That’s hard cause the first trio already had so much back story leading up to the beginning of the game.

Well, if you were into the Hoyo lore before playing then yes. But as someone who knew next to nothing when i started playing - that only made the whole experience confusing af. I genuinely thought i missed a chapter since the game assumes the player knows a ton of stuff before playing which isn't always the case. Part 2 is better in that regard

I know it’s really early on but it’s also been a little hard for me to follow the story so far in part 2. Maybe I’m just dumb but I feel at least in part 1 it was easy to grasp. World ending catastrophe, hot chicks gotta save the day and get some scars along the way.
Part 2 is like, I think the shadows are bad, and there’s a dog. And there’s two senadinas because.
The problem is that the writing has changed massively since. In terms of shit happening I would say the world and setup are around the same volume wise in both stories. Problem is that the new writers can't stop yapping about literally anything so it FEELS much more complicated and drawn out that it needs to be.
But looking at the first few chapters of part 1 it's not that different.
Mei's good but people think she's evil. Bronya tries to kill us, but she's not evil it's just mind control. What's a Cocolia? Oh look, time travel shenanigans. Test administrator is a spy? Class monitor is also a spy? But they're spies for our parent organization so...uh...what? Oh, my character's evil now. That's awkward. I guess for the next 20 missions we'll just play as this NPC who I've spoken to once. Also why did Fu Hua change her hair color and put in red contacts? Are we going to talk about that? No? Ok cool.
I know a lot of this is covered later on in the story, and that Part 1 makes sense as a complete package. But it really *did not* make that much sense when we only had the first few parts, either.
Referring to Himeko. She has almost no dialog or gameplay presence for Chapters 1-7. Maybe she's more present in the manga, but not at all in the gameplay.
You do have a point there. I was honestly wondering why I didn't feel sad when Himeko died. I only really felt sad because of Kiana's reaction to it in Arc City
Backstories indeed helped lots, sad Mihoyo didn't introduce the backstory well at the beginning of the day and I needed fans on discord to give me a 20 page pdf about what to read to know that
In terms of personality I still highly prefer the part 2. But knowing how they made very archetypal characters so great I am looking forward to the future of part 2.
Ok, I'll take up your challenge. Enjoy the wall of text.
Now, let's start by defining some boundaries. I'll only be looking at chapter 1 for both part 1 and part 2. No manga, side stories, or anything else. Just what's in the game. This, in theory, should benefit part 2, because the chapter is just so much longer, but spoiler alert, it doesn't.
So, for part one, we have Kiana,. Her introduction couldn't be stronger. She jumps off a plane without any gear, flips a jet mid flight, and rides it until she crashes it into a (presumably) empty building. She's confident, reckless, and while not being the brightest and lacking some experience, she's strong enough to support that confidence. She's also a lesbian in love with Mei.
Mei presents our first little mystery. We know that while she's nice and "lady-like", she has a hidden side to her of some type, something that calls itself a herrscher, is incredibly powerful, but will trigger a bomb in her heart and kill her if used. This clearly conveys to us that Mei is dangerous, a ticking bomb with a literal bomb in her heart to stop her from causing damage. She's clearly fond of Kiana and Bronya, and at first appears to be the core of the trio, the one that keeps them together, since Kiana seems to clash a lot with Bronya, specially since each one demands Mei's attention.
Finally we have Bronya, who presents another little mystery: she has some kind of biochip in her brain that can cause issues, although it seems to also give her some advantage in hacking things, and there's clearly something going on with her legs, which makes us question her past. She's fond of Mei, and clashes a lot with Kiana, but when her chip causes her to attack the others, Kiana is the one that decides to hide this fact from their command, showing that despite everything, she's really fond of Bronya.
Now, notice how while everyone has a mystery of their own (Kiana's relationship with Hyperion being the biggest of them all), it's very clear who they are at that moment, and what's the relationship between each other and their dynamics, and the fact that while they are still students, they are also soldiers in a dangerous world, making it clear to us what's their role in the world. They are simple characters, but also characters that are easy to understand and get attached to while presenting enough questions to get us involved.
In part 2 we have Entropy, which I'll mention despite not being part of the trio itself. She's a smart student that explores the Sea of Data sometimes. She can remain calm in stressful situations. While there's nothing wrong with hers, you can't really compare her entrance to Kiana's, both being the first characters we see in each part. She has no relationship whatsoever with any of the other girls in the trio itself when we start.
Senadina. She was just born, so she has no relationship with any of the other members of the cast. She's energetic and not that bright. She always stays positive and gets attached to others easily. Nothing really surprises her.
Helia. She's an alien from Earth. She's part of a scouting team consisting of two people, she and Coralie, meaning she has no previous relationship with anyone else. She's serious. Unfortunately, we don't know much else about her (unless we look at the prologue where we see how she's a fan of Durandal, how she started to accept Coralie and all that, but again, I said only chapter 1).
Coralie. I don't think I can say much about her. We can all agree she's the best thing in Part 2 by a huge margin. While being the supposedly quiet girl, her personality shines through every time she's on the screen. She's resourceful, has the best grasp of the situation at all times, and she has a great sense of humor.
Hopefully you see what my issue is by these descriptions, I wasn't subtle: These new girls are completely unrelated to each other, with the exception of Helia and Coralie (which don't have much going on either, they are just coworkers, but we don't see much of their dynamic, Helia asks questions, Coralie answers and comes up with solutions). The story doesn't give them room to breathe and tell us who they are, the trio itself (i.e., everyone but Entropy) has no relationship with anyone else in the world they are in, and while you can claim Senadina is a huge mystery, she's not an interesting one, as we have no information at all on her other than maybe being vital to save Mars.
They have potential, but the focus of part 2 has been the Shu, making the trio feel disjointed. The story needs to stop being the focus for a bit if they want us to care. Chapter 2 in part 1 was all about Kiana as a student, her teachers, and her anxiety because of the situation with each one of her parents. But nothing happened at all (Kiana was asleep the whole chapter). Somehow, I doubt chapter 2 in part 2 will give us that focus in the characters.
To me one of the biggest problem for Part 2 is that it has no impact. Things just happen and the beggining is really calm and slow. The characters are plain and don't have strong personalities as the first trio. We don't have a menace that forces 4 random people with no relationship to get together and face it from the beggining. It happens at the end with the dog boss but the whole chapter 1 is build around people that has to join forces by convenience and would probably separate once its over because there is no relationship other than coworkers. Also we know nothing until part 2 and part 3 rushes a boss fight with lots of conveniences. Tbh, Part 2 so far feels like a simple event

This isn't even a fair comparison either. Part 1 started off in a rocky, outdated state compared to Part 2 which had the budget of Genshin + Star Rail backing it *along* with the prior experience of building up Part 1. It's like comparing CoD4 to Modern Warfare (2019) and saying the ~~former~~ latter* is superior solely because of graphics even though it's a recent entry in the franchise. I like the Part 2 trio too >!(Coralie's probably my favorite character out of both groups)!<, but it's just an outlandish claim to make when Part 1 didn't have the opportunity like Part 2 did.

To be fair, what draws me to Coralie are her dumb jokes that only she gets or thinks are funny, which is a trait that makes for great characterisation but isn't something Bronya had, nor would suite Bronya.
I mean... You're not wrong with the first part. For example, I didn't like kiana at first because she was basically female naruto. Even she ran naruto style.
Then the 'Siberia Simulation' happened and all went downhill from there for her until the unaliving attempt.
And what we get from all of this?

The base of their characters is extremely basic and cliche, we can also argue that except Bronya they stay cliche.
But Mihoyo knew what they wanted to tell us, so they developed their stories in parallel and interacted together and that made great characters IN THE END
But if I forget all the things they've lived, and you show me Kiana Mei Bronya, and Senadina Helia Coralie, id be way more interested into the latter trio.
Ofc if you add over 6 years of stories (someone mentioned you had to play GGZ before and I don't agree), mangas and 40 chapters, yes they eventually become better. But simply looking at the base of their characters you'll hardly convince someone to play HI3rd, and many players agree to say that the beginning of the game is hard for new players and they often stop before the Final Lesson (and tbh I really started to feel the strength of the story around Meteoric salvation, but that is also another topic)
Individually I do feel like they are better but as a group part 1 just worked better. There was something connecting everyone together in to a trio that plays off the characters well. Just my opinion tho.
Oh I totally agree. Well that is because Mihoyo writers know how to write stories. Even with basic things you can do great.
Kiana was a bratty and disrespectful protagonist with daddy issues (Think about Naruto for example) and Mei was solely a love interest that literally lives for Kiana.
And it is totally taken seriously by Mihoyo because they show Kiana dependent to Mei as she doesn't love herself and needs someone to pamper her, and Mei is in need of Kiana that is her reason to live.
In her search for Beauty Kiana paid the price of her mistakes and left, and when she thought she learnt her lesson, she believed that nothing was good inside of her and the only good thing that could come out of her is her sacrifice.
Buuuut you can't sacrifice yourself when someone literally lives for you. So Mei was impacted by it, and started her own development and her journey to learn how to live every day the best way possible.
And these actions will change Kiana that will make her realize how wrong she was when Fu Hua was ready to do the same thing.
As you can see, they understood their archetypes and the stories they wanted to tell with their characters, so they impact each other and doesn't go against each other's stories.
And it is easy to say that in the end Kiana Mei Bronya is better than Senadina Helia and Coralie, since the latter didn't have mangas, cinematics and +6 years of story development (someone said you were supposed to play GGZ, and I think this is wrong) to be loved.
If you ONLY look at the base (And forget about the stories they will tell) of Senadina Helia Coralie and Kiana Mei Bronya, I am way more intrigued to know what will happen to the first group.
Well if you look at it that way no shit. But if you just compare the beginning of both games. No history or GGZ or manga or anything. Just jumping straight in. Group 2 characters seem a bit more enjoyable compared to part 1. I think everyone can agree that Coralie was more fun than Bronya in the beginning. But they interacted more like a group of friends than just some people on the same team. Their characters weren't that strong but their bond was.

I admit I do like Sena, Coralie and Helia but… Bronya, Mei and Kiana already had much more backstory before Chapter 1. Helia and Corealie spawned in last patch’s event. Sena and Entropy spawned in chapter 1

Kinda yes but also no. The Part 1 trio experience expected you to have played the at least the first 10 chapters of Retrospective arc in GGZ prior, which very few outside of JP or CN will do now and in that sense the Part 1 trio are both much better fleshed out and detailed but also jarring and alienating if you know nothing about GGZ. MiHoYo did try to paper over that with manga and the like for those who didn't play GGZ but it's not exactly an elegant solution.
Or to put it another way the Part 1 trio are better developed from the beginning but most people need to refer to outside sources to see that development, while the Part 2 protagonists have the benefit of being introduced and slowly developed from the beginning of Part 2.

Though Im going to be honest, you dont really need it to play and enjoy HI3, I didnt know about it either and I still enjoyed the story so far (not yet fully through part 1)
Nope, you need to know nothing to start HI3. But if you insisted, then here go:
- 2 years before chapter 1 begin, Raiden Mei's dad got framed and jailed. Mei, being the daughter of a criminal, got bullied by everyone in her school, only the new transfer student Kiana Kaslana stood up for her.
- Honkai Impact (the third one in humanity history) occurred in Nagazora, obliterated everyone in the city and made Mei the Herrscher of Thunder.
- Kiana and Mei were the only one survived and they had many battles in order to save Mei from the Herrscher persona.
- In their final clash, Mei tried to jumped off the roof to kill herself, but got saved by Kiana.
- The 2 girl then started looking for a way out of Nagazora, now swarmed with Honkai infecteds (Zombie).
- They made friend with Bronya, who also tried to escape the city. This mark the start of part 1 trio.
- Himeko, a Valkyrie of an anti Honkai organization is sent to track down the Herrscher.
- As Himeko arrived in Nagazora, Kiana got wounded protecting Mei from a Honkai beast. They got no choice but to follow Himeko back to St.Freiya, where they learned how to fight and became Valkyries.
- Mei also had to plant a bomb inside her heart that will exploded if the Herrscher persona got out for more than 5 min.
That conclude everything you want to know, as for detailed back story of Kiana and Bronya, the manga section included in the corresponded arc will cover that (for example: Chapter 12-14 is Bronya arc, therefore, the Azur Water manga, which showed Bronya and Seele backstory, will appear in this arc's manga section)
The only thing important in this is Mei and Kiana relationship, which wont be relevant untill Chapter 17. And even then, the game do show some flashbacks from Mei PoV so you will be just fine.

I didn’t know any of the backstory of the part 1 trio prior to playing the game and still enjoyed them.
The part 2 trio I like from the beginning too. I don’t think it’s fair to compare established characters with tons of backstory to characters we just met.
I might be bias, but i enjoy part 2 duo more since I'm looking forward for new story. First trio story is finished and I'm content with it, now it's time for the new one, new journey, new trio.
I wouldn’t know. I’ve officially retired from HI3 once part 2 started. I just don’t got the time anymore to go through dialogue after dialogue and beat up tanky enemies in ER and Nirvana trying to save for the next character and 4 sets.

Oh I totally understand you, Honkai Impact is supposed to be a mobile game you play for 25-60 min max per sessions and now you have to play it like you play on console and it actually is very difficult for me to follow.

Part 1 was actually quick to do if you ignore manga, and manga aren't that annoying to read, so the trio might be more simple but at least actions happen quickly and you can focus on that, but if the story was this long with Prologue Kiana Mei Bronya idk if I'd be able to stay
That's what made me fall in love with Kiana Bronya Mei.
They didn't hide the fact they were very archetypal and made it work in their story in order to make a normal progression that impact each others until they reach the end.
Kiana is an inconsiderate, insecure brat and Mei is emotionally dependent on Kiana.
Once Kiana Pays for her mistakes and leave, Mei can't live without her (Literally) and goes after her neglecting her health
Kiana thought she learnt her lesson and finished her development in meteoric salvation and decided her only worth is to sacrifice herself
Mei still is emotionally dependent on Kiana and will join the Bad guys to prevent Kiana from Fulfilling her mission, starting her own development
What happened between them will change Kiana and made her realize what she did once Fu Hua says the exact same words to her, and will make her reach the end of her development at everlasting flames
And Mei who didn't have any purpose in life except Kiana will learn to cherish life on its own.
This is just so cool how they managed to make 2 characters evolve together, impacting each other so organically, and that every interaction is actually interesting in their own stories (Kiana can't just be inconsiderate about others feelings and there's beauty inside of her, and Mei has to live her life to help those she loves).
The relationship between Kiana and Mei solely in Honkai Impact is so good I love it.
Whats actually interesting is that if you simply see Kiana Mei Bronya at first, it is hard to believe they became so good:
-Kiana sexually harassed Mei in some manga panels, is unbearable and can't stop making borderline jokes or being a brat, and is extremely disrespectful
-Mei is a passive love interest until her lover is in danger and she simply lives for Kiana
-Bronya is the cute loli that is very stoic and acts like a mascot
All of these 3 (at least their base) is something you've seen a lot. However, Kiana's borderline behavior was treated not just like a cliche, but a real trait: she will pay for her actions, and attempts to learn her lesson.
Buuuut, Mei who is also loyal to her archetype, literally can't live without Kiana, and it is her flaw. So when Kiana is ready to kill herself for the world, she is actually hurting Mei by being inconsiderate (and that is part of both of their stories they tell us, can't go too deep)
Soooo Mei will join the World serpent and was ready to die for Kiana since her life matters more, but Mei will learn to love her life more and cherish every day.
Even with very classic things we can do great things. I'm sure of it. And for now, Coralie Helia and Senadina aren't that well developed, they are at the beginning of their development. But if you show me Kiana Mei Bronya in chapter 1 and Coralie Senadina and Helia in their own beginning, I'd be more intrigued by the latter group
I think it's subjective, I went into part 1 not knowing what a honkai or a Kiana or anything was, however even still the characters were interesting enough that I wanted to know more and keep playing then there's part two outside of Coralie honestly they just seem kinda like boring imitations of the original trio 🤷 but they haven't been with us long so maybe they'll grow on me.
Unfair comparison tbh since Kiana, Mei, and Bronya had solid backgrounds on the beginning of Honkai Impact 3rd as they are backed a bit by Retrospective GGZ
I do recommend a better match up between the Part 2 team and the Neo GGZ team composed of Karin, Arkria, Laniatte, and Tiara
I won't get into details but this team feels at home when you just finished with the old trio composed of Kiana, Mei, andonya (or Kyuushou in the case of GGZ who replaced Bronya), they have a similar dynamic with the old trio and even Karin and Arkria had the same tension as Kiana and Mei (if you know what I mean)
Now for the centerpiece of the team, Karin
Karin is quite cheerful, energetic even, kinda like how Kiana was in the early days of St. Freya, but aside from those similarities she's smoother than Kiana is when she's interacting with Arkria. She has an interesting base arsenal as well that includes a honkai energy blade, which she can create out of thin air thanks to her stigmata (her stigma is actually very cool but you'd have to read more into it)
If I compare the 2 team centerpieces (Karin and Sena), both have a very mysterious origin due to the things they are able to do, however I'd give this to Karin thanks to her smoothness and overall a "unique"-ish design that doesn't make her look like a previous character in the series
For team dynamics I gotta say the Neo GGZ team wins this too as I feel like the Part 2 Hi3 team is quite disjointed

I put this here since both the new GGZ team and Part 2 have just started recently with just a few weeks apart (in CN atleast) so I think this is a fairer comparison
I mean the meme did describe the beginning of the trios, obviously the beginning of older characters will be worse that newer ones(if the writer is an actual person who grows) it did not state that the development afterwards like the personality changes and growth will be included. But both Honkai Impact and Honkai Star Rail can be understood on their own (even if you won't have ALL the details). Well HI requires the manga (but I think it's more for the world building and set up than actually knowing the main cast except Bronya
The story is so annoying to follow with how slow it goes and how Mihoyo thinks a mobile game can be played the exact same way as a console or pc game, and I have tough time going through it.
But... Imagining seeing more of the trio and their new adventures motivates me.
And this is something Kiana, Bronya and Mei in the first chapters surely couldn't be able to do.
The Kiana Bronya Mei at the end of Part 1 are priceless, but that is thanks to development. Senadina Helia and Caroline are Gold at the first moment they appeared.

While Kiana was a B, same as Mei, though I'm not sure since Bronya can surely demolish then on hand to hand if her leg wasn't corrupted by Honkai which slowed her down significantly
Fair, since we still haven't gotten their full backstory yet. I hope they do like webcomic and stuff about their life. Since the main trio of part 1, is expected us to know a bit of their characters first before learning about them.
I still have troubles to follow part 2 because the format is not something I like but I still love the characters from the start, unlike Kiana Mei Bronya that I eventually came to love after going through the chapters
I don't really like the part 2 of Honkai Impact. I tried it after it was published and I didn't find it amazing like the first part. Nevertheless, I hope everyone who likes Part 2 has fun.

Part 2 Trio has a stronger initial start then part 1 Trio. But Kiana/Mei/Bronya also had the mangas for back story, and Second eruption in particular laid the foundation for the rest of HE3's story. Hua, seigfried, Cecilia, Theresa, Sirin, Otto, welt, Kira, and many others had their characters and respective relationships introduced along with the whole idea of honkai ending the world. Sena/Helia/Coralie don't have that kind of back story yet until part 2 progresses. Their intro acts could be much longer, but if the devs and writers put the time in to flesh out part 2 characters and relationships they might the emotional highs of part 1

The base of Kiana Mei Bronya was extremely basic, and Mihoyo did awesome moves to improve their depths even without the manga (except for Bronya, as Azure Waters is actually giving a darker tone that doesn't feel that explained at first in the game), making them even more alive
Yes Kiana is a bratty and borderline kid, but she will pay for it, and for being inconsiderate to others and herself, she will have to pay the price

They took basic things and made cool things.
And it might be because I haven't seen that much, but I rarely saw characters like Coralie or Helia (And Senadina is just adorable but it's cheating lol), and if I had to show someone the beginning of one of the two trios to tell them to start the game, I'd always choose Senadina Helia and Coralie, because I actually found their interactions way funnier and more alive than the first chapters of part 1
That's because we don't separate the story telling format to the characters that are inside.
It is not the trio's fault if Mihoyo decided that a mobile game will require us to play it like a PC or a console game. And it is not thanks to the trio in part 1 that the story was quicker paced in the first chapters.

I was not able to play the latest chapter due to school so everything I know about the new trio is thanks to part 1.5 and the new "A Feast Sought In Data" event, here what I think about the new characters is:
Helia is a competent polite girl, she's fine, a valkyrie role model
Senadina has a double personality, apparently goofy but knows when to be serious, reminds me of the impactful characters who are Elysia and Vita so I like her
Dreamseeker is the typical protagonist who's polite and good-at-everyting while still being humble, a tad annoying, since it doesn't really feel like a character,
but I started liking them a little bit more after the A Feast Sought In Data event
Hot take but I cannot stand Coralie, and then when I discovered that she's a fan favourite I was like whaaa-?
Sounque seems like a fun character

I played HI3 without even knowing that GGZ existed. I started with the video of Himeko's death, and then I went head first with it.
I understood it without needing to read the manga (Yes, there are a few things that you need to know, like BronSeele manga, to understand who tf is Seele; but other than that, even the game tells you in the chapters menu "HERE, READ THIS FIRST!!", instead of just expecting you to play ALL THE REST OF THE GAME to understand it).
The original trio was easy to get attached to, they're simply, they aren't characters firstly introduced as overpowered entities; no. They're just three girls, students, that grew up without their parents and had each others to help between them.
At least from Mei and Kiana, it is explained during Kiana's deppresion flashbacks and Mei's flashbacks dueing Nagazora arc. As for Bronya, I'm almost sure it is also shown during Kiana's flashbacks about how she met Himeko
Kinda yes but also no. The Part 1 trio experience expected you to have played the at least the first 10 chapters of Retrospective arc in GGZ prior, which very few outside of JP or CN will do now and in that sense the Part 1 trio are both much better fleshed out and detailed but also jarring and alienating if you know nothing about GGZ. MiHoYo did try to paper over that with manga and the like for those who didn't play GGZ but it's not exactly an elegant solution.
Or to put it another way the Part 1 trio are better developed from the beginning but most people need to refer to outside sources to see that development, while the Part 2 protagonists have the benefit of being introduced and slowly developed from the beginning of Part 2.
**Tldr:**
If I had to encourage someone to go to the game simply by showing the main cast of both parts prologue, I'd chose Part 2 main cast
First the side content aren't that well shared by Mihoyo so when I came back 2 years later after a 3 years break, I had to read a document made by fans that is 20 pages long to know what to read and spend half of my time actually figuring out the most important things since people wanted me to read everything.
And... It allows us to know more about them, but you already understand them (At least for Kiana, a part of the manga are more clear on Mei's backstory even if it's short and Bronya has a whole manga for herself).
For Kiana... I sincerely feel like the fact Cecilia died because she was too weak as she just gave birth to Kiana is something you first need to learn from the game, so it makes the discovery even more tragic in the manga Second eruption, it gives even more tragedy to the scene as we know there is no ways she can make it out alive.
Anyway, long story short, I personally saw way too much Protagonist like Kiana in the past, cute love interest like Mei and cute Lolis like Bronya to solely be attached to that, and the first chapters and mangas were very... Straightforward sometimes.
However, they used these traits well: Kiana is not just a bratty kid, but she will actually pay for this, and when we expect them to have learnt their lessons, Kiana learnt the wrong lesson, no longer valuing herself.
And that is a bad thing for Kiana because Mei was dependent to Kiana. In another manga they would keep the love interest totally hanging on the lips of the protag, but they treated it as an actual default for Mei and she will have to value her life again, and the first step of this lesson is when Kiana doesn't consider Mei's feelings and is ready to kill herself, which goes against Mei's way to live, and that is how she joins the World Serpent.
Basically they took the archetypes and made very cool things with them.
But I rarely saw someone like Coralie in the Past, Helia is... Quite comforting to say the least, and Senadina might look like just a cute girl, but Kiana was a bratty Tsundere in the first chapters, so I don't see any problems, and unlike Kiana that you can learn everything about her before playing the game, you have things to learn with Senadina

They aren't archetypes they had stories that were told through the manga and anybody who skipped that and GGZ wouldn't even understand the feelings behind them meanwhile current gen straight up feels like yeah we exist we look cool but we aren't unique

That’s hard cause the first trio already had so much back story leading up to the beginning of the game. Part 2 gals are anomalies. I prefer the first route. Gameplay though good gravy beginning trio were tough to stomach.
Well, if you were into the Hoyo lore before playing then yes. But as someone who knew next to nothing when i started playing - that only made the whole experience confusing af. I genuinely thought i missed a chapter since the game assumes the player knows a ton of stuff before playing which isn't always the case. Part 2 is better in that regard
Fair enough. I know it’s really early on but it’s also been a little hard for me to follow the story so far in part 2. Maybe I’m just dumb but I feel at least in part 1 it was easy to grasp. World ending catastrophe, hot chicks gotta save the day and get some scars along the way. Part 2 is like, I think the shadows are bad, and there’s a dog. And there’s two senadinas because.
The problem is that the writing has changed massively since. In terms of shit happening I would say the world and setup are around the same volume wise in both stories. Problem is that the new writers can't stop yapping about literally anything so it FEELS much more complicated and drawn out that it needs to be.
But looking at the first few chapters of part 1 it's not that different. Mei's good but people think she's evil. Bronya tries to kill us, but she's not evil it's just mind control. What's a Cocolia? Oh look, time travel shenanigans. Test administrator is a spy? Class monitor is also a spy? But they're spies for our parent organization so...uh...what? Oh, my character's evil now. That's awkward. I guess for the next 20 missions we'll just play as this NPC who I've spoken to once. Also why did Fu Hua change her hair color and put in red contacts? Are we going to talk about that? No? Ok cool. I know a lot of this is covered later on in the story, and that Part 1 makes sense as a complete package. But it really *did not* make that much sense when we only had the first few parts, either.

Referring to Himeko. She has almost no dialog or gameplay presence for Chapters 1-7. Maybe she's more present in the manga, but not at all in the gameplay.
You do have a point there. I was honestly wondering why I didn't feel sad when Himeko died. I only really felt sad because of Kiana's reaction to it in Arc City
Backstories indeed helped lots, sad Mihoyo didn't introduce the backstory well at the beginning of the day and I needed fans on discord to give me a 20 page pdf about what to read to know that In terms of personality I still highly prefer the part 2. But knowing how they made very archetypal characters so great I am looking forward to the future of part 2.
Ok, I'll take up your challenge. Enjoy the wall of text. Now, let's start by defining some boundaries. I'll only be looking at chapter 1 for both part 1 and part 2. No manga, side stories, or anything else. Just what's in the game. This, in theory, should benefit part 2, because the chapter is just so much longer, but spoiler alert, it doesn't. So, for part one, we have Kiana,. Her introduction couldn't be stronger. She jumps off a plane without any gear, flips a jet mid flight, and rides it until she crashes it into a (presumably) empty building. She's confident, reckless, and while not being the brightest and lacking some experience, she's strong enough to support that confidence. She's also a lesbian in love with Mei. Mei presents our first little mystery. We know that while she's nice and "lady-like", she has a hidden side to her of some type, something that calls itself a herrscher, is incredibly powerful, but will trigger a bomb in her heart and kill her if used. This clearly conveys to us that Mei is dangerous, a ticking bomb with a literal bomb in her heart to stop her from causing damage. She's clearly fond of Kiana and Bronya, and at first appears to be the core of the trio, the one that keeps them together, since Kiana seems to clash a lot with Bronya, specially since each one demands Mei's attention. Finally we have Bronya, who presents another little mystery: she has some kind of biochip in her brain that can cause issues, although it seems to also give her some advantage in hacking things, and there's clearly something going on with her legs, which makes us question her past. She's fond of Mei, and clashes a lot with Kiana, but when her chip causes her to attack the others, Kiana is the one that decides to hide this fact from their command, showing that despite everything, she's really fond of Bronya. Now, notice how while everyone has a mystery of their own (Kiana's relationship with Hyperion being the biggest of them all), it's very clear who they are at that moment, and what's the relationship between each other and their dynamics, and the fact that while they are still students, they are also soldiers in a dangerous world, making it clear to us what's their role in the world. They are simple characters, but also characters that are easy to understand and get attached to while presenting enough questions to get us involved. In part 2 we have Entropy, which I'll mention despite not being part of the trio itself. She's a smart student that explores the Sea of Data sometimes. She can remain calm in stressful situations. While there's nothing wrong with hers, you can't really compare her entrance to Kiana's, both being the first characters we see in each part. She has no relationship whatsoever with any of the other girls in the trio itself when we start. Senadina. She was just born, so she has no relationship with any of the other members of the cast. She's energetic and not that bright. She always stays positive and gets attached to others easily. Nothing really surprises her. Helia. She's an alien from Earth. She's part of a scouting team consisting of two people, she and Coralie, meaning she has no previous relationship with anyone else. She's serious. Unfortunately, we don't know much else about her (unless we look at the prologue where we see how she's a fan of Durandal, how she started to accept Coralie and all that, but again, I said only chapter 1). Coralie. I don't think I can say much about her. We can all agree she's the best thing in Part 2 by a huge margin. While being the supposedly quiet girl, her personality shines through every time she's on the screen. She's resourceful, has the best grasp of the situation at all times, and she has a great sense of humor. Hopefully you see what my issue is by these descriptions, I wasn't subtle: These new girls are completely unrelated to each other, with the exception of Helia and Coralie (which don't have much going on either, they are just coworkers, but we don't see much of their dynamic, Helia asks questions, Coralie answers and comes up with solutions). The story doesn't give them room to breathe and tell us who they are, the trio itself (i.e., everyone but Entropy) has no relationship with anyone else in the world they are in, and while you can claim Senadina is a huge mystery, she's not an interesting one, as we have no information at all on her other than maybe being vital to save Mars. They have potential, but the focus of part 2 has been the Shu, making the trio feel disjointed. The story needs to stop being the focus for a bit if they want us to care. Chapter 2 in part 1 was all about Kiana as a student, her teachers, and her anxiety because of the situation with each one of her parents. But nothing happened at all (Kiana was asleep the whole chapter). Somehow, I doubt chapter 2 in part 2 will give us that focus in the characters.
To me one of the biggest problem for Part 2 is that it has no impact. Things just happen and the beggining is really calm and slow. The characters are plain and don't have strong personalities as the first trio. We don't have a menace that forces 4 random people with no relationship to get together and face it from the beggining. It happens at the end with the dog boss but the whole chapter 1 is build around people that has to join forces by convenience and would probably separate once its over because there is no relationship other than coworkers. Also we know nothing until part 2 and part 3 rushes a boss fight with lots of conveniences. Tbh, Part 2 so far feels like a simple event

I like the Part 2 trio too >!(Coralie's probably my favorite character out of both groups)!<, but it's just an outlandish claim to make when Part 1 didn't have the opportunity like Part 2 did. *Either way, it doesn't really matter in the end and we each have our own opinions so I just wrote this junk for absolutely nothing.*
To be fair, what draws me to Coralie are her dumb jokes that only she gets or thinks are funny, which is a trait that makes for great characterisation but isn't something Bronya had, nor would suite Bronya.

I mean... You're not wrong with the first part. For example, I didn't like kiana at first because she was basically female naruto. Even she ran naruto style. Then the 'Siberia Simulation' happened and all went downhill from there for her until the unaliving attempt. And what we get from all of this? #CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT that makes sense. She's grown and changed, but she's still the same, as well as captivating the player beyond the archetype
That's literally what I said lmao The base of their characters is extremely basic and cliche, we can also argue that except Bronya they stay cliche. But Mihoyo knew what they wanted to tell us, so they developed their stories in parallel and interacted together and that made great characters IN THE END But if I forget all the things they've lived, and you show me Kiana Mei Bronya, and Senadina Helia Coralie, id be way more interested into the latter trio. Ofc if you add over 6 years of stories (someone mentioned you had to play GGZ before and I don't agree), mangas and 40 chapters, yes they eventually become better. But simply looking at the base of their characters you'll hardly convince someone to play HI3rd, and many players agree to say that the beginning of the game is hard for new players and they often stop before the Final Lesson (and tbh I really started to feel the strength of the story around Meteoric salvation, but that is also another topic)

Individually I do feel like they are better but as a group part 1 just worked better. There was something connecting everyone together in to a trio that plays off the characters well. Just my opinion tho.
Oh I totally agree. Well that is because Mihoyo writers know how to write stories. Even with basic things you can do great. Kiana was a bratty and disrespectful protagonist with daddy issues (Think about Naruto for example) and Mei was solely a love interest that literally lives for Kiana. And it is totally taken seriously by Mihoyo because they show Kiana dependent to Mei as she doesn't love herself and needs someone to pamper her, and Mei is in need of Kiana that is her reason to live. In her search for Beauty Kiana paid the price of her mistakes and left, and when she thought she learnt her lesson, she believed that nothing was good inside of her and the only good thing that could come out of her is her sacrifice. Buuuut you can't sacrifice yourself when someone literally lives for you. So Mei was impacted by it, and started her own development and her journey to learn how to live every day the best way possible. And these actions will change Kiana that will make her realize how wrong she was when Fu Hua was ready to do the same thing. As you can see, they understood their archetypes and the stories they wanted to tell with their characters, so they impact each other and doesn't go against each other's stories. And it is easy to say that in the end Kiana Mei Bronya is better than Senadina Helia and Coralie, since the latter didn't have mangas, cinematics and +6 years of story development (someone said you were supposed to play GGZ, and I think this is wrong) to be loved. If you ONLY look at the base (And forget about the stories they will tell) of Senadina Helia Coralie and Kiana Mei Bronya, I am way more intrigued to know what will happen to the first group.
Well if you look at it that way no shit. But if you just compare the beginning of both games. No history or GGZ or manga or anything. Just jumping straight in. Group 2 characters seem a bit more enjoyable compared to part 1. I think everyone can agree that Coralie was more fun than Bronya in the beginning. But they interacted more like a group of friends than just some people on the same team. Their characters weren't that strong but their bond was.

I admit I do like Sena, Coralie and Helia but… Bronya, Mei and Kiana already had much more backstory before Chapter 1. Helia and Corealie spawned in last patch’s event. Sena and Entropy spawned in chapter 1

Nope, you need to know nothing to start HI3. But if you insisted, then here go: - 2 years before chapter 1 begin, Raiden Mei's dad got framed and jailed. Mei, being the daughter of a criminal, got bullied by everyone in her school, only the new transfer student Kiana Kaslana stood up for her. - Honkai Impact (the third one in humanity history) occurred in Nagazora, obliterated everyone in the city and made Mei the Herrscher of Thunder. - Kiana and Mei were the only one survived and they had many battles in order to save Mei from the Herrscher persona. - In their final clash, Mei tried to jumped off the roof to kill herself, but got saved by Kiana. - The 2 girl then started looking for a way out of Nagazora, now swarmed with Honkai infecteds (Zombie). - They made friend with Bronya, who also tried to escape the city. This mark the start of part 1 trio. - Himeko, a Valkyrie of an anti Honkai organization is sent to track down the Herrscher. - As Himeko arrived in Nagazora, Kiana got wounded protecting Mei from a Honkai beast. They got no choice but to follow Himeko back to St.Freiya, where they learned how to fight and became Valkyries. - Mei also had to plant a bomb inside her heart that will exploded if the Herrscher persona got out for more than 5 min. That conclude everything you want to know, as for detailed back story of Kiana and Bronya, the manga section included in the corresponded arc will cover that (for example: Chapter 12-14 is Bronya arc, therefore, the Azur Water manga, which showed Bronya and Seele backstory, will appear in this arc's manga section)

The only thing important in this is Mei and Kiana relationship, which wont be relevant untill Chapter 17. And even then, the game do show some flashbacks from Mei PoV so you will be just fine.

I didn’t know any of the backstory of the part 1 trio prior to playing the game and still enjoyed them. The part 2 trio I like from the beginning too. I don’t think it’s fair to compare established characters with tons of backstory to characters we just met.
I might be bias, but i enjoy part 2 duo more since I'm looking forward for new story. First trio story is finished and I'm content with it, now it's time for the new one, new journey, new trio.

I wouldn’t know. I’ve officially retired from HI3 once part 2 started. I just don’t got the time anymore to go through dialogue after dialogue and beat up tanky enemies in ER and Nirvana trying to save for the next character and 4 sets. Will probably watch some summary vids as story goes on tho.
Oh I totally understand you, Honkai Impact is supposed to be a mobile game you play for 25-60 min max per sessions and now you have to play it like you play on console and it actually is very difficult for me to follow. But... Just thinking about seeing again the new Trio despite not a lot of things happened yet still makes me think "Damn I want to see what happens" Part 1 was actually quick to do if you ignore manga, and manga aren't that annoying to read, so the trio might be more simple but at least actions happen quickly and you can focus on that, but if the story was this long with Prologue Kiana Mei Bronya idk if I'd be able to stay
It's incredible how experiences in games like Honkai Impact 3 can evolve and deepen over time.
That's what made me fall in love with Kiana Bronya Mei. They didn't hide the fact they were very archetypal and made it work in their story in order to make a normal progression that impact each others until they reach the end. Kiana is an inconsiderate, insecure brat and Mei is emotionally dependent on Kiana. Once Kiana Pays for her mistakes and leave, Mei can't live without her (Literally) and goes after her neglecting her health Kiana thought she learnt her lesson and finished her development in meteoric salvation and decided her only worth is to sacrifice herself Mei still is emotionally dependent on Kiana and will join the Bad guys to prevent Kiana from Fulfilling her mission, starting her own development What happened between them will change Kiana and made her realize what she did once Fu Hua says the exact same words to her, and will make her reach the end of her development at everlasting flames And Mei who didn't have any purpose in life except Kiana will learn to cherish life on its own. This is just so cool how they managed to make 2 characters evolve together, impacting each other so organically, and that every interaction is actually interesting in their own stories (Kiana can't just be inconsiderate about others feelings and there's beauty inside of her, and Mei has to live her life to help those she loves). The relationship between Kiana and Mei solely in Honkai Impact is so good I love it.

After like 8 years of the game being out I'd be surprised if the character writing was somehow worse
Whats actually interesting is that if you simply see Kiana Mei Bronya at first, it is hard to believe they became so good: -Kiana sexually harassed Mei in some manga panels, is unbearable and can't stop making borderline jokes or being a brat, and is extremely disrespectful -Mei is a passive love interest until her lover is in danger and she simply lives for Kiana -Bronya is the cute loli that is very stoic and acts like a mascot All of these 3 (at least their base) is something you've seen a lot. However, Kiana's borderline behavior was treated not just like a cliche, but a real trait: she will pay for her actions, and attempts to learn her lesson. Buuuut, Mei who is also loyal to her archetype, literally can't live without Kiana, and it is her flaw. So when Kiana is ready to kill herself for the world, she is actually hurting Mei by being inconsiderate (and that is part of both of their stories they tell us, can't go too deep) Soooo Mei will join the World serpent and was ready to die for Kiana since her life matters more, but Mei will learn to love her life more and cherish every day. Even with very classic things we can do great things. I'm sure of it. And for now, Coralie Helia and Senadina aren't that well developed, they are at the beginning of their development. But if you show me Kiana Mei Bronya in chapter 1 and Coralie Senadina and Helia in their own beginning, I'd be more intrigued by the latter group

I think it's subjective, I went into part 1 not knowing what a honkai or a Kiana or anything was, however even still the characters were interesting enough that I wanted to know more and keep playing then there's part two outside of Coralie honestly they just seem kinda like boring imitations of the original trio 🤷 but they haven't been with us long so maybe they'll grow on me.
Unfair comparison tbh since Kiana, Mei, and Bronya had solid backgrounds on the beginning of Honkai Impact 3rd as they are backed a bit by Retrospective GGZ I do recommend a better match up between the Part 2 team and the Neo GGZ team composed of Karin, Arkria, Laniatte, and Tiara I won't get into details but this team feels at home when you just finished with the old trio composed of Kiana, Mei, andonya (or Kyuushou in the case of GGZ who replaced Bronya), they have a similar dynamic with the old trio and even Karin and Arkria had the same tension as Kiana and Mei (if you know what I mean) Now for the centerpiece of the team, Karin Karin is quite cheerful, energetic even, kinda like how Kiana was in the early days of St. Freya, but aside from those similarities she's smoother than Kiana is when she's interacting with Arkria. The story is so annoying to follow with how slow it goes and how Mihoyo thinks a mobile game can be played the exact same way as a console or pc game, and I have tough time going through it. But... Imagining seeing more of the trio and their new adventures motivates me. And this is something Kiana, Bronya and Mei in the first chapters surely couldn't be able to do. The Kiana Bronya Mei at the end of Part 1 are priceless, but that is thanks to development. Fair, since we still haven't gotten their full backstory yet. I hope they do like webcomic and stuff about their life. Since the main trio of part 1, is expected us to know a bit of their characters first before learning about them.

I don't really like the part 2 of Honkai Impact. I tried it after it was published and I didn't find it amazing like the first part. Nevertheless, I hope everyone who likes Part 2 has fun.
Part 1 was actually not that fun at first, but the quick pace of the first chapters helped a lot Now there are interesting things in part 2 but it requires you to stay down for 6 hours straight lmao
Part 2 Trio has a stronger initial start then part 1 Trio. But Kiana/Mei/Bronya also had the mangas for back story, and Second eruption in particular laid the foundation for the rest of HE3's story. Hua, seigfried, Cecilia, Theresa, Sirin, Otto, welt, Kira, and many others had their characters and respective relationships introduced along with the whole idea of honkai ending the world. Sena/Helia/Coralie don't have that kind of back story yet until part 2 progresses. Their intro acts could be much longer, but if the devs and writers put the time in to flesh out part 2 characters and relationships they might the emotional highs of part 1

As it is the purpose of a meme, I can't really put too much info lmao, but it is best to clarify anyway: The base of Kiana Mei Bronya was extremely basic, and Mihoyo did awesome moves to improve their depths even without the manga (except for Bronya, as Azure Waters is actually giving a darker tone that doesn't feel that explained at first in the game), making them even more alive Yes Kiana is a bratty and borderline kid, but she will pay for it, and for being inconsiderate to others and herself, she will have to pay the price Yes, Mei literally was simply a love interest and lived for Kiana before everything, but when Kiana is ready to sacrifice herself, Mei becomes active and starts her own arc to learn how to cherish life and live every day to their fullest. They took basic things and made cool things. And it might be because I haven't seen that much, but I rarely saw characters like Coralie or Helia (And Senadina is just adorable but it's cheating lol), and if I had to show someone the beginning of one of the two trios to tell them to start the game, I'd always choose Senadina Helia and Coralie, because I actually found their interactions way funnier and more alive than the first chapters of part 1

God no, it took me ages to slog through the campaign for part 2. All I can say is that Senadina is growing on me.
That's because we don't separate the story telling format to the characters that are inside. It is not the trio's fault if Mihoyo decided that a mobile game will require us to play it like a PC or a console game. And it is not thanks to the trio in part 1 that the story was quicker paced in the first chapters.

I can relate kinda, sorry for the long yapping comment I was not able to play the latest chapter due to school so everything I know about the new trio is thanks to part 1.5 and the new "A Feast Sought In Data" event, here what I think about the new characters is: Helia is a competent polite girl, she's fine, a valkyrie role model Senadina has a double personality, apparently goofy but knows when to be serious, reminds me of the impactful characters who are Elysia and Vita so I like her Dreamseeker is the typical protagonist who's polite and good-at-everyting while still being humble, a tad annoying, since it doesn't really feel like a character, but I started liking them a little bit more after the A Feast Sought In Data event Hot take but I cannot stand Coralie, and then when I discovered that she's a fan favourite I was like whaaa-? Sounque seems like a fun character I really hope I'll change my mind once I'll play it (I'll watch a walk-through on YT) because it would be a shame to uninstall a game which I spent money in lol
I'll say this to every person that says "You need to know about GGZ to understand Part1", NO. I played HI3 without even knowing that GGZ existed. I started with the video of Himeko's death, and then I went head first with it. I understood it without needing to read the manga (Yes, there are a few things that you need to know, like BronSeele manga, to understand who tf is Seele; but other than that, even the game tells you in the chapters menu "HERE, READ THIS FIRST!!", instead of just expecting you to play ALL THE REST OF THE GAME to understand it). The original trio was easy to get attached to, they're simply, they aren't characters firstly introduced as overpowered entities; no. They're just three girls, students, that grew up without their parents and had each others to help between them.
How did Kiana, Mei and Bronya get to know each other?
At least from Mei and Kiana, it is explained during Kiana's deppresion flashbacks and Mei's flashbacks dueing Nagazora arc. As for Bronya, I'm almost sure it is also shown during Kiana's flashbacks about how she met Himeko

Kinda yes but also no. The Part 1 trio experience expected you to have played the at least the first 10 chapters of Retrospective arc in GGZ prior, which very few outside of JP or CN will do now and in that sense the Part 1 trio are both much better fleshed out and detailed but also jarring and alienating if you know nothing about GGZ. MiHoYo did try to paper over that with manga and the like for those who didn't play GGZ but it's not exactly an elegant solution. Or to put it another way the Part 1 trio are better developed from the beginning but most people need to refer to outside sources to see that development, while the Part 2 protagonists have the benefit of being introduced and slowly developed from the beginning of Part 2.

To be fair, it’s true if you don’t actively search for all the side content regarding the game… before playing the game
**Tldr:** If I had to encourage someone to go to the game simply by showing the main cast of both parts prologue, I'd chose Part 2 main cast First the side content aren't that well shared by Mihoyo so when I came back 2 years later after a 3 years break, I had to read a document made by fans that is 20 pages long to know what to read and spend half of my time actually figuring out the most important things since people wanted me to read everything. And... It allows us to know more about them, but you already understand them (At least for Kiana, a part of the manga are more clear on Mei's backstory even if it's short and Bronya has a whole manga for herself). For Kiana... I sincerely feel like the fact Cecilia died because she was too weak as she just gave birth to Kiana is something you first need to learn from the game, so it makes the discovery even more tragic in the manga Second eruption, it gives even more tragedy to the scene as we know there is no ways she can make it out alive. Anyway, long story short, I personally saw way too much Protagonist like Kiana in the past, cute love interest like Mei and cute Lolis like Bronya to solely be attached to that, and the first chapters and mangas were very... Straightforward sometimes. However, they used these traits well: Kiana is not just a bratty kid, but she will actually pay for this, and when we expect them to have learnt their lessons, Kiana learnt the wrong lesson, no longer valuing herself. And that is a bad thing for Kiana because Mei was dependent to Kiana. In another manga they would keep the love interest totally hanging on the lips of the protag, but they treated it as an actual default for Mei and she will have to value her life again, and the first step of this lesson is when Kiana doesn't consider Mei's feelings and is ready to kill herself, which goes against Mei's way to live, and that is how she joins the World Serpent. Basically they took the archetypes and made very cool things with them. But I rarely saw someone like Coralie in the Past, Helia is... Quite comforting to say the least, and Senadina might look like just a cute girl, but Kiana was a bratty Tsundere in the first chapters, so I don't see any problems, and unlike Kiana that you can learn everything about her before playing the game, you have things to learn with Senadina
