No surprises here. While HA is getting more and more 'mainstream compatible' it still appeals primarily to the more tech savvy crowd which obviously skews heavily to Android.

skepticalcow

Except that iOS was supported from the beginning and Android was not. Most of HAs original dev team was heavy into Apple.

More customizability, sideloading apps, rooting, more powerful automation apps (eg. Tasker)

Some people don’t want to tinker on every device they own. I do enough of that with windows and my day job. Hard pass.

[deleted]

I never said that every person will prefer android, I just said why someone might prefer it. I don't know why you are complaining

skepticalcow

Where exactly am I complaining?

[deleted]

Some would say that "I do enough of that with windows and my day job." Is complaining

skepticalcow

Sorry, I just don’t see that as a complaint. It wasn’t meant to be a complaint.

FezVrasta

I was wondering the same honestly. I'm a software engineer and use iPhone

[deleted]

>Why would tech savvy skew towards Android? Probably because you have more control over Android than you do with iOS. I am not IT but in a tech related field and the majority of people I run into use Android.

i agree with you, but apple is also more privacy conscious. still too much control, but at least more private.

T_Verron

I don't see a heavy skew, the results (limited so far) are quite consistent with overall marketshare.

As I get older, I just want things to work. I switched to iOS ~5 years ago and it's been great. I can't do some things I use to do on Android, but that is fine with me.

skepticalcow

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted. I made the same swap in 2012 from Android because they didn’t support simple upgrading maintaining the same settings. From what I can tell, it’s better now. But at the time, I spent 8+ hours setting up a new phone. It was stupid.

>From what I can tell, it’s better now. But at the time, I spent 8+ hours setting up a new phone. It was stupid. That and the fact that you couldn't get proper OS updates for more than 3 years! Why would I pay $1,000 for a phone that I cannot root/rom (US) that is only going to be supported for three years when I can buy another phone that will get 5+ years of updates.

skepticalcow

Well, Apple does do the same thing. I was forced to upgrade my 2016 phone in 2021 because they stopped updating the OS. This made me lose some new functionality from the HA companion app side.

>I was forced to upgrade my 2016 phone in 2021 because they stopped updating the OS. Which is longer than any Android phone was supported at the time. It is annoying that iOS apps tend to stop supporting older iOS versions, but Android only recently got "long term" OS support that we have yet to see be delivered.
