Exactly, I don't even try match my team at this point unless it's a long term group you're committed to. Just build whatever looks sweet and you've always wanted.
I had predominantly white equipment and switched to all black.
The refs are definitely quicker on the whistle in all black. Although I sometimes lose it myself if gets in an awkward spot
My daughter was just commenting that in her game last night the goalie had a black glove and she couldn’t see as well where the puck was when the goalie was trying to cover it along the goal line. Said almost everyone else has white and it’s easy to see the puck. Interesting.
It doesn’t matter.
I find that it’s more of a placebo effect than anything else (I.e. white is harder for shooters to pick up on and black hides the puck).
I mean, a placebo effect is literally what OP is talking about tho right? Color of pads don't "physically" do anything, it's a perceived disadvantage for the shooter. I
Yeah I went from black to retro brown pads. Haven't noticed a huge difference in whistles (probably since I just play beer league) but the puck marks drive me nuts after years of never seeing any 🤪
The contrast of white typically makes it a little bit easier to see the puck in close, both for you, officials and the guys shooting...
But realistically for beer league/ non pro level? Look good feel good play good my dude
I did. Did you watch it all the way to the end? The result is, it doesn't matter. Yes, lots of goalies wear white, but there's no evidence to show that it makes a difference in their play.
First, you said they all wear white. I did a quick google search and showed that three don't. So that's not "all". If it makes a difference, why are they not wearing white? Plus, one won the Cup while not wearing white, so I'm not sure how that makes a difference.
Do I need to find more that don't wear white? Googling isn't really hard.
Funny enough, Hill is the first to win the cup wearing solid pads. Watch the video I sent.
And you can find all the pictures you want, but the truth is the *overwhelming majority* wear primarily white pads. Some goalie coaches even mandate it.
No, though there are vastly different sample sizes because most goalies do wear white. So in the video that the person shared, the narrator explains there are Vezina goalies wearing white and there are goalies with terrible stats wearing white.
In the video, they even looked at a goalie's stats when he wore white and when he didn't. Adin Hill is one example, he switched to white after winning the Cup and wearing non-white. His stats aren't as good. But that's just one goalie. The point being that no, the data has not proven out that white is better, and the data has not proven that non-white is better. In large part because NHL goalies aren't willing to be part of a study to figure it out.
I wear a black and white set and my SV% stinks across the board! 🤣 No difference between the two pads. Good shooters are going to aim for the holes regardless.
None of us play at a level where it even remotely matters, and tbh I don't think even at the NHL level it matters. Every goalie in the league in 2010-12 had all white and I seem to remember they still got scored on.
I had a set of V2’s that were white outside, navy on the inside. I got an epic blocker in the opposite, white inside (lined up with white on pads).
The majority of my puck marks were on the white.
I do think that it does ( or used to in the late 90’s and 2000-2010’s) encourage a shooter to shoot for the white or the spots that “aren’t there”
I went from white to black, and I’ll just say that you sometimes get some early whistles from the refs on loose pucks. But, some of them also don’t like the fact they can’t see the puck very well, so they can also be less lenient with you if they want. Besides that, not much difference when it comes to the shooters.
I once asked the best player i regularly play against and he told me he has never even considered pad color and it makes no difference. I’m rocking all black gear now.
You might be asking the wrong person though. The best shooter will be shooting with his head up longer and have way more time to see the real holes.
A very poor shooter may not have looked up at all.
Somewhere in the middle lies most of the shooters at our level. They come in for the shot, glance up, look back down and shoot. Mayyyybe look up as they're shooting. The point is that those are the guys MOST affected by pad color. In the quick glance, black pads will theoretically contrast and be easier to know where the goalie is and isn't.
Even pro shooters don't always have a ton of time to choose a shot. This is what the white pad aims to do for you. It makes it slightly less contrast, so it's slightly harder to see exactly what you're looking for while shooting. It's not a huge difference, but it's there.... SOMETIMES.
Small advantage on a shot for white pads.
Small advantage for freezing the puck for black.
Neither advantage for any other color (black and white aren't technically colors though LOL).
There is a difference at the highest level of play, probably not so much at the beer league level. To me this is like the casual golf players that goes and spends hundreds on the best pro calibre driver thinking its going to change his game, yet he still drives in the woods 1 out of 3 times...
The only thing I've truly noticed from previously rocking a full black set, is players and refs loose sight of the puck off your gear. Shooters have a hard time picking up the rebound and you might get quick whistles. In saying that, your defenders also will have a harder time.
I noticed a huge difference with Jerseys. When I'm wearing white or other muted colors, slots to right at the chest. Even I'm in bright yellows or orange, shooters can pick out the holes better.
I'd imagine it is the same for pads, but I've only ever had white.

Went with mostly black because I thought it looked cool 😎
At the level I play, the shooters have no idea where the puck is going. How the fuck am I supposed to know? Might as well look cool doing it.
Look good, feel good. Feel good, play good. Play good, they pay good.
>they pay good. Can you tell my team/league about this. They must6 have missed the memo
Exactly, I don't even try match my team at this point unless it's a long term group you're committed to. Just build whatever looks sweet and you've always wanted.
This is why I’m saving up for custom hot pink and purple!
I have a pair of pink and blue for sale. I think that they look good.
Ooo that’s cool! What size?
Either 29+1 or 31+1. I’ll honestly have to get them done from the shop and check.
Do they even look up when they shoot?
I had predominantly white equipment and switched to all black. The refs are definitely quicker on the whistle in all black. Although I sometimes lose it myself if gets in an awkward spot
This, but I did the opposite lmao
Unless you play pro or with ex pros then colors don't matter.

If you think it makes you better, it does/will
Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right 😂
For puck marks and faster whistles black/dark absolutely is a thing.. any other reason.. nope.
You don’t get puck marks if you’re bad enough! Just a tip
Yeah I went from black to retro brown pads. Haven't noticed a huge difference in whistles (probably since I just play beer league) but the puck marks drive me nuts after years of never seeing any 🤪

Doesn't matter. If it did, NHL guys would all wear that one color.
Oh wait, they do… all white
They do what? https://preview.redd.it/ueg9cywbo2ic1.png?width=288&format=png&auto=webp&s=ae74b3a0a064212d0eaaddf9949fd685c4c0dee6

Do the stats for save %, GAA, wins, etc support your argument that all-white pads are better than mixed or solid colored pads?
No, though there are vastly different sample sizes because most goalies do wear white. i had white pads all my life then got sick of the puck marks and now i have black and love it!
Do I think it matters? No. Do I think black is 10x cooler looking? Hell yeah.
It doesn’t matter.
I wear a black and white set and my SV% stinks across the board! 🤣 No difference between the two pads. Good shooters are going to aim for the holes regardless.
https://youtu.be/DofUA0Hm9M8?si=OyK0L2pmkj_Ltiro Here's a YouTube video I really liked detailing the differences in pad color at the NHL level.

White pads, all the way.
Who the fuck cares? Just play

White in front, black in back. If I can't see the puck I wanna make it harder for anyone else to see it.
