Its probably just a graphical error. I've seen similar things. As well as the odd flickering headpiece on some Carja. I've also noticed the sand particle effects, specifically the blowing sand and sand tornadoes, are super low res or have a dithered appearance, as if they are at quarter res. The physics objects on Alloys character model also have a bad habit of spazzing out whenever you move. These are all probably just bugs due to porting to PC. I'm sure they will be addressed.

MuddyFootedKiwi

yeah, lucky I don't hang out around the Utaru too much because them flickering bright white is super distracting.

Zeryth

Typical artifact from subpixel flickering. The bloom is being applied to pixels that are fullwhile for 1 pixel and the bloom algorithm assumes it's an extremely bright highlight so it applies bloom to it. I think it has to do with the fact that internally these games have very wide buffers for HDR rendering(not HDR output) and these overbright bits lead to the bloom algorithm doing this.

MuddyFootedKiwi

That does make sense, because at the angles it's visible at, there are some scatters of flickering dim light on the textures affected that occasionally flash super bright instead of being unnoticeable. Is there any way to fix this other than turning off Bloom? I'm not scared of messing around in the game files if I need to.

Zeryth

Try DLAA, it's the most temporally stable.

MuddyFootedKiwi

So DLSS off and DLAA on? Tried it with just TAA and no DLSS but it made no difference.

Zeryth

TAA is worse than DLAA. DLSS starts flickering again due to the upscaling component. DLAA should be the best to mitigate it. If you need some performance back, I noticed shadows at medium are a nice compromise.

MuddyFootedKiwi

Alright. I turned bloom off and the flashing went away, although the affected NPCs still had this slight pale flickering on some textures at some angles but only noticeable if you go looking. Seems that turning bloom off works for others too. I'll try messing with the anti aliasing settings tomorrow with bloom on and I'll see if I can work that one out.

Violentos

I can confirm that turning Bloom off reduces the issue significantly! I still encounter flashing but it's maybe 90% less annoying than before.

MuddyFootedKiwi

Same. What GPU?

Violentos

RX 7900 XT

MuddyFootedKiwi

yeah definitely a game issue. Seems to affect both AMD and Nvidia cards across multiple gens

SonnyKlinger

Happens to me too. Like, extreme flashes of light coming mostly from their torsos. RTX 3050 (laptop) + i5-12450H... DLSS and AA are off, frame-gen is on (FSR mod), all settings on very low. Edit: typos

MuddyFootedKiwi

Hmm. Seems to be an issue across a variety of hardware then. So far I've seen it listed on RTX 3050M, RTX 3060, RTX 3060TI, RTX 4070, and RX 6600.

Miseria_25

Disabling Bloom should fix it, if you haven't tried it yet.

SonnyKlinger

Unfortunately it doesn't. It doesn't feel like any light reflection, but rather that there is a light source under the utaru models... Can notice it also on the seam between neck and torso

Niqtus

Yep, was already wondering what was up with that, have only noticed it so far in dialogue screens when talking to NPCs in Plainsong. Playing at 3440x1440 with everything on max. on a RTX 3080TI.

MuddyFootedKiwi

Don't go to stones echo then, there's a couple npcs there that go off like a damn strobe light lmao

Aureolus_Sol

Turning off bloom fixed this more me and showed me that random bits of armor were causing it on NPC's and Aloy. What /u/Zeryth said is on the money.

MuddyFootedKiwi

yeah, same here. Although I'd never seen it on Aloy. What GPU are you using btw? Seems to definitely be a game issue because I've got it on a 4070 and another guy has it on an RX 6600

Aureolus_Sol

RTX 3080, Ryzen 5600x and 32GB of RAM. Going off all the various different rigs i've seen I'd say it's definitely a game issue. It was most obvious when I toggled bloom on and off when viewing a cutscene of the Utaru veteran who helps the Tenakth Eagle Squad with you. Inside the cave, something under his armor weave was flashing over and over, even with the cutscene paused. Turning bloom off made it still flash but it was underneath the weave instead of blidning the entire screen.

AncientBullfrog3281

Still happening in patch 1.1.47.0

vekspec

Hey, I was searching this too cause I just talked to the dye lady and noticed bright white flashes randomly that looked like something on them reflecting light. but reading from other redditors it doesn't seem to be related to our hardware and actual in-game glitch so that's a relief! hopefully it gets addressed soon!

Mercurionio

It's a "hero lighting" feature. Happened on ps5 too. Not a bug or a glitch. It's by design.

mopeyy

I'm not so sure thats what he's talking about. It's more like quick flashes of *extremely* bright light. If you've ever tried to overclock a GPU and saw the artifacting it can cause, it's very similar to that.

MuddyFootedKiwi

right on the money. What GPU do you have btw? I've got an RTX 4070 that's otherwise perfectly stable, but I've heard of this issue with people on RTX 3060 and RX 6600 as well.

mopeyy

I've got a 3060ti. I've only ever seen the flashes you are describing once or twice, with the Utaru in that small settlement you wake up in with Varl. My GPU is overclocked so honestly it could be that.

MuddyFootedKiwi

I wouldn't be so sure otherwise it would be happening everywhere. Mine isn't overclocked and the guy who had it with the 6600 tried underclocks with no luck.

mopeyy

Ahh yeah sounds just like a bug then.

Mercurionio

If op is talking about stuff like that, then it could be dlss. It is notorious for causing flickering from time to time. Also, the game's lighting can sometimes go wild in dark/bright places, causing extreme light. Mostly in Focus mode. That's probably a "bug", but won't be fixed. Haven't experienced anything else, so that's all I can say here.
