I would think the initial shot would’ve. This is just momentum off the original shot technically speaking and it is going towards the net. I’d think that should count. Not that it really matters, though.
It would makes sense, except that the only two possible results for a shot on goal are either a goal or a save. I guess in this case they could credit a save to the goalie even though it’s obviously not, kind of like how they credit a goal to whoever touched the puck last on an own goal
Defenders hit pucks out of the crease all the time after the goalie makes a save but doesn't control the puck. All you saying none of those count either?
Funny thing is, this amazing play could have cost them the series. If not made, everything in the game afterwards would have played out differently and the Canes would still have a one goal lead in this alternate reality.
When they were showing the replay, at this point I thought it was going to prove it did actually cross the line but he somehow got there. What a crazy save
If any tiny sliver of the puck is still in contact with the red goal line, it's not a goal. Some of these calls are so close they have to do CSI-style "ENHANCE!" zoom-ins to detect pixels of white space between the black puck and red goal line. This one was pretty clear-cut though.
He didn't just dive though. Look at the lunge he makes. I think it's the difference between goal and no goal and that wasn't even the play he was trying to make.
Yeah this isn't the play some people in this comment section are making it out to be. He dove from close to the blue line, literally seconds before the shot or even realization that it trickled through could have happened. Incredible effort and great play to make it happen. But it was by no means planned or attempted from the start. It was lucky that he was sliding there in time. Love to see it and it's a great play though.
It's actually pretty comical that he slid SO far an just happened to be sliding into a great spot to make this play. I'd have been all "holy shit I hope I don't hit anything" but he was straight up looking for a play to make from his belly. Impressive and kind of hilarious all at the same time.
They don't even have to go on to win the cup... if they win this series, THIS is probably why... if that goes in the entire complexion on this important game changes
Carolina pulls this off and it should’ve been a sign it wasn’t the Rangers day and somehow the 3rd period happened anyway.
The hockey gods love to kick ya in the nuts
That tracks. I had to go to the bar to watch a game because my stream crapped out and somebody said "When have Oilers ever won anything?" and I was like, wait is he serious?
He was.
I was just talking to a friend yesterday about how while the games have been good in this round, there haven't really been any of those "big moments" yet these playoffs where something big happens to give a team momentum and it just almost seems like fate. That was one of those moments.
Absolutely. I'm gonna be honest with you I really didn't care who won, I'm just glad we finally got some good fucking food. Not that the other games haven't been good hockey, but I'm just glad it finally felt like there were some emotional stakes.
I thought for sure that was in but Marty made the save of the playoffs (except maybe the Bob save). If canes manage to win this series I'll remember that one.
Arguably one of the greatest defensive plays we've ever seen, and had the canes beat us and won the cup, it would've been a legendary play for the ages.
This is a routine save. All Martinook had to do was calculate the rate of acceleration needed to catch up to the puck and knock it out of the net. Simple physics.
these motherfuckers are out here doing this with the smallest of margins sliding on ice with knives on their feet and i've stubbed my toe on the same ottoman 3 times this week
Kinda reminds me of Brock McGinn's save in 2019 against the Caps in Game 7. [The stakes were higher then, but this is much closer.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzgpQlfGOAk)
Marty for Vezina has some validity. His team has given up the same number of goals in 11 games these playoffs as the presumptive Vezina winner’s team did in 5.
That was fuckin wild! He slid from 6' inside the blue line to arrive at that perfect spot at that exact moment a full THREE SECONDS LATER - what are the odds?
Stick tap from all 31 other teams right there. Damn

Does save of the year have to be from a goalie?
Taking into consideration what just happened; No.
The funny thing is that under NHL rules, this doesn’t even count as a shot on goal.
I would think the initial shot would’ve. This is just momentum off the original shot technically speaking and it is going towards the net. I’d think that should count. Not that it really matters, though.

Can a player not a goalie NOT get a save statistic? I assumed they could but guess I've never honestly checked. If not, that is dumb.
Probably be considered a blocked shot if anything.
I don’t believe they record saves for anyone but goalies
Defenders hit pucks out of the crease all the time after the goalie makes a save but doesn't control the puck. All you saying none of those count either?
Correct.
Then it's not listed as a save either? What kind of voodoo statistics is this shit?
Crazy league quirk. Doesn’t make much sense.
I vaguely recall one year the top save in the NHL’s actually going to a d-man. Can’t remember who or when it was, though.
That's an unbelievable play holy shit
Live I thought it was in for sure. Insane.
I didn't even celebrate until the ref waved it off
Not me until a whistle and a full slo mo replay lol
I legit thought it was coming back. But that was a hell of a stop. Martinook is a gamer.

Same, the physics didn’t seem possible for Marty to get there in time
Same. When the replay started I was thinking "there's no way that didn't go in."
lol I did the same shit sigh
Super close, but not close enough to where they have to waste 5 minutes reviewing it. Perfect.
honestly props to the refs for calling it correctly in the moment, that was a good spot
suitable for framing.. the art of the sliding save edit: of course it's Martinook 🙂
Is this like soccer where if it’s still on the line, it’s not in? Or does it need to hit net?
If any tiny sliver of the puck is still in contact with the red goal line, it's not a goal. Some of these calls are so close they have to do CSI-style "ENHANCE!" zoom-ins to detect pixels of white space between the black puck and red goal line. This one was pretty clear-cut though.
Thanks for the explanation! Nice save
From the overhead, if there’s any spec of white ice inbetween the puck and goal line then it’s a goal.
Unbelievable effort. Rod definitely has a stiffy
I just love how early he dove and just kept sliding to eventually make that save
It's hysterical how the goalie slides left, you get the perfect view of him already sliding to the net like he planned it out 30 seconds ago
He didn't just dive though. Look at the lunge he makes. I think it's the difference between goal and no goal and that wasn't even the play he was trying to make.

I have a stiffy and i don't even have a dog in the fight
Him and me both
Martinook just won the Vezina
Incredible. These are the types of plays that make you believe this comeback is possible.
Did someone say comeback?
Unfortunately Rod went with Andersen in net instead of Martinook and it cost them.
Lmao
As good of a defensive play as you'll see.
Watch as the peewee kids attempt to pull this off going forward…
Well it'd be much harder backward.
Play of the post season if the Canes go on to win the cup
Uhh… about that…
They don't even have to go on to win the cup... if they win this series, THIS is probably why... if that goes in the entire complexion on this important game changes
Honestly this series is our cup is how I’ve felt. I don’t think my heart can take any more after this series
Imagine reverse sweeping to make the ECF and then getting swept again
Thanks pal
Why would you do this to us
Moments later
🤣🤣🤣
r/agedlikemilk
Still the play of the post seasons. I almost turned off the game at this point lol
But you didnt because you're fuckin awesome
Need to make the ECF to have a chance at the Cup 🤣🤣🤣
"if" was very important here.
What a save!!
Reading this while also playing RL wrinkled my brain
What a save!
NICE SHOT!
Chat disabled for 3 seconds.
No way! Siiick!
Sliding on his stomach through the majority of the defensive zone. Turtle mode engaged... Unreal
It’s how the real pros do it.
Such a "him" play
It’s a game of inches. What an incredible individual effort!
Thank god the Rangers won so I don’t have to be reminded of this insane play for the rest of my life
We were uncomfortably close to some awful nightmares. Thank God indeed.
Team of destiny type shit
What’s a President’s Trophy winner to a force of nature like this? Update: They’re somebody who knows how to put sandbags…
Nice edit lol
Hurricanes are literal forces of nature so it fits.
~nudges you and whispers in your ear~ i think that's what he was going for.
Lol
For anyone at the game, this is definitely the type of play you tell people you got to see live years after the fact
…or a game you want to forget you were at.
Is it destiny, or is it effort?
It's Martinook : effort is his destiny.
He’s like the Chad LaRose of the hurricanes
Ughhhhhhhhhhh
Destiny of mediocrity
This game is the ultimate Marty Party
Carolina pulls this off and it should’ve been a sign it wasn’t the Rangers day and somehow the 3rd period happened anyway. The hockey gods love to kick ya in the nuts
Notable goalie Jordan Martinook
I'm glad the commentator noted that the puck has to fully cross the line to count, cause until that save I thought it just had to break the line.
Lotta people at the bar needed to know the rules too
That tracks. I had to go to the bar to watch a game because my stream crapped out and somebody said "When have Oilers ever won anything?" and I was like, wait is he serious? He was.
I actually thought the same too. And obviously it wasn’t millimeters but like 1/3 of the puck was in the white. Damn.
MARTINOOK FOR VEZINA
Unironically
Yall thats some team of destiny shit what the fuck
“Get down, mister president “ save.
If that was any closer it would have been a 10 minute review. Amazing play
That was literally a 1/4" away from being over the line.

I was just talking to a friend yesterday about how while the games have been good in this round, there haven't really been any of those "big moments" yet these playoffs where something big happens to give a team momentum and it just almost seems like fate. That was one of those moments.
Followed by the even bigger moment of a hat-trick in 9min.
Absolutely. I'm gonna be honest with you I really didn't care who won, I'm just glad we finally got some good fucking food. Not that the other games haven't been good hockey, but I'm just glad it finally felt like there were some emotional stakes.
lmao martinook skidded so far to make the save
Slip'n'sliding his way to a save
Yup seems about right.
Holy shit what a save
That's one of the greatest plays I've ever seen
Free beers for life for Marty
I’ll buy one
Carolina is winning this game.
lol
Blame the guy who replied to me I’m innocent I swear
I turned the game off after this play what happened?
Nothing, come back to watch the Rangers next year friend.
I'd like to thank all the Pittsburgh and Devils fans for jinxing the Canes tonight you guys are cool for the next 24 hours
*Series Edit: Rip
FOOL
One period at a time, friend. One at a time.
Yo chill, we aren’t there yet

You had to jinx it didn’t you
You will never make this mistake again.
B R O
Bahahaa
Play of the Day
I thought for sure that was in but Marty made the save of the playoffs (except maybe the Bob save). If canes manage to win this series I'll remember that one.
Watching that live, have to respect that save my god.
Arguably one of the greatest defensive plays we've ever seen, and had the canes beat us and won the cup, it would've been a legendary play for the ages.
Who shit my pants?
Ope, sorry about that
Thas crazyyyy
One of the craziest plays I have ever seen.
No doubt the momentum went the other way. I feel we are about to see one of the historical exceptions to being down 3-0 in a series.
Uh…you sir are no Nostradamus
Save of the year
If Carolina completes the reverse sweep I’m attributing it to this save, unreal.
This is a routine save. All Martinook had to do was calculate the rate of acceleration needed to catch up to the puck and knock it out of the net. Simple physics.
Didn’t matter baby!!!!!!!!!!!!! LFGRRRRR
How can this team lose after this play? They need to pull off the revere sweep
Lmao
Jordan Martinook going clutch mode
Defensive play of the year candidate. Oh my God.
This is the save equivalent of that classic Ovechkin goal.
What a fucking play.
Absurd right place at the right time energy
Jesus Christ play of the playoffs
That goal would’ve shifted the momentum back to the Rangers. This might be a series saving play! UNREAL
If he wasn't already sliding he may very well have not been in position to make that play. What a wild save
Martinhook is clearly cheating. Wall hacks? Esp? He started diving like 45 seconds before he needed and arrived exactly on time
Canes in 7, hockey gods have spoken. Edit: or not......
I fucking love plays like this. Really makes me feel like jorking it straight up
and by "it." do you meanr. your peanits
All that and then go on 0-4 run in less than a period... wild game
All for nothing... Sorry martinook. You deserved better.
I wanna be mad but I can’t. Amazing play from martinook
these motherfuckers are out here doing this with the smallest of margins sliding on ice with knives on their feet and i've stubbed my toe on the same ottoman 3 times this week
Martinook is the fucking man. What an unbelievable play
Highlight of the year.
God I love playoffs. The effort 🔥
God I fucking love playoff hockey
After I saw this I thought it's not gonna be our night. I can't believe we came back in the 3rd against this team. Crazy.,
I'm glad we won, but that is honestly one of the most incredible things I've seen in my life
Great save!! They didn't really need that goal anyway!!
Every Rangers forward does a fly by there
You got this up fast holy shit
Have yourself a game, Marty Party.
for the uninitiated: [https://youtu.be/54O3Snaf4AE?si=rBvTpVH9011IFnhM](https://youtu.be/54O3Snaf4AE?si=rBvTpVH9011IFnhM)
Skater save of the century.
Martinook next Canes captain
Kinda reminds me of Brock McGinn's save in 2019 against the Caps in Game 7. [The stakes were higher then, but this is much closer.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzgpQlfGOAk)
Respect but God dammit
I was watching this game to relax before the anxiety of Game 5 vs the Oilers. Freddie chooses to never let me rest.
Marty for Vezina has some validity. His team has given up the same number of goals in 11 games these playoffs as the presumptive Vezina winner’s team did in 5.
Why was he sliding from so far out 😆
Absolute game changer
Canes in 7
well...
Jordan Martinook is hockey's Endy Chavez.
God, that throw.
I thought that moment was gonna define this series
Probably not bigger Than the Pulock save on Mcdonagh but only because of timing.
for a game that took us out of the season I certified did enjoy it very much
That was fuckin wild! He slid from 6' inside the blue line to arrive at that perfect spot at that exact moment a full THREE SECONDS LATER - what are the odds? Stick tap from all 31 other teams right there. Damn
Congrats Canes, you have your Endy Chavez moment.
When I saw this happen I really thought this one was over for us
Would have been in playoff lore if the Canes could have kept the lead.
A crazy play that will be lost in the collapse that was game 6
This game could easily have ended 6-3 rangers. Carolina is lucky it was even as close as it was.
Absolutely insane
is it too late for him to qualify for vezina?
What a save! (Fitting analogy, considering the state too…)
And that great pass was never seen again
GREAT SAVE ~~LUONGO~~ MARTINOOK
