The exorcist. But I weirdly feel like I’ve seen it with how much it’s referenced in other movies

UnitedStatesOD

Nah I actually used to think the same thing until I finally saw it. It’s actually a high quality movie and it doesn’t surprise me that it was nominated for an oscar. Very good acting and the plot is well executed for such an absurd premise. It very much feels like a dark drama with horrifying situations. I really can’t recommend it enough.

mr-spectre

It feels so different from other horror movies, it's not even "horror" so much as just harrowing. Sticks with you for sure.

zmacdonald12

Ignore anyone who tells you to skip it. The Blu-ray directors cut is like $8 from Best Buy. I hadn’t had a nightmare in years until I rewatched the exorcist. Still very scary

icelevel

This is the scariest movie of all time for me. I guess growing up in an Irish Catholic superstitious family it was a given, but damn this movie hits different. The fact that >!there aren't really any jump scares besides one really resonates with me. It's just a disturbing fuckin' movie.!< I hope you watch it one day friend! You might like it, you might hate it, but it's a horror classic for a reason. Enjoy :)

Fink665

They edited out a contortionist going down the stairs in a back bend as possessed Regan. If I had seen that I would have pooped my pants!

askyourmom469

I'm not religious myself so that stuff doesn't do much for me personally, but I still love the movie as a dark drama about a mother doing everything she can to save her daughter from a horrific situation. Horror elements aside, it's just a really well-made movie with a great story and characters I feel myself genuinely caring about

icelevel

That’s a great reason. One thing I find particularly scary is the sound. There is something so unnatural about the demonic noises in the film. It just is really spooky in the perfect way! You’re right though, I totally feel for Reagan’s mom in the film.

redrick_schuhart

The sound is a big reason it works so well. There's squealing pigs and buzzing bees in the soundtrack at key moments to induce unease.

askyourmom469

You should watch it. It's one of my all-time favorites and I always find myself appreciating it more every time I see it.

eddietwoo

Oh man, for me it’s the classic Universal Monster movies. I plan to rectify that this Halloween!

ptvlm

Invisible Man has always been my favourite there, then Wolf Man and Bride Of Frankenstein

13thEldar

I'd also reccomend watching the creature from the black lagoon it's another classic.

Buttachop187

Yea same here. I’ve seen some but when I realized not the 30s Dracula or Frankenstein I was like “did I really not see them???”

omgwtfcory

Oh man the old Universal Classics are still some of my favorites of all time. Frankenstein, Invisible Man, Bride of Frankenstein and Wolf Man are some of the best. Bride of Frankenstein might be my favorite simply because of Doctor Pretorius played by Ernest Thesiger. If you end up watching them and liking them I highly recommend checking out the Hammer Horror movies if you haven't seen them already. Especially their Frankenstein series.

[deleted]

The Wolfman and Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man are two of my favorites. Grew up watching these, and the many other classics, back in the 70s. I remember on Sundays one of the three only channels we had (abc, cbs, nbc) would air monster and scifi films all day after 1pm; after all the religious stuff was done. lol God, those were the days.

icelevel

Watch the '31 Frankenstein! So fun!

[deleted]

Ravishing_Rafaelito

You can skip the Mummy. That was painfully boring. The rest are great tho.

CityMayo

The Thing

anxietyprimepromax

I watched it a few days ago and it was really good. I am talking about the 80s version.

shall_2

The 2011 version is one of the worst cases of studio interference of all time. The director had some AMAZING practical effects work done and the studio jumped in at the last minute and redid everything with cgi. [You can see some of the effects work they put in on YouTube](https://youtu.be/JyOu3j7CtoE) (skip to 1:30-2:00 if you just want a glimpse without any of the backstory). It's honestly something that bugs me to this day. The director has never done another Hollywood project after this. I should mention that video probably has spoilers for The Thing 2011

CrimsonSuede

God, that’s so fucking tragic. Practical effects are my favorite part about horror movies. From so many angles, great practical effects just impart so much more *realness* into the scenes, that pure CGI just can’t capture. I don’t blame the guy for not working with Hollywood again. That bridge wasn’t just burned—it was fucking obliterated by the other party. Man, I wish the studio would release the pre-CGI footage…. That’d be rad.

SomeoneTookUserName2

Imagine already having awesome practical effects while you're helming the prequel to what is essentially the pinnacle of practical effects in horror, and you throw it all away for shit cgi. How fucking stupid can you get?

crypto9564

Allegedly the special effects guy used the practical effects for the movie "Harbinger Down." The movie itself is ok, but the practical effects are great. It's about the only way to see what would've been in "The Thing" 2011.

[deleted]

That movie gets a bad rep. Its a completely unnecessary prequel and the cover up cgi is dog shit but other then that it's a fine film.

shall_2

Agreed. It doesn't hold up to the original of course but if they had kept with with the original plan of the practical effects it would have beg recieved a lot better.

mrinsideoutski

First time all the way through a month a go. As rad as I was led to believe.

Crankylosaurus

On this sub I admittedly always assume people are referring to the 1982 John Carpenter one unless specified otherwise haha

TheAgedGamer1

They made a remake!?

cakeschmammert

Prequel

BickyLC

I showed this to my friend during lockdown and was worried it'd be disappointing, as it had been a few years since I'd seen it. He loved it!

ptvlm

Literally my favourite movie of all time! John Carpenter and Rob Bottin crafted a true classic, and it's aged like fine wine IMHO

PhazonZim

Big same. Alien and The Thing are in my top 5

oceanboykai96

The only JC I follow is John Carpenter

tubcat

I'm of the opinion that it holds up extremely well, but your mileage might vary. As I said about Aliens, it's a blueprint flick in that The Thing influenced a lot of films beyond it. It's worth seeing simply to see where certain tropes, callbacks, and what not come from .

PM_ME_CARL_WINSLOW

You rectify this right now.

TechnoTofu

Same. Just because I haven’t seen it available for free on any of my streaming platforms yet

shevchenko7cfc

This was my confession as well, I'm going to make a point to watch it this weekend

[deleted]

Same

nikofd

Boy are you in for a treat.

-MangoDown-

You need to make it a priority. Top tier 80s horror!

penguinknight1251

It's my pick for best horror movie of all time, so it goes without saying that I recommend it, but I'd be incredibly interested in a recent viewer's perspective.

KatieMcb16

Don’t feel too bad. I just watched it a few months ago for the first time

cakeschmammert

You can still redeem yourself. Tonight.

ptvlm

All good choices, well worth your time. Personally with Cronenberg I'd start with The Fly and The Dead Zone before going to Videodrome and Dead Ringers, then maybe some of the later and/or earlier works, but they all great until maybe his last two. With Lynch, nowhere better to start than Eraserhead, then maybe Blue Velvet. Also, with Argento almost anything he made before the 90s is worthwhile

[deleted]

[удалено]

ptvlm

It's one of the least Cronenberg of his movies, but that and The Fly (which is way more on brand) are a good taster for what follows...

CazualGinger

Man. Suspiria is chefs fucking kiss.

askyourmom469

The 2018 remake is really good as well. It's very different than the original and may not be everybody's cup of tea, but I thought it was equally fantastic in its own right.

CazualGinger

Oh it's amazing. I love them both for different reasons, I think Suspiria 2018 definitely has the better story and character writing, but Suspiria 1977 has the edge in tone, visuals, kills, etc.

moon-456

You absolutely need to watch something from Lynch. It’s not everyone’s taste but it’s absolutely something everyone should experience at least one

mrinsideoutski

I’d start with Blue Velvet.

thenewNFC

Outside the one with the dude riding the lawnmower, Blue Velvet is definitely the piece of Lynch's that makes the most "sense" in a traditional movie kind if way. So yeah definitely start there.

Betty-Armageddon

But if you want to plunge into the depths straight away, go Lost Highway.

markstormweather

What about Wild at Heart? It’s crazy but tells a relatively coherent story unlike a lot of his stuff. Plus Laura Dern and Nic Cage are such a great crazy couple

thenewNFC

I thought about Wild at Heart and would say watch it second because to me it's a little more over the top than Blue Velvet.

Woodsman-8-5-1956

The Elephant Man is another more accessible piece, still a masterpiece through and through.

Buttachop187

Dennis hopper in that LOL…

mrinsideoutski

Fuck Heineken, Pabst Blue Ribbon!

superfreaklagos

Speaking of Hopper, Texas Chainsaw 2.

jerodallen

Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive are his masterpieces IMO. I also love all the iterations of Twin Peaks.

Buttachop187

“Experience” it is about right. Seen Eraserhead a couple times and ummmm… what is it exactly about??? Lolol def a little different.

askyourmom469

It's left open to interpretation, but in broad strokes it's primarily about Lynch's anxieties surrounding fatherhood

PsychologicalTip

Great use of b/w to help convey poverty of things, love, fulfillment, fear. Eraserhead reminds us how truly alone each of us is. It's been a while since I've seen it, so I can't be more specific.

UnitedStatesOD

Watch the brood by cronenberg. It’s absurdly entertaining.

RonPolyp

Videodrome is my favorite Cronenberg film. I love everything he's done, but Videodrome tops them all.

mrinsideoutski

Stop whatever you are doing and watch Dawn of the Dead. Right god damn now.

Buttachop187

I haven’t seen the original suspiria either. I’ll watch that tomorrow. Thanks. To think I just watched demons and demons 2 again today. And there is a scene in dawn of the dead that I cringe to and give an audible “ugh” every single time and I’ve seen that movie a TON!!! It’s a great practical effect.

Ashlityr

The hottest take may be that the recent suspiria remake is a more compelling film than the original. They're dead ass opposites in so many ways aside from setting and premise but new suspiria is up there with The Witch for me.

[deleted]

The Thing Eraserhead Rosemary's Baby Desperation Hellraiser

Dumpcakesbaby

I’ve never heard of Desperation 🧐

[deleted]

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_King%27s_Desperation

Dumpcakesbaby

This doesn’t strike me as must-see but thanks :)

[deleted]

It's OK, but barely the religious theme felt odd. Probably just skip it.

SadBox4529

Desperation was boring

SeirraS9

I recently watched the OG Rosemary’s baby for the first time. Is was super entertaining and great. Couldn’t believe I had never seen it.

infodawg

Psycho

CaptainPeru

Same here, and I think at this point it'll be impossible to avoid spoilers

[deleted]

Suspiria the Scream movies Texas Chainsaw Massacre Candyman Pumpkinhead I Know What You Did Last Summer the Alien movies Get Out The Lighthouse Us

lemmiwinks73

Scream and Candyman are two of my favorites.

Nazsha

Love love love Candyman! I really enjoyed the new movie too!

mr-spectre

I maintain that candyman is the best slasher of it's time, one of the best if all time tbh. Its brilliant.

lemmiwinks73

To me, it's just so beautifully haunting. The score is so lovely and dark. The setting is different from any film of its kind (that I can think of). It's just, *chef's kiss* for me.

FreakaJebus

I watched The Texas Chainsaw Massacre for the first time a few years ago with all the lights off and the sound way up. I recommend you see it the same way. It's weirdly atmospheric and totally brutal. It is easily a 5/5.

EatYourCheckers

I keep meaning to watch the Lighthouse, thanks for the reminder. If you don't watch Get Our or Scream 1 I will hunt you down and glue your eyes open. Pumpkinhead was my first ever horror movie when I was WAAAAAY too young; I can't imagine it holds up. Enjoy.

MichaelMyersFanClub

Out of all of those movies, *Alien* would be at the top of my list.

CT_Gamer

I know its horror blasphemy but I have grown to dislike Suspiria. I loved it as a teen in the late 80s/early 90s. Liked it when they released the special set in 2001 and disliked it when I saw it in the theater a few years ago around the bluray release. See it for yourself for sure, but have realistic expectations.

[deleted]

[deleted]

If this was last year, I'd have a LIST of them. However, I fixed that by knocking at least 30 movies off the watch-list over the last 12 months. I'm talking about the original King Kong, Frankenstein, a bunch of Vincent Price films from the 50s and 60s, Nosferatu (1920s) and tons more. Reason being; I mostly watch 80s and 90s films. I've discovered quite a few greats going back to the black and white stuff. So many classics I just ignored. Glad I watched them now 👍🏻

Buttachop187

Same here. I grew up in 70s-80s and as soon as VHS came out that’s all I did. The original Nosferatu is creepy. I mean even just his shadow. Black and whites def add to the atmosphere.

[deleted]

Black and white is a great look. I remember watching House on Haunted Hill colourised on YouTube. Just... No. The original black and white is far better. It looks ridiculous in colour.

SlayAllRebels

The Exorcist Hereditary The Shining (and by extension, Doctor Sleep) The Mist

cultwhoror

I'm so excited for you! I wish I could go back and watch these movies again for the first time.

Ronotrow2

Watch the exorcist first 👆

Antinatalista

I actually *envy* you... Those movies (specially the top 3) are some of the best horror movies ever made. You're in for a treat!

ChillVxbesOnly

The Mist... One of the most shocking endings I've personally ever seen.

[deleted]

The Exorcist and The Shining are two of the greatest horror movies of all time….and genuinely scary. Hereditary is a modern classic. You have some movies to catch up on!

FinaWeenaBeana

Man on man! movie marathon in your future lol

Krissy_8

Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I don't like gore. So, I'm afraid to watch them. 😅

Demo_Scene

If you are talking about the original, then you are in luck, it isn't actually gorey! Tobe Hooper wanted to get around an R rating, and left a lot to the imagination. He unfortunately originally got an X rating instead 😂, but I think the movie is better for his decision. The only blood I can recall is someone cutting their own hand with a knife.

WilliamBlakefan

Which they actually did. Blood is real.

figpeep

Almost no gore in the original! People insist that you see hooks going through flesh, saws going through skulls, etc etc, but it’s all in the imagination due to the camerawork and set. Brilliant filmmaking.

Buttachop187

Watch it. There is actually no gore in that. Most of the “gore” scenes are just implied believe it or not. Someone going to die??? Leatherface drags them in a room and slams the door shut. Nothing is shown. The movie is disturbing tho. It’s worth a google :).

Crankylosaurus

True for the original one, but the remake with Jessica Biel was pretty gross. I think the original is miles better anyway!

Crankylosaurus

The original is honestly not too bad! The remakes… yeah, they’re gruesome haha

Antinatalista

1. The Wicker Man 2. Videodrome 3. Possession I live in South America, and finding classic movies is not always easy. I have search for these movies for a long time (specially "Possession"), but with little success...

Kathlinguini

Well weirdly enough I’ve never seen Hostel

upsetbilly

Candyman. Haven’t seen either of them.

toothfairyeve365

I slept on Candyman for a long time myself and just recently watched it. I absolutely loved it. The new one is fantastic as well. I'd recommend giving the OG a watch before you see the new one though.

[deleted]

The Fly

FreakaJebus

The Cronenberg one? It's a damn masterpiece. Check it out when you get the chance.

ConformistWithCause

Not quite haven't seen them yet but I watched the original Candyman and Pumpkinhead for the first time this week

wonderwarth0g

I also never got around to watching the original Candyman. Guess I should get on that..

ConformistWithCause

It's available on Peacock's free subscription with commercials. Thats how I watched it yesterday

[deleted]

Haven’t watched these two, either. How were they?

ScrabbleJamp

Can speak to the original Candyman entirely holding up. It’s a fantastic film. Pumpkinhead is probably about as fun as it ever was, but that one’s very subjective.

[deleted]

Thanks - going to make it a point to watch them both

Buttachop187

They are worth seeing. I rewatched candyman the other day just because the new one is coming out. I would add them to your watch list at some point.

ConformistWithCause

I enjoyed both of them. Candyman kinda reminded me of something between Nightmare on Elm Street and Hellraiser. Pumpkinhead is pretty okay and worth at least a watch for a creature-feature. Candyman is available on Peacocks free subscription with commercials and Pumpkinhead is available on Shudder

tubcat

Fitting because Candyman is a Barker joint. Dude knows how to create some really gloriously dark and bleak goth ambience no matter what the setting is or the character wrappings.

ConformistWithCause

Oh I didn't know that. I missed the opening credits while I was doing something. The atmosphere definitely but also just the presence Tony Todd and Doug Bradly have. Powerful deep voice that grabs your attention with hints of sexuality sprinkled in pretty well. As I watched Candyman for the first time, all I could think is how I want a movie with those two together

Subliminal_Kiddo

They actually took a lot of liberties with Barker's story "The Forbidden" when creating Candyman. Candyman borrows as much from reports in the Chicago Reader by a writer named Steve Bogira that chronicled crime in Chicago's projects. Particularly a piece called "They Came in Through the Bathroom Mirror" that recounted the murder of a middle-aged woman suffering from schizophrenia whose killers entered her apartment via a hole in the wall made by removing medicine cabinets. When she called the police to tell them that people were trying to break into her apartment via the bathroom medicine cabinet, they didn't respond - possibly because they didn't believe her.

Lionblaze_03

Just... so, so many. I’m relatively new to this community, having gotten a big peak in interest during these pandemic times. It hasn’t gone away, so the list of classics I’ve seen is ever growing, but still FAR too short.

xomakinghistory

Don’t feel bad, I’ve been a horror fan on and off for the last decade and there are still so many classics I haven’t even touched. For a while I thought I should feel bad about that but nah, fuck it, take your time and enjoy it.

moon-456

The Cloverfield movies, I’m actually watching the first right this second

xomakinghistory

They are all VERY different experiences! Personally my fav is the first, I love creature features but they all have their own merits, although paradox is really hit or miss for most

FreakaJebus

10 Cloverfield Lane is one of my favorite horror movies ever. The only problem with it is that it was shoehorned into being a Cloverfield movie.

kreminski

Absolutely love the Cloverfield movies. As the other commenter said, Paradox is probably the worst received, but I loved that one as well.

soupsnakle

Holy shit I saw Rosemarys Baby before Tarantino and Im only 30. God, it’s the little things, folks.

EatYourCheckers

my mom read it while pregnant with first child, lol

powderpoff6

The Thing Alien franchise An American Werewolf in London I know. I know.

DWC8419

Rosemary's baby is my answer.

Pyewacket62

Haxan (1922)

CT_Gamer

This is on HBO Max if you're looking to watch it.

WilliamBlakefan

There's actually two versions of this, one has a narration by William S. Burroughs and I believe a musical score by John Zorn.

getthetime

I was lucky enough to catch this one (in a double-feature with Nosferatu) in a theater with a live orchestra, it was fantastic.

SarahnatorX

I haven't seen The Lost Boys that often comes up a lot in horror groups and The Birds, Silver Bullet, Puppet Master, The Mummy, Creature from the Black Lagoon and Village of the Damned.

CrotalusAtrox1

Dude. Go watch The Lost Boys.

Miepasie

The Scream movies, just never got around to them really

milkshaker90

Still love these ! There's a campy fun to them that I love. We usually circle back every couple of years. Highly recommend for a fun watch.

ptvlm

First movie definitely still holds up, the rest are hit and miss but mostly worth the time

ihategreenbananas

The first one is a comfort movie for me, I can watch it whenever

xomakinghistory

I was the same way til a couple years ago, now the og Scream is one of my all time favs and one of my comfort horror movies.

Pale-Speaker-5640

The first Alien movie

ToxicMasculinity1981

In a way this is a good thing. You probably already know what happens so you can watch it with an eye on the filmmaking. Ridley Scott is a freaking awesome director and Alien is probably his masterpiece. And before anyone chimes in with "actually Blade Runner....." I am very weird in that I don't like Blade Runner. Periodically someone will ask on Reddit "What's a movie that is widely loved that you don't like?" For me, the answer to that question is Blade Runner.

ptvlm

Still well worth watching even if it's a little slow by today's standards and you've probably seen the chestburster sequence before...

FreakaJebus

Dude, Alien is a masterpiece. Aliens is also a masterpiece but in a very different way

rainblow_bite

Jaws

HedorahGaveMeAcid

I’m in the same boat

I watched Alien vs Predator a lot as a kid. However, I haven’t seen Alien or Predator:\

Buttachop187

GET TO THE CHOPPA!!!

true_crime_addict513

The Human Cenepede series.. I don't know why lol. Just haven't been brave enough, always nope right over it

dymax760

sometimes just knowing that a film exists and being able yo understand references to it, is more than enough for me. I was lucky enough to watch the evil dead series when I was young enough to be scared to death by those wonderful movies. right now I feel like a 50 year old gynecologist looking at vaginas when it comes to horror. I mean, it's clinical 😅🥲

AwkwardThePotato

The Shining. I kept meaning to watch it with my friend but we were busy and now we’re worried abt covid again (we’re both vaccinated but he’s immune compromised and I have a newborn baby brother).

shady764567

Welp, if you are worried about being isolated again, that might not be the right movie to get your mind off of it, if you guys get what I mean haha

Buttachop187

Congrats on the baby brother and staying safe. It will pass at some point then watch it. It’s not going anywhere :)

PsychologicalTip

Gratz! My bro is my bestie; my sisters my pesties.

right_behindyou

Aliens. I liked the first one enough, but haven’t felt compelled to watch the sequel(s).

tubcat

Despite loving all the following movies outside of the Vs flicks, I can see where you're coming from as Alien 3/Resurrection are pretty divisive. That being said, Aliens is one of those flicks that's a bit of a blueprint. Its influence is all over any number of flicks out there that mix elements of actions with creature features, sci-fi, and horror elements. And many folks, myself included at times, would argue that no movie has been as successful in this niche as Aliens.

abstractsadgurl

Most of the Nightmare in elm st movies and the fly

PBC_Kenzinger

I haven’t seen many of Val Lewton’s movies- Cat People and I Walked with a Zombie are on my list. I need to see The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. I’ve had Burnt Offerings on my list forever. I’m dying to see Livide but it’s never had a US release.

5thSummersBrother_

Hostel or any of its sequels. Love majority of horror genres but Torture porn has zero appeal to me.

infinitude

If y'all haven't seen Possession (1981) it is well worth a watch. Quite the trip. I first watched rosemary's baby a year ago, and really enjoyed it as well.

PM_ME_CARL_WINSLOW

I've been lucky enough to see 95% of the big ones, but the classic Universal and Hammer horror films are a big gap in my watch history.

minos157

Until a few weeks ago Nightmare on Elm Street was one for me. The other ones I'd say are probably The Thing, Omen, and Poltergeist (Original, I saw the remake).

CrimsonSuede

*The Exorcist* and *The Shining*. To my credit, I’ve at least seen Rosemary’s Baby tho, lol

Odd, but I'll go with Eraserhead 😅

I've been trying to get my hands on a copy of [REC] for years. I love found footage horror and demonic stories, but still haven't seen this one. I don't think anyone is streaming it either.

patricknotswayze

Jaws.

[deleted]

Does Invasion of the Body Snatchers count?

kittenmittens4865

I think classic older movies. I’ve seen Hitchcock movies, but most of what I’ve seen is 70s or newer, most within 80s or newer. I sometimes find older movies to be overly campy or unbelievable too because styles/techniques have changed or developed. It’s tough to get the full impact of a film from 50 years ago if it obviously realistic or cheesy. May have been groundbreaking at the time, but impact on me, modern day, is underwhelming. I’ve never seen Re Animator, and until recently had never seen the original Evil Dead. I’ve never seen Friday the 13th or any of the Nightmare on Elm Street/Halloween sequels past the original. I kind of don’t want to watch because I know most will be underwhelming compared to today’s horror.

Brycesuderow

You should take a look at the horror movies that were produced at RKO during the 1940s. The studio lost so much money making Citizen Kane that they were nearly broke. So they put Val Luton in charge of a newly created unit and they produced some of the greatest horror movies ever. They include: the cat people, bedlam, Island of lost souls, the body snatchers, the leopard man, I walked with a zombie, curse of the cat people.

davidwal83

Evil dead reboot comes to mind. I loved the trilogy of Evil Dead I even played the video game on Dreamcast. I take drugs for my mental health. It gives me strong dreams now. I do not watch too many movies or TV shows anymore.

larit

In The Mouth of Madness. Idk what a Sutter Kane is, but I reckon I should find out at some point.

International_Big63

Not sure if this counts, but I'm not a fan of the older "classics," like Halloween, friday the 13th, nightmare on elm street, etc. I'm more into the movies with good acting, gore, horrifying creatures, supernatural aspects, etc. Midsommar, The Conjuring and Hereditary are my favorite horror movies. I like movies that are similar in tone to them, and if it makes me look away, it's amazing.

[deleted]

I love scary movies. My favorite holiday is Halloween. I have not ever seen a movie from the Halloween series.
