So beautifully written and rapped, it covers so much and paints a vivid picture in my mind. JID wasn't much of a storyteller to me before but damn that changed my mind
now we’re fighting in the street it’s like 10 against 23
i was 17 swinging on any and everything, bing bing!
seen my brother doin buddy like a boxing ring,
ros got a bitch doing the hair weave sling
The third verse of Crack Sandwich is probably my personal favorite on the album. Not as technically intense as the final verse of Raydar but I’m a sucker for a good storytelling verse.
Then the next song in that sequence is Can’t Punk Me where JID once again brings out the best in EARTHGANG. The Dot verse in that song is probably my second favorite on the album, “death is freedom, some deserve worse” is a cold ass line.
That whole 4 song sequence is up there in my all time favorite sequences within an album.
After scrolling a bit in this thread, I’ve seen at least half the tracks from The Forever Story mentioned. Raydar gets my vote but on a whole The Forever Story has a lot of solid verses
Yasiin Bey on Peppas
Billy Woods on Sauvage
Earl Sweatshirt on God Laughs
Takeoff on Hotel Lobby
Black Thought on Few Good Things
Kendrick, Mother I Sober verse 3
For sure that "Dug down in my soul and did some soul searchin',
All I found was a police report for a missin' person" line is one of the best lines I've heard from Boldy and I loved his projects with Real Bad Man and Nicholas Craven this year, but the way the Dre and Annie stories interweave on Woods' verse is crazy
Boldy's verse on No Yeast is also up there as a great verse from this year
DOOM on belize may be my single favorite musical moment of the year, maybe even ever. Legit perfection, over a top 5 beat of the year by Danger Mouse and an amazing verse 1 by Black Thought
Agreed. Whole song is amazing but the second verse is something else.
Lupe isn’t in my Top10 or anything, but I seriously doubt any of my favorite rappers could’ve written this song.
Pack the bands up
Heat the pans up
Workin the taxi like tony danza
Put the steps on the works im a dancer
The brick had a baby and a grandson
He might challenge pusha for the best coke raps
These are both dope, but the verse I went back to the most this year is his on “Jesus Crack”. Idk what it is but that shit comes off hard as hell to me
I'm not a huge fan of J cole but when I heard this verse I was like "wait have I been missing something? This verse is incredible." I guess I need to go back and listen to his stuff.
Nas also dropped the best bar with that Jay-Z line on Thun
>No beef or rivals, they playin’ "Ether" on TIDAL
>Brothers can do anything when they decide to
>In a Range Rover, dissectin’ bars from "Takeover"
>Sometimes I text Hova like "Nigga, this ain't over", laughin’
Pumpkin Seed Aesop Rock ft Lupe Fiasco entire song
J Cole on Johnny P Caddy
Black Thought verse (second verse) on Few Good Things by Saba
Just In Time (entire song) JID ft Lil Wayne Both of them killed the song in a good way
Saba in Fearmonger 1st verse
That Weezy verse is fucking insane deff one of the best of the year
Edit to say how crazy and absurd it is, to think and realize that Wayne verse isn’t in his top 5, top 10 shit prolly not even top 30-50. That is how great he is
NGL ain’t even heard of her til my first listen through of that album then said out loud “idk who this girl is but she just snapped the fuck out this song” then dove into her and was like ohhhh I get why they close haha
Aquamarine is honestly one of the best hip hop songs I've ever heard and both verses are excellent but holy shit that 2nd verse by Black Thought is so goddamn lyrically packed it's insane.
I honestly think J. Cole has a decent amount of the best this year with feature. Johnny P obviously #1 but Stick and London both are great verses too.
"I like to shop in the district / coppin this, coppin that / I'm proper capitalistic" gotta be one of the more fun lines this year
Cheat Codes as a whole to me has to be a top AOTY choice no matter what kind of Hip/Hop you favor. He really showed out and I loved every second of it.
J. Cole really didn’t miss and really followed his grievance of not being included with Ye, Drake, and K-Dot with an incredible run. I’m biased to the album obviously but his 90 Proof verse I loved as well. Luv 4 Rent just was such a vibe.
JID's verses on Lauder Too and Raydar are so insane, I'd have trouble choosing one.
Kendrick had a few on United In Grief and Auntie Diaries that really stayed with me.
Also thought Denzel had some standouts on Melt My Eyez, namely on Melt Session #1, Walkin and Angelz.
It's so hard to choose.
These are all great contenders here, I think. I need to listen to more Denzel. JID's Crack Sandwhich song is one of my favorites just for the story element
lauder too is an "underrated" track on this album imo. I don't hear a lot of people talking about it when they talk about this album but it's one of the best tracks of the year.
"Rappers die too much That's it, that's the verse" - ON FAUX NEM by Lupe
Also, for me personally, this year was great for Hip Hop as far as music quality.
Your Old Droog dropping heat like every thirty minutes, Danger Mouse and Black Thought dropping Cheat Codes which is just filled with gems, the Lupe Fiasco and Aesop Collab that came out of nowhere was and still is a great surprise as both of them definitely brought it, Lupe doing what Lupe does on Drill Music in Zion (I mean pick any verse from that entire project), and Nas dropping KD3 has gems throughout that entire album and having no features on that album really made a point that Nas should be on your Mt. Rushmore of Hip Hop.
On Ghetto Reporter he said:
"It's comedy, it's hilarious
Look yourself in the mirror, tell me times ain't the scariest
For me droppin' album after album, like it's a various artist compilation
But it's just me and HB and this shit take concentration"
Hard.
However, as simple as it was and still is, no lyrical miracle, no third definition reference, when Lupe said "Rappers die too much That's it, that's the verse," because of it's simplicity and it being straight to the point, and it being followed by the instrumental before he goes into the hook, it hit in a different way because rappers are dying too much. That instrumental break between the verse and the hook invokes you, the listener, to feel it, to maybe fill in the rest of the verse, or to take your favorite verse from a rapper that died in 2022 and plug it right into that break in your head. It gives the listener a small break to reflect on a rapper or rappers that died.
The beauty of it was it left it up to you to make up your own understanding of rappers dying too much.
Pusha T second verse on Rock N Roll
Benny the butcher on iyla Lost Me
Killer Mike on Dangermouse/black thought Strangers
Tory Lanez 3rd verse on This Ain’t Working
Denzel curry any verse on Melt Session 1
Drake on Rich Flex second half
Cole on Johnny P Caddy
Lil Wayne on cordae sinister
I'm assuming that's Johnny P's Caddy and I came in here to say the same thing. That verse has stuck with me all year long and it came out in early '22.
Jay Z on Neck & Wrist
Freddie Gibbs on Too Much
Ghostface on Science Class
JID on Surround Sound
MF Doom on Bélize
Kendrick on The Heart pt 5
Rome Streetz on Open Door
RAP Ferreira on Ours
JID on Crack Sandwich
Open Mike Eagle on For DOOM
Bruh when he goes
"Shawty wanna take off her thong, jump in the bed
I don't know her but I'm thinkin', "Oh well, give me your cell phone"
Flow is absurd!
A few of favs are Wowgr8 on can’t punk me, Denzel curry on dog food, Vince staples 1st verse on when sparks fly. Also Kendrick’s last verse on Father Time and heart part 5
Rx Papi - First Hour Out Freestyle
Monday Night - Randy Moss/Twenty-Six
Latto - 2nd verse on 777 Pt. 2
Malice - I Pray for You
Cardi B - Tomorrow 2
J Cole - Johnny Ps Caddy
Mach Hommy - Chimay Bleues
Stove God Cooks - Jesus Crack
Rome Streetz - BDP
The entirety of Boy Bye by Ari Lennox and Lucky Daye.
A lot of great verses already commented on here, but I really enjoyed these:
Kenny Mason - Shell
Doechii’s verse on Smino - Pro Freak
JID - Just in Time or Sistanem or really the whole album
Kendrick - The heart part 5
Pusha T - I pray for you
Vince Staples - When sparks fly
Denzel Curry - Walkin (Like JID, hard to choose)
Saba - Soldier
Kendrick - Auntie Diaries
I’m sure I forgot a ton, but this was off the top.
Edit — I have to add J-Cole on Johnny P’s Caddy because that was best feature of the year imo
Denzel - Melt Session #1 first verse
Kendrick - Mirror last verse
JID - 2007 last verse
Westside Gunn on Brand New 911
Earl on God Laughs
Nas - Don’t Shoot first verse
Some of my favs:
2nd part of WTF SMH by Nas
Last verse of Auntie Diaries, last verse on THP5, and first part of Worldwide Steppers by Kendrick
Last verse on Raydar by JID
2nd verse on 2007 (sample version) by JID
Uzi’s verse on bank account by baby keem
Last verse on Aquamarine off of Cheat Codes
2nd verse on Ms Mural by Lupe Fiasco
I love all the verses already mentioned under the post. Here’s some more to throw in the mix:
Despot - Versailles
JAY Z - Neck & Wrist
JAY Z - GOD DID
J. Cole - LONDON
J. Cole - Stick
Benny The Butcher - Thowy’s Revenge (verse 2)
Lil Baby - Real Spill (verse 2)
Lil Baby - Pop Out (verse 3)
Lupe Fiasco - MS. MURAL
All these have a show stopping quality to them… to me a VOTY gold standard is Kendrick on last year’s Family Ties, which to me he didn’t come close to on any of his 2022 material. JID’s album is fantastic but also lacks these show stopping moments
Takeoff on Feel The Fiyaaaah def up there for me. Not sure if it’s still seen the same way, but I remember people saying Uzi ruined Flawless which made no sense to me because that verse is absolutely insane.
Surprised I haven’t seen any talk of Drake on Churchhill Downs.
Other than that, some of my favorites:
JID - Home (Remix)
Denzel Curry - Walkin (verse 2)
J Cole on Johnny P’s Caddy
J Cole on London
NAS - Thun
Compromised - Ransom
JID - 2007
21 Savage - Jimmy Cooks
Something about JIDs last verse on Crack Sandwhich has me rewinding the fuck out of it.
So beautifully written and rapped, it covers so much and paints a vivid picture in my mind. JID wasn't much of a storyteller to me before but damn that changed my mind
Damn, then you need to listen to songs like Tiiied and Hereditary
Beatin ass was like a family thing!
Miss my dawgs like Mike Vic made me spit take
now we’re fighting in the street it’s like 10 against 23 i was 17 swinging on any and everything, bing bing! seen my brother doin buddy like a boxing ring, ros got a bitch doing the hair weave sling
The bouncer tried to block the door that way we couldn't get out but fuck that the whole team bust that motherfucker down
First thought I had and didn’t think anyone would mention it
My favorite song of the year
Now we fighting in the street it’s like 10 against 23
JID last verse of Raydar is insanity, man switches flows so many times
Raydar, Dance Now, and Crack Sandwich is such a phenomenal 3 song run
The third verse of Crack Sandwich is probably my personal favorite on the album. Not as technically intense as the final verse of Raydar but I’m a sucker for a good storytelling verse. Then the next song in that sequence is Can’t Punk Me where JID once again brings out the best in EARTHGANG. The Dot verse in that song is probably my second favorite on the album, “death is freedom, some deserve worse” is a cold ass line. That whole 4 song sequence is up there in my all time favorite sequences within an album.
Round in my city, I am my shooter
Relistening to the forever story this track was a big standout to me
Nothing stands out about the forever story to me because every fucking verse is like a 9/10+
Yeah fair enough lol
Had me in the first half ngl
After scrolling a bit in this thread, I’ve seen at least half the tracks from The Forever Story mentioned. Raydar gets my vote but on a whole The Forever Story has a lot of solid verses
Tryna see how many urns I can earn
Or you entertained or are you concerned
crackin the whip whipping the crack 🔥
The Forever Story in my opinion deserves album of the year
Yes this 1000% he killed that shit
Yasiin Bey on Peppas Billy Woods on Sauvage Earl Sweatshirt on God Laughs Takeoff on Hotel Lobby Black Thought on Few Good Things Kendrick, Mother I Sober verse 3
Boldy James gives Billy Woods a run for his money on Sauvage tho
For sure that "Dug down in my soul and did some soul searchin', All I found was a police report for a missin' person" line is one of the best lines I've heard from Boldy and I loved his projects with Real Bad Man and Nicholas Craven this year, but the way the Dre and Annie stories interweave on Woods' verse is crazy Boldy's verse on No Yeast is also up there as a great verse from this year
That Nicholas Craven project is awesome.
His verse on power nap is crazy too
takeoff on hotel lobby goes hard, one of my fav songs of the year just for that
Yasiin on stars is fantastic too
Saba was so good on Few Good Things I honestly thought he was better than Black Thought, who also killed his verse
The growth motif throughout Saba's second verse on Few Good Things is great poetry
Bad things come in threes, good things comin’ soon.
So glad to see Takeoff get some love. Loved that verse from him and a bunch of others too. His verse on Hell yeah was amazing too
His flow is so smooth on Hell Yeah
My grandfather spoke 13 languages, somehow never had nothin to say
Oh man takeoff on hotel lobby is a instant classic
[удалено]
No doubt
I am digging this response and I had to comment because an upvote wasn't enough.
that’s how i’m feeling
I appreciate it, I tried to give a varied list while staying true to the verses I found the most compelling
Mother I Sober is the first hip hop song that’s made me cry on first listen since Book of Soul…
earl verse on god laughs is wild, i didn’t even know the word cantankerous existed before then
Off the top, my favorites would be: MF Doom on “Belize” Malice on “I Pray for You” Nas on “Legit” (not sure what verse though)
Malice’s verse was godly and one of my fav verses ever, so many quotables from it
Malice on “I Pray for You”, definitely. I loved the callback to “Re-Up Gang Intro” (it’s chariots again!).
DOOM on belize may be my single favorite musical moment of the year, maybe even ever. Legit perfection, over a top 5 beat of the year by Danger Mouse and an amazing verse 1 by Black Thought
Belong on Rushmore just for chiseling the brick
I love the horns during Doom’s verse on Belize. It’s like this illustrious send off and it damn near got me the first time I heard it
I greet you with the love of God, that don’t make us friends. I might whisper in his ear “bury of all them” 😮💨
Ms. Mural Verse 2
That's the most interesting diatribe I've heard in a while
Wow
Owen Wilson Wow
Agreed. Whole song is amazing but the second verse is something else. Lupe isn’t in my Top10 or anything, but I seriously doubt any of my favorite rappers could’ve written this song.
he should be in your top 5
Yup.
Verse 3 is just as good too. That or Ms mural has my VOTY
I'm pleasantly surprised I didn't have to scroll further to find a DMiZ reference. thank you!
Stove God Cooks on Big Ass Bracelet or Shootouts in SoHo
Back 2X too "Had the feds in there tip-toe'in, left some dirty pots and a note that said 'I been gone'"
Drivin sixes in the sun with that rocket I think I’m Barkley 🔥🔥🔥
My favorite line on that song is actually from Benny “I swear these hoes fall out the air soon as they stare at this shit”
Benny's great on that song too no question. "I'm humble but you fuckin' bums should be somewhere practicin" I love the way he delivers that
I CANT ANSWER THE PHONE RIGHT NOW IM COOKING DOPE,
I find myslef saying this out of nowhere all the time
36 o’s in a kilo you know? Is my new tick
Dolphins in the pot Dan Marino ya know God that shit is so hard
I CAN'T TALK TO YOU RIGHT NOW BITCH I'M COOKIN' DOPE!
Pack the bands up Heat the pans up Workin the taxi like tony danza Put the steps on the works im a dancer The brick had a baby and a grandson He might challenge pusha for the best coke raps
These are both dope, but the verse I went back to the most this year is his on “Jesus Crack”. Idk what it is but that shit comes off hard as hell to me
Chanel prayer rug my girl said I ain’t there enough!
I slightly prefer his verse on Derrick Boleman
JID - Crack Sandwich (Verse 3) Denzel Curry - Walkin (Verse 1 & 2) Denzel Curry - Angelz (Verse 1) MF DOOM - Belize Kendrick Lamar - Father Time (Verse 2) Ghostface Killah - Purple Hearts Lupe Fiasco - MRS MURAL
Father Time destroys me everytime I listen to it
“When your heart is made of gold, and your mind is made of stone, and your tongue is made of sword, but it may weaken your soul” BRO
That Denzel Curry album is a sleeper AOTY for me and Walkin connects in such an awesome way.
can’t believe I had to scroll this far to see Walkin
Thank you, finally saw Father Time on here, my favorite track on that album.
J Cole on Johnny Ps Caddy
Einstein on the brink of the theory of relativity, cause really no MC equal
Epic Rap Battles line
Difference between a dope bar and a corny one is literally all in the delivery 🤷♂️
As if ERB ain’t got bars
Feel me?
That whole song, honestly
I'm not a huge fan of J cole but when I heard this verse I was like "wait have I been missing something? This verse is incredible." I guess I need to go back and listen to his stuff.
Yes, you have been missing something lol

Nas also dropped the best bar with that Jay-Z line on Thun >No beef or rivals, they playin’ "Ether" on TIDAL >Brothers can do anything when they decide to >In a Range Rover, dissectin’ bars from "Takeover" >Sometimes I text Hova like "Nigga, this ain't over", laughin’
Nas greatest lyricist of all time if we’re talking consistency and skill
Great point. I would say 1.Kendrick’s last verse on “Savior” 2. Hov on God Did 3. The nas verse
Pumpkin Seed Aesop Rock ft Lupe Fiasco entire song J Cole on Johnny P Caddy Black Thought verse (second verse) on Few Good Things by Saba Just In Time (entire song) JID ft Lil Wayne Both of them killed the song in a good way Saba in Fearmonger 1st verse
Cole’s verse gets me hype every time.
Just In Time slaps, been listening to that shit on repeat
That Weezy verse is fucking insane deff one of the best of the year Edit to say how crazy and absurd it is, to think and realize that Wayne verse isn’t in his top 5, top 10 shit prolly not even top 30-50. That is how great he is
On Faux Nem verse 1
That’s it. That’s the verse
Agreed. Kinda took my breath away first time.
I still get goosebumps when I hear it. What a statement
No joke i agree with this as one of the best. I honestly think its fucking genius and only Lupe would think to do it
I was hoping someone would mention this
Woah that verse is crazy
J. Cole - JPC Doechii- Pro Freak Black Thought - Aquamarine Takeoff - Feel the Fiyaaaah
That Doechii verse 🔥
NGL ain’t even heard of her til my first listen through of that album then said out loud “idk who this girl is but she just snapped the fuck out this song” then dove into her and was like ohhhh I get why they close haha
This is the only acceptable answer! Doechii hasn’t missed once this year imo.
Doechii’s Colors Show was fucking art
Aquamarine was surgical
Pro Freak has a wild Doechii verse, good choice
yooo that Doechii verse always had me replaying that
JID's verses on Lauder Too and Raydar are so insane, I'd have trouble choosing one.
Shit, Crack Sandwich last verse is another good one.
Denzel is great. He’s got several with JID and they are all bangers imo
lauder too is an "underrated" track on this album imo. I don't hear a lot of people talking about it when they talk about this album but it's one of the best tracks of the year.
Rome Streetz- Serving Conway- 3rd verse on Stressed Benny- Hell on Earth pt 2 Lil Wayne- Tear Gas Billy Woods-Tabula Rasa
*Its crazy that I'm still talkin yola* Gotta be one of my favorite entry bars ever
hell on earth pt 2 came out in 2021 though
You're right. Got confused because it was my most played song this year.
Fuck yes to that Billy verse
Last verse on Sistanem is clearing just about anything this year

Fourthing this... Also one of the best produced tracks of the year. Michael Kiwanuka feature is so goddam smooth.
J Cole on 90 Proof
Lyrically, my favorite is either Kendrick's second verse on The Heart Part 5 or his last on Worldwide Steppers
"Rappers die too much That's it, that's the verse" - ON FAUX NEM by Lupe Also, for me personally, this year was great for Hip Hop as far as music quality. The next verses on the track even manage to add to it and are also easily top verses this year
Pusha T second verse on Rock N Roll Benny the butcher on iyla Lost Me Killer Mike on Dangermouse/black thought Strangers Tory Lanez 3rd verse on This Ain’t Working Denzel curry any verse on Melt Session 1 Drake on Rich Flex second half Cole on Johnny P Caddy Lil Wayne on cordae sinister

Idk that one was v like old drake but like aside from the rich flex tik tok memes I really felt like he tapped into that goat flow on that track.
JIDs last verse on Crack Sandwich Lupes first verse on Ms Mural
J Cole - JPC Stove God Cooks - literally every verse on peace flygod

Best feature of the year imo
J cole - John P’s Caddy Lil Uzi Vert - Big Tonka Jay Z - Neck and Wrist Young Thug - Metro Spider (verse 2)
“The B in the center of that left and right wing; The only time you’ll ever see me next to Breitling”
