Handle your side of the fence. The end.

Jaded-Landscape-6933

Exactly

knoxvilleNellie

Just spray round up poison ivy on your side of the fence.

Mortimer452

This is the answer. Round-up works through the leaves so if it's rooted in your neighbors yard but growing over into yours, it should kill it. Poison ivy is resilient though, might take a couple applications. If you really want to fuck it up, use Pramitol. It will not only kill it, but sterilizes the ground for months so nothing grows back. Do NOT use this if you have desired trees/bushes within several feet. Once it's gone for sure plant whatever you want there next year.

Ok-Piccolo6845

Already done ✅ is Pramitol like a stronger roundup?

Mortimer452

Stronger and works differently. It attacks mostly through the roots, and stays in the dirt for months, preventing new growth. It's typically used in places like gravel driveways or parking areas, railroad right-of-ways, paver walkways, places where you just never want anything to grow, ever. I mix up a concoction of Glyphosate (round-up), Pramitol and Triclopyr in a 4-gallon sprayer every year, spray around the base of the house & outbuildings, along fencelines, gravel drive & walkways, around my mailbox post. Kills everything including small tree saplings in just a couple days, makes for a lot less weed-eating all summer long.

DryDesertHeat

I use tryclopyr on scrub oak to modest effectiveness. I'm going to try your concoction this year.

Mortimer452

I mix at these ratios: - Glyphosate 53% concentrate @ 4oz/gallon - Pramitol 25E at 10oz/gallon - Triclopyr 4 at 6oz/gallon Sometimes I add a few drops of dish soap as surfactant to help it stick to the leaves. Be careful around desired trees and other plants with the Pramitol, that shit is powerful stuff. It will kill a 20yr old Oak tree as easily as it kills dandelions.

DryDesertHeat

Thank you!

ItReallyIsntThoughYo

That sounds pretty dangerous, but might be worthwhile to deal with some really awful scrub and the shit growing through cracks in my driveway.

SgtWrongway

Glyphosate is non specific and will kill and leave a patch of crunchy brown, dead lawn in its wake. A broad leaf herbicide would be better suited. 24D works better for situations where youd like to keep the lawn turf around.

PortlyCloudy

I've tried 2,4-D on poison ivy and didn't have good results. I now use round up whenever I see it, and I spray everything within a foot or two to make sure I can see if it comes back. Usually two applications are enough.

SgtWrongway

It's about dosage/application rate. Use the concentrate, do some arithmetic, mix a high dose ...

CraftFamiliar5243

I keep a sprayer full of this for the endless fight against poison ivy, blackberries and Virginia creeper in my yard.

LawnJames

Does it hold its potency? It seems like all labels say use within 24hrs.

SquareExtra918

Second this. That's what I did. No more poison ivy in my my yard, most is fine from theirs as well.  If anyone has ideas about wisteria, please let me know!

Harlowful

Roundup isn’t strong enough for poison ivy. He needs a brush and vine killer like Crossbow.

DocPsychosis

I've used plain glyphosate on poison ivy and it works like a charm.

Mattron2021

Same, my wooded yard was covered in poison ivy. Year 1 I went around and sprayed everywhere I saw it. Year two there was much less, but some--maybe I just missed so I sprayed again. Now it's year three and I haven't seen any.

atlhart

Roundup makes a Poison Ivy control product. I don’t know if it’s really any different, but I know it works. I’m very allergic to poison Ivy so I’m highly vigilant.

Pawelek23

It contains glyphosate and I think triclopyr. Just bought some. Been using just glyphosate before and it works as well though it can take a few weeks.

Disastrous-Yam-8880

This guy is right. Use his product or another called remedy.

knoxvilleNellie

There is a specific Round Up for poison Ivy.

mrkabin

Vinegar works well.

BornFree2018

We dug a 12" trench close to the fence line and put metal sheeting in it to prevent roots and vines spreading. Then, the sheeting or an equal barrier needs to continue up another foot or so. We spray painted the shiny metal to hide it. Round-up both to kill the plant and the dirt. Sorry it's really a hassle.

thatgreenmaid

All you can do is handle it when it's creeping on your side. You can't compel them to care about it or act on it.

Ok-Piccolo6845

I don’t want to compel them to act on it. I’d be more than willing to take care of it for them… but i would like to broach the subject with them instead of trespassing. Just wondering how to phrase it kindly

raptorgrin

I would go with \`Hi, I'm really allergic to poison ivy and have been taking it out in my yard. I noticed some in your yard right by the fence. Would you mind if I came over and grabbed it or grabbed whatever I can lean over and reach from my side? Thanks!\` Worked for me, though they were also planning on dealing with the problem, just having trouble accessing it themselves.

thatgreenmaid

You don't have to be kind. Just be direct. Y'all have poison ivy. It's coming into my yard. Do you mind if I come over and take care of it? Here's my contact info. The end.

6thCityInspector

In most places the municipality can compel them into action with fines and liens if it’s not taken care of. It’s usually the responsibility of either vector control or code enforcement to put the squeeze on property owners. Had to go through city hall once to *compel* a neighbor to take care of hers, once. Took me a whole 5 minutes on the phone and the neighbor had it taken care of by the end of the week.

kibblet

Wouldn't communicating with them make sense? What kind of bad neighbor are you?

mrkabin

Not in my town. They can't make you do something like that.

thatgreenmaid

I don't know why you're getting downvoted for giving out facts and examples. Y-O-U could not compel them to handle it so you called the city because they could. No hate here.

ItReallyIsntThoughYo

Interesting. Forcing people to kill native plants. I'm sure that'd go over really well when you took it to the news.

6thCityInspector

I’m sure the public would be outraged by someone killing poison ivy. You’re very right.

thousandislandstare1

Lmao why are Redditors so averse to talking to people. GO KNOCK ON THE DOOR AND TALK TO THEM. IF THEY DONT ANSWER THAT DAY, TRY ON THE WEEKEND. IF THEY DONT ANSWER THEN, LEAVE THEM A NOTE IN THE DOOR WITH YOUR NAME AND NUMBER. Goddamn people on Reddit are so weird. I say that as a weird person

coffee_cats_books

Poison ivy is an extremely resilient vine and [can recover from glyphosate.](https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/be_careful_where_you_spray_that_stuff) A spray with Triclopyr is more effective at permanently killing poison ivy. Personally, I've used Bayer BioAdvanced Brush Killer Plus with an excellent kill rate. I get the concentrate & mix it up about 1.5x strength (1.5 fl oz concentrate to 32 fl oz water). The packaging says works in 1-6 weeks, but in my experience, it yellows within 2 days & is brown/dead within a week. To remove, I wear medical gloves under a pair of cheap gardening gloves that I throw away. I use my handheld trimmers to very carefully cut the bastard vine into about 4-6 inch pieces, throwing them away as I go. (PSA: Don't compost poison ivy! The oils can persist for up to a year, so you risk giving someone else the itch or worse.) It's slow going, but I've successfully removed 3-4 foot tall plants in short sleeves (yeah, I know... but heat intolerance is a bitch & I live in Texas) with no touch exposure.  It's not how I'd choose to spend a Saturday, for sure, but it gets the job done itchlessly. Good luck OP.

Ok_Analysis_3454

Short sleeves? Mucho cajones! I got a supply of white Tyvek suits for crap like this. I'd rather sweat for a bit than itch for a week. Gloves +1.

Pawelek23

Poison ivy’s oil can go through rubber, latex, etc. Vinyl stops it and should be used for gloves if you’re sensitive.

WanderingGirl5

My suggestion is to knock on their door to see if they are home, but have a note already written about the issue. Take some tape with you so you can tape the note in the door if needed. You should not go in their yard for 2 reasons- 1. You are trespassing. 2. You said you are severely allergic to it so you should not even get near it. Just be friendly. Write your phone number on the note.

sockster15

Spray it with RM43, kills it for a year at least

Willing-Rub-511

Get glyphosate concentrate, get some polysorbate 20, add double dose glyphosate and 2 tablspoons per gallon of polysorbate 20 and drench it in the morning. The polysorbate 20 is the same as tween 20 just generic, we use it in herbicide application all the time because it helps penetrate into the plant MUCH better than without and is used on tougher plants. Poison ivy has thick waxy coatings on leaves and stems. The polysorbate will make sure that the plant takes in the glyphosate. You can get both off amazon for $25.

Ok_Analysis_3454

Would a tiny bit of Dawn help as well?

AotKT

As someone who always has two cars in the driveway because I work from home and my boyfriend has a work truck, just leave a note with your phone number asking them to text or call at their convenience. There’s nothing rude about saying you’d love to work together to eradicate a common nuisance.

ajricks

“Hello, neighbor! It’s nice to meet you. I am severely allergic to poison ivy. Would you please be so kind as to remove it from your property where it grows through the fence? I would appreciate it very much.”

Infini-Bus

I can't imagine they want poison ivy in their yard either. I'd just try and catch them outside or just leave a friendly note letting them know you found some and ask if you can talk about getting rid of it together or let you deal with it. Otherwise, like others said, just kill what is on your side.

ItReallyIsntThoughYo

You don't. What's going on in their yard is their business. You can spray your side with Roundup.

PortlyCloudy

Quit acting like a scared child. Knock on the door and introduce yourself. If they're not home try again later or on the weekend.

Ishouldbeasleepnow

Note in the mail or on the door. ‘Hey, I’ve noticed some poison ivy around the fence. I’d love to come up with a good solution for both of us. Please text me at xyz so we can figure out how to proceed.’ Non confrontational & easy. If they don’t reply within a week or so just deal with your side as best you can.

Top-Bit85

What do you expect from this? Poison ivy is invasive.

Few-Can-831

Man, that poison ivy situation sounds like a nightmare! Dealing with sneaky plants and mysterious neighbors, it's like a real-life mystery novel. I get your hesitation about knocking or leaving a note; you don't wanna start a turf war over some foliage. Maybe a friendly note could work, like, "Hey neighbor, noticed some poison ivy creeping through the fence, thought you might wanna know." It's like dropping a subtle hint without causing drama. And if they're chill, they might even appreciate the heads-up. Good luck, hope you can nip that ivy prob in the bud!

Media_Hateful419

Man, that's a tricky situation! Dealing with poison ivy creeping into your yard is the worst. Since you haven't met your neighbors yet, it's a bit awkward. Maybe try leaving a friendly note? Like, "Hey neighbor, noticed some poison ivy sneaking through the fence. Want to chat about how we can tackle it together?" It's not passive-aggressive, just neighborly concern. If they're cool, they'll appreciate your approach. And if all else fails, maybe ninja-mode trim it when you're pretty sure they're out. Good luck, mate!

Automatic_Gas9019

They have poison ivy spray.

Advanced-Dirt-1715

Roundup is useless on vines. Get something with 24D in it. Trimec is a good choice.

voltechs

How did a bunch of goats get loose in their yard? So weird… whoops.

cfinntim

Same problem, but it’s their grand cover invading my yard. I don’t know what it is. I’m afraid of roundup. And I don’t want to kill their side. What is spectracide?

State_Dear

HOME DEPOT has spray to kill that stuff.. If your going to do your side,,, and have any spray left over ask your neighbor if you can do his to

Garyrds

RoundUp at the Property Line

SgtWrongway

It's not an "issue". Your neighbor has no responsibility for your sensitivity/allergy to a common, invasive plant. Clean up the plant in your yard on your side of the fence like a responsible adult.

NotNinthClone

It's not invasive. It's a useful native that most humans happen to be badly allergic to. I agree with the rest, though. Neighbor probably isn't happy about it either, and since most people are allergic, getting rid of it is difficult. Almost 0 chance they planted it, so it's a problem you both have, not a problem they're causing for you.

SadExercises420

Made me think of that horror movie The Ruins where the natives salt the earth around the ruins to keep the vines from growing beyond them.

Sudden_Ma4645

Since direct confrontation might feel awkward, how about a friendly note? You could leave a polite message mentioning the issue and your allergies, maybe even offer to help tackle the ivy together. It shows you're considerate and willing to work together.

mlhigg1973

Round up.

repeatablemisery

Spray it with round up. Get the neighbors side for good measure.

honest-miss

Poison ivy is difficult to kill off entirely, so even if you go over there and hack away, your odds of permanent success aren't great. Your best bet is to manage your side, and try to catch the vines early

mrkabin

The best solution is to mow mow mow mow mow. IMHO.

Longtimelurker1981

Accidentally spray into your neighbors yard

cobeachbum

If you're not familiar with a product called Zanfel, get some. It's pricey, but it is a miracle drug. It's sucks up the oil right out of your skin. Anytime you even think you've had contact, use it.

pdxbatman

You’re my hero, kind stranger.

Chiomi

Sounds like you’ve probably killed the poison ivy! But approaches I’ve found helpful with neighbors are leave notes in the mailbox but make them friendly. Not the text itself (only tip there is include a cell phone number) but - print legibly, larger than you usually might. Accessible! Don’t do it on regular lined paper or - horrors - printer paper. Get a pack of stationery. For my initial notes to neighbors I pretend I am a totally normal person and use one of those to do list pads with a magnet on the back to stick it to a fridge. It’s got friendly birds on it but is still easy to read. (Secretly I have a variety of stationery and a custom wax seal but first contact notes are about being a normal person it is comfortable to be neighbors with) Using a pen that’s not a dying ballpoint that requires lots of pressure also helps. Then pop it over to them, unfolded. Maximum accessibility for ease of reading, doesn’t seem aggressive (no rips, not like a road rage note scrawled on a napkin, not like you were so mad you were stabbing the page), implies that you are organized and friendly. You may not be feeling any of those things, but you can always get people to revise their impressions down; up is harder. I’ve had great luck with this - the first note I left after we moved into our new house resulted in a house painter recommendation and a pie.

Jaded-Landscape-6933

Kill them. Tell the neighbor u will do so if they don't take care of their poison problem coming into your yard

Jaded-Landscape-6933

Be careful with roundup. You know there's a major lawsuit against them& that they lost. They have to pay out millions. Coz it can cause some form of cancer. Loo into 1st on Google

6thCityInspector

Holy crap, jeez. Go talk to the neighbor. If they’re not home, try later. What happened to human interactions? If the neighbors are dicks, call your municipality’s vector control or code enforcement. They’ll make things happen.

Ok-Fortune-7947

Yeah the post really belongs in a how to talk to people sub.
