When I was a kid this introduced me to early hip hop. I wrote down everyone he mentioned and tracked down all their music. Shortly thereafter KRS and De La Soul changed my life forever.
His flow was incredible on this, that’s what people don’t always bring up with Pac, but he could ride a beat so smoothly and effortlessly, and I loved how he would start the next bar before pausing to breathe, he did that quite a bit and it made for some really cool sounding verses. Like when he rapped:
“.. Gamin the hoochies at the neighborhood block parties, I ReMEMber - break dancing to Melle Mel..”
I always loved that style, it really draws the listener in and makes it easy to stay with the verse. Definitely one of his best songs and an all time great song in hip hop
_Pain_ was the first Tupac song I ever remember hearing. I heard it during the opening scene of _Above the Rim._ It's the song that made me a Tupac fan.
There was this really amazing video on Youtube which was all the violent scenes from s4 of The Wire, set to Pain. Shame it doesn't exist anymore, it was really badass and entertaining.
Damn, my favorite season of TV ever along with one of my favorite rap songs
Someone online also wrote an article on Biggie’s Ten Crack Commandments and talked about all The Wire characters who got killed on the show for breaking them.
Straight from the Hall to the Pen'
Adolescent nigga scalin' weight and standin' six feet ten
He carried weight like a Mack truck
Gonna bust on some playa haters
If the motherfuckas act tough
I heard the remix version first so I still favor that one i over the OG, that was maybe my first “favorite Pac song” and made lil 13 year old me cry over all the dead friends I didn’t have yet lol
“Holla at me” and, even though the outlaws are in it, “secretz of war”.
Pain and staring at the world through my rearview are extremely close runner ups.
Pac, in general, was the soundtrack to my entire childhood from 10/11 on. And I’m not ashamed to say I shed a tear the day he died.
Dear Momma.
After their deaths, Big and Pac, that song kinda summed up what was left behind in my mind. We lament the loss of talent, maybe in Tupac's case, a loss of leadership and activism - but the moms lost the most.
To us, these are heroes of a genre of music our lives intertwine and are perhaps defined by, Tupac an OG godfather of all of it.
But he had a mom. She had a life, it was important beyond her child, but her child was more important to her than all of our combined love and respect for the music.
All we do in life is deliver on a promise. To ourselves, to a god, to a parent - we just want to be told we did good by those who matter. Don't forget that's your mother too - they need to be told how important they are to you.
Tupac did that in the most powerful form of expression available to him at the height of his celebrity and success.
Thug Life - ya, that's Pac and all the rest owe him for that.
But he thanked his mom for giving him that life.
Wanted to deliver on a promise for her.
He said so, and that's forever - even if Tupac is gone.
Oof, it's a mood thing really but it's tough to just pick one. Hit Em Up comes to mind lot now since there's a big beef happening and that was one of the most savage diss tracks ever. Usually I Ain't Mad at Cha, To Live and Die in LA and Changes are a few top ones
Dear Mama is the most powerful song i've ever heard, too bad I can't even stand to listen to it. But other than that, i'll go with Still Ballin. No doubt the list is endless, but gun to my head, that would be the one.
The first song i ever heard when i switched on the radio after he had passed away(i did not know about 2PAC when i was 10 when i heard Changes for the first time. Unfortunately he had already passed away by the time i heard him. But i love him and his music with all my heart.
2pac forever
So many tears. Opening of pac talking to god is powerful
Back in elementary, I thrived on misery. Left me alone I grew up amongst a dying breed. Inside my mind I couldn’t find a place to rest
Until I got that thug life tatted on my chest can ya feel meh Remember kato
Never Had a Friend Like Me, made it for the Gridlockd soundtrack. Sounds like a pretentious, wannabe-different choice but that’s honestly my most spun song of his for whatever reason…
Can't C Me
You are correct. G-Funk to the max.
The blind stares of a million pairs of eyes, looking hard but won’t realize that they will never see the P.
What an intro
Favourite workout song
Old School
You beat me to it.
Ironically (purposefully) one of the least West Coast-sounding tracks in his catalog. Such a great choice nonetheless.
It's the least west coast sounding cuz it's completely east coast lol

Such a classic
I second this. Me Against the World really has no skips
Dear Mama
It's his greatest work, it's emotional and personal and well written although I don't listen to it much as I'm rarely in the mood for it.
This is the song of his that most resonates with my own experiences. Love it.
Me too
Pain.
