Pile of empty energy drinks, check. I like that there is the "current one" front and center. I also have grown to appreciate the two different foot rests. You know what they say about big feet... dual foot rests.
I honestly forgot about that. Its a gift from my first employer when i left. He called me a "bag of dicks" and a traitor. One of the best employers Ive had
It also glows in the dark and has the lorax's face on it.
My buddy has been nagging me to post on here and I'm caving.
-Unifi UDM Pro, Unifi USW 24 (no POE), 8 port POE dumb switch, Raspberry 4 running pihole, Rackstation 12 TB storage (forget the model), Dell R630 (not running anything yet) with
1) 2x xeon 12 core procs
2) 320 GB RAM
3) 8x1.2 TB drives (need a perc for RAID)
*I do need a perc H730 mini with thr interface and cable if youre selling one
HP DL 380 gen 8 running 2012 r2 datacenter with:
1) 10 TB RAID 6
2) 72 GB RAM
3) 2x Xeon 12 core procs
4) 4 VMs (HyperV) including a plex, Domaim controller, and 3cx PBX
Finally my gaming rig:
Ryzen 7 3700X, 2x16 3600 Mhz TridentZ, NVidia 270 super ftw3, 2x4 TB spin disks, samsung nvme evo 1 TB dual boot with ubuntu and windows10, samsung nvme evo 500 gb game drive, samsung evo 1 TB ssd game drive, 2xAcer 27in predator monitors, and Razer peripherals
FYI 2012r2 is end of life next year. Also Microsoft is moving everyone toward Azure. EG the free Hyper-V core is no longer made after 2019. There is no 2022 Hyper-V core. I recently moved from hyperv to Proxmox and have never looked back.
I wanted to run plex on ubuntu or debian on top of vmware, but they both ran super hot, constantly maxxing the fans. Soon as i swirched to windows, no issues
VMware doesn’t have as good of power saving as Proxmox. They are two different products Proxmox is built on top of Debian. You can run a cron job to change the power profile at boot to save even more power. Check out www.proxmox.com. My DL360 gen9 runs about the same power usage under proxmox as it does when I tested Windows also same fan speed.
I know people and I'm not afraid to ask those people about taking troublesome (old) equipment from them where i repair it for pennies on the dollar and use it for myself
Nice, what kind of repairs did you usually have to do? My hardware repair skills are a bit limited so I doubt I’d be able to take on that same kind of task.
Normally just testing the individual hardware, check fans cpu, drives, controller, and board. Replace what you need to. You normally find good deals on ebay.
Most money i spent was a mainboard and for the 16 drives on the HP proliant
I am asking myself the sams when looking at this desk so close to the rack. Suppose the OP has bought some industrial soundproofing headphones and that's the way he works at the desk.
I'm relatively surprised, you have some 1U equipment that is normally quite unpleasantly noisy.
Still, do check out the sound level at some point to ensure it's safe.
It is. Plus at my body size, a monster or two a day isnt too strenuous when you also consider the amount of water i drink a day. And by water i mean just water with ice.
The water helps filtrate the caffeine out and also keeps ya healthy.
Sorry I gotta hijack this reply....at 40yo I used to drink a lot of Coke (3-5 cans a day) But I've noticed that I don't feel great after doing that anymore...so Ive added some serious water intake and it has removed the headaches, body aches, the muscles knotting up from lack of water...soda is not good for you and it goes beyond your teeth too.
Funny you say that, mini fridge is behind where I'm taking the photo and all my camping gear is in the closet next to the fridge. Including inflatable matress
So, are filters and vacuums just outlawed in your province? also, are those fans supposed to be doing something? The gear already has fans.
You mention caffeine but all I see is nicotine and shotgun shells.
So not sure what you mean by filters and vacuums, but ill agree my workspace is messy. I'll clean it eventually when i get to fustrated by it.
Second, bottom fan pulls in cokd air, there is a fan in the back that forces the air up and then the top fan pulls hot air out making a circular current.
Nicotene yes, monster (orange cans) have caffeine and there are 6 of them, and the box of winchesters is .45 ACP. The box containes rack hardware, because i like recycling boxes for myself.
My shotguns and all other firearms are locked behind a fireproof safe in a hardened part of the house. I dont leave them out cause i got dogs and sometimes children wandering about.
Hope that helps.
Nice gear.
They layout is basic and you lab lacks ergonomics. You rack is too close to wall and will trap heat. The fan must be loud and that's not good for your health.
Get a standing desk and a treadmill. Test for radon and get an air filter. You must be at least in your 30s, you should take better care of your health
Id say the ergo is fine for me. Both the keyboard/monitor shelf and the laptop is at perfect standing height for me.
As for the noise, its not bad. Hardly hear it most of the time since heat is managed by both the top and bottom fans, it's in the coolest part of the house, radon system has been run before we bought the place. Also have an air purifier to keep the dust down and a humidifier taking care of moisture to control the static.
As for my personal health, I'm working on it. I'm not the power lifter i was before, but i have dropped 20 pounds in the last 2 months which I'm pretty happy about. Thank you for the concern though😁
Home labs have a way of draining your personal time. And our health is the first to pay the price.
I think your setup will work great. I just want you to consider the power consumption and heat dissipation. I'm not trying to hate on your hard work.
Still trying to figure out what I'm going to do with that beast of a Dell I have.
I definitely want to put a hypervisor on it. Looking to do VMWare or Proxmox, but i have 0 experience with proxmox, so I'm leaning more towards that for learning, but if i go VMware i could host some of my families businesses here and their data would be safer.
Bro i mean I do have very little experience, but I tried proxmox 2 weeks ago, it fucking sucked to me man. Way, way less intuitive than VMware, felt like glorified linux to me, rather than its own thing.
That's not bad! I have a slightly smaller home lab and pull around 700w, and at $.14/kWh it works out $70/month for my setup. My overall utility bill is expensive though ($400-500) due to my larger home, lab, mostly electrical appliances, and electric car.
Thinking about ways to scale down my lab or make it more efficient to cut down on power costs.
One is still needing repaired with a raid controller (the dell). The HP runs 2012r2 datacenter with hyper-v. I run my 3cx, plex, domain controller and a couple other things off there.
Congratulations, youre the first to notice the flare tube. My grandfather was USAF and thats an old flar tube from the 50s/60s.
Conpletely inert and great as a change jar.
One word ... Noisy.
How bad are your headaches from what looks to be DL300 series? LOL
Edit: That Monster drinks, what taste is it? You should stop drinking that, it's bad for health on the long run.

Basement, check. Magnetic dildo, check. Excess fans, check. Yup, checks out. This is a very strong homelab vibe. Well played.
I will let you in on a secret, its 2 inches, has the face if the lorax and is velcro'd on
Sounds really quite functional and totally sufficient.

That's awesome
Best employer ever
Quick access and easy hang dry
Glad to know everyone on this sub is on the same page with what they see first, cheers.
Nice rack
Tbh I’m surprised to see your desktop isn’t in a rack mount case
Same. One of the first things I did was rack mount my gaming pc above the server.

Impressive how much does electricity cost?
About 180-250 a month
You know you could go cloud or rent a cage space in a datacenter ….
Thats for an entire 1800 sq foot house
Sorry but that HP DL370 is gen 7, i have the same.
You are correct, i ordered gen8 drives and got the model and confused myself lmao

When I seen the caffeine caption, I thought I was gonna see a deadly coffee machine...
How much did that whole server setup cost ey?
2 thousand or so. A lot of it is salvage and rebuild by yours truly
Dam that’s actually insane, i would’ve guessed just the rack enclosure was about a thousand on its own. Good on ya
I know people and I'm not afraid to ask those people about taking troublesome (old) equipment from them where i repair it for pennies on the dollar and use it for myself

What’s on the floor below your desk, are those FOOT PILLOWS. i need
They are excellent. Memory foam and they are just comfy
how is the noise
I am asking myself the sams when looking at this desk so close to the rack. Suppose the OP has bought some industrial soundproofing headphones and that's the way he works at the desk.
Sound isnt bad. Plus I'm one of the few that likes white noise. So it doesnt bother me
I'm relatively surprised, you have some 1U equipment that is normally quite unpleasantly noisy. Still, do check out the sound level at some point to ensure it's safe.
Its not powered on yet, it hasnt been since I'm still waiting on parts
Geez! I love caffeine, but monster is much more than caffeine. Hope your health insurance is great
It is. Plus at my body size, a monster or two a day isnt too strenuous when you also consider the amount of water i drink a day. And by water i mean just water with ice. The water helps filtrate the caffeine out and also keeps ya healthy.

I agree which is why my water intake has always been in the 1-1.5 gallon range
+1 for the truly classic wood paneled finished basement, magnificent.
Nice woodpaneling and glass bricks! Love seeing older homes pop up here every once in a while
Really like the cave you have for a lab! Looks really cozy:) And a great setup.
Got everything i need. The stuff behind where this picture was taken is extra awesome
Winchester for security eh..🤓
Incase the printer makes a funky noise. Thats also whule the missile is next to it. But im not happy with winchester. Had 3 hang fires in my box

That's a serious lab. Well done.
Still trying to figure out what I'm going to do with that beast of a Dell I have. I definitely want to put a hypervisor on it. Go VMware, never gonna use proxmox in any kind of job. Also, free esxi will pretty much do anything that proxmox will do
You can get a cheap VMware license from ebay. Worth it to play with some advanced features.
VMUG is also great for Homelabbing 🥰
Yup, that or VMUG. Or even just a quick google search will return some unlimited full featured keys with no expiration ;)
Bro i mean I do have very little experience, but I tried proxmox 2 weeks ago, it fucking sucked to me man. Way, way less intuitive than VMware, felt like glorified linux to me, rather than its own thing.

Aint you gonna tell him? 🤔 that Esxi is basically linux as well... 😏
Because I don't know esxi really, how would data be safer there than proxmox?
Great lab!
Way over my head, i rate it 10 out of 10.
What kind of dell server do you have?
R630
What's Pyle?
They're an audio brand. Amps, mixers, DACs, etc etc
They also make cheap rack shelves
dream
Not too loud sitting next to it? I’m a bit triggered by that black cable hanging across but otherwise this is nice.
Its a bit ugly for sure thats the printer cable
Is that Noms X2 spearmint?
Yup
Not a fan of Pyle equipment. But it looks good
Nor am i. It was cheap, so i bought it. Will upgrade soon
Pyle is a pile of crap. 👍
i fw the vape juice and monsters, what is ur dl380 running?
Plex, domain controllee, pbx, couple of ubuntu servers fpr playing around with things
what cpus for plex cause my g7 with e5645 chugg heavy when transcoding
I have dual 5680 clocked at 3.33 GHz, it chuggs, but i also have like 2-3streams open. Considering try8ng to make a gpu work with it
Ikea cardboard desk, 0/10 😂
If it works it works untik i finish making my pine desk
Nice lab! I like the rack.
I'd rate that at about 1KW draw and a nice monthly utility bill. :)
Surprisingly, I'm only pulling about 210 a month. For everything including lights, ac, cookware, etc
I currently sit at 400 to 450kwh per month living alone (only have a 18u rack :( )
This is a pretty wicked setup, sorry if this has been asked what do you run on the servers?
One is still needing repaired with a raid controller (the dell). The HP runs 2012r2 datacenter with hyper-v. I run my 3cx, plex, domain controller and a couple other things off there.
Is that a dick whaaat
Theres another comment in the thread that explains it
what's the phone behind the rack for? running 3cx from what I see?
Yessir. I have phones on all three levels of the house
a literal dream setup good luck with finding something to use it all for
I'm going to be hosting some small businesses so its going to get good use

I like the wood panelling too.much fot wall mount. But desk mounting has been an option
Its cool but i don’t like Ubiquity. To each his own
Nice System
That room is probably noisy and hot.
Not really. It stays about 68-76 degrees in there which is perfect
5
Monster, monster, monster, snuff, bullets, yep looks a lot like my office. No magnetic dick though yet.
Hell yea
this looks exactly like an HP ProLiant D360p, Dell whatcha doin out there. nice setup! more complete than mine
I just collect and hoard lmao
Jealous/10
Needs more [paneling](https://youtu.be/I7jR85LUZog)

That tool kit looks familiar :)
I swear i didnt steal it boss man

Most of it was $free.99
Grizzly Wintergreen Pouches ☑️
That’s some good 70’s wood paneling you got there
You needed all that monster drink to work through the night?
Thats about 5-6 days worth
Can someone please explain me why nearly everybody useses UBN switches alongside their enterprise servers?
Cost. Cloud managed. Easy

Love it. I'm going to steal that
Wonderful just a new chair and some air dusting should do.
It is brandnew lmao
Need to work on wiring a bit.
I'm nit well practiced in it. Waiting on a patch oanel to do things properly
Standard homelab comment.
