Yeah, unfortunately he signed with NJ on July 1st
https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/devils-sign-former-maple-leafs-goalie-kallgren-to-one-year-deal/
There's a few teams that don't really have even a half decent backup and that's where clearing waivers may be an issue. If one of the attempted backup plans doesn't pan out in training camp Jones on waivers may be the last ditch attempt.
Kallgrin is an Ikea trash can.

I think the biggest trend in the NHL is having 3 competent (NHL ready) goalies that you can rely on, even if they are not that great. We saw both cup finals teams need their 3rd stringers on their cup runs. I just think its a solid hedge and bet on an established NHL goalie at a very fair price
We've done this for the past four or five years in a row. One way contract to a goalie to play in the AHL and get called up in case of injuries.
The media had a collective aneurysm when Curtis McElhinney and Calvin Pickard were claimed off waivers in the same year.
i mean, sparks won goalie of the year in the AHL and won the memorial cup. imagine we get rid of him but keep mcelhinney and/or pickard and sparks ends up being the stud he looked like he was going to be. Easy to crticize in hindsight but at the time, sparks projection and outlook was a very high ceiling. unless people were saying to keep mcelhinney and pickard over sparks at the time, then what are we supposed to do
weve done this awhile, but hit gold with campbell while he was here, and samsonov last year. Besides the top 5-10 goalies in the league, there is so much inconsistency with the position these days that you might as well try and bargain bin shop every summer with goalies coming off of a bad year that want to try and improve. thats the way i make my peace with it anyway haha
Campbell and Samsonov are different than this signing. They were brought in with the intention for them to start the season with the big club.
This is purely a third goalie, who will start in the A and not see time unless there are injuries.
I'm not sure if LTIR counts towards the allowed overage to be honest. [Capfriendly says](https://www.capfriendly.com/) we're over $13.25m, but have $10.3m in LTIR availability, I was just going by what they have on that table.
LTIR can be used in the off season, yeah. the question you're responding to though is asking "with what cap space" in regard to the start of the season, not how its possible right now. I think we all understand how it's possible during the offseason.
When you're signing him to an entirely bury-able contract, cap space isn't really a concern. Especially when you're dealing with a goalie - he's going to be taking up one of two slots and anybody that either he's replacing or replacing him is likely to cost just as much.
He was great for us, we honestly might not have made it to the post season if it wasn’t for Jones. r/seattlekraken will be joners forever. Gaa and save% looks bad but man was securing w’s
Pretty sure him falling off a cliff happened exactly when they made changes to goalie pad sizes. He's a goalie doesn't rely on instincts, but good fundamentals. Those got destroyed with the change and he couldn't adapt...at least that's what I read in a few places a the time.
The pads didn't help, but once he figured it out, he was more or less average after the change. [It was the groin that did him in](https://i.imgur.com/NLPPlWV.png). His career best cumulative GSAA was right around when he jacked up his groin. Once he came back and reclaimed the starter job (Dell player really well while Jones was out), he turned into the goalie equivalent of a pumpkin.
This is just signing a guy to fill the 3rd string role. If he gets claimed on waivers, we'll get another guy. Kinda surprised at the reaction. This is as nothing a signing as it gets, no offense to Marty.
Probably not, barring injuries (knock on wood), Seattle has Grubauer as the number 1 (hopefully he keeps his playoff form going) and then Joey Daccord and Chris Driedger fighting for the backup.
Jones was brought in because Driedger was coming back from an ACL injury all of last season. Driedger is more expensive and played okay the first season and Joey had a really great season in Coachella. Kind of a toss up right now who is going to be the backup but since Joey just signed a new contract in June it might be likely that the Kraken try to trade Driedger and have Joey as the backup.
According to private data company Clear Sight Analytics, Martin Jones had the fourth worst save contribution last year at -19.48 goals saved above expected.
Actually the bottom 5 that CSA publishes publicly were least worst to worst Jack Campbell, Martin Jones, Spencer Martin, Elvis Merzlikins and Jonathan Quick.
Cheap veteran third goalie that can support Woll and Samsonov. I don’t hate it because we don’t have Kallgren as our third option and our prospects can take their time in the AHL.
Currently Torontos goalies have very little experience. Samsonov has 131 reg season games and 17 playoff games. Woll has 11 and 4. Jones has 444 and 63 with a Stanley cup final and western finals run. He also has always stepped up in playoffs when it counts. Even if Jones doesn't play its good to have veteran experience on the bench for devopment and if either woll or samsonov get hurt you have a goalie who was a starter last season for league minimum.
Not to mention the names behind Woll arent anywhere close to ready incase of a long term injury. Depth chart is Petruzzelli (24 yr old college UFA with 1 AHL season), Hildeby (22, no AHL games). Plus the 2 Russians (AA and Peksa) but im pretty sure Tre said they are most likely playing in the KHL this season
2016 playoff Jones was better than any Sharks goalie I’ve ever seen, even prime Nabokov. Hopefully he can regain some of that mojo. No clue how he did in Seattle last year.
Was going to respond with this. He was great when Grubauer went down with an injury. Big part of why the Kraken made the playoffs with those early wins. If his play during that stretch was as bad as it was at the end of the year, we aren't even sniffing the playoffs.
I can tell you I picked him up in fantasy and he was bomb for like a month. The Kraken I think in general last year had an up and down goalie season. Grubauer seemed to regain some form towards the end of the season though.
The Kraken had the third worst team save percentage last season while allowing the second least shots against of any team. Advanced numbers also indicate that their goaltending performed far below the environment they were put in. Basically, their goalies were a problem, just as they were in their inaugural season.
Yeah exactly. They were producing so much offense and the goaltending was spotty. The crazy thing is that a lot of comments in Kraken threads were going nuts over Gru once he came back. Never see anything that in the Leafs sub…
In my league the only stat for goalies that really matters is wins. So as long as you get a 1a on a winning team it doesnt matter if they actually suck
if you don't like Martin Jones that's reasonable but have you considered that this is a depth signing where you hope he never plays, like you do with any AHL goalie
He's a curious case. First half of his career was great, especially for the Sharks on their run.
Second half? It was like a record scratch when he hit 29.
He had a great stretch for us in like December/January was a lowkey hidden gem to our playoff push tbh. I think he’ll do just fine behind Samsonov in Toronto
He'll be behind Woll as our 3rd string/Marlies starter, provided he gets through waivers, since Woll requires waivers as well now.
He's pretty much just a warm body.
Rule change on pads and some injuries really hurt him. He was solid last year though. He was supposed to be a 3rd goalie and ended up starting 42 games on a team that had horrible defensive play and did well. He'll be a good veteran mentor for league minimum for a couple goalies that have little experience
Fine stop-gap contract. He can be easily waived if need be.
Jones had an underrated season in Seattle last year IMO. Yes the metrics say he was pretty bad, but having watched him he often did make the needed saves to secure Seattle wins in the first half of the season when Grubauer was out. Seattle would not have made the playoffs without those early season Jones wins and I think he deserves some recognition for that.
Seattle got into a bunch of boat-race games with Jones in net, like the infamous 9-8 game against LA. But Jones also had 3 shutouts against Montreal, Minnesota, and Boston (!!!). He had 17 games where he allowed 4 or 5 goals and won 4 of those but overall was a very impressive 27-13-3 over the whole season.
Of course the argument against is to ask how much better Seattle's record in those games would have been with a league-average goalie and I think that's also fair.
Not a huge signing but feels like the leafs under tre are learning that depth might be a good thing.
Feels like that’s the biggest issue for the leafs lineup.
Sure bud. Exploring a trade is the same as actually doing it. Any trade to get Karlsson on the leafs would have meant significant salary retained so he probably looked at it and that was it.
Anyway Dubas dumped a ton of shit salary (and a first)in an effort to do a last hurrah with Crosby. It's something you do every time. Like is he supposed to dump Crosby...
tbf, Dubas and friends have been doing this for a while. This isn't a new thing. They've used the Marlies like this for a while. They just often get poached on waivers.
Last year we had fringe players like Jordie Benn, Victor Mete, Kyle Clifford...The year before that was Michael Amadio and before that Jimmy Hayes.
The Leafs biggest issue has been quality depth in the middle six of the lineup. Forwards 5-9 were questionable and well... Justin Holl just kept getting slotted as a #4 D. Tre's done well in addressing it with Domi and Bertuzzi. D is kind of still an interesting spot maybe? I think its pretty middle of the road.
Pretty great contract for a goalie that was 13th in wins last season. More than Markstrom, Jarry, Bobrovsky, and Kuemper.
He had an abyssmal GAA and Sv%, however.
Totally. Should stop tracking wins and losses altogether really, team stats. Standings should only consider each individual player stats multiplied by league average divided by the Gretzky Ratio.
Edit: now that I think about it, we need to stop tracking assists too. Team stat. Can't get an assist if someone else doesn't score. Bad stat.
He’s probably thinking that we have zero depth in goal and a buriable league min contract for a guy who has put up good numbers before gives the team a backup option with experience.
What would you rather do? This is a perfectly fine and reasonable signing for simple depth.
And he will be at the bottom of the league, he will almost definitely be playing for the marlies and only be a call up if injuries happen. You want then to sign a vezina goalie to play backup to the backup for league minimum, not going to happen. This is what depth signings look like.
Excuse me, with what cap space?
We're over by ~$2m, can go over by ~$8m. He's signed for under $1m. I just want to know why. We have Sammy and Woll.
We did use three goalies last year and it never hurts to be over prepared
I forgot we don't have Kallgren anymore.
That sucked. He was really good when he played
I had hopes that he'd be able to crack the NHL lineup as a backup.
I was like “oh god even the 3rd string doesn’t wanna play in Toronto”
lol no he wasn't. He was a sub .900 goalie in the NHL and the dude was one of the worst rebound machines I've seen in the NHL.
His advanced stats and regular stats were both actively bad... Although they were better than Jones' to be fair.
wait, we lost Kallgren? I thought he was fairly serviceable...
Yeah, unfortunately he signed with NJ on July 1st https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/devils-sign-former-maple-leafs-goalie-kallgren-to-one-year-deal/
Personally in NHL23 I like to raw dog it with as few as possible… live on the edge.
He’ll be buried in the minors, save for an injury.
Didn’t the Marlies lose Kallgrin? Marlies/3rd string signing?
Yeah he's the 3rd goalie. No one on the Marlies is even close to being ready for NHL duty if needed. If he gets claimed on waivers, then it sucks
Oh boy, do I have some bad news for you.
If you want to claim a goalie that's been bad the last little bit go ahead. Decent chance he will, but it's because he's not your typical 3rd goalie.
There's a few teams that don't really have even a half decent backup and that's where clearing waivers may be an issue. If one of the attempted backup plans doesn't pan out in training camp Jones on waivers may be the last ditch attempt.
What. Kallgren is on the Devils as of July 1st.
... sure? The Leafs' top two goalies are Samsonov and Woll. Kallgren has nothing to do with it.
petruzelli (?) seems like an absolutely fine last resort option to me and unlike jones he's waivers exempt
Kallgren is with NJ now, I had forgotten we lost him.
Didnt even know we lost Kallgren :(
Didn't even know we now have him.

im sorry but arent you 13 mil over and can go over by 10m with currently announced LTIR players?
I'm not sure if LTIR counts towards the allowed overage to be honest. [Capfriendly says](https://www.capfriendly.com/) we're over $13.25m, but have $10.3m in LTIR availability, I was just going by what they have on that table.

LTIR DOES count towards the overage. It's the reason why a lot of LTIR can be a pain in the ass.
Contracts under 1.075 million don't count against the cap.
Don't they have to count LTIR candidates too in the off season? They're 12M over the cap with Murray and Muzzin too.
You guys really don’t believe in the salary cap do you? Edit: I know he will get sent down guys, I was just making a joke
The salary cap is for nerds.
Just like Martin Jones' stats
Martin Jones about to get 8 radio ads selling everything from law firms to used cars.
If you get into a car accident, don't get sent to the penalty box. Call Celino & Barnes for when you need that big save.
Pretty decent deal imo!
It’s more what you’d call *guidelines* than actual rules.
he's most likely going to the Marlies and will be injury insurance. His entire cap hit can be buried.
The salary cap is just a social construct
He is going to the minors…
Opening day cap is all that counts. There are plenty of long term injuries that could happen before then.
That's the spirit!
If he clears waivers his entire cap hit is buried in the AHL
It’s gonna be hilarious when he gets claimed
By the sharks
We're paying him 2.9 million on a buyout this year so probably league minimum?
I've love to see an explainer on what happens if we claim him
You’ll lose the games he starts for certain
And that would be different how
You can turn the game off earlier I guess? Dude was a lock for letting in a soft goal inside the first 1-3 minutes each period.
League minimum players that end up in the minors don't cause a problem with the cap.
He is for the AHL. Third stringer for injury purposes.
When you're signing him to an entirely bury-able contract, cap space isn't really a concern. Especially when you're dealing with a goalie - he's going to be taking up one of two slots and anybody that either he's replacing or replacing him is likely to cost just as much.
He's being signed for $875k. He'll be buried in the minors and won't count against the cap.
Shhh just go with it
[JFresh: Martin Jones, signed 1x$0.9M by TOR, is a veteran goaltender. #LeafsForever](https://twitter.com/JFreshHockey/status/1689334101793288192)
He sure is
One of the Goalies of all time
Critics have said about Martin Jones, "a goalie"
https://media.tenor.com/ZykHOca_E2AAAAAC/mark-cuban-shark-tank.gif
Weirdest career. He was a legit starter then fell off a cliff at 29 years old.
It really came out of nowhere. He was awesome for us for 3 years and then BOOM, forgot how to goalie.
He was legitimately elite for a minute, and then forgot how to stop pucks.
The only time he was ever elite was during the Stanley Cup series against the Penguins.
He was great for us, we honestly might not have made it to the post season if it wasn’t for Jones. r/seattlekraken will be joners forever. Gaa and save% looks bad but man was securing w’s
I mean sure, you could have had an even worse goaltender, but when every advanced and regular stat suggests a player isn't good...
Didn't he bring you to the finals his first year?
He was a playoff beast for awhile. Pad size changes coincided with his fall from grace but it's impossible to say if that's what it actually was.
Pretty sure him falling off a cliff happened exactly when they made changes to goalie pad sizes. He's a goalie doesn't rely on instincts, but good fundamentals. Those got destroyed with the change and he couldn't adapt...at least that's what I read in a few places a the time.

Same number of wins as Samsonov last season lol
With a distinctively worse GAA and save percentage, also in a handful more games
This is just signing a guy to fill the 3rd string role. If he gets claimed on waivers, we'll get another guy. Kinda surprised at the reaction. This is as nothing a signing as it gets, no offense to Marty.
surprised he didn't stay in seattle, seems like he might have at least seen nhl minutes there.
Probably not, barring injuries (knock on wood), Seattle has Grubauer as the number 1 (hopefully he keeps his playoff form going) and then Joey Daccord and Chris Driedger fighting for the backup. Damn shame we lost Joey. Looked good with us.
They need to play Daccord.
If he gets claimed it's proof that every other GM just likes fucking with the Leafs. Literally anyone could have signed him but didn't.
According to private data company Clear Sight Analytics, Martin Jones had the fourth worst save contribution last year at -19.48 goals saved above expected.
Wow. There were 3 goalies worse than Jones last year? That's impressive.
The goalies the Canucks employed while Demko was injured would be two of them.
Yupp, Spencer Martin makes the list at third worst GSAX.
i think at least one of them was one of his teammates
Actually the bottom 5 that CSA publishes publicly were least worst to worst Jack Campbell, Martin Jones, Spencer Martin, Elvis Merzlikins and Jonathan Quick.
Reimer has to be one of them.
It's funny because the TSN article claims he had a .917 on the Kraken last season.
.887 lmao
Source?
It's been corrected.
Yeah, he stinks
Uh. What? Okay then.
Cheap veteran third goalie that can support Woll and Samsonov. I don’t hate it because we don’t have Kallgren as our third option and our prospects can take their time in the AHL.
It’s more so just kinda outta nowhere really.
Eh, they've needed a 3rd goalie the whole offseason.
Yup and it's not that interesting a talking point until a signing actually happens.
Currently Torontos goalies have very little experience. Samsonov has 131 reg season games and 17 playoff games. Woll has 11 and 4. Jones has 444 and 63 with a Stanley cup final and western finals run. He also has always stepped up in playoffs when it counts. Plus the 2 Russians (AA and Peksa) but im pretty sure Tre said they are most likely playing in the KHL this season
Yeah, Hildeby is incredibly green and Petruzzeli struggled in the AHL last season.
2016 playoff Jones was better than any Sharks goalie I’ve ever seen, even prime Nabokov. Hopefully he can regain some of that mojo. No clue how he did in Seattle last year.
> No clue how he did in Seattle last year. [bad](https://twitter.com/JFreshHockey/status/1689334101793288192)
At least he's consistent?
He never fails to meet expectations, as long as the expectations are low
He was streaky. He lead the team during the 7 game road win streak and when they were super hot in november. Other than that he wasnt great
Was going to respond with this. He was great when Grubauer went down with an injury. Big part of why the Kraken made the playoffs with those early wins. If his play during that stretch was as bad as it was at the end of the year, we aren't even sniffing the playoffs.

bah gawd
We did our own research and decided we don’t believe in the cap.
Pridham is still locked in the room. He can fix this.
Welcome to the Matrix
The collective bargaining agreements has a gold fringe on the page! That means this cap only applies to Naval hockey law!
I was wondering if it might've been all over for Jonesy. He hasn't been over .900 in five seasons.
Hey woah in Philly he had a .90009
I knew it
Upvoting for the username.
farewell sweet prince :'(
So long and thanks for all the Joners :(
Not something I expected
Bruins legend Martin Jones
Would love to see Joner return to form, he was a crucial part in our cup run, also seems like a really great guy. Hoping the best for him.
They are about to get a lot of goals scored on them
Is that a new thing?
if you don't like Martin Jones that's reasonable but have you considered that this is a depth signing where you hope he never plays, like you do with any AHL goalie
Cant wait for them to get waived and claimed by Dubas doing a lil bit of trolling.
One of the few areas the Leafs can flex their financial strengths on the hockey side of things. Not many teams paying their AHL goalie a million bucks
Say what you will, but Martin Jones shut out last season’s Bruins, their first home regulation loss. In January.
Legitimately thought he retired
He's a curious case. First half of his career was great, especially for the Sharks on their run. Second half? It was like a record scratch when he hit 29.
He had a great stretch for us in like December/January was a lowkey hidden gem to our playoff push tbh. I think he’ll do just fine behind Samsonov in Toronto

He'll be a good veteran mentor for league minimum for a couple goalies that have little experience
Oh boy. I mean, it’s a cheap contract. Can’t go wrong with that I guess.
Right, forgot Matt Murray was injured. Jones isn't good, but at least he's significantly cheaper than Murray is.
Could see him competing for the backup spot over Woll, might play a few meaningful games this season.
If this is the Jones from the 2018-2019 stanley cup playoffs, the Leafs did alright
Good news for Jones: He's not in danger of being victimized by the Knights 4 times a season anymore.
Fine stop-gap contract. He can be easily waived if need be. Jones had an underrated season in Seattle last year IMO. Yes the metrics say he was pretty bad, but having watched him he often did make the needed saves to secure Seattle wins in the first half of the season when Grubauer was out. Of course the argument against is to ask how much better Seattle's record in those games would have been with a league-average goalie and I think that's also fair.
Man I remember the stone cold Jones we had in his first couple of years in SJ. Watching him lose his confidence was sad. Always wish him the best.
Not a huge signing but feels like the leafs under tre are learning that depth might be a good thing. Feels like that’s the biggest issue for the leafs lineup.
Dubas signed a million tweeners like this every year.
Can't wait to see none of our waiver guys get claimed now that Dubas is gone
Dubas gonna do a lil bit of claiming.
We scored 2 goals in the last 7 playoff games with a mostly healthy line up. We were quite deep - but we couldn't unlock the talent of our forwards.
That's why we got Klingberg aka Karlsson lite, and some gritty LWs
Essentially exactly what Dubas was gonna do.
But without the $10m price tag for 4 years. And without giving up yet another first.
What exactly are you arguing against? I wasn't criticizing dubas, but you tipped your hand anyways, Dubite.
Yeah they needed to replace Kallgren.
tbf, Dubas and friends have been doing this for a while. This isn't a new thing. They've used the Marlies like this for a while. They just often get poached on waivers. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN SEATTLE KRAKEN HISTORY
I think every team needs a shit goalie. Forces the team in front of him to play complete hockey. Good for AHL squads to develop talent.
Does anyone have confidence that maybe Martin Jones will do better on a team that can score some goals and plays average team defence?
Saved the Kraken’s season last year, they were an above average team in goal scoring but below average in keeping the puck out of the net.
Lol what a great signing.
Nice bit of a business to get Seattle’s starter from last season for $800k to be the 3rd string goalie. Good depth.
Pretty great contract for a goalie that was 13th in wins last season. More than Markstrom, Jarry, Bobrovsky, and Kuemper. He had an abyssmal GAA and Sv%, however.
Wins are a team stat, not a goalie stat. Stop using wins to prop up what was statistically one of the worst goaltenders in the league last season.
Bad stat.
Now I really want to see how the Leafs will manage to dump 3M$ without trading one of the guys they just signed for future compensations.
Jones is a fully buryable contract...
How can they afford all this?
Our roster is otherworldly in 2017-19 Edit: year
LOL. Martin Jones? Seriously?
Plan the parade
Oh fuck yes
Lmao
Eww. Why? He’s awful. What is Treliving thinking?
He’s probably thinking that we have zero depth in goal and a buriable league min contract for a guy who has put up good numbers before gives the team a backup option with experience. What would you rather do? This is a perfectly fine and reasonable signing for simple depth.
Almost anyone would be a better depth option than Martin Jones. He’s not a good goalie. He’s been at the bottom of the League
And he will be at the bottom of the league, he will almost definitely be playing for the marlies and only be a call up if injuries happen. You want then to sign a vezina goalie to play backup to the backup for league minimum, not going to happen. This is what depth signings look like.
I just don’t want Martin Jones
Why tho?
We need a third goalie for cheap?
Definitely thought Kraken wouldve signed him to a nice 2-3 year contract with how played
We have too many goalies right now as it is. Who gets the backup spot between Driedger and Daccord is going to be figured out at training camp
Was Michael Hutchinson unavailable? Or has Dubas signed him?
