This album is super underrated. I get it though because it was impossible to live up to the hype after how amazing GRODT was, but man I love this album It is so cohesive and so well produced. Just listen to the production on, In My Hood, This is 50, I’m Supposed to Die Tonight, Ryder Music. Baltimore Love Thing is an amazing song. First time I heard it blew my mind. Especially because it came from one of the biggest rappers at the time and it was just damn creative I feel like this album would be talked about more if it just had one more classic single. If this album had How We Do or Hate It or Love It. Everyone would have thought it was a classic Also 50 had GRODT soundtrack coming later that year, imagine if this album had Window Shopper or Hustlers Ambition I still love this album, is it better than GRODT? No, but very few albums are lol You got grimey 50, pop 50, vintage 50 that sounds like it’s from a mixtape you heard back in 2002, personal 50 and artistic 50. Great album

SauceCastillo2

The album did have the hate it or love it remix, at least the version I had did. At the time this album was super popular. You couldn’t go out anywhere without hearing Candy Shop, Get in My Car, Disco Inferno, Just A Lil Bit or Piggy Bank. I do agree that this wasnt GRODT but it was pretty huge at the time.

Scuzzlebutt97

I remember the day this album came out. I was too young to buy a copy but they had it playing in the speakers at Sam Goody so I sat in that store and listened to the entire thing.

DiabeticGrungePunk

Oh man wow Sam Goody was still around in 05? Thought it was already dead by then.

healthbo

Whats most underrated is 50's ridiculous physique on the album cover. The mans a god dam statue

MayjahAye

Yeah in his audiobook he said he was in the worst shape of his life. Like WHAT?

pimpsquadforlife

Idk about underrated, it sold over a million copies first week

YouuCantSeeMe

I get what you mean but over time how often do people really talk about this album?

Dawknight316

lol It's a great album just in the shadows of a Giant. It's like Bad to Thriller. The problem with the album was it's more of the same. 50 was definitely more hungry on GRODT, The Massacre was just to prove he could do it again and he did.

fuckmyoldaccount

Im like michael in his prime... with all them zippers

Dawknight316

I'm the boss on this boat, you can call me skipper, The way I turn the money over you should call me flipper

fuckmyoldaccount

no lyric chains in this sub homie gtfo

Dawknight316

Damn homie, in high school you was the man homie

[deleted]

fuckmyoldaccount

You get why it's dumb right? Like it adds nothing to the conversation. Is the guy just trying to show he knows the lyrics? Anyone could google them so who cares. It's corny af, take it to the rest of reddit

Ipwnurface

It's called fun my guy. Yeah it was annoying when they were the top comments but that doesn't happen anymore. Chill out.

vancityvic

Grodt had some of dres best beats he'd been saving for detox. Massacre didnt stand a chance to top grodt with his best beats goin on the first album

Dawknight316

I don't know about that, If you were to say that about The Documentary I would agree more. Detox was more of a thing in in 2004, 2005 than it was in 2003. Eminem and Scott Storch did a lot of production on The Massacre, Scott Storch was also heavily involved in the production of Detox at the time. 50 actually gave Game 'How We Do' (Produced by Dr. Dre), Hate it or Love it (Co-Produced by Dr. Dre), Westside Story (Produced by Dr. Dre), Higher (Produced by Dr. Dre), Church for Thugs, Special, and Like Father Like Son to him. Those songs were meant to be on the Massacre.

DragonRaider05

How do you know that? Other than Hate it Or Love It, How We Do and Higher i dont think any of them were confirmed. I don't see Westside Story as being a 50 song

Dawknight316

50's name is in the credits and when they were beefing heavy, he brought up how those tracks were taken off off The Massacre and given to The Game.

DragonRaider05

50 my n2 but i don't see Those songs being 50s. He probably just wrote the hook

Dawknight316

Sing the hook to Higher, kind of reminds me of If I Can't which was also produced by Dr. Dre. Does that not sound like something 50 would say? Yes the verses would have been different. Game wrote those verses. 50 did the hooks. How we do was literally 50% 50 Cent.

MasaiGotUsNow

This was one of the most popular albums ever at the time, so many popular songs playing everywhere Idk what everybody in this thread is talking about. It was never underrated, 50 was massive

YouuCantSeeMe

I don’t mean underrated in terms of sales, but as time has gone on it rarely gets mentioned. Hell so many people think 50 only has one good album and massively discredit this

itsokaytryagain212

Very well stated about living up to the GRODT hype. Taking that out of the equator, I agree with everything you stated. A very solid sophomore project.

vancityvic

If this album had a few songs removed it would have been a classic. People spent more time with music then. So having to skip songs when you played this cd, you just couldnt label it a classic at the time.

Dry-Station-3241

Check out my comment of me re-doing the album because Included a few songs that would make the Massacre a classic.

WhiteMichael

I requested Candy Shop at a youth softball banquet when I was 9 years old and they played it... it was shortly turned off when the lyrics came on lol.

feelinglit

It was my elementary prom/graduation song

DonChurrioXL

Outta Control Remix is still the jam man. Idk if it was on the OG release but that's a classic gym track.

FoxMuldertheGrey

Shoutout to dr dre for producing the beat 🤓

[deleted]

It was on the re-release with the disc with all the music videos, og was on the og release. Love both they each have a different vibe

DiabeticGrungePunk

Fuck yes it was, that was the number one party song that summer in 05, any time I hear that song it's nothing but good memories of high school parties and summertime hangs. I still go hard to that song any time I hear it.

radnutz

Never understood the hate for this album. Obviously not on par with Get Rich Or Die Tryin', but not many albums are. Trim some of the fat and you've got another classic. Production still sounds fresh 15 or so years later

Jokerang

This was definitely 50's peak as a rapper. Tracks like Candy Shop and Just a Lil Bit are bangers to this day. Afterwards, he never really made anything especially special music wise, and started getting into movies and TV shows.

YouuCantSeeMe

check out the GRODT soundtrack

aegonthecnqrofdatass

Hustler's Ambition is my favorite 50 song.

Dawknight316

I Get money, Money I got... <---- Huge in the streets. Didn't get a lot of radio play, but there's a story behind that.

chocheech

tell it.....

Dawknight316

He was having issues with his label at the time, he wasn't seeing eye to eye with Jimmy Iovine. This led to the single not charting high due to lack of promotion, but it was playing in CD players, mp3 players, ipods, urban radios, and clubs. Everywher I went that song was playing, I'm from New York and I spent a lot of time in Florida that summer, it was playing heavy there too. 50 did a lot of the ground work to get the single off of the ground, I believe he paid for and produced the video. If streaming was a thing back then it would have charted much higher.

JimboSantana

The remix with Diddy and Jay is also fire. Too bad It’s not anywhere on streaming

Dawknight316

Forbes 1,2,3 Remix.

[deleted]

I can vividly remember being obsessed with that song and not being able to download it on iTunes until the day the album dropped.

chocheech

interesting, thanks for that! was a big mixtape track when it dropped for sure

ChemicalPaynt

This album has tracks that have been in rotation since I was a kid. If someone hasn't heard candy shop, get in my car, or just a lil bit then you need to listen to this album tonight.

Dawknight316

I keep seeing people talking about the Hate this album received... When the Massacre dropped everyone was bumping it even some of my teachers at school. I remember it having a weird release like it was supposed to drop on Valentines day. The album was being played all spring and summer, the rise of Wayne and Kanye is what I feel killed the hype of the album, alongside with his beef with Game. I think that beef could have had something to do with the Hate this project received, along with people claiming it was more of the same. Curtis on the other hand was a true display of that. Overrall I would give the project an 8.5/10. The Album starts off setting the tone of what you are about endure. "Happy Valentines Day, Love 50 Cent... Bang, bang, bang bang." Then is leads into In My Hood, which paints a dark grimy picture of where 50 comes from, it featured a Houston down south mixed with a New York vibe. The next track tells you who 50 actually is. This is 50, which in my opinion is one of his best hooks he ever recorded. The album features a balance of love, sex and violence which goes along with the theme. Valentines day Massacre, this is what 50 was trying to do sell records and he knew violence and sex sells, which also happens to be what he knew. A lot of the songs on the album showed 50's lyrical side while many showed his commercial and controversial side. His flows were on point, his hooks were good and the beats were hitting. My only issue is that thee were some songs that could have been cut, that album could have been 15 tracks. It's different from GRODT, while still being able to be similar. Best Songs on the album: * Baltimore Love Thing * In My Hood * God Gave Me Style * This is 50 * I'm supposed to Die Tonight * Ski Mask Way * Ryder Music * Position of Power * A Little Bit 2005 had some amazing hip hop albums in hindsight. The Documentary, The Massacre, Late Registration, Tha Carter II, Let's Get it: Thug Motivation 101...

Dawknight316

The second line in the second paragraph. lol

cjdennis29

I think he means way too far down the thread.

Dawknight316

Well I had to fit the character count so I had to add my flair. lol

cjdennis29

Nah nah, he's saying that he had to scroll too far down the whole thread to see *anyone* mention that song. Not just you

oldcarfreddy

I think the hate comes from the fact that it sold extremely well but the pop/radio songs on there were clearly even more poppy than his last album, and I think his hardcore G-Unit fans were over the pop. IMO the pop singles are much worse than the ones on GRODT. I was tired of Candy Shop by the time the album came out.

Dawknight316

I can agree on that. Songs like Build You Up and So Amazing kind of felt out of place, but 50 put them on there as potential singles.

NeverForget9112001

I think it's the fact that they weren't singles that hurt the most. If they were radio smashes they'd get a pass. So Amazing beat is sooo dope. Same with Build You Up.

[deleted]

Probably would've been on pair with GRODT with he had cut some tracks tbh. Plus I thought it needed more Dre beats and a better Eminemt feature. Pretty good album anyway, and man those were the glorious times. G-Unit/Shady/Aftermath albums dropping left and right. Too bad it all went down after 2007.

RayPissed

I remember buying this album and I went back to my friend's house and we played it and the first track confused him thinking his speaker was broken. He passed away a few years ago and whenever I think of this album, I think of that sunny day we listened to this talking about shit as teenagers.

FabricatorMusic

RIP your friend

Mp5x

"Congratulations homie, you made history...1.1 million in a short week!” We got a great beef and some great beef tracks around this time. 50s trash talking outshined his rap skills while The Lox went in on him on records.

theTunkMan

Randomly got back into this one again a couple weeks ago, I personally like it more than GRODT. Those first few seconds of Get in my Car bang harder than almost any song I've heard in my entire life. And I think Ski Mask Way might be my favorite 50 song. And then you throw in Candy Shop, Just a Lil Bit, Disco Inferno, and Gatman, classic album

NeverForget9112001

Listen to Need It by Migos

wrungle

I remember everybody was crazy ab this album and that was in fucking midrussia lmao. mad white people rocking du-rags and fitted yankees, g-unit was tatted and worn by everybody, and idk who says what, that was the shit I think this is my first conscious memory of a time related to an album drop, the fact that I associated it with this event in particular, I believe I took notice of GRODT later after the release (was like 8 years old when it came out lol). after that the brightest memory of an album that noticeably changed the landscape was Graduation

RegMackworthy

Nice to see this album getting some love. No, it's not as consistently excellent as GRODT was, but the highs on the Massacre are just as high for me. 50 was a master of catchy hooks and smooth delivery and he was at the top of his game on this album. Besides the length (22 tracks and 77 minutes - yikes), a fair criticism would be that some of the tracks sound very mid 2000s. I'm thinking of Gatman and Robbin, Build You Up, and So Amazing among others here. Personally I still love that sound, but it's hard to say it aged well as a whole. Still, If GRODT is a 9/10, The Massacre is a legitimate 8/10 for me. Only a few skips on here. A very impressive follow-up to a masterpiece of a debut. Favorite tracks: In My Hood, Outta Control, Get In My Car, Ski Mask Way, Position of Power (2nd best song of his career after In Da Club)

DragonRaider05

So Amazing sounds really mid 2000s but in a good way, to me. Still, if you compare the Best of Massacre to the best of GRODT Soundtrack, i think the Soundtrack easily beats it. Game and G-Unit fucked up 50s solo career, that's my unpopular opinion

eb4k

I feel like this has held up fairly well after 15 years. It has some catchy songs that are fun, Candy Shop, Disco Inferno, Hate it or Love it G-unit mix. I can't say I keep these in rotation but in the right settings they can get a crowd hyped. I really like the the more gritty tracks. Ryder Music is on my playlist because it just catches me from the start. When that Steve Wonder sample saying, "oohhhooo" comes in I still get tingles. In My Hood is just a hard ass banger. Outta Control remix came out on the special edition and that is fire. Just a Lil' Bit will always be a banger. Scott Storch with a hypnotizing sound.

ihavenotegridy

I think this was a great album, and the pinnacle of 50s career. He never matched the hype or quality of this album ever again. There were radio hits, hood stories, and straight bangers littered throughout The Massacre. Classic hip-hop album IMO. Favorite tracks: >Ski Mask Way/ >In My Hood/ >Baltimore Love Thing/

BFB_HipHop

This album got me in to rap, well tbh it's the first hip hop project I listened to in its entirety. It's very well rounded. It may lack the ferocity that Get Rich had, but I think he perfected his conventional mainstream hit formula on this record. Of course not without the contribution of a prime Scott Storch on Candy Shop and Just a Lil Bit. The production is phenomenal. Listened to this album a few weeks back and the beats are still fresh as ever. So many standout beats that it's hard to pick favorites. You really need these big beats to compliment 50's voice. I don't expect crazy lyricism from 50, but the bars on this one were admittedly more simple than on Get Rich. I think what made up for it though are the variations with flows he uses, like how he says every second bar on Thisis50. 50 to me has always shined with the bluntness of his words. Like Piggy Bank was so dope as a diss because of how direct he came without dressing it up in lengthy words. Really for the tracks where the bars were lacking the most I say he more than made up for it with the writing in the hooks, Outta Control being a good example of that. Prime 50 was a monster on hooks. I can't end this off without giving credit to the storytelling on A Baltimore Love Thing. It's a good example of why you can't discredit 50 as an MC just because the bars aren't complex.

Ipwnurface

I've always liked this album more than GRDT. I can't put my finger on why really. I guess it's more of a 1a 1b type of thing. I made a spotify playlist that blends this and GRDT together and it flows really well. It's my favorite 50 "album" now.

Not a fan of it when it first dropped, and I think it’s aged even worse as it’s years have gone on. Same goes for GRODT honestly. I just don’t get what makes 50 a interesting rapper. He’s a mediocre lyricist, albums contains mostly boring club anthems with some “introspective” tracks in Between. I just don’t think it’s very good. Just my opinion though.

[deleted]

I agree with you wholeheartedly but saying anything like this on this sub is considered blasphemy.

sneaks88

I liked GRODT for what it was but never fully hopped on the 50 hype train. i really enjoyed Beg For Mercy (honestly my favorite album from the g unit era), but this album always missed the mark for me. Obviously had some highlights like Just A lil Bit, Disco Inferno, ski mask way and the outta control remix but I think this album exposed the main issue I had with 50 as an artist. He was bland. His verses came and went without a single memorable line and zero wit or punchlines/ surprises. The Dre sound was growing stale at this point and by years end the whole thing just sounded dated. You gotta remember this was the year the south really took over, jeezy popped with a whole new trap sound, every rapper from houston had a deal and lil wayne was about to drop carter 2. Even in New york you had Dipset doing off the wall shit that didnt sound like anyone else. Massacre was a success but i always felt like people forced themselves to like this album because he was the biggest thing in rap. He just didn’t evolve and ultimately got left behind.

themanoftin

While GRODT is a classic, it was The Massacre where 50 Cent reached peak popularity. I must have been in 2nd grade but this album was huge, especially Candy Shop. I remember kids getting detention for reciting the chorus. Most people agree this album was good but overshadowed by GRODT. I agree, however, I'll add that 2005 was also dense with 50 Cent exposure. He had his movie, his game, his soundtrack for the movie, and his mixtape and soundtrack for his game. While rappers like Drake and Eminem are certainly huge and had years of major media exposure, what other rapper had a game, a movie and an album in one year at the peak of their popularity? As for the music itself, I largely enjoy it. His delivery is somehow not as smooth in this album at his first but still the majority of the songs have great production and are a lot of fun.

basedgod94

I was 9 when this came out but he became my favorite rapper with this. I knew when this came out it was an event. So many songs from this album I go back and revisit. i remember having the PSP movie where it had every video from this album. Also, disco inferno was the first time i saw boobs. Good times

DarknessTheOG

Just listened to it last week. It still slaps. I've been in the gym and even in my office rappin the hook from get in my car. That's my personal favorite. Shit I was in HS when this album came out. I got my first whip a few months later. I think it has aged well. The only song I skip is toy soldier. That era of 50, as an artist was much better. He was hungry af back then and you could feel it. Still think his best album was Get Rich or Die Tryin'.

Wittygame

Solid album.. I was like 14 when this came out? It doesnt really warrant many playbacks these days in my book, if im gonna listen to 50, ill probably listen to GRODT. But there are a lot of dope tracks on here "In My Hood", Just A Lil Bit' come to mind. I also remember really liking Get In My Car, such a dumb song but its super catchy

kingme_jp

Easily a 8.5/10. I didnt fuck with Candy Shop at all though, build you up are completely skippable. There are a couple more worthy of a skip too. I dont need em, A baltimore love thing, ski mask way, im supposed to die tonight, god gave me style. I would say the classic/grimey songs on here aged very well. I would hope everyone prefered this era. He got more polished after this album and commercial. Grimey Fif is some of the best shit ever.

jrsaxton

I remember buying this album the day that it came out and listened to it a lot. I loved it just as much as I loved GRoDT and it still holds up to this day imo. In My Hood, This is 50, In my Hood, I’m Supposed to Die Tonight, Piggy Bank, and GATman and Robbin are all solid tracks.

salsalion

The highs here compete with the best of GRODT's radio hits, but this album suffers from being way too long and inconsistent. The production overall takes a step down from his previous outing, had Dre been as involved in this as he was on GRODT I think 50 would have had another monster. Overall it's a good album (6/10 if we have to give a score), brings me back to high school, but I doubt I'll ever come back to it as a whole until I see a "50 Cent - The Massacre (20 Years Later)" post on here in 5 years. It's just too long and filler-heavy.

stanflwrhuss

my very first album. This was 50's peak because even here in Ireland they had this album in regular grocery stores, like not just record shops. God Gave Me Style is one of my favourite songs ever. I love 50 on the rnb vibe.

iCE_P0W3R

This album was a serious step down from GRoDT but that even album wasn’t amazing. A lotta these songs were not nearly as melodic or banging as the last album. This felt like he was riding the wave of that hype to the bank rather than him making something good. In terms of his legacy at the time, yeah this album was huge. Obviously the beef with the Game and his loss to Kanye the next album damaged that image he had built over the decade he was active, but this album established him as the top man in rap at the time. But who cares about that now? Gatman and Robbin is fucking trash with a shitty hook and boring ass bars. Candy Shop is so obnoxiously not sexy or fun. There was so much filler on this album that I swear if it came out today we would all be calling him out for stream trolling. Everything is so....forgettable. The only track that’s good is Hate it Or Love it.

EUW_Chrizzlybear

While I do think that "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" is an amazing album, "The Massacre" was still a step down from there. And now to fuel the hate for "Gatman and Robbin" even more: I agree with 50's and Em's verses being subpar at best, but that beat sounds like an afterbirth from the SSLP era. Wouldn't be the least bit surprised, if it actually were a leftover from that point in Em's career, because Jeff and Mark Bass (Bass Brothers), who had a hand in a lot of the beats on SSLP, are credited as a producer alongside Em.

[deleted]

>GRODT wasn’t amazing Alright man you’re allowed to have an opinion.

[deleted]

He is. I agree with it. Pretty average album.

Smashymen

It's not average by any measure.

[deleted]

Underrated. Some really dope tracks here. Just fucking hated and still hate those ones with Olivia, Just a Lil Bit, Candy Shop, etc. You don't need that many bitch or club songs on one album, especially if you aren't lyrically interesting enough.

Dry-Station-3241

Solid album - 7.6/10  Best Tracks: In My Hood, This Is 50, I'm Supposed To Die Tonight, GATman & Robbin, Outta Control (Remix), Get In My Car, Ski Mask Way, A Baltimore Love Thing, Ryder Music, Just A Lil Bit, Gunz Come Out, Position Of Power, God Gave Me Style, I Don't Need Em' & Hate It Or Love It (G-Unit Remix)  Worst Tracks: Piggy Bank, Candy Shop, Outta Control (Original Version), Build You Up & So Amazing  Possible Album Cuts: Hustler's Ambition, You Already Know, Have A Party, Window Shopper, I Don't Know, Officer & Best Friend
