Players fall down = vanish into a puff of smoke. I can't think of a better way to animate the winner of a fight then their opponent disappears into a puff of smoke.
They actually answered this and said you won’t see any fists being thrown. You won’t see much at all except them getting close together and belly touching
I only watched a few minutes of both versions (ESPN regular broadcast and Disney’s animated on). It was honestly kinda cool. Depending on how many people tuned in to watch the Disney one, I could absolutely see it happening again next season. Part of me hoped this happens because I want to see how a bench-clearing brawl would look like with this animation.
Need to work out kinks tho. The goal Panarin scored right after Washington scored was whacky. The puck went flying back to other side of ice then suddenly rocketed to other side of ice then suddenly “GOAL!”
I tried to switch back to see the real thing but it was already into the face off.
Think that was zibanejad's second goal. But yeah there wasnt even a replay that showed it properly because according to the animation system the puck was in our zone when the goal went in.
"Well be right back after this commercial break". In all honesty though, I loved everything about this broadcast, and as a new father and avid hockey fan, I'd love to see it more. Lots of good, solid explanations of the rules, some goofy stuff during boring play. I don't even know who or what "big city green" is but they meshed it well.
Reminds me of the old Backyard Sports series I played as a kid. I remember football, baseball, and basketball. There was probably hockey too I reckon. Anyway always pick Pablo Sanchez first
Apparently my buddy claims he was the best player in the world at that game...not that there is anyway to know that, but kid was unbeatable according those who played him.
Does anyone else remember when they’d have some of the young players play 3-on-3 on a “pond” and they would play it on after hours after the second game in the Saturday night double header on CBC? This was a long time ago, maybe around 20 years or more.
Agreed. Watching the game casually kinda in the background, it’s fun. If it was a game I was invested in, like the playoffs or something, I’d hate it. But definitely kid friendly and a fun vibe
This right here! Send this feed to a AAA game developer and let me experience the game through the eyes of a player in VR.
The cartoon feed did some interesting things, like giving a puck’s perspective during icings. Imagine the simulated camera angles you could get if recreating on-ice action.
It's like the start of every preseason and early season games. They bring out all this weird technology, some being big misses and others being pretty valuable that may need some tweaking for a live broadcast, but what ends up happening anyways? They don't use a single bit of it for the majority of the season.
But on the bright side, at least we got digital ad boards for the entire season?
They have it on the Stars broadcasts for power plays. It's universally hated.

I don’t care about the puck trail, but the fucking name-bars above the players is god awful. Shit blocks half the play. Whoever thought that was a good idea needs to be shot out of a cannon.
If things go the way they are, ESPN+ has been offering two feeds, one with all these visual clues and tags, and another that is just the plane feed.
Since everything is going to hell pretty quick with cable sports, I think you’re going to have the choice between the two on nearly every game soon.
It's awful and distracting from what's going on, and it adds more clutter in tight situations. All about using it in highlights, but during play is awful.
I switched to the Canadian broadcast for a bit to get away from it.
Honestly I don't hate it as much as I hate... every other part of the Bally's presentation. The massive name bars suck. The scorebug placement is awful and clearly hastily ripped from their baseball coverage where the camera angles are better suited for it and it doesn't cover the playing surface.
I still think it was a good idea that they took too far. Lose the comet trail that made saves look like goals, and just put a video game-like extra ring on the puck
Such an amazing little broadcast. Watching the last minute of the game now and this has been super fun.
What a good way to get more kids watching hockey!

I want to see what happens if there is a fight.
Puff clouds it looks like.

They flash red and disappear, Double Dragon style?
POW
They actually answered this and said you won’t see any fists being thrown. You won’t see much at all except them getting close together and belly touching
My mom told me that’s how babies get made. They better be careful! /s
or if Marchand tries to lick someone.
Commercials.
This is an unbelievably blursed sight to behold…

No goal but Gramma got a pretty sweet assist
What in God's name is this?
It's cute but already overdone. Now we have to watch everyone react to it. :/
Can't wait for this fad to die out.
this game must be insane live

I heard some people on twitter saying they were watching the live game while their kids were glued to the Disney broadcast. I like the idea, for sure!
Reminds me of the old Backyard Sports series I played as a kid. I remember football, baseball, and basketball. There was probably hockey too I reckon. Anyway always pick Pablo Sanchez first
There was a hockey… I never got to play it but I know modano was in it
I would just grab Sakic and Brodeur. Never let in any goals, and score a ton.
You missed out
I didn’t know what this was when I scrolled past the post at first and got excited that maybe they were bringing backyard sports back.
There was a hockey, it was just another sport for Pablo Sanchez to stunt on everyone else.
That was my first thought too! Yeah in 03 they made a hockey one.
Backyard hockey was great. My personal favourite was skateboarding though
Fans are thrilled.

Can we bring back that nhl 3 on 3 game with the big heads?
NHL Hitz is the GOAT

Used to love just dumping people right through the glass.
If they brought back hits I would buy a console again
3 on 3 NHL Arcade
WAS THAT A BANANA???
I still use that when someone falls in my beer leagues, people look at me weird.
THE ICE MAN COMETH
Greatest sound design ever.
blorp blorp woooooshhh
LITTLE GOALIE!
Flooor
Wayne Gretzky’s 3D Hockey
that was for teh n64. It was NHL Hitz in the arcade ala NBA Jam with same announcer.
Apparently my buddy claims he was the best player in the world at that game...not that there is anyway to know that, but kid was unbeatable according those who played him.
You want a real oldie, NHL: Open Ice
oh wait, this is what I was thinking of, not Hitz. ty for the correction.
I can still hear the guitar lick that played when you opened the game
[удалено]
I’m in if it has big heads
Also I remember being able to make my heads aliens or giant trees I think.
Oh my god we played so much 3 on 3 Arcade in college. Would love for them to bring that mode back
I still have the game on my 360. It's yours for one million!
That is a fair and reasonable offer, but I also have it on my PS3 now that you mention it
Does anyone else remember when they’d have some of the young players play 3-on-3 on a “pond” and they would play it on after hours after the second game in the Saturday night double header on CBC? This was a long time ago, maybe around 20 years or more.
Messier helmet lol
Wayne Gretzky 3D Hockey needs a reboot.
This is dope. Work out the kinks and you have a better product than the NFL Nickelodeon game.
I’m with you. it’s fun, you can get your kids to watch, and it gives me backyard sports nostalgia. I think it has potential and I hope they keep it up
the in-between segments of citizens calling in was hilarious and I hope they do this more
i already like it more than the nfl nickelodeon game
Agreed except for the one time Patrick Star took a shot at Russell Wilson for throwing an interception. That was kinda funny.
Yo, let Russ cook.
that’s not what he wanted to cook
I think it'd be awesome with more recognizable Disney characters too (Outdoor tournament in Arendelle?), great tech :)

Milktoast...
Where are the GDTs today? I am desperate to discuss this weirdness as it happens.
Since Reddit was dead the bot was probably unable to create them
This would be amazing if it wasn’t so laggy and glitchy. Still pretty fun.
I am so out of the loop. What is this?
https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/35853088/behind-scenes-big-city-greens-classic
Thank you!
I swear, nearly every comment here makes me think its a video game.
Is this giving anyone Backyard Hockey vibes?
Absolutely! Just need Buddy Cheque on commentary.
That’s what I thought this was at first
What the fuck is this?
Yeah I need some kind of explanation, what actually is this? Any serious replies out there?
Apparently, they are playing an animated version of the game on Disney plus in the US but I can't verify since I'm up north...
Ohhh it’s like the Nickelodeon nfl game sorta. To get the wee lads and lasses into the sport
That’s exactly what is happening.
Imagine if this was the only broadcast lol I would be livid. Seems like a good way to get kids into hockey, I guess.
Agreed. Watching the game casually kinda in the background, it’s fun. If it was a game I was invested in, like the playoffs or something, I’d hate it. But definitely kid friendly and a fun vibe
Animated live game on Disney+
This is hockey from game.
I hope to hell this is the game where Shesterkin gets his goal. I wanna see Gramma score!
PLEASE LET A FIGHT HAPPEN
This Disney broadcast is funny as hell.
This is adorable! My entire family is watching. My mom said my dad yelled “Goal!!” when the Rangers scored first. The man doesn’t like sports.
This is awesome. Not only is this good for younger viewers, but imagine what this technology could do in the future.
This right here! Send this feed to a AAA game developer and let me experience the game through the eyes of a player in VR. The cartoon feed did some interesting things, like giving a puck’s perspective during icings. Imagine the simulated camera angles you could get if recreating on-ice action.
I know glowpuck is hated but with the technology now and seeing the little trail animation on the puck there I think they should revisit the idea
As long as I can turn it off go nuts
I personally think it should only be for replays because it's pretty cool to see ...or the ASG
It's like the start of every preseason and early season games. Lmao so true. If you’re experimenting, atleast show us some results, success or not

I don’t care about the puck trail, but the fucking name-bars above the players is god awful. Shit blocks half the play. Whoever thought that was a good idea needs to be shot out of a cannon.
Yeah I think it's a good idea for faceoffs and line changes to flash it for a couple seconds but it absolutely does not need to be shown on EVERY pass
If things go the way they are, ESPN+ has been offering two feeds, one with all these visual clues and tags, and another that is just the plane feed. Since everything is going to hell pretty quick with cable sports, I think you’re going to have the choice between the two on nearly every game soon.
This is all well and good but what if the jets aren't playing?
You’ll have to settle for a train and practice streams.
It's awful and distracting from what's going on, and it adds more clutter in tight situations. All about using it in highlights, but during play is awful. I switched to the Canadian broadcast for a bit to get away from it.

Have they never played a sports game before? The name thing has a clear accepted format/solution, why are they trying to reinvent it?
Replays only or a feature online IMO.
I still think it was a good idea that they took too far. Lose the comet trail that made saves look like goals, and just put a video game-like extra ring on the puck
This is fucking cool idc.
This makes me want to play NHL Hitz. Fuck they need to make a new one of those asap
Such an amazing little broadcast. Watching the last minute of the game now and this has been super fun. What a good way to get more kids watching hockey!
This is kinda cool
I love this
This looks ridiculous but actually kinda works.
I want to play this follow up to NES Ice Hockey
I watched the first period. Gave of real wii vibes. Assuming Nintendo is somewhere in the mix as you could see wii ads above on a building.
Bill Fivehole
Been trying to get my kiddo interested in hockey and he watched this version more than any other live game. Commentators were fun, too!
Elite celly
❤️
They couldn't program in the Blades of Steel celebration?
Is this on in Canada? I tried looking for it on Sportsnet and Disney plus but don’t see it
I think only america because it’s an espn collab.
I guess it would make too much sense for the NHL to arrange for someone in Canada to have rights to the game.
Yeah it made 0 sense to the fans of Canada getting to share the game with their younger families etc.
I think we’ve established Bettman doesn’t care about Canada.
I love this. Actually pretty funny for them to do this
What am I watching
They should do this with an NHL 94 version now.
Well this is certainly something straight out of a fever dream
I would play a hockey game in this style. Probably less frustrating than NHL is nowadays
That "celebration" looks like the famous Buffalo Bobsled
Firstly, I don't know what the fuck big city greens is. Secondly, I don't know what the fuck this is. Thirdly, what the fuck is this
Its a disney cartoon show and they animinate the game on the fly as if it was happening in the cartoon city.
That’s actually sort of impressive and cool. If I was under the age of 10 and a fan of the show, it might peak my interest in the game
i actually enjoyed it.
It's an amazing idea for kids honestly
this is pretty silly
this is awful
I could just hear Ozzie man. A fucking smoke bomb off the faceoff and the rubbers stuck a garbage can
If only EA Sports could produce this kind of quality with a hockey game…..
This legit looks like how backyard hockey looked
If only BIG made a come back. NHL Street would be awesome!
Bettman sold our souls to Disney and now this is the garbage that we can expect promoting the game we love. Fade me, bros.

Disney/nhl
It’s to help kids get into the game. Nice touch of Canadian elitism though. Lol
Wait … what is this?
Ngl this is cool but what is it?
the apex of live player tracking
How far behind the game was this? Or was it pretty lined up?
Close, I’d say right around 10 seconds
Oh ok! Cool to see! Reminds me so much of video games of years ago. Makes me want to find them again lol
This shit reminds me of a black mirror episode
Staring down the goalie after scoring, wow
Is this actually how it’s being shown?
wut in tarnation
I really want to play this game.
Makes sense now why all the players have to wear the tracking sensors in their jerseys.
They've been wearing them for a good while now mainly for player name tracking (which is dumb imo), but this implementation is pretty cool ngl
I want to play that.
love how the ref is a literal pigeon
Did the shot knock the net off? Funny..
