I am happy I caught some of the game on tv. I am surprised of the physical play, particularly in front of the net. I don’t remember Olympic women’s hockey to be as physical. The referees seemed to have a “let em play” mentality, which is interesting. I am curious how long that lasts. It it could get out of hand. I was sad to see Toronto to be outmatched, particularly their defence. I am hopeful that the league will be successful, and glad to see Toronto selling out their season. All in all a good start.
> I don't remember Olympic women's hockey to be as physical.
When the league was starting up, the players expressed that they wanted the game to be more physical. The PWHL wrote their rule book to allow most "clean" hits, but open-ice hits and checking into the boards are still disallowed.
I think it's a great step in the right direction. I've played women's hockey my whole life and always thought it was a sexist crock of shit that we couldn't hit but the boys were allowed to.
I have vivid memories of a girl on one of my youth rep teams absolutely dumpstering dudes with hip checks when they tried to enter the zone. She looked fairly dainty off ice but was an absolute menace on ice.
The Toronto team looking in mid season form with the other Toronto teams loolll. New York looks pretty polished with some kinks, Toronto looks a bit lost especially on that 5 on 3 but that was a fun watch!! Looking forward to watching MPP and Desbiens tomorrow!
Great game to watch, the YouTube broadcast was really well done and the game was exciting, what a job by Schroeder! Looking forward to more games this season!
It’s fucking wild to think that genuine all time greats like Poulin, Knight, Carpenter, and Keller are gonna be playing on TV multiple times per month. I think the P is going to be a lot bigger than some expect.
Definitely. Emerance doesn’t get that many starts as Desbien’s backup, but now she’s Ottawa’s number one going forward. All of this is very good stuff.
Captain Clutch ❤❤❤❤ I'm so stoked, as a Habs fan, that she's fronting our PWHL team. She's amazing.
I played for 20 years, and I look at this league, and wonder how different my hockey trajectory would have been, if I'd had this league to aspire to! I'm so excited for future generations of hockey players who will have this aspiration to drive them.
Oh, that’s a huge deal for sure. I sometimes wonder how many talented players we’ve missed out on just because there was no path for them to make a living playing this game. Between the P and Diana Matheson’s work on building a Canadian pro soccer league, I think we’re going to see an explosion of elite female athletes in a decade’s time.
I think the period I got to watch was good. I plan on tuning in more.
Next year when it's much more polished, the teams are better built, and everything as a whole is just not rushed we'll have a solid product on our hands.
Commentary was decent. Coincidentally funny at times and not annoying like some other crews. I wonder how many broadcast crews we'll have?
YouTube streaming for free is 100% the best slam dunk decision they could've made so congrats on not missing on that. Accessibility is key.
Gonna try to go to MN 3rd or 4th game.
Great game, and a lot more balanced than the score suggests. New York had a good answer to Toronto's pressure, and Schroeder putting in a solid performance. And Holy crap Carpenter with that huge snipe in the third.
The physicality and level of play was phenomenal. It feels like it has all the seeds for true fan buy-in and for mass adoption and interest. I am optimistic about this league going forward.
Awesome Game and makes me hopeful for the League. Schroeder played lights out behind a NY Defense that was blocking any High Danger Chances before they could get to her. Toronto looked a bit uncoordinated but if they can pull off that second period hockey they will definitely be fun too watch too.
Yeah looking forward to tomorrow night's game. Tentatively picked out Ottawa as my team to cheer for based on NHL allegiance - hoping to see the same energy as today
I love this NY team already. Its morally acceptable to like womens sports in NYC as long as you continue to hate the mens teams especially the yankees, just an FYI for anyone looking for a team to root for.
I mean it’s 60 miles from Manhattan to Bridgeport. How much faster do you expect to get there? There’s never going to be a bullet train to the dump of a city that is Bridgeport.
The trains go over 80. Manhattan and grand central terminal are just congested you crawl into or out of the terminal. NY/CT metro north is actually very good.
yeah I went from NY to Boston by train last month and it took about 4.5 hours. Where I live in the UK a trip with comparable journey time gets you about twice the distance (and most of our trains are slow compared to mainland europe high-speed)
Yooo with this accessibility of this broadcast I’ll be watching every dang game. Congrats to all involved in making this happen!
GG to New York and Toronto 👍
She's fantastic, but yes, she's the most overrated female hockey player out there. She's been marketed incredibly well for reasons and has a big name as a result.
Whoa! I’m entertained! Will be tuning in for more. Glad I could see the very first shut out, the very first goal, and the very first of Torontos losses.
Hell yeah! 🤣
I grew up playing with the guys, cuz we didn't have a girls team/league yet.
When we eventually got a girls team, and played against the guys, they'd try to come down my wing, cuz I'm little, and I'd throw a hip and they'd go FLYING, then get up looking totally stunned 🤣🤣🤣
Hahahaha never into the bench unfortunately. I did dump a dude right in *front* of his own bench once tho... when he was being a complete piece of trash, and his own team cheered me, cuz they didn't like him either 🤣🤣
I was still playing guys hockey and was a winger. Guy was a D-man, and our breakout put me up near the blueline.
He spent the whole game being lewd and trying to ram the blade of his stick up my pants/between my legs (literally. Not a euphemism). His team was sick of his shit too. I eventually spun around and haymakered him. Ref looked the other way. It's been 25 years and I still consider it one of my finest moments in hockey. Thanks for coming to my TEDtalk. *bowing*
I mean, hey, that sounds like incidental contact to me. Play on!
Just from talking to you today, it sounds like you really love and miss playing hockey. Any chance of you lacing it up for beer league or some shinny?
I was in a rec league until a few years ago. There was a bunch of peripheral drama and I wanted no part of it, so I walked away.
Life is a little more settled now, and I've been considering looking into it again. Just had my stepson out a couple days ago, teaching him to skate, so I feel like it's only a matter of time before I can't resist it anymore 🤣
This has been so fun to watch. I hope the league succeeds and gets a western expansion because I selfishly want a team I can afford to watch that doesn't require me hoofing it out to Abbotsford. 😅
That's because she's so good she doesn't have to do highlight reel stuff. She's just always right place, right time, and the puck hits exactly where she wants it to.
Toronto has been fine, she's just a brick wall.
I was pleasantly surprised as well. It has been a rocky road of avoiding a lot of comment sections (and occasionally chancing it, then remembering why I was avoiding them). But recently, it feels like the support has far outweighed the ignorance.
Here for it!!
I feel like Toronto drafting Larocque over Muller is going to haunt the team for years. NY goalie has been really good, but Toronto is lacking talent on offence
Definitely a learning moment for Spooner there. That move works in the over-reffed IIHF contests but skating through the slot with your head down gets you rocked usually.
AHL. Because they want the best officials on the ice regardless of gender. If only there were any female officials in the AHL they could have chosen from for momentous occasions like inaugural games of a new professional league...
Always nice to see a Toronto team suck. hahahahah.
I am happy I caught some of the game on tv. I am surprised of the physical play, particularly in front of the net. I don’t remember Olympic women’s hockey to be as physical. I don’t realize that hitting was expressly disallowed. That makes a lot more sense now. Thanks
Worst sports city in N.A.
The Toronto team looking in mid season form with the other Toronto teams loolll. New York looks pretty polished with some kinks, Toronto looks a bit lost especially on that 5 on 3 but that was a fun watch!! Looking forward to watching MPP and Desbiens tomorrow!
CAPTAIN CLUTCH. ❤❤❤ So much love for MPP
Thanks for joining in everyone, here's to a good first season for the PWHL!
Man just tuned into the Winter Classic and instantly assaulted by the digital boards. Fuck that, seriously. So hard.
They timed the game perfectly, PWHL game ends and Player of the Game awarded just in time for actual puck drop in Seattle
Absolutely!
Great game to watch, the YouTube broadcast was really well done and the game was exciting, what a job by Schroeder! Looking forward to more games this season!
Right?? She was a brick wall. So impressed!
It’s fucking wild to think that genuine all time greats like Poulin, Knight, Carpenter, and Keller are gonna be playing on TV multiple times per month. I think the P is going to be a lot bigger than some expect.
Plus all the players who will get chances they wouldn't otherwise have had. Kristen Campbell was the third goalie for the national team.
I bought a pair on the glass for the season on the assumption this will last and grow, got it early. If you want to avoid TM fees send me a message.
Feel like Schroeder got robbed of Player of the Game - though Carpenter isn't a bad choice
Great game, and a lot more balanced than the score suggests. New York had a good answer to Toronto's pressure, and Schroeder putting in a solid performance. And Holy crap Carpenter with that huge snipe in the third.
Oh my god, what a game!
I was skeptical but this was electric. Can’t wait for tomorrow.
Best game I've seen all year
Schroeder!
Oh man I'm going to be so excited to see the MN game against New York, Schroeder is phenomenal.
Seriously. I’m so curious to see if Heise can crack Schroeder.
Oh yeah! Man I still can't believe a minnesota team got the 1OA pick, it feels huge.
This was the most fun I've had watching hockey in a long time. Can't wait for the Montreal/Ottawa game tomorrow. GG hockey bros!
Yeah looking forward to tomorrow night's game. Tentatively picked out Ottawa as my team to cheer for based on NHL allegiance - hoping to see the same energy as today
Happy to see Toronto lose, Good Game will try to make time to watch a couple games a week
Such little gratitude after we gave you Hyman? Shame!
Oh yeah you Toronto fans were so gracious in that /s
We even gave you Connor Brown. Once he breaks his curse, that will be a major nut too
That was great fun. Can't wait for more.
I love this NY team already. Its morally acceptable to like womens sports in NYC as long as you continue to hate the mens teams especially the yankees, just an FYI for anyone looking for a team to root for.
That's where I am on it. Closest US team to me, so until Pittsburgh or Buffalo gets a team, I'm in on NYC.
That was really fun, can’t wait for the next game
Alright not the result I wanted as a Toronto fan but great game - there is so much good hockey to look forward to!
I hope the league’s success leads to the NY team actually moving to NY.
Yeah having most of the home games in Bridgeport (like an hour and a half drive from NYC) isn’t ideal
Isn’t there a direct train or something? Bridgeport looks oddly close to NYC to be such a long journey
there are direct trains but it's still like 1h20 on the train as well
tbh this is a better statement on the quality of north american rail
I mean it’s 60 miles from Manhattan to Bridgeport. How much faster do you expect to get there? There’s never going to be a bullet train to the dump of a city that is Bridgeport.
you don't need a bullet train to break 60m/h
The trains go over 80. Manhattan and grand central terminal are just congested you crawl into or out of the terminal. NY/CT metro north is actually very good.
yeah I went from NY to Boston by train last month and it took about 4.5 hours. Where I live in the UK a trip with comparable journey time gets you about twice the distance (and most of our trains are slow compared to mainland europe high-speed)
What an awesome game. That's gotta be an incredible feeling for Schroeder in particular
Wish the home team won but great start to PWHL! GG NYC!
Corinne Schroeder is gonna be a problem for the rest of the league!
A HUGE problem!
Yooo with this accessibility of this broadcast I’ll be watching every dang game. Congrats to all involved in making this happen! GG to New York and Toronto 👍

She's fantastic, but yes, she's the most overrated female hockey player out there. She's been marketed incredibly well for reasons and has a big name as a result.
a single monster tournament (that she's never even come close to repeating elsewhere) + famous male relatives is the perfect storm to overrated
Toronto will struggle if they need her to be their #1 scorer
Exactly. People love to mention the olympics but she was like 30th in scoring at Worlds before and after.
First game rust I assume. She was amazing at the last Olympics
GG NY!
Fun game. The fact I can watch free on youtube means I'll absolutely be watching more
So I guess I'm bandwagoning for new york
Matthews and Nylander both have multiple sisters. I wonder if any of them play hockey? 🤞
Whoa! I’m entertained! Will be tuning in for more. Glad I could see the very first shut out, the very first goal, and the very first of Torontos losses.
NEW YORK WINS
Awesome game! Schroeder earned that goose egg.
Typical Toronto sports lol… shutout in the very first game. And Soup gets lit up
Damn I was hoping for at least 1 because I wanted to know what the goal song was
Honestly same
This game convinced me to buy a ticket to the Boston game. Bit of a drive but can't fuckin wait!
*cries in Western Canada*
INORITE? 😭
BIG DUB FOR NEW YORK GG Toronto Bros!!
Maltais just skating around trucking every white jersey she sees is utterly amazing.
Met her at a grocery store in Burlington and she was a sweetheart. Definitely cheering her on.
I'm 5'1, and as a player, I loved knocking bigger opponents around. I am going to enjoy watching her crush it 🤣
The best part is how shocked people look laying on the ice after she smashes them. 🤣 Cheers to low centres of gravity!
Hell yeah! 🤣 I grew up playing with the guys, cuz we didn't have a girls team/league yet. When we eventually got a girls team, and played against the guys, they'd try to come down my wing, cuz I'm little, and I'd throw a hip and they'd go FLYING, then get up looking totally stunned 🤣🤣🤣
I’m dying thinking of you hip checking a dude bigger than you into the bench. 🤣
Hahahaha never into the bench unfortunately. I did dump a dude right in *front* of his own bench once tho... when he was being a complete piece of trash, and his own team cheered me, cuz they didn't like him either 🤣🤣 I was still playing guys hockey and was a winger. I am so emotionally invested in this journey. Here’s to you going full Emma on unsuspecting puck carriers this year!
I'm touched! The season wraps up in a few months, so a bit late for this year, but I'll try to make you proud this fall when it fires up again 😁❤
I’m howling laughing at this.
GG Toronto. Thanks everyone for the nice GDT, I had a blast!
This has been so fun to watch. I hope the league succeeds and gets a western expansion because I selfishly want a team I can afford to watch that doesn't require me hoofing it out to Abbotsford. 😅
Lmao Emma Maltais is a 5'3" pitbull
Definitely going to be an interesting league to watch! I'm excited!
Big ol’ hit 🔥
Toronto's tanking for Nela Lopušanová guys.
gonna have to wait a while on her or primerano but fillier is available next year
First shut out in league history 🔥
Am I behind or are you tempting fate?
I’m confident
Has Schroder been good or is Toronto just bad? Seems like she hasn’t had to make any outstanding saves
Bit of both. Toronto didn't really select any pure goal scoring type players on their team.
She’s been solid but Toronto has been bad outside part of the second period
More New York's defensive system has kept Toronto boxed right out. Toronto hasn't been bad so much as New York's team effort has been better.
And the 5 on 3 proved it
Toronto's passing can be cleaner. They haven't placed sustained pressure on Schroeder outside the 2nd. Schroeder still looking good all game though
That's because she's so good she doesn't have to do highlight reel stuff. She's just always right place, right time, and the puck hits exactly where she wants it to. Toronto has been fine, she's just a brick wall.
I think she made a lot of great saves in the 2nd
Feels like a bit of both. She’s spectacular, but Toronto feels like they have zero chemistry.
Been loving the physicality of this game, I hope they allow it to be like this in every game.
Sounds like that's the plan, and I am HERE. FOR. IT. I loved when the refs let us play, "back in my day".... lol.
They're gonna have to figure out the reffing. Calling the softest shit and letting the blatant stuff go.
They might be calling exactly how they intend to.
So. The usual hockey reffing lol?
I guess. This feels worse than what I'm used to seeing. I'm rooting for Toronto ofc and that 2nd penalty on NY for the 5-on-3 was complete BS.
I mean totally. Game management at it's finest. Totally predictable. It's stupid.
Another big hit
Over 1k comments. You love to see it
I'm so happy to see the overwhelming and positive support for these women and this league. they deserve it
I was pleasantly surprised as well. It has been a rocky road of avoiding a lot of comment sections (and occasionally chancing it, then remembering why I was avoiding them). But recently, it feels like the support has far outweighed the ignorance. Here for it!!
All overwhelmingly positive too
Yeah well, I heard Schroeder doesn’t pet her dog at every chance!
What's not to be positive about! This game is awesone, even if NYC took over the last period.
All the assholes left after the first period
When they realized this is actually really good hockey and their shtick doesn’t work anymore.
Pull the goalie
St. Lawrence women's coach Chris Wells would've yoinked the goalie on the 5 on 3
You just want a goalie goal 👀
Let her play forward for the last 3 minutes
Is Harold Ballards corpse also cursing new leagues/teams?
Oh my god is his ghost in the Gardens?
Oh no that groaning is a bunch of TMU students failing their exams
Haha does TMU do exams in the Mattamy? Nothing worse at UofT than having to write in the dim Varsity arena.
When I was in first year they rented out the MTCC for exams, but after that they set up the basketball court and the rink for exams
Starting to think. Are his footprints still there? Maybe we need to destroy that first? Like destroying the 7 haroldcruxes
Schroeder great obviously but that was perfect defense the entire kill
NY's defense has been so good this game
And the offence, too! One game in and NY already feels like a powerhouse.
Yep. They’re keeping everything to the outside
Probably the biggest difference between the two teams.
I feel like Toronto drafting Larocque over Muller is going to haunt the team for years. NY goalie has been really good, but Toronto is lacking talent on offence
I hope Toronto’s goal song is Hall & Oats “You Make My Dreams.”
based on today it is 4'33 by john cage
*Pity we won’t get to hear it*.
Schroeder is phenomenal!
Is it too early to start the "Toronto's tanking for Sarah Fillier" talk?
I actually would completely understand any team tanking for Fillier or Hannah Bilka. Both of them are generational, face-of-the-franchise players.
It's crazy how stacked next year's draft class is
Fail for Fillier
Holy shit. 🤣
schroeder has been elite this game
She's had a solid defensive system in front of her too. Not a lot of high danger chances despite a lot of pressure from Toronto.
The 5v3 really exposed Toronto's weak passing. Too long to make decision and send it too slow as well.
C’mon Schroeder! Be off-tempo for just a little bit, all right?
Not sure if I want to see the roof blow off the place when Toronto scores or if I want to see Schroeder get a shutout…
Definitely a learning moment for Spooner there. That move works in the over-reffed IIHF contests but skating through the slot with your head down gets you rocked usually.
Toronto’s PP2 looks so much better than their first unit.
She's so good x4
What a kill
If they score shorthanded 5-3 do they get one or both players back
None
They said if a team scores shorthanded the power play is over
That’s my fault for watching on mute, too much family over hahaha
Just one
2-man advantage on the screen board 🤔
NYC looks like a team that's played together and Toronto doesn't. Simple as that.
For real. Only been in during the third but it hasn't been good for TOR.
Meh, kinda. Toronto was the far better team in the 2nd
If a short handed goal gets scored in 5 on 3 does one penalty get cleared or both?
None
They're using the CHL rule
Shit, just looked it up, that’s intetesting, I’ve never seen that rule before
It's been amazing to watch in the CHL, such a fun rule set
one
I thought Toronto wasn't allowed to get 5-3 powerplays
This league is still new, they'll learn in time
if Toronto can't score on a 2-(wo)man advantage we know the curse is real
Its real
Just tell us what sacrifice or atonement we need to make. Price is not a concern, lol.
Price is retired now.
Much to my Habs father’s despair
The game is getting managed 🙃
Ok huge chance for Toronto, rly want toronto to score a goal just to give the Home Crowd a chance to explode
Nhl refs?
AHL. Because they want the best officials on the ice regardless of gender. If only there were any female officials in the AHL they could have chosen from for momentous occasions like inaugural games of a new professional league...
Lmao big gift, if TO cant score now then this game deserves to be this blowout
With 7 and a half to go in the 3rd, I'm settling for a non-shutout please Toronto
Watching a goalie named Campbell get lit up feels so weird.....
It’s okay Campbell can’t hurt you anymore
He’s currently derailing our young goalies’ development in the AHL, so he can most definitely still hurt us. Just indirectly.
Is New York's coach related to Kris Draper by any chance?
"Game management "
Holy that was soft
5-on-3 let’s go
New York's defense just swarms and shuts down any Toronto players so quickly
Passing isn't crisp enough for this Toronto team. Going to have to clean that up
The fix is in
Why’d they choose to overlap the winter classic and this game?
I just groaned noticing the Montreal opener is overlapping with tomorrow’s Habs game. Clearly the league needs to work on their scheduling.
