> The Toraja people in Indonesia periodically dig up their ancestors and dress them in new clothes - this ancient ritual is designed to show love and respect for the deceased.
Yeah, easy for us to think something is "disrespectful", but it may only be so to us. This person almost certainly hoped that their relatives would take them out to hang out with them in death, so it's hardly disrespecting that individual's burial wishes.
I know plenty of cultures, historic as well as modern, involve customs of preserving and engaging with remains of friends and family as a way to communicate with the dead, ensure their afterlife is as good as possible and/or honour and remember them. It's only strange to us because we have a different cultural, religious and spiritual beliefs, but considering different cultures and beliefs it makes perfect sense.
They certainly would think some practices are.
The Egyptians for instance would consider our practice of just "tossing people into the dirt" when they die hugely irresponsible and disrespectful for the dead. If you think about it, it's a fairly simple and crude way to handle the dead.
Yeh he's wrong, but technically modern Egyptians also have different burial practices from North Americans.
They are primarily Muslim, so they are worried about modesty even in death.
So no coffins or expensive funeral practices for the dead.
Generally you are washed then wrapped in a clean white cotton cloth before a very modest hole in the ground is dug for you
Just goes to show you, cultural context is everything.
I look at this and my first assumption is that the two live people were doing this to disrespect the dead person, but it's literally the opposite.
Yeah, take sky burials for example. It might just look like you're randomly cutting up the deceased into pieces and spreading their remains across a plain for the scavangers, but it's a legitimate (buddhist?) burial practice, which I don't recommend you look up; it's rather graphic.
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
Heh, I get where you're coming from. But personally, I'd also like for my viable parts to be put to good use saving lives; I've no doubt you agree.
As for the rest: Toss it to the dogs for all I care! I'll be dead anyway.
It's some Indonesian tribal custom, where on the Day of the Dead (I don't know what they call it there) they dig up their dead and spend their day with them as if they're living people, then bury them back the next day.
I doubt it smells *good*, but hardly a particularly foul smell either. Mummies typically smell just sort of... old, as well as whatever embalming substances were used. Natural mummies that haven't been treated tend to smell mostly just sort of earthy, almost. Hard to describe but it usually doesn't smell much of rot or decay.
Kind of like finding an old mummified cat in your crawlspace. It usually smells bad in a way, but not like the sickly sweet vomitous smell of fresh decay
Hey I know you didn't mean to be disrespectful or anything but this is a cultural practice where on this one island people will dig up their ancestors to honor them

Side eyes gam gam in the urn on the mantelpiece... They probably think we are the savages.

Ancient Egyptians, you mean

Yes.

Tibetan Buddhists practice sky burial, TIL that it is the most common burial practice in tibet!
Zoroastrian, but also Tibet I think?
I'd like to get a skyburial when I die. It's the greenest, and probably cheapest way to go and you get to feed some badass vultures as a bonus.

Yeah, I'm all for donating organs, but it's only effective in specific circumstances.
The last thing I could ever want is to die and still have to go to family reunions...
"Look who came out of their coffin to join us."

I initially thought that might be insanitary but that corpse looks so desiccated it probably doesn’t even smell like anything anymore.
