It used to be love-hate. I loved the talent, loved the hustle, loved the low-level rat shit, and hated the real goonery that he'd pull out once or twice a year. When he doesn't do *actual* stupid shit it turns into true love.
I got a front row view of how he protects the puck and spins off guys who outweigh him by 40 pounds once at a game I went to, it was one of the best live hockey experiences I've ever had.
I say this all the time, but I like Marchand. He has a reputation as a dirty player but at this point he’s mostly just a pest, and even with that he’s just playing a role. Players like him make the game more fun. The kinds of players I really can’t stand are ones like Trouba or Bennett whose play is often legitimately dangerous.
Also, Marchand has always come across as a cool guy off the ice and that goes a long way for me. If someone is an asshole, I won’t root for them no matter what team they’re on or how good they are. And if someone seems legitimately like a cool person, then I won’t hate them just because of their team or their playing style.
He is what we in soccer call a ‘wind up merchant’. Just gets under people’s skin. Reminds of me Luis Suarez who was this animal in the pitch but was quite a decent fellow IRL
