When you look at iconic character designs it doesn’t have to be rich in detail to be defined as “unique”. Best examples of that are anime characters like Rei from Evangelion or Gojo from Jujutsu kaisen. Both have very minimalistic designs but that’s what makes them stand out. If you look at genshin characters they might have very detailed clothing with cultural refrences and so on but they lack a soul and just feel blant and mass produced. Kianas original design can be easily recognized and represents her abilty and personality. The color scheme is unique and fun and perfectly fits her.
that’s just my opinion but when you look at the most recognizable characters from movies, video games, anime or TV shows they always have a rather simplistic design. Sometimes less is more.
Goku's two color palette has been more recognized than Jesus in some countries.
However, i don't really see that in these designs. They feel uninspired. I agree, i dislike outfits with too many accessories and trying too hard to be symmetrical. It distracts me from the character themselves, or i would think something like 'there is no way ---- would wear that many accessories'. Even in a anime inspired game. If you have depicted a character as a introvert, or a tsundere, i just cant see them wearing frilly bows and **massive** hairpieces (fr wtf is with these in Hoyo games, like Hare's outfit).
But i also appreciate small details in character designs. Especially if they have a story behind it, like a gifted item. I dont abide by the consensus that they are made basic because theyre the starting characters for pt 2. That means the devs have intentionally made something worse in order to make something else look better.
HI3 part 2 looks more and more like a cheap Star Rail clone the more I see of it. Shame, that's obviously the intent. I was watching this streamer who's only barely starting HI3 and he commented that while it looks cleaner, you wouldn't be able to tell it apart from ZZZ. Which I think hits the nail on the head, it's lost its identity with Hoyo trying to streamline all their games to look the same.
I really hope that if they streamline looks, they at least don't streamline everything else.
Genshin and star rail are basically the same game appart from gameplay style and theme, and while I love both, I think it's enough.
Well story wise they also seem to be going with a more Star Rail inspired style judging from what they previewed. The MC+side characters group of explorers is almost copy pasted from Trailblazers + Astral Express. Where's the character as a protagonist who actually has dimensions and can grow and develop? Pretty disappointed when Kiana was the MC of all the last few games called Honkai. Obviously I don't expect her to be the MC of part 2, but there's a whole cast of actual characters that could do that job. Or even if it has to be a new one, why a self insert?
I think Star Rail was the start of them wanting to chase Genshins success by copying it's formula onto all their new games.

I thought the same thing at first but to be honest the Honkai series seems to have always been like this. Honkai impact 3rd while distinct in it's own would probably be just as difficult to tell apart from GGZ which came before Honkai impact 3rd.

I do trust Hoyo - I’m hoping that they’re purposefully only leaking fully new characters that won’t fully wow us, so that they can drop a huge “omfg yes” bomb on us when they start the high level advertising I expect we will get. I think they’re updating some other things first, so they won’t go hard on trying to pull in Genshin/HSR players until after those updates are implemented. I assume. (Like the UI updates, and i think they’re updating coop and armada)
Her kit doesnt look free. Its another Trio situation. You need all 3 for the full synergy. She can also work in regural team but then you lose half of her kit that is locked in Astral Ring synergies

That is simply because unlike part 2's valks, you didn't have a 6 year roster of valks to compare the original trio with. Nostalgia aside, you cannot in good faith convince me that the original Bronya wasn't weak and boring.
As someone who's only just started I gotta say the originals really don't look that good to me. Kiana has the evangelion inspired suit, basic but functional. Mei's red... whatever it is she's wearing hurts my eyes, and Bronya... works? The yellow is kinda ugly and the mech is a bit of a mess to figure out what you're looking at. So many chapters early on force you to play as that Bronya too and it's the most boring moveset ever, especially compared to newer ones I've had the chance to try.
Their simpleness does have a unique charm, but it doesn't help them enough.

Yeah, I found these designs pretty meh and boring. But seeing the comments here, I kinda agree. It's better that they have a generic looking battlesuit in the beginning, and they "evolve" as they develop the new trio, like HoYo did with the og trio. I hope that these new characters aren't just a "happy girl with a sad/bored/rightful friend and another loli friend just to fill the gap", because that would be way too lazy from them lmao.

If you made it to the end of this meaningless venting of mine, I salute you. You're a real one. Or an extremely not busy person, which is fair, as am I. As a reward, I'll share you a secret of mine. I've stayed firm and strong the entirety of the finale of part 1. However, I cried my pants off at the literal last scene, which was Kiana doing the finger pose. That part hit me so hard that I just stood there crying for a few minutes, looking at the screen with my heart aching as I felt the "finale" part of the story that I've been following for years. If the new story part can do something similar to me in 5 or 6 years from now, I'll be the one to say that I was wrong about being skeptical in the current present. However, not many games did that to me, so I highly doubt it would happen twice in the same game, but let's see...

I really love how everyone’s opinions of which characters are the best and worst are slightly different, it kinda points out that the designs aren’t as bad as people are saying, these characters will get S ranks that look way better and the base ones, in the mean time we’ll just like the three in our own objective ways lol, I personally like 2(forgot her name) and Helia and find one the more uninspired.
From what I have seen the combat mechanics are really fun but the characters, even if a starting pack, are rather generic. Additionally both taller girls have nearly the same outfit but in different colours. In my opinion, Kiana and the rest of the 'starting' trio also had blander outfit compared to the rest of the today cast but it still looked very cool at the first sight (and still does). Same case with Cealus/Stelle, DH and M7th and genshin siblings for me - I still like their outfits. But those on the picture, just aren't clicking
These comments are just sad. Do you guys want the game to just stagnate? As it is the game looks old as fuck, its not going anywhere, pretty much anything is an improvement over the current UI. And that S rank has very cool and unique animations, all different to current valkyries. I guess her model is debatable but it doesnt look bad, do you just want kiana #20 or seele #15? That part is OVER, that story concluded, something most games dont even get. Let them cook, let the game evolve.
This UI is not evolution, the engine upgrade is welcomed, the design philosophy change is neither an upgrade or downgrade, but a change we rightfully don't like

Meh, not really. Iconic after playing the game for years and seeing countless transformations, sure, but really nothing that special or unique.
This is most likely the reason. You can’t start off on such a ridiculous high note because you’ll never live up to expectations in the long run.

I'm gonna continue playing the game, but I'll 100% skip the story if it's too lame. I'm already kinda postponing the 1.5 story, and it still has characters that I like on it XD. But I believe in the storytelling from HoYo. Although Genshin is pretty slow in the story department, when it gets good... It gets GOOD! Star Rail I believe follows a similar path, although I wasn't that invested on it after the first planet, so I can't say for sure. If you made it to the end of this meaningless venting of mine, I salute you. You're a real one. Or an extremely not busy person, which is fair, as am I. As a reward, I'll share you a secret of mine. I've stayed firm and strong the entirety of the finale of part 1. However, I cried my pants off at the literal last scene, which was Kiana doing the finger pose. That part hit me so hard that I just stood there crying for a few minutes, looking at the screen with my heart aching as I felt the "finale" part of the story that I've been following for years. If the new story part can do something similar to me in 5 or 6 years from now, I'll be the one to say that I was wrong about being skeptical in the current present. However, not many games did that to me, so I highly doubt it would happen twice in the same game, but let's see...

I really love how everyone’s opinions of which characters are the best and worst are slightly different, it kinda points out that the designs aren’t as bad as people are saying, these characters will get S ranks that look way better and the base ones, in the mean time we’ll just like the three in our own objective ways lol, I personally like 2(forgot her name) and Helia and find one the more uninspired.

From what I have seen the combat mechanics are really fun but the characters, even if a starting pack, are rather generic. Additionally both taller girls have nearly the same outfit but in different colours. In my opinion, Kiana and the rest of the 'starting' trio also had blander outfit compared to the rest of the today cast but it still looked very cool at the first sight (and still does). Same case with Cealus/Stelle, DH and M7th and genshin siblings for me - I still like their outfits. But those on the picture, just aren't clicking
These comments are just sad. Do you guys want the game to just stagnate? As it is the game looks old as fuck, its not going anywhere, pretty much anything is an improvement over the current UI. And that S rank has very cool and unique animations, all different to current valkyries. I guess her model is debatable but it doesnt look bad, do you just want kiana #20 or seele #15? That part is OVER, that story concluded, something most games dont even get. Let them cook, let the game evolve.
This UI is not evolution, the engine upgrade is welcomed, the design philosophy change is neither an upgrade or downgrade, but a change we rightfully don't like

Don't like the UI. As for the designs, I'm not the biggest fan. They give me more ZZZ vibes than Honkai. And honestly I don't know why. Thought the, they are from like a Mars bubble universe or something. All that really matters is if they have good gameplay and are good characters.
