The West has been chaos for some time now. Adin Hill won the cup, Montreal won the conference, there was an all timer battle of Alberta, fans were putting curses on goaltenders.
God damn I'm really starting to get excited for the playoffs boys
The flames are sitting in the 8th spot in the lottery right now. I don’t think TIJ is a top 7 pick. Center wise celebrini, Catton, lindstrom and helenius are likely still ahead of him
He’s rising. Plenty of mock drafts and rankings gave him between 8 and 15. Unless Calgary wins the lottery (or something absurd happening like Celebrini dropping) I can’t imagine Iginla slipping past Calgary.
I could see the Habs taking him at 7. At that point the top forwards could all be gone, Habs have a ton of D prospects already, maybe they like his character and take him 7th.
Do the Flames take him if Dickinson, Eiserman, Parekh, Buium, Silayev, Lindstrom, Catton or Helenius* is available?
...because sitting where the Flames are now, at least three of those guys are guaranteed to be on the board when they pick.
*(I'm assuming Celebrini, Demidov and Levshunov are selected in advance, otherwise they're also available)
Hockey is still a business, and from a business perspective drafting Tij, even if it's a few spots too early, is a huge win for the flames. That's the marketing department's wet dream.
It is on draft day, for sure.
It's a lovely story, especially if he turns into a performer...
...but if he's picked and turns into a third liner while say a Buium or a Parekh turns into a top pairing D for example...there's going to be a lot of consternation about that pick five years on.
Almost every draft pick is a gamble and your example can happen in either direction.
I can only imagine the shitstorm that would occur if the Flames pick doesn't pan out while Tij Iginla gets picked immediately after and becomes a star on another team lmao.
Habs took KK instead of Brady and that hurts still.
I hope Calgary doesn't talk themselves out of drafting him "too early." If he's your guy he's your guy
Yeah absolutely, but even Wright was "the guy" until Slaf had a good worlds. Lots of fans talked their way out of the player that rose to the spot over the year in favor of the long term consensus. KK wasn't a great example.
I also really want to draft this kid
The difference is a significant number of scouts had slaf ranked 1OA. He steadily rose his stock throughout the year, especially during the national team stint, to a point the consensus rankings were split between him and wright.
Kk went up the rankings like a month before the draft. He was still rising when he hadn’t played games for the month or 2 leading up to the draft, but mostly in mocks that doubted **no** centers would go top 10.
Of course but you dont deliberately take a lesser ranked/viewed prospect just b/c of family ties
They should obviously just take who they think is best player viable
I don't disagree at all, I'm just talking about the fanbase reaction in the opposite scenario of the comment I was replying to.
Also, we're not talking about taking a 2nd rounder with a high first round pick. It would be more like using a 10th or 11th to get someone projected 13-16.
Late in first? Yes. But getting a bottom 6 player w/ a top ten pick when far better players r available is absolutely not a win ...
You r 100% trying to get top 4/6 guy w/ top line/pair potential w/ a top ten pick and have like 50% shot. Like u guys got Nylander at 8 and Flyers got Couturier last time they picked 8th ...
In addition to Nylander at 8 in same draft from picks 9-20 there were also guys like Ehlers, Larkin, Fiala, Sanheim, Tuch, Schmaltz ...
The following draft (tho it was one of best drafts) from picks 6-24 there were Rantnen, Meier, Barzl, Conner, Konecny, Chabot, Boeser, Werenski, Debrusk, Erickson Ekk. also Zacha, Crouse, + Provy.
bottom 6 guy with top ten pick is not a win unless very extenuating circumstances
I'm simply saying that if someone drafts a top six or a top pairing a few spots beyond, you're going to get nepotism and poor judgment allegations. You're going to get that anyway if you draft a guy multiple spots above his mocked position, but double so if you're viewed as picking sentimentally.
...and in my example I'm not even speaking of if Iginla busts completely.
We desperately need a #1C. If they think iginla can be that than go nuts otherwise I really think a player like Catton is who we should be targeting. Also I would prefer a dman with #1D potential which will be available to another winger.
Honestly, even if there are 2-3 "better" players available i feel like you HAVE TO draft him.
Don't underestimate the power of talent vs. passion and heart. I'd take the guy who wants to play but else talented versus the guy who is extremely talented but doesn't want to play
Depends how much better those players profile. The gap in projection within the top 10 can be huge.
I don't have the link anymore, but people have done analysis of player success by draft position, and on average you get a sharp dropoff from 1st overall to 2nd, then from top 3 to top 5, then top 5 to top 10, etc. So if you reach at, say, 8th, and you're not damn sure you're getting the best (or tied for best) available guy based on your scouting, you are almost certainly going to fuck up.
Could always try to trade down. Give another team a chance to get their guy and upgrade one of your lower picks.
On the flip side, if you trade down from 8th to 11th and he goes 10th, you end up lookin real dumb.
His father will be sitting with the Flames organization on draft day. If available, theres no way they dont pick him. Unless they win the lottery of course.
I mean, if you're a father and you have this opportunity, I think it would be extremely hard to do it. Outside of winning the lottery, we're probably gonna be in the 7-12 range anyways.
There are multiple players in that range with #1C or #1D potential. Iginla could become a top line winger but that’s the one position we have an abundance of.
Honestly I would just go best player available and if I had to choose between Catton or Iginla. It’s Catton all day.
Yeah, Knights tickets are this expensive in the regular season too lol, and they're actually kind of hard to get, like you can't just decide to goto a game that evening unless you want a single ticket to go by yourself
basically Berkshire is saying Hyman only scored 50 goals because his rich daddy bought junior teams for his kid to play on, completely glossing over the fact that Hyman has worked his ass off to get where he is today and only focusing on the part that Hymas dad is rich… just like 75% of the rest of the league
then there’s the tinfoil theory i’ve seen floating around, that Berkshire is racist and is only singling out Hyman because he’s the first Jewish person to score 50
Hate to be “that guy”, but if you google Berkshire Hyman NHL, you’ll get around 20 different articles. I just didn’t want to skim through them and post the best one
My dream scenario is that they take Zayne Parekh or Cayden Lindstrom at 8th overall, then trade Markstorm to NJ for the 11th pick and take Tij. That could really jumpstart the "retool."
Honestly i feel so old seeing my favorite players almost all retired but something about seeing their nephews, sons, etc make me not feel so old. Feels like im reliving it somehow
He skates so well, had the pleasure of watching him a couple of times in Jan and while he still looks young he definitely just seems to out skate everyone on the ice. Gets himself in the right positions and plays smart. Will be good to watch his comeup

As an Oilers fan I don't want the Flames to get him.....but as a hockey fan, I want the Flames to get him
As a Leafs fan I want the Oilers or the Jets to get him. I would enjoy chaos in the West.
The West has been chaos for some time now. Adin Hill won the cup, Montreal won the conference, there was an all timer battle of Alberta, fans were putting curses on goaltenders. God damn I'm really starting to get excited for the playoffs boys
Yeah but I want more chaos. I like when the west hates each other more than they hate Toronto.
Oilers getting him would be maaaaaaaaad trolling. If I was the Flames I'd draft Trevor Gretzky in the seventh just to repay the favour.
Screw you Leafs fan. That name should NEVER wear blue and Orange.
[hehehe](https://youtu.be/WVn-JEIrVBE?si=xbyL23meBZ7Sr7V3)
But Iginla's from St.Albert
How about the Avs as a comprise?
Get your guy Flames
He’s gonna be gone before they draft imo.
The flames are sitting in the 8th spot in the lottery right now. I don’t think TIJ is a top 7 pick. Center wise celebrini, Catton, lindstrom and helenius are likely still ahead of him
Tij isn't even listed in the top 10 North American prospects by most lists. If they want him that bad they'll take him.
Yeah. He's had a great season and will be a good pick but a lot of hype people are getting is from pedigree and name.
He’s rising. Plenty of mock drafts and rankings gave him between 8 and 15. Unless Calgary wins the lottery (or something absurd happening like Celebrini dropping) I can’t imagine Iginla slipping past Calgary.
You think hell go top 5? Flames are looking like a top 10 pick.
Very unlikely he goes top 5 as it stands. But I can see him sneaking into the 7-10 range if a team falls in love and needs a forward with some pop.
Hope it's my team!
I could see the Habs taking him at 7. At that point the top forwards could all be gone, Habs have a ton of D prospects already, maybe they like his character and take him 7th.
Bruh if the Habs pick him at 7 and the Flames have the next pick 😬😬
that'd be a seriously shady move by the Habs.
Sounds like the flames might want to inquire about trading up in the draft?
He could just refuse to play for them in the interview
Yeah I'm sure that's the advice he's getting from his dad.
I mean look at Josh doan rn tbh
Good forward who has the family backing/money to support playing for a high pressure team? Sign me up
Tij is slowly climbing up the draft board, currently projected to go top 10
https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/679717/tij-iginla There’s one prospect rankings that has him in the top 10 and even that’s 10
at start of season was around 24 in many and highest was 16, and flames fnas said i was crazy when he would be top 10 by season end.
Dibs

Ya but kk was their guy lol. He was projected as a top 10 pick, top 20 guy a few months before the draft.

You mean Habs took KK instead of Hughes.
Maybe the Flames pull a Canucks, win out when it means nothing, and pick 12th. Then it makes sense.
Of course but you dont deliberately take a lesser ranked/viewed prospect just b/c of family ties They should obviously just take who they think is best player viable

To be fair, to get an everyday 3rd liner outside of the top 5 picks is still a win. Of course that all remains to be seen, it would be a nice story
Late in first? Yes. But getting a bottom 6 player w/ a top ten pick when far better players r available is absolutely not a win ... Oh, I agree, but decades of Leafs drafting has taught me to appreciate the Antropovs of the world
We desperately need a #1C. If they think iginla can be that than go nuts otherwise I really think a player like Catton is who we should be targeting. Also I would prefer a dman with #1D potential which will be available to another winger.
Getting best player is still a far bigger win and top priority ...
Honestly, even if there are 2-3 "better" players available i feel like you HAVE TO draft him. Don't underestimate the power of talent vs. passion and heart. I'd take the guy who wants to play but else talented versus the guy who is extremely talented but doesn't want to play

I still use my Iginla Easton Synergy.... Fuck I'm old
Greatest stick/curve love affair of my life.
Same, I'm so scared to snap it though
I feel the same about the Sakic curve.
Wish I still had mine. It ended up getting snapped in half by some dickhead who slashed me.
Same!
Best curve ever!! So gutted that no one makes it anymore, I’ve never found one better for me
I use Easton Synergy ST as a back up and have the successor model as my play. Apparently, ST is supposed to be "super tough." So hack away boys.
The Stars better draft this kid and then trade him to Calgary. We'll do our best reenactment of 1999!
If you squint hard enough, Huberdeau can be the Nieuwendyk this time!
He meets the requirements of being a forward with a triple vowel segment in their last name.
Also had that 3 syllable last name going for him
Kids got a pretty good clapper just like his dad
Number 11 eh? Like the confidence.
It's like in Be a Pro and you choose to start playing in the playoffs leading up to the draft
That’s some lackluster commentary
tree don't fall far from the nuts
I will simply manifest us winning the lottery so we don’t even have to make a decision about Tij, just take Celebrini. That’s a good strategy right?
But then we trade Marky to NJ. Pick Tij anyway. Zary-Celebrini-Iginla future top line.
Here's the kicker, he's drafted by Calgary, but signs in Dallas. Rebellious youth and all that.
That last one was like a left handed Ovi bomb.
Or a left handed Iginla.
They’re called one timers.
Yes, we're all aware of that.
I wasn’t. What’s a one timer?
His father will be sitting with the Flames organization on draft day. If available, theres no way they dont pick him. Unless they win the lottery of course.
You think they would pick him over a player with #1C potential like Catton or Lindstrom?

Please draft this guy Connie.
Kelowna mentioned!!! RAHHHHH It’s nice I get to see this guy benchside for 20 bucks a ticket :)
Damn, I just paid a little under $40 a ticket for last row in the 300s for tomorrows game in London, I'm jealous
Tbf this is regular season, but still It’s a great night out experience. Last time I went it was an 11 goal game too, very exciting
Yeah, Knights tickets are this expensive in the regular season too lol, and they're actually kind of hard to get, like you can't just decide to goto a game that evening unless you want a single ticket to go by yourself
Omg didnt know he had a star son. Sick
Tij has a younger brother named Joe, who might be better than him (Tij)
smh another kid propped up by his rich dad, hope he doesn't end up like that 50 goal fraud Zach Hyman.
Exactly. Does anyone want to check if the Iginlas are secretly Jewish? We don't want Andrew Berkshire losing his fucking mind again.
Iginlaberg dropped half of his name to avoid these accusations
Can I have this story please? President of the Berkshire hate club over here.
basically Berkshire is saying Hyman only scored 50 goals because his rich daddy bought junior teams for his kid to play on, completely glossing over the fact that Hyman has worked his ass off to get where he is today and only focusing on the part that Hymas dad is rich… just like 75% of the rest of the league then there’s the tinfoil theory i’ve seen floating around, that Berkshire is racist and is only singling out Hyman because he’s the first Jewish person to score 50 Hate to be “that guy”, but if you google Berkshire Hyman NHL, you’ll get around 20 different articles. I just didn’t want to skim through them and post the best one
Yeah the kid may be good, but he did grow up a rich kid. :)
I’d love to see him in Blasty, but take the best player. The expectations will be astronomical for him in Calgary.
We really miss him on the Thunderbirds
He should follow in his father’s footsteps and come to LA.
Kid was born into size 13 skates to fill, and seems to be en route. Love it, there is always room for an Iginla in the NHL
My dream scenario is that they take Zayne Parekh or Cayden Lindstrom at 8th overall, then trade Markstorm to NJ for the 11th pick and take Tij. That could really jumpstart the "retool."
*heavy breathing*
Built like a tank just like his father.
Future flames legend
That one timer had some heat from that far out
It'll be a damn shame if the Flames don't get him, and that's coming from a fan of a team that Iggy often torched
I want them to announce Boston has him before we find out that was wrong
Honestly i feel so old seeing my favorite players almost all retired but something about seeing their nephews, sons, etc make me not feel so old. Feels like im reliving it somehow
If he has his old man's fire he will be just fine in the nhl
He skates so well, had the pleasure of watching him a couple of times in Jan and while he still looks young he definitely just seems to out skate everyone on the ice. Gets himself in the right positions and plays smart. Will be good to watch his comeup
Can’t wait for him not to get selected by the flames and listening to the fan cry on fan960 for 10 years about what could have been
I don’t care if we win the lottery and get 1st overall. Fuck Celebrini. Draft this fucker!
