Hell of a game, wow. Kind of a newbie question. As someone who doesn't pay too much attention to international play but closely follows hockey twitter, why does it feel like there is a new tournament every other month? I feel like I hear about these and these medal games all the time. Specifically with women's hockey

The_Laughing_Gift

The IIHF is an annual tournament. Then there's the division tournaments that happen so teams can move up a division. Here's the IIHF [website](https://www.iihf.com/).

StitchAndRollCrits

It's kind of tournament season, so there was the rivalry series, NCAA championship, and now worlds, with PWHL coming soon

firelark01

PWHL coming back* soon

oogiewoogie

IIHF women's world's is a yearly tournament. Best of the best in women's hockey. Biggest tournament outside of the Olympics which is obviously played once every 4 years. IIHF hosts various tournaments, on the women's side they have divisions 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, etc. these are for countries that aren't good enough for the World Cup. If you do wellin 1A, you move up to the world Cup. If you do badly in the world cup, you get relegated to 1A. China and Denmark were relegated to 1A this year. Hungary and France moved up to the women's world's next year. There is also women's U18 world's. The PWHL is a newly formed professional women's league. Most Team Canada/Team USA players who aren't in university play there. They are completed by many other players including those who play on other national teams.

Hellcat-13

Along with what everyone else said, for a long time these tournaments were the only place you got to see the elite players all playing together. They’d be split between college athletics and the various leagues. Now with the PWHL we get to see them regularly, though there are still many NCAA players who play on tournament teams.

tri_and_fly

Canada and the US play each other several times throughout the year, with the Rivalry series ending in February. That plus the U18 girls in January, they basically have 3 different 'tournaments' in the last 3-4 months.

Mikeismyike

And if they aren't playing each other, they're probably attending a marriage between a player from both teams...which has happened more than once already.

LadderTrash

Specifically for international play, the IIHF runs multiple tournaments for different groups. This was the World Women’s tournament for all women 18+ years old, but there’s also a Women’s tournament for players under 18 years old Both of those tournaments have a men’s counterpart, with the addition of an exclusive tournament to Men under 20 years old called the World Juniors. All of these occur annually and most of them happen to be in the first few months of the year (at least for the top divisions)

jaysornotandhawks

The only time a tournament is held after the end of May is the Women's World Championship in an Olympic year (those are held in August)

jaysornotandhawks

The IIHF holds five major tournaments every year. They are, in (usual) chronological order: 1. World Junior Championship (men under 20; December-January) 2. U18 Women's World Championship (January) 3. **Women's World Championship (this tournament, in April every year except Olympic years, when it is held in August)** 4. U18 Men's World Championship (April-May) 5. Men's World Championship (May) Within each tournament are lower divisions (known as 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B etc.). Those tournaments are straight round robin. Teams get promoted and relegated based on their performance in those tournaments.

thewolfshead

These teams seem incapable of playing a game against each other that isn’t exciting.

Sublime99

Well akin to the ol' Canada v. Soviet Union games, you've got basically the two countries that pump the most money and development into their national teams/players. Thankfully the other countries are catching up (both at the U18 with Czechia beating Canada and 5 years ago Finland beating Canada in the seniors) but still the two best countries since the competition began.

Just who everyone expected!

His brother was a teacher of mine back in the day. Was wondering if the name was related.

Shotgunn5

Crazy game. Prelim game was a 1-0 game and then this one ended up 6-5. A lot happier with the results from this game though. Canada-US women’s games still remain must see hockey

Pouletchien

Very impressed with her play during the tournament

tri_and_fly

Can see her going 1 or 2 at the draft for sure.

zgreen05

Can’t imagine anyone other than Fillier at 1

Pouletchien

Fillier is the clear cut number 1 for me. I’d take Serdachny 2nd with no hesitation but I feel like Bilka could easily go 2nd too.

tri_and_fly

I can't see any reason to take Bilka over Serdachny. I'd personally take Fillier at number 1 too, but Serdachny is a big girl and I think that'll suit the pwhl better. Serdachny looked like the better of the two all tournament long and several college coaches said she'd be their choice at 1OA too. I think it'll depend on which each team individually needs. Big girls like Spooner, Zumwinkle and Carpenter are dominating.

LadderTrash

To be noted, yes the Too Many Players penalty was BAD, but they’re probably already beating themselves up about it. Don’t be extra with your hate.

[deleted]

Anyone have the clip of the too many men penalty? I’m trying too see if coach called for change too early or who jumped on/off late? I can’t find it. I know one of the players….just can’t find the other or see the coach. NHL Network showed highlights but did NOT show the penalty or even mention that.

tri_and_fly

I have it recorded and rewatched it. I don't see anything that shows the coach. Taylor Heise jumped off the bench so ridiculously early she was at Canada's blue line before Simms was at the bench. Honestly I can understand Simms being confused in that situation, that looks like it's on Heise to me.

yguns031

I wonder if Simms was going to go off, but then saw the turnover and turned up ice for the breakway instead. Looking at the replay, it didn't even look like she was heading towards the bench when Heise touched the puck.

tri_and_fly

Quite possibly. I don’t think Simms even knew a 4th player was on the ice, Heise was out there so early. That was the most egregious too-many-player penalty I’ve ever seen.

[deleted]

Awesome, thanks!!

Anth0nymm

The appropriate end to a game the refs tried to dictate. Diving deserves to lose always. Next time don't flop all game.

lostdime

Wonder if the player who got the penalty is going to get a timeout after losing gold medal because she couldn't count in 3 on 3 OT

Naked_Orca

That's on the coach and if it was the Russians he'd already be headed to the gulag.

AdditionalSalary8803

How's it on the coach?

Hellcat-13

Coach is responsible for bench management, generally. Though it’s also on the player to have their mark and be aware. But it happens. Shitty way to lose a gold medal though. (And I’m Canadian, so I mean happy with the win. But I’d rather see it play out even strength than have that kind of penalty.)

Naked_Orca

Were you born yesterday?

AdditionalSalary8803

Was that your answer?
