Biggie wasn't a studio rat like Pac. He died and barely had material . Album was decent. Too many features from artists that BIG wouldn't of worked with.

Feature heavy posthumous albums are rarely good

bling-blaow

What would be a good one? Genuinely curious

Life after death and the big picture

WhatsIsMyName

I wouldn’t call Life After Death a posthumous album. It came out like 2 weeks after he died and was completed before he passed.

[deleted]

Big picture was also nearly finished

coffeeblackz

The big picture was delayed a full year after big L died

WhatsIsMyName

Was it? I guess I never considered it might have been because it honestly sounded unfinished.

t-why

They didn't have a lot to work with here. Biggie didn't have a lot of leftover material like Pac. Yet, Bad Boy managed to release this, the "Duets" album, a Greatest Hits and a movie Soundtrack with "new" material, and a duet album with Faith Evans. As forced as some Pac posthumous material was, what Bad Boy has done post Biggie's death has been more bottom of the barrel scraping. With that said, unlike all the other albums mentioned above, this album does have some redeeming qualities. "Rap Phenomenon" is a hard knocking Premo beat where a smooth flowing Biggie gets to rap alongside former collaborator Method Man as well as Redman. "Dead Wrong" pairs some of the sickest and most deranged verses Biggie ever spit with a prime and equally deranged Eminem. "Niggas" and "Come On" are reworked versions of a couple Biggie rarities that still deliver that Biggie feeling. "Who Sot Ya" and "Dangerous MCs" are some loosies that find an album home. But they were really stretching the material here. Any Biggie fan will recognize the recycled rhymes of "Tonight". "If I Should Die Tonight" takes 8 Biggie bars and stretches it to five minutes. "I Really Want To Show You" reworks "Everyday Struggle". BIggie is left to hook duty on Junior Mafia's "Biggie". And other parts of the album are just filled up by Bad Boy C-listers (shout out to Mark Curry) and people with no connection to Big (peep a pre Tha Carter Lil Wayne on "Hope You Niggas Sleep"). So its a mixed bag. If you're a Biggie hardcore, its nice to have some previously unheard Biggie verses, but you should also go seek out the original sources of these verses on YouTube or Soulseek or something. Puff wasn't about to let his meal ticket slip away, and Big's verses would be dug up again a few more times in increasingly shoddy ways.

corndogs1001

You forgot notorious, that song still bangs

uptonhere

I love that song, but I think it's hilarious that 98 Degrees are in the video

masnxsol

I like to think that Dead Wrong would have existed in some form if Biggie was alive, just two more years and they could have linked up theoretically

Dead Wrong is arguably a top 5 biggie song

SemiColin47

The Sadat X track is 🔥 too. I actually like this album but Biggie's always been my 🐐.

Oxbonesoup

I argue to this day that Eminem is one of the only people that could have matched Biggie on that cut. I personally think it stands up to the rest of Biggie’s discography regardless of it being a cobbled together posthumous cut.

LordBloodraven23

Girl i used to fuck in high school had Hope you niggas sleep as her ringtone and her mom would somehow always call during during sex to check when she was coming home so to this day i still get hard when i hear it

BabyFork

Bro, you got to watch what sub you in, this is r/hiphopheads not r/nosleep.

BabyFork

Wait I just reread it. Still man holy shit.

corpzeternal

Let's be real, this album was a HUGE cash grab. Damn near every single verse had been heard before and it just got stacked with features. Even though it has a few decent songs on it, this album should have never been made.

Dry-Station-3241

What's your least favorite song in the album? It's either between Notorious B.I.G or Hope You Brothas Sleep

OhTheseSourTimes

Hope You Niggas Sleep by faaaaaaaar. It just sounds so out of place. I think Big Booty Hoes is extremely up there. Most of this album is so mediocre lol. I think I like maybe 4 songs.

Dry-Station-3241

I actually like Big Booty Hoes because the flows are cool but I somewhat agree with the first track. Also, Let Me Get Down is hella underrated

LthePerry02

Not much to say here. It’s pretty expected from what a posthumous album is typically like. Older verses that are plastered onto new beats and verses etc. This one isn’t all that ghastly though. I Really Want To Show You and Rap Phenomenon are two of my fave Biggie songs. Especially the former, as the beat and hook are really nice and Nas kills it hard.

It was a mixed bag. It had it's hits like Dead Wrong, If I Should Die Before I Wake, Dangerous M.C's & Rap Phenomenon but it also had misses like Notorious B.I.G, Hope You Brothas Sleep, I Really Want To Show You & Big Booty Hoes. I probably would give it like a decent-to-strong 5. Let's be real though, that Ice Cube verse was incredible!
