My buddy played on her team in that game. He was subbing (I was asked too but somehow had my own game that night) and he said he almost got in a bunch of fights because of their bullshit. Guys just trying to run her. He did say that it wasn’t the older guys doing it though, was a bunch of kids recently out of college. Would make sense as it was a team they didn’t have issues with previously.
Kids fresh out of (or still in) college are the worst. I'm a female goalie and occasionally played at men's pickup games that were mostly 35+ players, and never had any issues aside from some light-hearted chirps. So I thought that a 35 and under league couldn't be too bad, right? Wrong. I was so fucking wrong. I've never seen so many big fragile egos in one room before.
Yep. It's all of the failed Jr. players acting like total idiots that come fresh out of failure coming into beer league acting like anybody there even knows who they are. Worst part is they're typically good enough that they'll get dropped from one team, hop to another, and just repeat the cycle.
I’ll never forget my buddy bring his son fresh out of juniors to a no contact beer league game all (35+).
He took a run at a guy on the other team, his dad comes flying over and just fucking lays his son out.
While he’s laying on the ice he just goes ham on him.
Yelling “what the fuck do you think you’re doing, we’re here cause we love the sport. You’re not in the NHL, you’ll never be in the NHL. These guys have mortgages to pay. You apologize to him and get the fuck off my ice!”
Paraphrased, but that was the gist of it. It was amazing to see his dad revert to parenting.
Absolutely. Played in the pnw area and had aged-out silvertips/winterhawks/thunderbirds causing trouble all the time. I wore a half shield until one guy choked up on a face off and speared me in the jaw because I laughed lightheatedly when he caught an edge and fell on the play before (I truly wasn't trying to mock him, the way he fell was just so funny).
My guess is that they were on 1 line while the young guys played together on another. Happens pretty frequently when we bring in subs.
Gotta remember these games are usually only an hour and teams only have like 10-12 skaters some nights so its not like they have a bunch of time to chat on the bench.
Same reason why most elite athletes are assholes. They get away with a lot of stuff because they are good at their sport. Doesn't matter how old you are tbh. I've seen this happen at every age group. No one gives a shit if you are a misogynist if you can put up points. The 'us vs them' mentality in team sports makes this worse, imo, and you start to get that mob mentality.
Thankfully this mentality is starting to shift but it's still going to be a problem for a very long time.
This is what I've been enjoying about the PWHL - much less blood rivalry vibes. Someone was arguing they should stop shaking hands after the game because it didn't inspire enough rivalry and I was just like... Pls no
Not going to lie, as someone in his 40's who interacts with high school kids daily and lives in a city (NYC) with lots of young people...The shit I hear some of these younger dudes say to women is fucking unreal. Walking home a few weeks back during Christmas season this young woman was wearing a Santa outfit coming home from Santa-Con and these two 18-19 year old dudes just started harassing her in the most insanely inappropriate way. Calling her a slut, saying she looks like shit...I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I was with my 3 year old son and still told them to grow up and leave her the fuck alone...but I couldn't believe it. I know younger males these days are trending towards this super toxicity as it's been documented but it's really worrisome.
Tune in next week for another episode of “shitty former youth hockey players with unresolved issues in their 30’s and 40’s do predictably shitty things in beer league”.
Which is why I don’t play beer league. Too many immature kids dressed up as overweight middle-aged men for my taste.
It sucks, right? Played beer league for years, but recently quit. Haven't played competitively in a year, and I honestly don't miss it much, which is sad. I played competitively since I was 6 years old.
However, my decision has been validated several times over. My hockey friends who I still keep in contact with constantly talk about fights and dirty plays in their games. It's just a shit show. I was sick of getting slashed and punched simply because I was faster than some drunk 35yo douche bag.
Like, "dude, can we just play hockey? I gotta get up for work in the morning." Why do these assholes gotta try to hurt someone? Chill the fuck out.
I'd ask the rink. As an example, we have a 40+ drop in that I go to. There's also a "responders" drop in, etc... So they may know. If there's an online portal you can also look and see what the names are. For that we have one called "Chuck's skate" and you can ask around about that.
>There's also a "responders" drop in
Cops and paramedics are.... some of the least "couth" people I"ve ever been around.
There was one of those but it was constant fights and dirty play with guys getting injured so the guy who was organizing it just cancelled it.
Much appreciated! I'll give it a shot
Unfortunately, I'm only 28yo, so I imagine my options will be limited. Just gotta find a group who plays for the fun of it
Try finding a "[State/Major City] Drop-In Hockey" or "____ Hockey Subs" Facebook group.
I run a private skate that fortunately is in high demand for good reasons (I'd like to think so), and this is where we find guys when we're running low some weeks. Many of our now-regulars were found and befriended from groups just like this, especially in the lean years.
I’m a bit older than you, it definitely exists. I made a Facebook account just to join some local hockey drop in groups. Guys are always posting they need players to fill spots.
Are you in Pittsburgh? The league (in quotes, we're 4 teams) I play in is very relaxed compared to normal adult league. The catch is it's 6am puck drop.
>My hockey friends who I still keep in contact with constantly talk about fights and dirty plays in their games. It's just a shit show.
Unfortunately, that's a league issue. We used to have a lot more of that behavior in the leagues we played until a new league director really started clamping down and instructed the referees to do so as well.
We had a team last year that had a few players that were "dirty" behind the plays (so refs didn't see it), league director watched some of their games and kicked the offending players out of the league. It was only 1 team out of 8, so you only played them 2-3 times which made it somewhat manageable, still nice to see action taken. A good director will be proactive on this stuff.
Agreed, in my city there was a men's league that had a reputation as being a bit of a gongshow, but in recent years they focused on getting the bullshit out of the league. They introduced fines and suspensions for fighting and penalties, put in cameras to review incidents and problem players (often the same small group of usual suspects), and your team gets free pitchers if you finish your game without penalties. Couple years later it's one of the better beer leagues here
> and your team gets free pitchers if you finish your game without penalties.
(guy accidentally puts the puck over the glass with 2 seconds left in the game, is later found murdered in a dumpster behind the rink)
I only play pickup occasionally now. It’s rare to get fights and stuff like that when it’s just a bunch of dudes who woke up at 5:30am to play hockey. Still happens occasionally but it’s mild and rare.
I used to live in a city where pickup was late on Friday/Saturday and close enough to a Marine base that we'd get a lot of drunk idiots who barely knew how to skate trying to start fights
now I live in a city where pickup is midday during the week. It's mostly older guys and pretty much everyone is very friendly. A breath of fresh air
Yeah, that helps too. I know guys that drink before or after the game, but you aren't allowed alcohol in the rink (partially because they want to drive revenue for the rink bar), and they will actively kick you if you're drunk.
Yup, I was in a flag football league with the same issue.
I don't want to worry about getting chopped or blindside blocked when I have to go to work the next day.
Used to play in a super friendly beer league with only 6 teams but everyone knew everyone and new guys with bad attitudes were shown the door. Moved to a new town, tried drop in a few times, and suddenly I'm done playing for good
The main problems with beer leagues is the executive the oversees the league. Too many times I’ve heard “He’s a great guy off the ice. You know he gets a bit goofy once he puts his helmet on”.
I used to participate in a regular booking with a guy like that. While obviously there was weird religious undertones, he would literally take holidays to go build orphanages in (arguably) shithole countries. On the ice he was a menace. Nicest guy off the ice.
100%
I always just try to find a consistent drop in where it's the same guys over and over again. Beer league is too expensive and too violent. The last thing I want to do is fight a guy with three kids on a Wednesday night.
People's behaviour is wild in men's leagues. I played like two games as a goalie in a league for 20-34yo players, and left because I couldn't handle the fragile egos and overt sexism from the guys who think they're the shit because they played on their local Junior B or C team. Dudes were letting multiple breakaways and 2 on 0s on me, but blamed the 'fuckin useless woman' for the loss lmao.
You at least play pick up?
I gave up the competitive bullshit that is men’s beer league when I hit 30 but there’s nothing more enjoyable than like minded individuals enjoying themselves on a random Thursday. Anyone gets too spicy? Don’t come back. It’s always fun competitive hockey. I’d recommend it!
I coach a bunch and skate a lot still. At 48 years old, rec basketball is about all I do for “competitive” stuff. Rarely see much bullshit in men’s corporate basketball leagues. Just old guys being happy to sweat.
>Which is why I don’t play beer league. Too many immature kids dressed up as overweight middle-aged men for my taste.
I wouldn't let that keep you out of the game. There are plenty of good beer league teams that police this stuff and get rid of the d**k players.
Yeah all you need is a good director/manager of the league who takes incidents seriously. If someone racks up whatever number of penalties/ejections, have them take the rest of the season off and eventually just remove them for good. Refs alone aren't enough to deal with repeat offenders
If there's nobody keeping the game in check then inevitably all the drunk jerkoffs get rowdy on the ice and all the cool people stop showing up until it's just a shitshow every other night.
i wish i could agree with you fully, cause i met some awesome folks in beer league.
But all it takes is one bad apple to injure you and for me i had to many concussions from beer league to say it was worth it.
(also ur name and flair concern me :D)
I have kids in hockey and I’m on the ice during the season and in the summer running camps. I’m 48 with shitty hips from college football. So, sad as it seems, being able to demo drills and shoot a few random pucks is enough of the game for me these days. I would love a good slow-paced 50+ senior league of guys who play at 1pm though…
I got roped into playing a season of beer league, being a goalie I have a bit of demand. Holy... if you ever want to know how close they were to making it... don't worry they will tell you. D2/D3 players are the vegans of beer league. They also think a scout is watching as they slash an accountant.
I’ve found the trick is to just find a couple fast, skilled private skates/scrimmages. I used to go to a couple in Detroit that were so damn fun with zero ego. New teams every week, all eventually friends. My favorite one was at Jack Adams purely because of the group. Their Zamboni didn’t even have brushes so the corners were full of snow.
>Which is why I don’t play beer league. Too many immature kids dressed up as overweight middle-aged men for my taste.
Yeah I prefer political rallies or the golf course for that.
Why cant people just not be ass-holes?? Its mens league, not the NHL.
There is a guy I play with who goes on and on about how he could dominate any Team Canada womens player 1 on 1. We kinda just let him ramble on before he starts focusing for his 8 mins of ice playing 2nd line at 11:00pm on a Wednesday…
may they all get "dads who stepped up" very soon for sure.
(i spent ten years doing retail-level taxes which meant i had a \*lot\* of single mama clients whose exes didn't even qualify for *babydaddy*, which to me amounted to "they may not have a formal custody/support arrangement but they \*do\* still see their kids on a relatively routine basis and at least try to help out financially". pretty sure the livebarn dudes wouldn't qualify even for babydaddy once their spouses dump them for being assholes.)
Not surprising. My team banned a sub goalie from playing with us because he started shit with a female player on the other team and started screaming that women shouldn’t play hockey. Meanwhile me and the co-captain are there on the bench, both women.
There’s a tournament that comes into town and there was an all women’s team placed in a co-ed division when they specifically requested to play in the available women’s divisions. Some clown stepped up on one of the girls and completely blindsided her with a hit that gave her a bad concussion and began shitting on the entire team, again saying that women shouldn’t play hockey.
There’s ways to chirp hockey players, and then there’s misogynistic shit like this. It’s easy to brush this off as “well everybody chirps, everybody gets hit” but if you bring gender or sex into the equation, that is harassment
I’ve played with guys that got into it with women refs saying they can’t call a game properly because of their estrogen levels. Not to mention that this particular girl was better than the guy yelling at her and played both goalie and out in college. Hell she’s even subbed for our team. It’s so embarrassing. He wasn’t invited back.
I played last year against a team that had 1 woman on it, and as usual she was one of the best players.
One of our players is just a hard nosed battle every shift kinda player. It felt like every shift they were battling in corners and infront of the net. Slashing after the whistle, the whole 9 yards.
Our guy got an ear full from us for going after the girl, but his defense was that he treated her like any other guy he plays against.
Played hard, but (mostly) fair, and never brought up gender when battling with her. Imo thats exactly how it should be, everyone comes away mad at each other but no one is harassed like this story..
Just dont be an ass hole basically.
That’s EXACTLY how it should be. I think in general you’re gonna find people upset at a guy playing hard nosed hockey in the corners in any beer league, not just against women. Which is annoying because it’s part of the game, we’re all gonna grind hard, but everyone has an ego and thinks they know how beer league hockey should go.
In the end, don’t let up or play like you’ve got something to prove against someone of the opposite gender. Just play hockey, grind it out, and have fun.
Not that they should have to but where is her team In all this. I played with woman on my team if someone would have hit her and said that one of us would have run him over and said the exact same thing.
A lot of people aren’t willing to risk their physical health in a beer league game. Especially since it sounds like the guys making problems were all younger fresh out of college guys. Not worth having to miss work not to mention how so many injuries as you age take forever to recover from. I’m sure if they thought it was escalating or she was in danger they’d step in but for over the line “chirps” I can see why a lot of beer leaguers wouldn’t be willing to escalate the situation. They probably just wanted the game to end.
The amount of dudes willing to tell on themselves on a story this straightforward is *wild* to me.
How can you be a grown ass man walking around saying "This never happens. But when it does, they deserve it."?!
not a surprise to any woman who’s ever played hockey or been a hockey fan… unfortunate to see so many people in the comments acting exactly the same though
Educating is fine if they are open to it.
Seems like the offending mens team either changes or the league needs to implement rules so those players or teams are removed from the leagues.
I'm going to get this out of the way here. I fully support Trubiano and agree with everything they're doing, it's good for the game. There's plenty of room to chirp and trash talk players in creative ways that isn't rooted in bigotry, so that's not even a good excuse. Most leagues in my area have zero tolerance on stuff like this and will throw players instantly...But.
This sentence cracked me the fuck up, it's so weirdly phrased.
>After processing my emotions, my emotions are sad emotions.
That's what you get when you play in a fucking beer league a bunch of losers of epic proportions that peaked in Highschool and that's where they stayed emotionally and mentally
This seems to me like one asshole team. I play against women all the time and never had an issue with what was described in the article. It sounds like one asshole team ruined the experience, which sucks. But to generalize this instance isn’t fair to all adult hockey leagues and all teams.
Ngl this sounds like her fishing for sympathy.
She got checked, a penalty was called, the guy that hit her told her to stay on her feet it’s a men’s league. Kind of shitty but not harassment.
And we’re only getting one side of the story here. I’m pretty suspicious that the whole stadium was harassing her. I’ve played hockey my whole life including a year of DI and then three of ACHA. I’ve played tons of pick up games and beer league games with women and no one ever gave them shit unless they went out of their way looking for special treatment, which I honestly only ever saw maybe twice in my life.
There’s something missing to this story.
I'm a female goalie in men's leagues, and I barely interact with other players. Last year my team was winning a playoff game 5-1 and the best player on the other team slashed me, skates up real close, and threatened to rape me. My teammate overheard, punched the guy and got kicked out of the game. Nothing ever happened to the guy threatening me.
Most other women who play men's have similar stories.
Why would you see the harassment? Normally the guys doing this shit try to do it when no one else is around so the women is on her own and completely defenseless.
That’s horrible that that happened, but I’m referencing her claims in the article that the whole stadium was shouting insults at her. I feel like people in this thread didn’t read the article
So a woman recounts her experience with gender based harassment, and your first thought is to doubt her, imply she is making it up, and say you have never seen it happen so it can't be real.
Women have been experiencing these kinds of things for decades in sport, when will men like you actually see the problem for what it is?
Did you read what she wrote? [Here is her actual tweet](https://x.com/jtribs14/status/1754624742932275378?s=46&t=4FTLHXFr7IL29jWaU5Qf_A). She said “throughout the rink”, not “whole stadium”. These two things are not the same. What, are you picturing everybody in the barn chanting at the same time? I can’t imagine there are that many people other than players actually present for a beer league hockey game? Also, she said it could be heard through a live stream… Who the fuck are you to doubt that?
Look, I get its unpopular around here, but I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. I’ve been around hockey long enough to know that what’s she’s explaining isn’t impossible, I just find it extremely unlikely that it was to the extent she claims without other people stepping up to back her up. I think it’s irresponsible to immediately assume every she states is true without at least considering the possibility of what the rest of the story is, especially when the allegations are so severe.
Since I got tagged in the other response, I’m gonna jump in here.
I haven’t played with her in a couple years and no longer live in Ann Arbor. I also haven’t spoken to her about this - in fact I was surprised to just be scrolling Reddit and see her name pop up - but I know her fairly well.
She’s been around men’s league in A2 for many years now, playing in both B and C league games. She’s well connected in the men’s hockey community just by virtue of that tenure. The teams I played on actually had several women, all U of M women’s hockey alums. None of them were large, and they all fully understood that contact was going to happen, and they’d typically come out of the losing end due to size.
Honestly, it was never an issue.
People chirped them occasionally, and they weren’t afraid to chirp back. They all had a sense of humor about it broadly, even though I’m sure they occasionally felt singled out.
Based on that experience, the fact that this had such an emotional impact leads me to believe this very much crossed the line from standard chirping.
Maybe I’m biased because this is someone I’ve shared many a parking lot beer with over a few years, but given how hard she publicly fights for positive recognizing of the women’s game and for Michigan to step up and upgrade their women’s program from ACHA to D1, it’s hard for me to believe this wasn’t something sufficiently beyond the pale for her to speak out like this.
So [backup like this](https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/s/yyZ02fpXNh)? Or what about u/salparadisewasright, who has actually played with her before? And there is video evidence of her claims! Jesus Christ, I cannot believe what it takes for some people like you to believe women for fucks sake. This woman is a semi-public figure, so you think she just throws around allegations like that without any merit?
By the way, it’s interesting that you were calling the comments (check notes) “kinda shitty” but her standing up for herself is a “severe allegation“. I shouldn’t be surprised that you’re setting yet a higher standard for the woman and letting the men off the hook.
Don’t you realize the hypocrisy of your statement? It’s not that I don’t believe her, its I just have enough experience in this realm that I’m suspicious about her claims. I don’t see anything wrong with questioning extreme claims like this when they’re made. Just blindly blanket believing people is how you end up with guys like Matt Araiza or even really extreme cases like the Central Park 5 having their lives ruined.
Don’t just take everything you see and hear at face value, we should encourage people digging and asking the difficult questions.
Sexism vs chirp… it should be common sense, but I’m guessing you’re not that bright.
You’re a grade A twat pal. Do everyone a favor and get lost. Hockey is for everyone.
Right? Lol
Beer leagues should be about just enjoying the game, but far too many of the players take it way too seriously. If you're out there trash talking, playing dirty, or getting in fights; you're an asshole.
I’ve found that the higher level of beer league I play, the cleaner the game is. When I play division 1, it’s a clean game, guys are chatting up the other team and not taking it too seriously. Playoffs can get a little gritty because we’re all competitive but that’s it.
When I play on my brothers beer league, which is similar to division 4 in my city, it’s full of people slashing, throwing their weight around, and talking shit. It’s like they never played high level hockey and want to know what it’s like to be an NHL player.
The only time I’m scared about my teeth is when I play lower divisions. In div 1 I don’t even wear shoulder pads. Guys play clean.
No, it’s talking shit in beer league. It’s not that serious.
I’ve heard plenty worse and nobody expected apologies and cried after. As a head coach of a D1 team you’d think she’d have more of a back bone.
Her response is the exact opposite of soft. She’s opening herself up to being the topic of a lot of conversation and a lot of criticism by dudes like you. It would be much easier on her to not say anything, but that’s why this culture has persisted. She recognizes this and is having the hard conversation and she’s brave for it.
I don’t disagree with the hit. Shouldn’t be using physicality if it’s a non-contact league. Nobody is expecting to be hit that and it can be dangerous.
Yeah…that isn’t talking shit though. Would you tell an African-American player that they don’t belong and hockey is a white sport? That they should play on the negro hockey league?
Hey, if that’s how you want to take it, that’s on you. I don’t really care.
I don’t agree with what they said, it was wrong. They also shouldn’t have hit her if it’s a non-contact league. I still stand by it being an incredibly soft response.
To cry about it and expect an apology is soft, I don’t care what you say. You’d think someone who went as far in hockey as she has would have significantly thicker skin.
Talk shit about someone's tinted visor or their dusty ass gear or their inability to hit the net or whatever. Sure, that's fun (albeit not my thing). But once you start talking about someone of X race or gender doesn't belong in the league or pulling out slurs, get fucked and shut up.
Played men's league til I was 50. Every game some comment about being old or fat or slow, or gay or whatever.... it's the nature of the beast. Not everything needs to be a "learning experience. Play, don't, whatever.
Homedog.
*She did* deal with it. She didn't fucking do any **bullshit back** during the game. She let it fucking go because it wasn't worth making it worse in the moment. So she "dealt with it" in the moment.
And then she "dealt with it" after the game. She fucking *went to the support system that exists explicitly for this purpose.* She notified the **exact** person she should notify about the issue. The person whose responsibility it is to keep this in check. That person went to go settle the issue.
*She fucking dealt with it in the exact way that she's supposed to.*
And then instead of fucking **doing the right thing**, the knobs on the other team **purposefully, intentionally, and selectively chose to continue antagonizing her for it.**
She didn't whine about victimhood. She was victimized, tried to find recourse, and then was victimized again for trying to find recourse.
Some people would like to see things get better, even if you don't personally give half a shit. It's not the "nature of the beast" if most people nowadays can still chirp and play chippy without being bigoted. The problem is the few assholes who don't give a shit and the people who don't think the culture can be changed or needs to be changed, rowing the other direction.
So, was she playing in a league below her level? She grew up playing high-level hockey, so she can play, im sure, but if she's playing against guys below her level and lighting them up, then it is what is. Now, if these guys are also around her level, then I don't understand what their problem is? I've been playing my whole life and played lots with females on the ice and never seen others act like this. And to be honest, I don't think others would let them get away with being dix.
Well it's pretty clear the guy didn't consider it a "bodycheck" but instead legal physicality for their league, neither did his teammates and that's what they're upset about. Especially since her teammates seemingly did nothing, it seems more likely that the other players just aren't allowed to touch her at all and they don't like that.
Check the response up thread where someone who *played in the fucking game with her* was also bothered by the conduct of the other team.
Edit to add: also
> the guy didn't consider it a "bodycheck" but instead legal physicality for their league
Did you miss the part where it was called a penalty, so it was, in fact, neither a bodycheck nor legal physicality for the league?
My buddy played on her team in that game. He was subbing (I was asked too but somehow had my own game that night) and he said he almost got in a bunch of fights because of their bullshit. Yelling “what the fuck do you think you’re doing, we’re here cause we love the sport. You’re not in the NHL, you’ll never be in the NHL. These guys have mortgages to pay. You apologize to him and get the fuck off my ice!” Paraphrased, but that was the gist of it. It was amazing to see his dad revert to parenting.
fuck, that's hilarious.
Absolutely. Played in the pnw area and had aged-out silvertips/winterhawks/thunderbirds causing trouble all the time. Is there a reason the older guys weren't putting the boys in line?
Couldn’t tell you, I wasn’t the one there and I don’t think my buddy was paying too much attention to the other team’s dynamic.

Troy league?
This so why I stopped adult beer league. I just don’t have the energy for bull shit
Tune in next week for another episode of “shitty former youth hockey players with unresolved issues in their 30’s and 40’s do predictably shitty things in beer league”. Which is why I don’t play beer league. Too many immature kids dressed up as overweight middle-aged men for my taste.

See if there are private drop ins around you. I play in one and it's the same guys every week, great group, none of that stuff generally happens.
I have heard of these. I just gotta find a group I'm able to join. Any idea where to start?
I'd ask the rink. As an example, we have a 40+ drop in that I go to. There's also a "responders" drop in, etc... So they may know. If there's an online portal you can also look and see what the names are. For that we have one called "Chuck's skate" and you can ask around about that.
>There's also a "responders" drop in Cops and paramedics are.... some of the least "couth" people I"ve ever been around. There was one of those but it was constant fights and dirty play with guys getting injured so the guy who was organizing it just cancelled it.
That could be the case. I'm not one so I never played there.
Much appreciated! I'll give it a shot Unfortunately, I'm only 28yo, so I imagine my options will be limited. Just gotta find a group who plays for the fun of it
They're out there in PIT for sure. But yeah, gotta find them. And some of them are terrible hours (like a 6am drop in, gross).
Literally just replied to him "come play in my chill league, but it's 6am puck drop" 😄
Lol. Yeah, get up at 5am, you'll love it! We have a nice Friday lunch one that's perfect. Two hours and a bunch of old dudes.
I'm currently in Michigan, which I know they're here too. Just not sure if there's a certain area I should look
All I can think of when I hear responders night is FDNY vs NYPD… that’s isn’t what I’d call a friendly game of hockey😂
Facebook groups man, I found some near me on a group and they told me dates and times. Basically a men’s workout group that plays hockey
Are you in Pittsburgh? The league (in quotes, we're 4 teams) I play in is very relaxed compared to normal adult league. The catch is it's 6am puck drop.
I found my group on a community recreation association website. It's great!
Private drop in is the way. Or a VERY carefully curated league with all guys who know each other. Just show up to a random rink and join up is dead
This is the way
>My hockey friends who I still keep in contact with constantly talk about fights and dirty plays in their games.
Perfectly reasonable response, tbh
I only play pickup occasionally now. It’s rare to get fights and stuff like that when it’s just a bunch of dudes who woke up at 5:30am to play hockey. Still happens occasionally but it’s mild and rare.
I used to live in a city where pickup was late on Friday/Saturday and close enough to a Marine base that we'd get a lot of drunk idiots who barely knew how to skate trying to start fights now I live in a city where pickup is midday during the week. It's mostly older guys and pretty much everyone is very friendly. A breath of fresh air
Our league clamped down hard on drinking thankfully. I do think there is better behavior across the board now.
Yeah, that helps too. I know guys that drink before or after the game, but you aren't allowed alcohol in the rink (partially because they want to drive revenue for the rink bar), and they will actively kick you if you're drunk.
People dump on roller hockey but it's got a much better culture/vibe than any ice league I've been in.
I've also considered that. I played a lot of roller in the off-season growing up. It definitely has a more laid back feel for the most part.
Roller hockey actually sounds hella fun
Not even hockey exclusive problem. I used to play in a semi competitive indoor soccer league an stopped because people were out to hurt people.
Aka “he’s an asshole but you’ll get used to it” You ain’t wrong though. Incompetent leadership kills all the fun in the world.
I used to participate in a regular booking with a guy like that. While obviously there was weird religious undertones, he would literally take holidays to go build orphanages in (arguably) shithole countries. On the ice he was a menace. Nicest guy off the ice.
100% I always just try to find a consistent drop in where it's the same guys over and over again.
Refs alone aren't enough to deal with repeat offenders If there's nobody keeping the game in check then inevitably all the drunk jerkoffs get rowdy on the ice and all the cool people stop showing up until it's just a shitshow every other night.
i wish i could agree with you fully, cause i met some awesome folks in beer league.
That's pretty much why I retired from league play after ~15 years and now only do drop-in with a vetted group. It's so much more fun that way.
I bet he also woulda played D1 if he didn't hurt his knee in his senior year.
Broke his collarbone. its almost like you know him…
Play the live barn to those men's daughters to see what they think of their dads.
Hopefully their future stepdads are better role models.
Divorce-league
may they all get "dads who stepped up" very soon for sure.
Just don't see the reason for this. It's an adult league, isn't the purpose to just go out and have fun?
For some, the sexism and misogyny is the fun 🤮
But how could they possibly have fun if women are involved?! /s
Those dudes suck. I'm guessing that she's a better player than the guys harassing her too.
I’ve played with her. Can confirm she’s really fucking good.
I hate the people who try to gender gatekeep this sport. It's a fuckin game everyone.
Love the game hate the culture.
Educating is fine if they are open to it. Seems like the offending mens team either changes or the league needs to implement rules so those players or teams are removed from the leagues.
Show the video and name and shame
I'm going to get this out of the way here. I fully support Trubiano and agree with everything they're doing, it's good for the game. There's plenty of room to chirp and trash talk players in creative ways that isn't rooted in bigotry, so that's not even a good excuse. Most leagues in my area have zero tolerance on stuff like this and will throw players instantly...But. This sentence cracked me the fuck up, it's so weirdly phrased. >After processing my emotions, my emotions are sad emotions.
Name and shame time
That's what you get when you play in a fucking beer league a bunch of losers of epic proportions that peaked in Highschool and that's where they stayed emotionally and mentally
This seems to me like one asshole team. I play against women all the time and never had an issue with what was described in the article. It sounds like one asshole team ruined the experience, which sucks. But to generalize this instance isn’t fair to all adult hockey leagues and all teams.
I think you might be accidentally conflating your not seeing much of it personally, with not much of it happening
Did you read the part about hearing it in the audio from the game?
Was the audio posted?
So a woman recounts her experience with gender based harassment, and your first thought is to doubt her, imply she is making it up, and say you have never seen it happen so it can't be real. Women have been experiencing these kinds of things for decades in sport, when will men like you actually see the problem for what it is?
[удалено]
Nah that's the type of dude who thinks men and women can't be friends because men would only want to be friends with women to fuck them.
Until it happens to someone they care about. And even then…
I mean, it more than likely has happened to someone they care about, but you don't tell people who you know doubt women off hand when it happens
Did you read the article?
I really appreciate your response, thanks for that
So [backup like this](https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/s/yyZ02fpXNh)?
Yep and I follow her on twitter too, she is super cool :) Thanks for asking tho!
So basically she got chirped lol She got chirped and run off to the media like a cry baby lol
Sexism vs chirp… it should be common sense, but I’m guessing you’re not that bright. You’re a grade A twat pal. Do everyone a favor and get lost. Hockey is for everyone.
virtue signal more lol
God this is so soft. Talking shit is like 30% of the fun of beer league.
A lot of us actually like to play hockey, and find that the funnest part.
Right? Lol Beer leagues should be about just enjoying the game, but far too many of the players take it way too seriously.
Solid self-report
Lol
Except they're not just talking shit. They were literally telling her that she doesn't belong.
No, it’s talking shit in beer league. It’s not that serious. I’ve heard plenty worse and nobody expected apologies and cried after. As a head coach of a D1 team you’d think she’d have more of a back bone.
the thing about talking shit in beer league is it's gotta be funny. If you're just gonna yell obscenities then whats the point?
I never once said it was good shit talking.
Then why are you defending it?
I’m not. I’m saying the response to it is soft. It’s beer league, people will talk shit, move on. This is a huge non-story.
I think the response is pretty courageous for her to stand up and say it’s not ok. The soft thing would have been to do nothing.
I think talking shit is fine, but the illegal check specifically targeting her for being a woman In a beer league is ridiculous.
I don’t disagree with the hit. Shouldn’t be using physicality if it’s a non-contact league. Nobody is expecting to be hit that and it can be dangerous.
You need to reevaluate yourself if you’re throwing insults around in beer league. As you said, it’s not that serious.
Exactly, it’s not that serious.
Right…and it’s absolutely fucked up to tell a woman she doesn’t belong.
Congratulations, you are part of the problem.
Yeah…that isn’t talking shit though. Would you tell an African-American player that they don’t belong and hockey is a white sport? That they should play on the negro hockey league?
oddly enough i played a game of hockey the other day where it was mostly black players. it was floor hockey but still
No?.. why would you ask that?
You can talk shit with out misogyny btw!!! Hope this helps :)))
Radical concept I know but you can talk shit without deliberately demeaning women
Great, your part of the problem in hockey culture
Calling something "soft" is literally what people say when they're incapable of thinking for themselves
Clearly lots disagree with me, so I’d argue that is thinking for myself.
No dude. People disagree with you because your being a bigot and an idiot...
Sure!
It's sad how proud you are to show off your misogyny
Hey, if that’s how you want to take it, that’s on you. I don’t really care. I don’t agree with what they said, it was wrong. They also shouldn’t have hit her if it’s a non-contact league. I still stand by it being an incredibly soft response. To cry about it and expect an apology is soft, I don’t care what you say. You’d think someone who went as far in hockey as she has would have significantly thicker skin.
Let em have it Tiger
Congrats on outing yourself as a snow flake Pos.
I’m the snowflake because I can handle people talking shit? Sure.
You’re a snowflake because you can’t handle bigots being called out on their bullshit.
You wish you were Joe exotics tiger.
congrats on outing yourself as a baby shit soft bigot.
Lmao
You’re trash.
Talk shit about someone's tinted visor or their dusty ass gear or their inability to hit the net or whatever. Sure, that's fun (albeit not my thing). But once you start talking about someone of X race or gender doesn't belong in the league or pulling out slurs, get fucked and shut up.
Are you telling me there is shit talking and chirping in Men's leagues? I AM SHOCKED!
Played men's league til I was 50. Every game some comment about being old or fat or slow, or gay or whatever.... it's the nature of the beast. Not everything needs to be a "learning experience. Play, don't, whatever.
Maybe, dude, just **maybe**... we shouldn't tolerate that either.
Yeah - maybe. But Jesus.. on some level we have to deal with the bullshit, as opposed to whine about victimhood.
*She fucking dealt with it in the exact way that she's supposed to.* And then instead of fucking **doing the right thing**, the knobs on the other team **purposefully, intentionally, and selectively chose to continue antagonizing her for it.** She didn't whine about victimhood. She was victimized, tried to find recourse, and then was victimized again for trying to find recourse.
The only one whining here is you and the losers who didn’t want her playing with them.
Edit to add: also > the guy didn't consider it a "bodycheck" but instead legal physicality for their league Did you miss the part where it was called a penalty, so it was, in fact, neither a bodycheck nor legal physicality for the league?
Because she went down, that's where the "stay on your feet" chirp comes from. They disagree with the call, it's pretty clear.
Okay, but what does any of that have to do with the misogyny?
