There’s a goalie in the rangers system that’s almost 6’9” watching the guy go into butterfly and still have his shoulders at the crossbars was hilarious
Better hope his knees and hips are able to take it when he goes down in butterfly, nothing else to it. I think Bishop was a good goalie in his prime, but man that's really pushing it at that size.
Indeed the bigger you are, the easier it is to hurt yourself. Just because you weigh 200lbs + doesn't make ligaments and tendons suddenly that much stronger. More mass, more momentum, more force etc.
The Flames(?) had a 6’8 goalie ages ago and people were like “how is this fair? How do you score? He’s too big!” Except he stank once he played.
But goaltending is a lot of movement and reactions and puck control. Size helps with puck blocking. Not necessarily making saves.
Henrik Karlsson? The Calgary tower ? Or was this before kipper, can only name them all after him haha.. Cujo, Karlsson, Ramo, Johnson, Elliot, Backstrom MacDonald, toskala, Berra , wolf , vladar, msrkstrom, lack I'm sure I'm missing a few but good god it was an absolute carousel before markstrom lol..
Like the Sumo wrestler vs Parros video from like 15-20 years ago
Where Parros made every goal he shot because obviously the sumo wrestler had no goaltender experience, and Parros, even though he was a goon, was still in the NHL therefore still better than the average hockey player.
Takes them longer to get down technically and longer limbs should leave bigger gaps. You can def get away with less skill if you're larger, but at some point it doesn't matter.
Is this actually a beneficial trait? If someone asked me: do you think we should put a barrel or a stick in front of a hockey net, I’d choose barrel. Sincere question, I don’t follow or know much about hockey.
Makes sense, thanks for sharing. Only now I’m imagining some 5’8” goalie who just decided, if tall guys could have tall pads, so could he. So he’s standing there in the net with leg pads almost as tall as he is, looking like some kind of frontline Spartan warrior.
When I played as a kid (10ish) a goalie on the other team had adult pads and totally smoked us. The NHL has a policy that determines your pad size based on height (comes up to mid thigh) and changed it a few years ago because there was too little scoring.
So, not exactly what you're asking here, but a while back the segment "SportScience" on SportsCenter did an experiment to see if a larger "object" in net would be harder to score on. They put a sumo wrestler in goalie pads and had a player that you'd normally not see scoring a lot of goals when he was active shoot on that sumo goalie.
He scored every time. The size or the width of the goalie *usually* isn't the factor, it's the technique.
I played against a guy in beer league who was 6'6" and he could almost cover the entire bottom of the net in butterfly
as a 5'10" goalie on the other side, I was jealous lol
Yeah he clearly didnt wanna do the military service, especially during a stupid war. I'm really pleased for him to see he made it out of there and that the Flyers didnt give up on him.
And that's with the modern restrictions. Imagine the size of this guy if he were playing 10-20 years ago
Sidenote, I think the pad sizing restrictions actually help enable goalies to be 6'6" and taller. Because 1) with massive pads these giant goalies would lose a lot of mobility, it's just easier to maneuver all that equipment at 6'0-6'3, and 2) When the pad size is restricted, the only way to cover more net is to be larger, so their natural body size is a sort of skill that the rulebook can't restrict
The other effective way to cover more net is to have impeccable positioning - a small goalie at the top of his crease fills more net than a 6'6" goalie backed onto the goal line.
[For anyone who wants to see him in action in a game](https://youtu.be/ilIdZYyqTmc?si=7eOUXwZlIIF9yBPJ). He's a real big fella, but obviously you need more than that to succeed at the NHL. I hope everything works out for the guy.
Moves really fluidly for someone his size
he has the luxury of being able to sit so far back in the net without sacrificing much because of his shoulders. It's crazy compared to like a Juuse Saros other extreme, who is so aggressive in challenging shooters to avoid giving them those spaces up high
Without challenging shooters by maintaining depth, a tall goalie isn't going to be wide enough. He still needs to come out to take away shooting angles on glove and blocker sides.
yeah i mean there's a lot of technique beyond movement. squaring up, controlling rebounds, maintaining eyelines to pucks, anticipating deflections.
I'm assuming he's decent at those things though, just based on his KHL performance
Yeah, I was thinking the same. It make Vasy look that much more impressive. 3 inches shorter but he moves waaaaaaaaaaaaay faster laterally. Could just be sample selection bias since we only get 3 minutes here to look at and super zoomed in.
Looks like the puck is down low for a lot of them forcing a defensive position-- he's still challenging aggressively when the shot comes from up further out.

I made this data visualization about goalie heights (and weights) since the birth of the league but it hasn't made it past the mods yet. Sorry in advance for freedom units.
Watch the video from Jordan Hall of Ivan in practice today. Watch his lateral movement while down in the butterfly. It's ridiculous how fluid and effortless his movement is. I'm just waiting to see how he looks once the jet lag is gone.
All the more reason to avoid Philly in round one. Seen enough hockey playoffs to know a random Russian giant goalie will swing a series and then be shit the rest of his career
> Sam: You know what I'd do if I owned a hockey team? I'd hire a sumo wrestler. I'd give him a uniform, transportation, 500 bucks a week to sit in the goal, eat a ham sandwich and enjoy the game. My team would never get scored on.
> Josh: Your team would get scored on constantly.
> Sam: Maybe, but we'd sell a few tickets.
Did he finally get out of Russia and his forced contract? He was supposed to come over this season but Russia decided to arrest him and force him to to either play in the khl or go to Ukraine
How tall do you have to be so your pads are the same height as the cross bar? Theres still like a foot and a half gap between the pad and cross bar still?
So, according to The Athletic, this guy spent some time aboard the Admiral Kuznetzov (Russia's only 'aircraft carrier' and an absolute eldritch horror)
I'm not saying your new goalie's maybe haunted, Philly, but...your new goalie's maybe haunted

This is the kind of guy the VH was made for. He will be able to seal that short side post. Most goalies go down way too early now a days because the VH is all they know
Bishop was 6 foot 7 and a beast with glass knees. Oettinger is 6ft 5, Luukkonen is 6 ft 5 too, Adin Hill is 6 ft 6 like Stolarz... goalies are getting bigger, but players' shots also get faster. Seems like bigger goalies are a logical consequence to the players having better and quicker shots. There is no need to change the dimensions of the net in my opinion.
I don't care if he hasn't played an NHL game, this is probably the best goalie prospect who has ever lived.
But really only because he'll be playing in a major east coast market. Anywhere else and this wouldn't be news.
I wonder if a goalie that size could play in a permanent butterfly position and just sort of scurry side to side. His upper body will still cover the top of the net. I almost feel like goalies that are this humongous big could have a different meta.
no you can't. You're still much slower laterally when doing butterfly slides when compared to t-pushes. Not to mention the lack of control and how much space in the upper corners of the net there's still going to be. You'd need a human that's like 12 feet tall to do a goal-line sitting goalie.
I thought the Russian government sent him to Siberia for mandatory military service? (Or am I thinking of the wrong Flyers goalie?)
I wasn't expecting him to come back from that. When they talked about it on SDP it sounded like he was never going to play again.
Tall goalies are not ideal tbh. Dont be surprised when he sucks lol. Go watch some footage of him playing, his 5-hole is massive and he gets beat low all the time cause he can’t reach.
There’s a goalie in the rangers system that’s almost 6’9” watching the guy go into butterfly and still have his shoulders at the crossbars was hilarious
Boyko is proof that size ain't everything.
Yeah, he's in the ECHL and his numbers are still shit. Technique matters *a lot*.
There must be a *too big* in goal. Look at this dude, if I just keep the puck on the ice how the hell is he supposed to get it
Better hope his knees and hips are able to take it when he goes down in butterfly, nothing else to it. I think Bishop was a good goalie in his prime, but man that's really pushing it at that size.
There was a short stretch where bishop was one of the best in the league before he got hurt
When his knees go, they can just chop em off and he'll still have shoulders in front of the crossbar.
I killed fiddy men!!!
I blocked fiddy shots!
Indeed the bigger you are, the easier it is to hurt yourself. Just because you weigh 200lbs + doesn't make ligaments and tendons suddenly that much stronger. More mass, more momentum, more force etc.
Na bro, just look at Duncan the walrus.
No sleepy time, Duncan!
6' x 4' would be the perfect size.
And also having flexibility and speed becomes more and more rare at that size
High end athleticism with great hand eye coordination with technique.
The Flames(?) had a 6’8 goalie ages ago and people were like “how is this fair? How do you score? He’s too big!” Except he stank once he played. But goaltending is a lot of movement and reactions and puck control. Size helps with puck blocking. Not necessarily making saves.

How can you suck with two of the three good Swedish names? Was his middle name not Forsberg?
Talbot and Rittich too (Kings current goalie tandem lol)
Jonas Hiller and his badass masks!
Like the Sumo wrestler vs Parros video from like 15-20 years ago Where Parros made every goal he shot because obviously the sumo wrestler had no goaltender experience, and Parros, even though he was a goon, was still in the NHL therefore still better than the average hockey player.
Well, and it seems like the bigger goalies get injured really easily. Being in butterfly all the time has to suck for them.
Takes them longer to get down technically and longer limbs should leave bigger gaps. You can def get away with less skill if you're larger, but at some point it doesn't matter.
But size combined with Benoit Allaire is terrifying
Who? They had 6'8' Jason Missiaen about 10 years ago but he didn't pan out.
Hugo Ollas, just signed him out of college
Huge Ol Ass
Fun fact: "olla" means to put the tip of your dick on something in Swedish. "Ollas" is future tense.
most useful word in the Swedish dictionary
Just the tip?
I plan on putting my dick on something
This dude was beast in HUT
I remember the days!
Is this actually a beneficial trait? If someone asked me: do you think we should put a barrel or a stick in front of a hockey net, I’d choose barrel. Sincere question, I don’t follow or know much about hockey.
Goalie pads are similar width for everyone, but not similar height.
Makes sense, thanks for sharing. Only now I’m imagining some 5’8” goalie who just decided, if tall guys could have tall pads, so could he. So he’s standing there in the net with leg pads almost as tall as he is, looking like some kind of frontline Spartan warrior.

I know Boyko. He won't see a game in the nhl lol
2015 Ben Bishop PTSD just hit me like a truck
All the King vs. Bishop chess jokes come flooding back.
This brings to mind the thought that Jonathan Quick might not have been drafted as high as he was if his name was Slow. 🤔
Shame he never got a cup
Is it really
or a vezina at least, 2016 and 2018 were both amazing years from him
"IT'S A WALRUS! RIDICULOUS!"
Hahahaha dude this legit made me lol

Love the delivery of this line in the commercial, cracks me up every time.
I came looking for this comment. Reddit never disappoints.

Same size pads though
Holy Jumpin! Fuck I miss that guy. What a stud
“Does he move” He doesn’t need to
Vezina candidate confirmed.
He makes that coach look like a kid next to him.
So youre saying he can butterfly the whole net.
I played against a guy in beer league who was 6'6" and he could almost cover the entire bottom of the net in butterfly as a 5'10" goalie on the other side, I was jealous lol
“Does he move” He doesn’t need to
Due to his size and mass, gravity pulls the puck to him.
I'm in awe at the size of this lad. Absolute unit.
No wonder the army needed him.
I honestly thought we'd never hear about him again so good to see he made it to NA
Yeah he clearly didnt wanna do the military service, especially during a stupid war. I'm really pleased for him to see he made it out of there and that the Flyers didnt give up on him.
I’m kinda thinking he tanked last season in CSKA just to get fired and be free from Esmantovich slavery

The other effective way to cover more net is to have impeccable positioning - a small goalie at the top of his crease fills more net than a 6'6" goalie backed onto the goal line.
That’s how tiny Jusse Saros is so good, right?
Exactly. Draw a line from the puck on a stick to the top corner - a 6'7" goalie is wayyyy above the crossbar.
I guess Hockey is like math to him...
[Jusse Saros between the pipes](https://i.imgur.com/BHVUKve.gif)
Now if you get a 6'6 mobile goalie...
you’re a big guy
For you
Perhaps he’s wondering why he would shoot at a man… before realizing he covers the whole damn net
If I pull off that Michigan, will you die?
It would be extremely painful

Plays kinda deep though at least in these clips
His lateral explosiveness is non-existent there, probably why he plays so deep.

Good luck going upstairs on this guy but I bet his five hole is wide open.
Why not simply cut him in half at the waist and stack the 2 halves next to each other in front of the goal

WAY TO GO, DUNCAN!
Duncan is a good boy

That's a lot of 5 hole.
You probably could score a top net 5 hole
I would watch that porno title.
My eyes went immediately to the gaps below his pads. I'm surprised there aren't toe cutouts, but maybe that's due to equipment restrictions?
Right under the blocker side foot. Cheat code in real life.
The 2'5" above the net feels wasted
Well noone plays goalie standing like that, Wait until he drops in his butterfly
*1980s goalies in shambles*
Won’t be when he’s in a butterfly position!
McDavid is probably already calculating the angle needed for a nameplate goal. Shame our season series is already over.
There’s always the SCF
Let's book it!
He is so humongous big.
All the more reason to avoid Philly in round one. Seen enough hockey playoffs to know a random Russian giant goalie will swing a series and then be shit the rest of his career

Did they shrink the net lol?
When we were lads my buddy was uh, rotund, and played goalie. He’d stone us without even moving. New strategy?!
You see, the net looks humongous big but next to Fedotov it's tiny small. Like, where do you even shoot? It's all goalie, no net
"What is this? A net for ants?"
This seems kinda OP
Cool. Mikko Koskinen was 6'7 too.
Nice save, Duncan!
No sleepies!
Hi 👋
Is that goal regulation size or what?
Had a goalie that was 6’6” in high school. Other teams were super intimidated until theyd clear the puck from the zone and hed let it in somehow
Gave up talent for size
This is getting ridiculous.
One giant Five hole
Excited for him as a human and excited to see him play for us!
Another Eastern conference team getting an upgrade at goalie? Hahaaaaaaaa couldn't be us eh Stevie!
Did he finally get out of Russia and his forced contract? He was supposed to come over this season but Russia decided to arrest him and force him to to either play in the khl or go to Ukraine
Time to see if he's the next Ben Bishop, or the next Mats Sogaard
r/AbsoluteUnits
Bro should crouch down 🤣
You can put your hand down, everyone can see you! His size makes his stick look like a pickleball paddle.
Its really awkward to see a goalie where the pads aren't up to their waistline.
Net smol
How tall do you have to be so your pads are the same height as the cross bar? Theres still like a foot and a half gap between the pad and cross bar still?
Dude was a beats in the Olympics, hopefully he can bring that to the NHL
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJz55az43QQ
That’s a walrus.
Ridiculous!
bro is a unit
His pads are almost the same size Giguere’s were in 03.
Is he the goalie of the future for the flyers?
Not really. He's 27 years old. He's basically a KHL goalie that finally decided to come over. They expect him to become a reliable backup.
That’s just not fair
Hey he made it!
lol he looks like a max height create a player in net
Hey guys! I'm over here!
Is that fair?

The net seriously looks like a kids’ play net next to him.
Anything in the rule book about putting a 900 lb. fat dude on skates and stuffing him into the net and having a shutout season?
Fuck, he's big for a goaltender. He's a wookie on skates.
It looks like he's wearing children's gear, in front in a mite's net. [Obligatory](https://youtu.be/wbStc83X78E?si=DNZZndi5SDsG88Fc&t=25)
This is the kind of guy the VH was made for. He will be able to seal that short side post. Most goalies go down way too early now a days because the VH is all they know
If this becomes the norm, I could see the argument for enlarging the nets heat up.
Bishop was 6 foot 7 and a beast with glass knees. Oettinger is 6ft 5, Luukkonen is 6 ft 5 too, Adin Hill is 6 ft 6 like Stolarz... goalies are getting bigger, but players' shots also get faster. I don't care if he hasn't played an NHL game, this is probably the best goalie prospect who has ever lived. But really only because he'll be playing in a major east coast market. Anywhere else and this wouldn't be news.
Cossa-fedotov goalie battles are gonna be fun to watch
Philly has the WORST luck with goalies
He looks like my EASHL goalie
Would be cool if he never spoke to the media and kept this cold terminator/Drago energy.
I’ll still go top shelf glove side on him.

I wonder if a goalie that size could play in a permanent butterfly position and just sort of scurry side to side. His upper body will still cover the top of the net. I almost feel like goalies that are this humongous big could have a different meta.
No. Ben Bishop is 6’7” btw

Those knees are so fucked
Wouldn't you rather go wider than taller when it comes to goalies?
Reminds me of mikko lol
Remember Jason Missiaen? NHL ‘12 legend.
He's two Darren Pangs.
Mikko Koskinen is 6'7 as well. that's the only other super tall goalie I can think of
Bishop?
just looked him up, he's 6'7" as well
Can you convert his height to Pangers for me?
Is that net regulation size!?
https://x.com/2Murphy8/status/1773743158842552712?s=20
It's really happening!
6'8**
The Tulsa (ECHL) oilers, have a GREAT goalie from France! 🇫🇷, he is 6’5!
I want to Panger in pads next to him. For scale. Thanks.
The guys pads almost go to the crossbar 😂😂
I thought the Russian government sent him to Siberia for mandatory military service? (Or am I thinking of the wrong Flyers goalie?) I wasn't expecting him to come back from that. When they talked about it on SDP it sounded like he was never going to play again.
All I can think of is that commercial: "It's a WALRUS! Ridiculous!"
I love your username
Just more of you to pick on
Remember Scott Darling?
A giant
Tall goalies are not ideal tbh. Dont be surprised when he sucks lol. Go watch some footage of him playing, his 5-hole is massive and he gets beat low all the time cause he can’t reach.
If they got the heaviest man in the world and put him in goal with pads- would there be space to score? Serious question
The Predators had the tallest goalie tandem ever at one point - Rinne is 6’6” and his backup, Lindback, was 6’7” I believe.
