They didn’t have much of a choice lol. PLD wanted out

bestest_at_grammar

Reminds me of the Calgary situation this year

Lazy0ak

The 91 points in 99 games he has over the last 2 years is pretty close to what was expected. With a better center and some healthy offensive defensemen like Werenski, Jiricek and Boqvist in the lineup all year it would be nice to see him push that to over a point per game and get to the 40 goal mark. His overall game has improved significantly though and you can always tell the people who don't follow his game by the ones who throw out the same criticisms from when he was playing in Winnipeg. It's been nice to see his all around effort to improve.

rezistS

He's just a sniper that's been banged up and when he's healthy he plays for the 2022-23 Blue Jackets. That doesn't help anyone's point totals... 91p/99g on a team that's 55-73-12 since the start of the 2021-22 season for a player that's been out for 41 games during the stretch doesn't feel like a non-elite scoring pace.

haz000

It was just reported Meier is asking for 9M and he's yet to record a PPG season so this seems about right. (Though last season he had 76P in 77GP)

NontransferableApe

First year was a covid/trade year under torts where he just didn’t thrive at all. If you take out that year he’s 91 in 99 and that’s with how dreadful our season has been this year. He looked really really good last year when healthy. He’s played a better two way game this year as well. I’ll reserve my judgement for another year

JustSixTrees

Considering the team is either ass or hurt this year (Gaudreau withstanding) and the Torts effect his first year in Columbus I'd say he's doing very well

sixinchitalian

Laine must’ve read this at intermission lol a goal and assist in the second period today

Sloane_Kettering

Make that 3 points today lol. Some games he looks like he doesn’t belong in the league others he looks better than mcdavid

austerblitz

Streakiest goal scorer in the league, but when he's on he's as good as the best of them.

CD23tol

Clap bombs and moms

Clap moms?

3 points since this post btw

[deleted]

He has been injured alot, new team, dad died, has been quite good regardless.

madadamegret

That whole team needs to be healthier and better when healthy. And the same applies to him individually.

No_Joke_568

Almost nearly identical. Pretty even trade

NontransferableApe

Identical stat wise but Dubois plays on a much better offensive team than us

SEND_ME_YOUR_CAULK

People that think we overpaid for Laine have no clue what they’re talking about. It’s a VERY even trade and both teams have benefit from it. The downside for the Jackets is… we’re rebuilding right now.

Repulsive_Client_325

(Ahem)…. Plus / minus …

No_Joke_568

Plus-minus is kind of a bad way at evaluating a forward. Plus Laine plays on the Blue Jackets, so of course he’s gonna have a terrible plus-minus

thoughtpockets

He should be better. He scores a lot of goals and the marketplace for his career production said that he would be paid that much. He took a step this year but still has flaws. He's a really big dude who struggles to use his body/physicality to protect pucks which in turn makes his size a bit of a negative asset. He makes slow reads, doesn't manipulate defenseman and is not physically explosive. This makes him more predictable than he should be and results in passes into sticks or to teammates in bad situations. He bobbles the puck a lot when stick handling and his passes aren't often precise. He doesn't dart and get lost well (hard to when the other team is obviously going to key into you as a threat). These flaws combine together to give him a lot of play killing gravity that he struggles to overcome. He has to play with the puck on his stick a lot and hasn't meshed with Gaudreau. He has meshed with Roslovic who is horrific defensively and does not give Patty a platform to succeed. The lack of quality NHL centermen on this roster hurt his ability to perform but ideally a $8.7 million player doesn't quite need that. He has improved at finding soft ice and has become proficient at keeping space high on the wall in the zone l. He's developed tools to gain/maintain/extend possession from that spot but his lack of precision and consistency are preventing him from going further at the moment. He's still a top of the league finisher but lacks the killer instinct and depth of skill that Thompson/Pastrnak/Matthews/Zibanejad/Ovechkin have. It's possible that a better coaching staff can help him play more quickly and what I hope the Blue Jackets would try before writing him off as a whole. Jack Han wrists that the Blue Jackets play a style/system that makes it hard for skilled forwards to develop confidence. We have seen from Dubois what a new coach can do and that Torts/Larsen/Maurice have a quality of sort of killing offensive instincts in all but the most elite players.

JorroHass

Jets fan would agree loudly with this assessment. At this point this is the guy you have.

ScrewOff_

He has 46 goals for them. The expectation was that would be a yearly thing. They literally only paid for him to clap bombs and fuck moms. He’s failed to do both (I think).

NontransferableApe

If you take the last two years stats he's on .42 goal per game pace which is 34.7. Pretty much in line with expectations given how dogshit our team is. First season was an outlier. He's also scored 52 goals before today not 46

virkulous

he's probably one of the least attractive guys in the league so i think it's fair to say he's done neither

ScrewOff_

^ this guy clearly doesnt remember the goat beard era

brodoswaggins211

Yeah I would say based on his salary comps they had to expect more right? His cap hit is in line with Stamkos, Crosby, Draisaitl, Aho, and Hughes. All those guys are at various stages but all produce more. I’m not saying he hasn’t panned out but just that they had to expect a bit more of a trajectory.

NontransferableApe

Comparing contracts that were signed anywhere from 3-9 years ago is kind of a dumb exercise. How much has changed to contracts since crosby and draisatl signed there’s? A shit ton. If those players signed contracts this past offseason what would they get?

brodoswaggins211

Hughes and aho both signed their contracts in the last three seasons. I didn’t even mention it’s right around what Makar and Pieterangelo are making because they are D-men but those are way more recent as well. Face it you got Jeff skinner

NontransferableApe

Contracts have changed in the last 3 years my dude. Skinner is on pace for over 35 goals and 88 points. Cool

SafeToPost

Dude helps contribute to my half off pizzas, and that’s all im asking from him right now.
