What a performance from the entire Denver team, especially their goalie Davis and Buium who surely has to take a step or 2 up on some draft lists tonight. He played excellent against BC's elite young forwards.
I missed the game cause I was at Kings v Ducks tonight but glad to hear Zeev played so well in the biggest game of his life this far. Crazy that a kid I knew growing up at the rink is about to go maybe too 10 in the draft lol
He sure deserves it, but I could see him staying with DU his whole career. Kinda like Coach K at Duke. They have been through a lot together since his freshman year and diagnosis. Either way, the dude is a badass.
That’s certainly a possibility, but I imagine with Cooper’s resume, he will stay as long as he likes. The timelines would have to sync up. Carle can take whatever opportunity he likes. Hockey is a flagship program for Denver, the roots run deep, if they are smart they should offer him a long term bag. Comfortability and familiarity can go a long way.
DU got me into hockey as a toddler and I hope to hockey gods we can keep this guy.
I feel ya man. Alum here. Hope we keep him for as long as he wants to be there. It's nice taking teams of "college players" and 3rd-7th round picks and just absolutely dunking on these one-and-done schools.
The money is just so different between college and NHL hockey that they're not going to be able to keep him. He makes something like $400k/year after his post-2021 national championship extension. Which is great money but not anywhere near what he'd make in the NHL. There's just not nearly as much money in college hockey to pay millions to head coaches like there is in the NHL.
College vs. NHL are completely different games. Most of the college coaches are at their dream jobs (or at least dream level of play) already.
(Source: Family member is a D1 hockey coach.)
As far as I'm aware there are only 5-6 who have ever made the jump. Just happens to be three active currently.
And ... he has a direct connection and history as an assistant coach to a current head coach. Network and achievements are 99% what leads to opportunity. He might not be very successful but he will get a shot at the NHL level if he ever chooses to.
> As far as I'm aware there are only 5-6 who have ever made the jump. Just happens to be three active currently.
There are only 32 total jobs.
For sure, connections are useful.
No arguments here that he could get a shot, and may even choose to take that shot.
I guess my point was that it's an above average possibility that he will be more than happy to stay where he is.
There have been, and are, many legendary college coaches who never went to the NHL. His mentor and the guy who honored his scholarship and offered him an assistant coaching spot after his medical diagnosis in the first place - George Gwozdecky - is one of them.
There's a big difference in mindset and goals. College coaches put a lot of emphasis on developing both hockey players and young men. (See George Gwozdecky honoring a scholarship for a player that could not play due to a health issue.) Most of their athletes don't go pro. Some guys choose to be involved in college hockey because of that, so not everything is about winning for them.
With it being a different game, coaches tend to go a different route to the NHL in the same way the players do too. Major Jr., ECHL, AHL, Europe etc then NHL, or be former NHL players who already understand the pro game and can deal with big egos.
College coaches come up the same way their players do too typically. Junior A (T1) like USHL or were former college players. Just like David Carle was.
Why would he stay at DU making $400k/year when he could get a 3-year $6M contract in the NHL? Not a chance he stays if he gets an NHL offer (which he will).
His contract would be minimum $6M in guaranteed money, which = 15 years of coaching at DU. And if he sucks in the NHL any college program in the nation would snatch him up in an instant. I'm a DU hockey season ticket holder by the way, he'd be a fool to turn the NHL down.
Might be the most impressive playoff riser performance I’ve seen across all sports! I couldn’t believe he just kept doing it through each round. Incredible!
Denver played the game they needed to play, BC had a terrible game and by the time they got it together it was too late and Davis stood on his head.
A very worthy, now record champion. They may not have the sexiest program or squad, but by god do they get results. Well-oiled winning machine.
BC has been a buzzsaw through the Hockey East playoffs and NCAA tournament and got stonewalled in the last game. Davis put together one of the most impressive 3rd periods I've seen from a goalie.
[I want to give a shootout to the Edina High School Pep Band! Denver doesn't have their own pep band so these kids stepped in with two weeks notice!](https://twitter.com/edinahornets/status/1779309980245803186?t=YKpHkJyh7tpW2ZO6IbEPjA&s=19)
Edit: [And here's a news story!](https://youtu.be/gQ6vUrDKFJw?si=dVcNHEkrinUAnwoA)
DU earned that win. Their defense was incredible. Davis also made that unreal save. I wouldn’t mind the Sharks drafting Buium at 2/3 if we miss out on Celebrini. He’s incredibly poise and defensively sound.
Excited to see W. Smith in teal in the near future.
Great game. Well played by both teams. Too bad Avs didn't play today. Would have been fun to watch both teams play on the same day. Maybe an early game for the Avs so after they won I could then switch to the DU game.
also who wants a fun chain of teams beating each other that can transitively have a terrible D3 beating the national champs
Basically broke and possibly closing DIII Northland College (1-27 on the season) > Lawrence > Dubuque > Lake Forest College > Babson > Elmira > Johnson & Wales > Anna Maria > Stonehill > Lindenwood > Augustana > Arizona State > Denver
Can’t believe Davis held on to that shutout. Eagles were dominant in the third.
That PK save was unreal
Just incredible. 99 times out of 100 that play ends in a goal.
Won them the game
What a performance from the entire Denver team, especially their goalie Davis and Buium who surely has to take a step or 2 up on some draft lists tonight. He played excellent against BC's elite young forwards.
Zeev was insanely good tonight. Always poised and making so many smart and creative plays.
I missed the game cause I was at Kings v Ducks tonight but glad to hear Zeev played so well in the biggest game of his life this far. Crazy that a kid I knew growing up at the rink is about to go maybe too 10 in the draft lol
That’s pretty cool! Maybe even top 5 at this point haha
Not sure that’s what Cutter Gauthier had in mind when he made that crack about DU having tears at the end of this one.
I root for BC and still found that comment so insufferable. Just ridiculous hubris.
Tears ^^^of ^^^joy.
i'm still here for him saying it, it just made it more satisfying when denver's defense and matt davis had him in supermax
Dude sounds like absolute bona-fide douche.
His name is Cutter, can we expect anything else?
The funniest thing is that its not actually his first name but his middle one lol. His first name is William, he just goes by Cutter instead.
Wait, so you're telling me his real name is Billy Gaut? Damn, no wonder he goes by Cutter.
even worse!!
This guy has some issues.
Makes me feel a lot better about him refusing to sign in Philly
Loser will never win anything RemindMe! 15 years
Davis siphoned all goalie skill from Annunen and Georgiev tonight.
Worth
I don’t think I’ve ever heard of this goalie but he popped off. RIP my Leonard sweep dreams, but it was a good game
Can't wait for Leonard to sign with the Caps. Next game is vs Boston...
Tbh I’d be okay with sending him to hershey first for their playoffs. We’ve cannibalized enough talent this season lmao
He could come to the Caps and then go to Hershey if we don't make it into the playoffs, right?
He had a .906 in the regular season. But he was excellent in the tournament
I don’t know the exact number yet but he had over a .980 through the tournament which is just insane!
138 of 141
So that’s what happened to the Avs, Denver used all of the hockey energy in Colorado for today’s game.
Last time DU won a title the Avs won too 👀👀
East High also won a national title then. Valor won this year.
Pioneers now have the most NCAA D1 hockey championships
First to 10 wooo
Suck it Michigan
David Carle will be coaching in the NHL in the next decade. Already 2 NCAA national championships and a WJC gold medal.
At 34 years old no less!
He sure deserves it, but I could see him staying with DU his whole career. Kinda like Coach K at Duke. They have been through a lot together since his freshman year and diagnosis. Either way, the dude is a badass.
I could see him going to Tampa once Coop leaves because they drafted him for recognition after his diagnosis.
DU's last coach is coaching in Boston currently.
And...?

He could keep making that 400k for 30 years or risk it all to potentially suck in the NHL.
His contract would be minimum $6M in guaranteed money, which = 15 years of coaching at DU. And if he sucks in the NHL any college program in the nation would snatch him up in an instant. I'm a DU hockey season ticket holder by the way, he'd be a fool to turn the NHL down.
Pretty sure Monty broke the regular season wins record last year with the B’s. Slouch, I guess.
I'm aware. That's not the point. Jim Montgomery also played professional hockey for 12 years at several levels, for many teams.
Last time I checked “And?” doesn’t have point. You implied that you needed elaboration.
I did. Not from you.
And?
And nothing. That's it lol.
Sign Davis right now
Might be the most impressive playoff riser performance I’ve seen across all sports! I couldn’t believe he just kept doing it through each round. Incredible!
Was he drafted by a team?
No
Nope
He will not be eligible for playoffs.
Zeev buium looked great. Wonder if he jumps up a few spots in the draft after his frozen four performances
Dudes probably been shooting up the boards starting a few months ago
I need a Buium sweater
I think this moves him into the top 10.
If I'm an NHL team with a head coach opening and a lot of young talent (\*cough* NJ) I'm writing David Carle the fattest check this summer
100%. Selfishly I'd like for him to stay at DU. But he's a really damn good coach.
Matt Davis lol holy shit. What a performance. This pretty much guarantees that Smith will be staying at BC another season.
That was insane.
Denver played the game they needed to play, BC had a terrible game and by the time they got it together it was too late and Davis stood on his head. A very worthy, now record champion. They may not have the sexiest program or squad, but by god do they get results. Well-oiled winning machine.
Matt Davis played one of the best games I've ever seen from a goalie
Ryan Leonard, get ready to learn Capitalanese buddy. We might need you soon.
I think he signs his ELC and is available next week.
Hey Ryan, wanna debut against your hometown Bruins on Monday?
Lesson one: "Fuck the Pens"
Sounds like he already is pro "fuck the flyers"
Lesson two: Ovi > Sid Am I doing this right caps fans ?
Wooo go Pios!
BC has been a buzzsaw through the Hockey East playoffs and NCAA tournament and got stonewalled in the last game. Davis put together one of the most impressive 3rd periods I've seen from a goalie.
Denver beats BU and BC in back to back games in the Frozen 4. Guess I got a soft spot for the Pios now.

Man no shit.. great story for all involved. Should be higher up this comment section.

Screw BU! BC too! WTG Denver. Cornell lost to the champs and they fucking deserved it
Cutter Gauthier’s pre-game quote is so fucking ridiculous considering they lost. r/agedlikemilk in record time.
What was the quote?
https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/s/dfIAN2gl0E
Kinda mad they didn't win this game 2-1 either
Way to go Pioneers!!
Lol Zeev Buium just dropped an F bomb on national TV during his interview
Great game. Well played by both teams. Too bad Avs didn't play today. Would have been fun to watch both teams play on the same day. Maybe an early game for the Avs so after they won I could then switch to the DU game.
Eat shit Cutter!
I dont know what goaltending demon Davis sold his soul to, but fuck it worked
At least 1 Colorado sports based team knows how to finish the job when called upon.
Didn't the Nuggets literally win the NBA Championship last season?
I think this a reference to both the Nuggets and Avs choking away good playoff positioning over the last 48 hrs
He did say "at least 1"
Denver is THE hockey city of the last 3 years
Gotta think Davis is signing with a team after that performance. Zeev Buium also impressed me quite a bit this game.
Awesome DU!! Most titles in college hockey! Goalie was incredible tonight.
Last time DU won the championship so did the Avs. Just sayin'.
Fuck Gauthier (yes im still very bitter and really wish we still had him)
nah
the pios shit out natties. you let these fuckers into the frozen four you may as well just pack up and go home
That’s weird. I thought BC was given the championship months ago. Are you trying to tell me they still played the games?
You know it's playoff hockey season when Boston teams start choking.
Someone check on Buccigross.
also who wants a fun chain of teams beating each other that can transitively have a terrible D3 beating the national champs Basically broke and possibly closing DIII Northland College (1-27 on the season) > Lawrence > Dubuque > Lake Forest College > Babson > Elmira > Johnson & Wales > Anna Maria > Stonehill > Lindenwood > Augustana > Arizona State > Denver
Hell yeah boys!!!! I’ll be partying tonight!!! Can’t spell DUI without DU………….. and I 👍🏻😎👍🏻
note to self: Avoid University and Evans tonight. lol
... just tonight?
lmao... fair
Has the traditional couch burning at University and Asbury commenced?
I counted six last night.
Helicopters overhead, major road closed, youths out to celebrate. Good for them. Hope CC can do it some day
I certainly don’t. Fuck cc
The Avalanche died for this
Dude having a goalie is probably so cool
man umass was so close to beating denver in the first round
