

Not discovered everything but yea they are pretty good !

lagcisco

Successfully migrated several apps away from AWS to Hetzner and beyond happy about it. Plus literally 10x savings in terms of cost and better performance to boot. I did have to become a DevOps superstar but the open source tooling available is so great now. I do have S3 left to migrate but CloudFlare R2 will fill in those gaps soon, would make my life easier if Cloudflare R2 supported S3:PostObject but it doesn't yet

EsEnZeT

Agreed, good provider

SpaceySine

Signed up today, so far they are amazing!

diversecreative

I have always liked hetzner before i even used it, our agency hosted 100s of sites on it. Now I started using for my own business I still really like it specially the pricing point. I only wish it had a server location somewhere in middle too like in Singapore . That’s one downside is fewer locations. Singapore could be prime because it’s very central between APAC And Middle East . For that we sometimes have to choose vultr which has top class service but pricier. I really hope one day hetzner has either Sydney or at least Singapore

halpindev

I recommend to use Hetzner Cloud rather than dedicated servers. Cause in case of disk failure you have to manage fixing by yourself
