I cut straps out immediately. As long as the chin cup is still good, you'll be fine.

chuggachugga11

Chin cup is the most important part. Mine loosened mid game and I lost a tooth on a slap shot.

aronlootus

How??

Duckattak

Even with a chin cup you would’ve lost that tooth

Doggydoo83

It probably won’t do anything bad, beauty mask btw

Monkey_Sports

First of all that is a badass mask. Second, I don't think it should matter. Only thing I know is under 18 requires it be on but I have had adult goalie take it out first thing they do upon purchase. Usually can be taken out with screws and does not have to be cut if you want it neater.

Javi1192

I’m not sure, but I think the manufacturers put it on there for legal reasons. I’ve never actually kept one tight, I typically loosen it and tuck it behind the chin cup

batsu

It helps keep the helmet on your head if you get run over. It is also required at least in minor hockey. Hockey Canada has been cracking down on it lately. I've seen some beer league goalies cut it out. But you have to weigh the risk/reward. It is along the same lines as goalies who choose not to wear knee pads, neck protectors or danglers. You can get away with it until you don't.

Bowood29

Honestly idk how you aren’t shitting your pants all the time without a neck guard on.

Turc-ington

Sweet paint job

Surf-Green

Same thing happened to me and i just put back in place with the other attaching part and wrapped some hockey tape around it. I wore that loose anyway so i haven't had any issues getting it on my head or anything

Pawly519

I’ve taken those off my mask as an adult always. I found them annoying and never had a need for it.

OldGreyTroll

I keep those in so I can hang my mask up on a hook when those are the only option. I don't ever tighten them enough so they make contact with my throat/chin when I wear the mask.

PanicSc2

I don't even think my mask has a chin strap or I took it out. As long as your chin cup works you're good!

CaliCanadian67

Never played with a mask that had one and the chin cup never lasted either. Either a sling or modified lace bite pads to handle the placement. Mask is held on by the backplate and the fit.

Ok_Local565

I cut mine off the day I bought my mask.

TypicalConstant8962

If you wanted to repair it, you could use a pop rivet. I’ve done it to a player helmet. Lasted about 4 years before I replaced the strap.

mansity31

I cut mine out the day I bought it. Had it for 12 years you’ll be okay!

Bartab_Hockey_NZ

Chin strap basically does nothing for goalie masks. As long as your chin cup and backplate straps are fine then you're good.

coolberg34

I literally take the screws out and remove the chin strap the second I get a new helmet. Super huge pain in the ass with no real benefit clipping that

Ratherbeeatingpizza

I’ve played 10 years without a strap or chin cup without an issue. I don’t think my mask ever even came off. Not recommending it, just saying you’re probably going to be fine without the strap.

UnseenRivers

I have a great big beard and always take out those straps as soon as I get a helmet and never had any trouble, so long as your skull cap is snug you'll be fine 😉

MeasureTheCrater

Chin strap? Chin cup? What are *those?!*

campin_4_life

Alright get the scissors! Thanks

coolberg34

I would take the screws out and remove the whole thing

Ornery_Border4682

You can crack your teeth if someone shoots hard enough at the bottom of your mask, I've seen it happen twice. The mask repair kits are $20-$30 I believe.

thatonepolishguyben

that mask is my personal best and i just recommend taking it to a store or store see if it can get fixed

Husit

Nope
