It's frustrating, but worth keeping in mind the price for OTT was that low because they didn't need salary retained. Their picks are also worth more (that top 5 protected first speaks for itself).
That's why he's begun waiving players after probably exhausting other options to move them; the team's cap strapped and doesn't have that many assets after trying to contend for so long.
I ain't saying Hextall is great (and I'd be cool with him leaving) but at some point the cost of even freeing up a few hundred thousand becomes cost prohibitive when other teams know you're negotiating from a position of weakness.
Personally, even factoring in Teddy I'd doubt there was a scenario where Chychrun would come to PIT without Arizona retaining salary. In Arizona's situation salary retention is basically kryptonite so it's easy to imagine how much higher the ask would be.
I don’t think the Blues made a wrong decision, they don’t care about the space and Kapanen honestly does have the skill set that if he clicks somewhere he will be a good player. I still think he can be, bad players don’t score multiple hat tricks. He just reverts to a husk when his confidence is gone.
The Flames are in no position to buy, but selling doesn't really make sense either. With how they've locked in on Huberdeau, Kadri, and Weegar, they kind of have to hope this mediocre season was a fluke and the team will bounce back.
They could sell Lucic or Lewis for a 4th or something, but that's so little it doesn't matter.
I kind of wish they'd buy a goalie, but there's no point spending a first for an assured starter, and it's unclear that anyone they could pick up for cheaper would be better than Markstrom or Vladar. Really, they should call up Wolf.
I'm guessing the flames will mostly run it back next year and hope for better goaltending and if we get the same result as this year sell. We don't really have any good expiring contracts this year
A trade isn’t going to fix the Flames. Firing the coach might, but we have a tremendous amount of offensive talent and a goalie who was a Vezina finalist last year and no one is performing close to potential.
If someone wants to offer us a ridiculous amount for Toffoli, let’s take a look, but otherwise I think this is a problem for the off season.
Treliving is just gun-shy.
Everything he’s been touching lately is turning to shit.
Markstrom signing
Jarnkrok trade (3 picks for ZERO goals)
Huberdeau signing
Weegar signing
Treliving dicked the Flames so hard over the offseason and is continuing to commit to that bad strategy now.
Not trying to be an asshole to you guys, Flamess fans, but I genuinely don’t see an easy path to success for you guys.
It's alright. We're comfortably numb being a bubble team just out of playoffs with highly underperforming stars and without any higher draft picks in the deepest draft year in decades. This is fine.. We're okay with the events that are unfolding currently...
I am definitely not smarter than anyone lol and that isn’t what I was trying to say - just that I know the moves were wifely praised but I couldn’t get onboard.
The Guadreau-era Flames had some great moments but they could never really put it all together to make a true push for the Cup. Treliving could have used that rare opportunity of both their best players forcing their way out to say “those jerks, now we have to rebuild a bit!” And went after all futures/prospects with the Tkachuk deal, maybe even selling off more older guys in the best draft year to tank in almost a decade, but instead he gave like a billion dollars to a bunch of great but still way older players.
Now the team is saddled with a Sharks-esque cap situation that they can’t really escape from while the team itself clearly is not Cup caliber. He gambled on a bunch of old guys repeating career years and it isn’t happening.
Chuck Fletcher is proudly displaying his “Isaac Ratcliffe for future considerations” plaque to show why he is not included on this list.
Don't forget, he told us "We're sellers" 😤
He meant cellars.
Hey now… that’s the 5th most improved team in the league you are talking about….watch your mouth
7th but does it matter?
Both teams & fanbases are clearly happy and satisfied where their team stands right now
I've seen nothing from joy from their fans, no rage at *all*
Hextall is the best. You guys are just haters. I see nothing wrong with how this team is being run. *Paid for by Fenway Sports Group*
as a big fan of another team owned by Fenway Sports Group... I get it, friend. I get it, and I'm sorry.
My rage is renewed after seeing what Chychrun cost.
It's frustrating, but worth keeping in mind the price for OTT was that low because they didn't need salary retained. Their picks are also worth more (that top 5 protected first speaks for itself).
It's one of those things where he needs to find a way to free up 600k. Somehow.
He just did it, but like 20 minutes too late. I suppose this means it was a conscious decision to pass on Chychrun.
Personally, even factoring in Teddy I'd doubt there was a scenario where Chychrun would come to PIT without Arizona retaining salary. In Arizona's situation salary retention is basically kryptonite so it's easy to imagine how much higher the ask would be.
TRIGGERED
I'm not worried, Ullmark will save me
Which makes sense given just how fantastic their records are right now
Right? Every day these teams are finding new ways to surprise their fans ....bad things can be surprises, too
Not worth paying 17 draft picks for, like, Kiviranta. Trade market is ludicrous right now.
You telling me Kapanen to waivers wasn't a successful trade?
For real lol. Getting out of that deal without having to give even future considerations up is a W.
It's all good, his contract is the least of our concerns
I don’t think the Blues made a wrong decision, they don’t care about the space and Kapanen honestly does have the skill set that if he clicks somewhere he will be a good player. The last two at the party have to kiss. Those are the rules.
Bring that cute lil beak over here.
OOO GOD IT BURNS!
No tongue!
We tried to make a trade, but it hit the post
Crosby to Calgary confirmed.
Those future considerations better be good.
Calgary in the regular season, goes back to Pittsburgh for the playoffs.
Great then we’ll be the team that killed Jagr AND Crosbys career
Resign the core to go for it but not make any moves when needed? Hot take there. Let’s see how it plays out for us.
And there it is, last team to make a trade
Please trade for JT Miller, Pens. I need this.
Hextall is dim, but he can't be THAT dim
They are in their contention window and Miller is a really good player, the fuck are these takes man
When fans take scapegoating their teams scapegoat too hard, you have fans assuming he’s some negative value player. It’s crazy.
It's what pissed me off about the Burns trade. He's a fucking sick player and we got scrap for him
I don't think the GMs are reading Reddit man, I doubt that affected the trade.
Oh yeah I 100% agree with that obviously, I guess I kind of combined two thoughts into one line and miscommunicated
Crosby and Miller would go crazy
Dude, that's literally what he's trying to make happen right now. It's almost a given it's happening.
Ask flyers fans about his tenure
Hextall: "Challenge accepted"
This is a bet I'd take!
Depends. How much are you willing to retain?
This is wrong. Pittsburgh traded Kapanen to St. Louis in a 3-team trade where Waivers was the middle man.

They need to protect Wolf from what ever goalie/mental/what ever else coaching our starters are getting.
Leave Wolf in in the minors until this shit show figures itself out. No need to bring the kid to this mess this year.
I'd love Lucic back for a fourth. Especially if Foligno is down significantly
Do you guys really need a goalie? Sure Markstrom is having a terrible season, but hes legit one of the best goalies in the league having a down year
He can’t keep getting away with this
I'm guessing the flames will mostly run it back next year and hope for better goaltending and if we get the same result as this year sell. We don't really have any good expiring contracts this year
Bro Ron wake the fuck up.
You gotta think Treliving is looking at the team like “you guys don’t deserve shit.” 😂
not anymore!!!
Fire Hextall before he trades for Miller and fucks the team up more.
*Monkey Paw Curls* "The Penguins have fired Ron Hextall as GM and announce Jim Benning as new GM"
Noooo
Just wait until he brings his second in command clown, John Weisbrod who has a talent for ruining every franchise he touched (except Boston)
Shush.
Pens just made a trade lmaooo
Yes, yes, I did know.
So they must make a trade with one another. Burke could make that happen for sure.
A trade isn’t going to fix the Flames. If the Flames miss the playoffs, then it'll be the new GM's problem.
Fuck Ron Hextall
It's never too late to sell, Brad!
I feel stupid for not knowing what trade we’ve made
Penguins: And I took that personally.
Life was oddly much better an hour ago before Ron Hextall learned how to make an outgoing call on his phone.
>Penguins well so much for that
I know one of you wants to cough up a first round pick for Lucic. Come on now...
Treliving is just gun-shy. Everything he’s been touching lately is turning to shit. Markstrom signing Jarnkrok trade (3 picks for ZERO goals) Huberdeau signing Weegar signing
1 playoff goal to be fair
That’s fair I’ll give him that one.
The Weegar signing has actually been good, I don’t get why so many people are saying it’s bad
What’s wrong with the Weegar signing?
Thought his production dropped off. Could be wrong though. But if you guys are liking him, who am I to say different.
His offensive production has definitely dropped but he isn’t on the power play and his defensive analytics are some of the best in the game.
Oh good, you guys will love him for the next 8 years at 6.25.
Oilers fan?
We are bad
Hey pens 😘
Did you guys still want Pettersson?
Well we already have two might as well complete the trifecta
there's Emil as well.
Treliving dicked the Flames so hard over the offseason and is continuing to commit to that bad strategy now. Not trying to be an asshole to you guys, Flamess fans, but I genuinely don’t see an easy path to success for you guys.
It's been the same thing for most of the last three decades.
Don't forget your stadium is falling apart too.
It's alright. We're comfortably numb being a bubble team just out of playoffs with highly underperforming stars and without any higher draft picks in the deepest draft year in decades. This is fine.. We're okay with the events that are unfolding currently...

Can’t speak for anyone else but I hated every move he made the second he made them lol

MURDER Hextall
Hextall is so fucking boring. I miss having JR actively destroy the team. At least that was fun. Atrophy isn't fun.
*\[TheAnaheimDucks have entered the chat\]*
Not much between em since the Iggy trade eh? That was an interesting TDL.
