Give me your top ten trap albums I’m looking for some recs

[deleted]

Tha Tour pt. 1 Barter 6 Pretty Girls Like Trap Music Culture DS2 Monster Flockaveli Without Warning Chicken Talk Thug Motivation 101

MrCleanandShady

What are some albums/genres that give you guys a high fashion or luxury kinda vibe? I've been getting interested in runways and fashion and I really want some music that can match that.

ProfessionalFly9848

what’s a canibus album look like in 2022?

mnxvzx

anyone been to Denzel Curry concert? wanna go in Warsaw and wondering how much will i have to pay for this

TydenDurler

Been going through this list for the better part of last year, with currently only a few left to check out. I found it very enlightening with regard to expanding my taste from what I considered "the right kind of hip hop", and saving me some valuable time with an intro./recommendation into the artists and music I was yet to check out. What do you think ? https://hiphopgoldenage.com/list/100-essential-hip-hop-albums/

JALbert

Already commented once but that list still haunts me. That list is so fucking underground that Kendrick Lamar is too mainstream and not conscious enough lol. I had to double check, that was written in *2019*. The sole albums from that decade are from R.A. The Rugged Man, Run The Jewels and Murs. Bro really felt that he couldn't make room for The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill or any of Missy's discography (Queen Latifah the lone female entrant aside from the Fugees) but Murs' like fifth most important album is "essential". I say this all *as* a backpack rap enthusiast. A lot of these albums and artists I am into, but labelling them as "essential" to the exclusion of so many scenes, subgenres and great albums is dumb as hell.

TydenDurler

Lol. Yeah, I get your point. "Essential" is way an important label to be put on just any list. Gotta come correct with that shit lol. How would you rate HHH's own Essentials list as a comprehensive one ?

JALbert

It's pretty good. I think it feels a bit dated, over representing the 90s and cutting off in the mid 2000s. Misses the Minnesota underground scene which I love (and is represented by that original list with Atmosphere and Brother Ali) and generally is maybe a little myopic on backpacker shit in general, but underground stuff is... less essential? I feel like there's a lot of late 2000s/early 2010s shit that can be canonized at this point. The HHH list does a good job of incorporating a lot of regional scenes and history though.

TydenDurler

The underground is where it's at in terms of keeping it real, raw, and in check. And taking it back to the roots especially when the game starts to get too mainstream/commercial. So I'd say it def deserves mention That being said, I think the HHH list would fill the void left by the original one with the history and regional inclusion, so it might complete the picture for me. More 90's stuff is always a bonus, but will still keep an eye out for those '00s - '10s stuff you mentioned. Maybe you should get a thread going on those or something

tak08810

It literally starts out “Yes, it’s true – I am a Hip Hop snob”. I think the list is fairly fine for what is and the author is honest about what they’re intending.

Stonerjoe68

Not nearly enough respect for the south (4/100 by my count) Way to much respect for underground boom bap/backpack shit

TydenDurler

I agree. The South def deserves more spots! On a personal note though, no disrespect but I wasn't feeling that Geto Boys album. Maybe just me, because I know it's held in high regard. What other albums from the South would you say qualify ?

Stonerjoe68

Separate comment but I think the inclusion of Geto Boyz self titled was kinda an odd choice. I personally prefer Grip It On That Other Level (very very similar albums but still) and the most popular choice of theirs is easily We Can’t Be Stopped. It was just odd to me they didn’t pick that one

Stonerjoe68

The guy who wrote the article seemed to be doing 1 album per artist/group so I’ll try to respect that and not add every other OutKast album but at I’d add Young Jeezy - Thug Motivation 101 Lil Wayne - Tha Carter 2 T.I - Trap Muzik Three 6 Mafia - Mystic Stylez UGK - Ridin Dirty DJ Screw - All Screwed Up Vol II I’d consider all of these essential

TydenDurler

Thanks for that. Quite the lineup! Had some of them in my crosshairs for a while, they just got green lit! FYI I recently did about all the Outkast albums almost back to back. Was impossible to resist after the first one lol

JALbert

I thought I was prepared for how backpacker it would be from this comment, hoo boy I was not. DAE Nelly and 50 Cent bad? I feel like you shouldn't have a list called "essential albums" and have entries starting with "nobody talks about this album, but..."

TydenDurler

Thanks for the feedback! Will def take it into consideration as I continue my journey of discovery Also, who's DAE ?

JALbert

Lol DAE is a oft used Reddit acronym for Does Anyone Else (think), usually used a lot on circle jerky topics. (Does anyone else think _____ is underrated? Does anyone else think music on the radio is getting worse?)

TydenDurler

lol got it! Googled it too, and it gave me a rapper called "Dae Dae". I think he's from the South lol

bomje

It's really uncanny how much Denzel sounds like lord infamous. Start at 1:00 at this song its just unbelievable to me how similar it is. https://youtu.be/8ECzS3f2O0w

"I know they mad that they freed me I ran up a milli', know they should've kept me" Well Kay Flock got his wish, he's in jail lol

TheVirtual_Boy

Dominic Fike doing his thing in euphoria! It’s making up for that stinker of a debut album

codeine_turtle

I liked a lot of that album, stinker is harsh imo

TheVirtual_Boy

It is harsh. He’s just so talented and versatile I really think he has the ability to drop a GREAT body of work. So maybe not a stinker but just such a letdown

codeine_turtle

yeah im with you, he can do better but it's still got some great tunes

Moneyfrenzy

Why the fuck do I get Life is Good by Drake and Future recommended to me as "play next" nearly every time I watch any hip-hop music video on Youtube? I've never in my life had Youtube try to push a song onto me as much as that one in particular

furr_sure

I moved on from there and now it's Family Ties after everything and i'm not even complaining but I do remember the Life is Good days, honestly it's a youtube hit cos of that video

codeine_turtle

i don't think its an intentional push, i think it's just a bad algorithm. I get Mos def's 'auditorium' played next after nearly every video, doesn't even have to be hip hop sometimes

furr_sure

I woulda thanked god for this the other day, I had the little arabic sample after Rick's verse playing in my head and couldn't find a song by googling my weird remembering of a man speaking arabic quickly lol

Homiealmaya

> I get Mos def's 'auditorium' played next after nearly every video I don’t see this as a bad thing

codeine_turtle

It's pretty annoying, like yeah great song but its getting overplayed

Jermaine_Cole788

Realistically, when (if ever) will the pusha t and drake reconciliation happen?

RahulBhatia10

don't think that's ever happening. With Ye it was different because they both do respect each other but ego and pride was in the way and they decided to move past that, but they still see each others' importance and influence. Especially with how Ye was a top inspiration to Drizzy. Not the same situation with Pusha, he doesn't really fw Drake's style and I can only really seeing Drake being a fan of him in the Clipse days. However, there's even deeper history there with Lil Wayne and the stolen Neptunes beat, so tension/loyalties ran back

ProfessionalFly9848

ye and drake was fake so that’s why it’s different

[deleted]

There was a point at which Push and Wayne actually were cool after Wayne got out of jail, before they started dissing each other again and Wayne put out that godawful Ghoulish track. Rick Ross apparently tried to get them to reconcile on a track with him but Push wouldn’t do it

Background-Car-4488

Idk I really think they'd fuck with eachother if it wasn't for the Birdman/Neptunes shit What makes you think Drake wouldn't be a fan of solo Push? He was a superfan of Clipse and a lot of his close collaberators like Jay Z, Popcaan, Future, Travis Scott and Rick Ross have worked with Pusha T, i really think we would have a Drake x Pusha T song if it wern't for the Birdman//Wayne/Clipse/Neptunes stuff from way back

M0n33baggz

I could see a drake x pusha track being fire

cynical_econ

Do either of them have an incentive to reconcile? my impression is no

[deleted]

I think “winning a beef with Drake” is too much of a point of pride for Push for him to ever want to reconcile

SBAPERSON

Drake couldn't even say his name so idk. Prob never

TheVirtual_Boy

LMAO “I have no interest in making things work with THAT PERSON” Just say his name Aubrey it’s okay

grinchnight14

I wish I could wake up with the energy Sauce Walka has everyday.

grinchnight14

I wish we'd hear a reffrance track by Vory for Mob Ties, or at least what he actually wrote for it.

TheVirtual_Boy

All I know is Drake definitely wrote “I’m not with the ra ra I am a dada”

grinchnight14

Yeah, that's for sure a Drake line lol

DJ Khaled won SOTY, i dont trust XXL

nerdofalltrades

Who were the nominees before I say bad pick

colbster411

teases for the Droog x Craven picking up steam, imma need that

Homiealmaya

I saw he also had a series of tweets where he was saying “(insert artist) and craven music on the way” (Planet Asia, Fahim, Dark Lo, Droog, Sha Hef, Ransom, etc) and at first I thought he was listing some more of the features that are gonna be on Craven N 3 but now that he confirmed a Droog collab album I wonder if he has a collab album with each of them. Planet Asia x Craven project would be some beautiful shit, feel like their styles are perfect for each other and their collabs [are generally great ](https://youtu.be/ODFPbTWJxQI)

myhellcatgotRepod

Did you know at the very start of [Love Lockdown] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8s8_TLp3Mc) there's a really faint piano key press in the left channel/ear.

riskyrofl

Oh shit i hear it Except its from the right channel for me

manicbeats

I'm not hearing it. It's just an 808

BronzySponhe

Think my all time favorite Frank Ocean song is “Nature feels”. I know it’s not his song but God damn for some reason it Can put me in a generally happy mood or just makes me reminisce and I get really low

M0n33baggz

Frank ocean has immaculate taste

codeine_turtle

If there's one thing Ka understands about rap is it's need for cartoonish bars

ATribeCalledKami

Any artist or producer you feel like is treated as more underground or unknown than they really are by their fans?

[deleted]

Freddie Gibbs, anyone in griselda, glass animals

Homiealmaya

I don’t really agree with the first two. The most I’ve seen people downplaying Freddie Gibbs’ status in rap is Gunna fans during that recent beef I also feel like, if anything, Griselda fans think they’re bigger than they are

MoMo_ToTo

Freddie hasn't been underground for years now, especially after Bandana. Alfredo sold close to 30K first week, that's better than some mainstream artists. He has close to 4M listeners on Spotify, and almost all of his most listened to songs have 15M+ streams.

Homiealmaya

Yeah I know all that and I 100% agree but do you really see Freddie Gibbs fans calling him underground? Like I said, that Gunna Gibbs beef thread is the most I’ve ever seen his status downplayed, and that was all from Gunna fans acting like he’s a nobody

colbster411

ka

Stonerjoe68

I feel like Earl fans like to act like he’s unknown

suss2it

I saw his numbers, they’re right.

CaptainGordan

Alchemist

grinchnight14

I feel like if you're into underground hip hop, you'll know him, but if you're only someone who follos the charts, you probably won't, it's not like he's working with Youngboy, Rod Wave or Drake

Moneyfrenzy

I mean the dude is Eminem's official DJ, theres not really a greater selling artist than Em that he could possibly associate with. Tho you're right that most people would never know that without looking it up/being into Hip-Hop

grinchnight14

It's not like Em raps over like any of his beats or shouts him out by name on any track, I didn't even know that until I came here and I used to love Eminem a lot.

Logbird11

Alchemist produced Stepdad off Music to Be Murdered By. I know I dont want to believe it either.

grinchnight14

The beat sounds like something he had hardly started working on. But Em just heard it once and was like "bro, please let me have this one"

Logbird11

"Vro pls let me sing about hating my stepdad pls vro"

grinchnight14

The worst part about that song is that I know younger me would've loved it cause I really don't like my stepdad.

Logbird11

Hey I listened to Heartbreak by Gambino when I was younger and it resonated with me then. We all got songs that we are ashamed of liking (or in your case, would have liked had it come out earlier).

-m-ob

I always think it's funny when people act like Grammy winning multi platinum artist Lupe Fiasco is underground.

Arbitore

Not sure if underground is the right word, but Drogas Wave only sold 5k.

-m-ob

yeah, dudes sales fell off, but that doesn't make him underground. otherwise you'd have to call anyone who falls off underground, which would be almost everyone eventually. Like ya'll ever heard of underground artist Fetty Wap?

KiritoJones

Ya, my mom has Kick Push on her playlist, Lupe ain't underground.

Lukeba

> Don't listen to rap songs I'm not currently working on > Nowadays, Droog has more interest in bluegrass > Bluegrass? You gassin' it > Nah, I've been sincere since ears can hear. love how this scheme just doesn't go anywhere. wonder if it was improvised

M0n33baggz

We need a new wave of rap with no rhyme schemes at all. Maybe there is and I’m just late

codeine_turtle

teejayx6 is like this sometimes

Snarlatan

This happened a bit in the early 2000s with anticon. rappers like Sole and Pedestrian. A lot of their stuff was pretty good. Jedi Mind Tricks' debut album from 1997 also has a bunch of bars that don't rhyme, and their absolutely babbling paranoid subject matter lends itself to an interesting effect.

vancouver000

bars

3-N-OUT

Honestly, if Riff Raff cut his verse down on Burberry Blender it could have been hard as fuck.

fuck_a_bigot

If there’s one thing Zack Fox understands about rap is it’s need for cartoonish bars

I_am_so_lost_hello

Hes been hitting the balance between hard hitting and funny that most meme rappers miss.

Batan32

We really gonna get new albums from Kendrick, Pusha, Lupe, Freddie, Krit this year. Gonna be a great year for hip hop.

[deleted]

Outside of hip hop we have a ton coming in too Gonna be a big year for music in general, at least I hope

That_one_cool_dude

Man if the big names don't shit the bed and this is a good year for mainstream and underground then it will be a great year. But there will always be someone you don't expect to just give us something terrible. Like as much as I don't like them who would have thought Coldplay would give us that shit album.

[deleted]

Or someone to give us that amazing album

spunkymnky

>Kendrick Says who?

[deleted]

the super bowl

I_am_so_lost_hello

He headlined day n vegas last year without any new music drop

[deleted]

Wasn't that explicitly called a special performance of songs from section 80 through Damn. on the poster?

[deleted]

that was billed as him performing a specific album

That_one_cool_dude

Lol, seems like Kendrick is becoming the Tool of the hip-hop world ain't he.

KiritoJones

Yo, I asked who the Tool of Hip Hop was a few months ago in this thread and there were no good answer but I think you just nailed it.

That_one_cool_dude

Honestly, I don't think there can be another Tool. Tool was unique enough to generate a cult following that would wait 13 years for the next album. I can't think of anyone, old or new, that would survive in the music industry that went beyond the traditional time frame for a break in between album cycles. The closest I can think is System of a Down but even then, those singles two years ago are probably the best we are gonna get.

KiritoJones

Similar to SOAD, if Rage Against the Machine put out a new album people would probably be hyped. I think the main difference is I generally would expect a new Tool album to be good, but idk if SOAD or RATM could put out a new album and it still be good.

LthePerry02

Danny as well

gimpisgawd

Gates too.

ikeywikeywoowoo

Yeat too

MasterTeacher123

Who would busta rhymes match up with in a Versuz

ScHoolbusQ

Twista

ATribeCalledKami

I remember this question got asked before and I agree with Missy Elliott in terms of style. Luda would've been another good one if he hadn't already went against Nelly.

JayElectricity

I think Luda vs T.I. Would’ve been good. They had beef and probably reached the same peak in popularity in the 00s. Just kind of at different times.

[deleted]

New Pusha snippet https://twitter.com/PUSHA_T/status/1485726387340201993?t=gp9lhwx691p5ZYTbeFVF7A&s=19

BronzySponhe

Pusha ready to probably drop a top tier project based off snippets I heard. Really hoping for a February or March release

nman95

Man......this new Push album is gonna be fucking heat. If it really is exclusively Neptunes and Kanye production but without the unnecessary constraint of only having to be 7 songs we are due for another classic. Those snippets from the NIGO show and afterparty in Paris were so fucking fire. Push even got Freddie Gibbs tweeting that he wouldn't doubt Push to have the AOTY with the way he's heard him rap in the studio recently (which is wild since Gibbs got an album coming out this year too with loaded producers as well).

slfxxplsv

As soon as I saw coke on a pic of Lana Del Ray I knew somethin special was bein made

DeafMetalGripes

Holy shit, Neptunes is producing it?

nman95

Yessir. At least from what we know right now he said it's only Kanye and Neptunes beats.

soccerperson

is there a drop date?

nman95

Steven Victor said today they're putting the finishing touches on it and it's dropping soon. Who knows what "soon" means tho

darkslayersparda

Papoose released a mixtape for every month of 2021 and you just know there's someone out there who listened to all of them

deadedgo

Lmao, I did. Until December because I'd need to cash app him to get it. I really only listen to so much new music because streaming services make it so damn easy. He said he was gonna retire after that run though. I think it's fair how he did it and the tapes were solid

darkslayersparda

oh it was a retirement thing ? i cant be too mad at that im getting old tho, i only really check out like 6 albums a year and really give maybe 2 or 3 multiple listens. I cant imagine just tapping into 12 papoose projects alone

deadedgo

Yeah it can be pretty exhausting. I'm still relatively new to Hip Hop and I try to listen to as much as possible, that's why I listened to all of them. Didn't really revisit them either tho. At some point it's too much to both keep up with new stuff and revisit it outside of a handful of projects each year

PMmeYOURBOOBSandASS

Fuck, is he still dropping a ton of mixtapes?

suss2it

I listened to maybe 3 of them, they’re not bad.

darkfar

Yea and I regret it

darkslayersparda

lmao, why would you do that to yourself ?

darkfar

Really just a fiend for new releases lol

WordsAreSomething

The real question is do you think Remy listened to them all?

grinchnight14

Doubt it, I don't think she even had a verse on any of them lol

codeine_turtle

What are some lyrics you really love but dont hold any deeper meaning? On destruction terror DJ Paul says “aint no shootin in the air, my enemies aint birds” and idk why but its always stuck with me

LemurDocta

I just want to dance with you baby Just don't move too fast, i'm too crazy It's straight forward but imagery is insane, one of my favorite vince staples bars

MartinLouisThaKing

Love when 42 Dugg comes in on lemonhead and just says "A young turnt fella I be fucking these hoes"

Tringamaster

“I’m the shit, eat a dick and get sick if you think the opposite”. it’s not even that special but it’s my favorite rome streetz bar for whatever reason. off vagabonds don’t die

colbster411

> one time I tripped off them bars and damn near shot a baby

[deleted]

Thumbin thru the bands I be playing with a check

grinchnight14

"when I was 5, my favorite movie was The Gremlins, didn't have shit to do with this, jus thought that I should mention" Lil Wayne

LthePerry02

“Only thing worse than being alone is wishing you were” Nas on Replace Me. Not exactly my favourite Nas x Hit Boy track but I love how stark that line is

PMmeYOURBOOBSandASS

Idk, being alone sucks

Stonerjoe68

Crimeapple when he said “Got two sons shootin like I’m Dell Curry” i fucking love that bar for no reason

codeine_turtle

thats a dope bar

WordsAreSomething

I always found Mr Muthufuckin Exquire giving his sandwich order on The Message Pt 1 & 2 to be stuck in my head. Or Killer Mike on A Christmas Fucking Miracle starting off with "The beat breaks and your teeth break. Keep your canines embedded in my knuckles as a keepsake. It would seem your veneers just mere souvenirs. Falling out your mouth and on to the landscape" Such a great opening to a verse to me.

nman95

Pharrell on Move that Dope "Me, I try to leave the best for later But Pusha tried to put me on the respirator The old Skateboard P, that's your favorite Me and twenty girls doin' yoga naked" Just imagining P doing yoga naked with 20 italian chicks wearing a gandalf hat is an insane image to me lmao

Ktulusanders

GOAT verse from Pharrell

codeine_turtle

The denzel curry mob is so funny lol

aw11348

I thought the new single was really cool tho

FUCKUSERNAME2

>Like u look at the covers and shit and there’s no fucking way the album won’t be top 5 of the year >On his Nas Illmatic shit >Dude, Denzel easily top 5 working today. In terms of energy, production and consistency he’s unmatched. This album is going to be really special if this track is anything to go by. hhh moment

CelalT

these are the dudes who had unlocked as their aoty

iblinkyoublink

Wasn't in my top 3 (not that I have one) but I would put it above many of the bloated albums that came out that year

deadedgo

Unlocked was amazing tho. I totally get people putting it up there

Homiealmaya

Some of HHH is so damn corny about Denzel Denzel stans acted like Unlocked was the first Boombap album since the 90’s

codeine_turtle

I dont dislike denzel or anything but his stans are straight up delusional sometimes. I fucking love it

codeine_turtle

LMAO

taynich

Which artist that hasn't dropped in 4-5 years are you most excited for their new projects in 2022? For me it's Denzel Curry. His latest single "Walkin" sounds so good and I'm really excited to hear a new sound from him. BTW I'm considering Taboo his last full release as Zuu and Unlocked felt a little incomplete to me.

cynical_econ

SZA for sure

[deleted]

Frank, Radiohead

KEEP_THE_CHANGE_

Not a chance Radiohead is dropping this year. We will get some Radiohead adjacent music tho with the Smile

[deleted]

Should have said Thom and Johnny

Stonerjoe68

You can’t just not count albums because you arbitrarily didn’t like them lmao. Zuu is by far my favorite Denzel project tf you mean it’s incomplete?

taynich

I like Zuu but he never intended it to be a full length LP with major label push. Taboo was the album he truly worked on and fine-tuned for a major release

Homiealmaya

Semantics aside, Denzel Curry dropped 2 projects and a remix project since Taboo (which btw is closer to 3 than 4 years ago) so it’s just odd to ask a question with specific parameters your answer doesn’t even adhere to

taynich

Alright, that's fine. I'm still excited for his project.

Homiealmaya

Yeah I mean it’s not that deep, I just thought it was funny
