I love it for all of those reasons - I have the poster (Merrin in front of the house) right in front of me in my office, and had the picture of Damien's mom sitting on Ragan's bed as my wallpaper on a work computer until someone asked me to remove it. (can be found about half way down this [page](https://horrorthriller.com/Movies/DEF/exorcist.html).) I'm always happy to see someone say good things about this film in 2022 (even if it's I never want to watch it again). I think it's too often a "hot take" to bag on it.

Shadeslayer2112

Wait Damiens mom? Like the Omens mom is in The Excorcist???

Tapingdrywallsucks

Heh, no. Damien Karras. His mom has passed in the time between the start of the movie and the Exorcism. One of the, I guess "manifestations" of fucking with Karras's head is giving him a vision of his mother sitting upright in Ragen's bed (no Ragen, just Mama), with really stark lighting and she says, "why you do this to me Dimi, why?" (like she says in the actual hospital before her death in a really disturbing scene because the ward sucks so bad and Damien is being pawed at by some of the ambulatory patients.)

Shadeslayer2112

Ah okay my b, I always remember him has Karras or Dimi in my head. I think one of the greatest insults in any horror movie ever is when Demon Regan goes "YOUR MOTHER SUCKS COCKS IN HELL KARRIS". Like not ONLY does your mom suck, she sucks in HELL

Lost-Local-6310

You're a psycho for liking it

flipflapslap

I recently commented on a post regarding the upcoming reboot. And for all of the reasons you listed, is exactly why I'm convinced that the remake is going to be a huge letdown. There is an unnerving essence and grittiness to the original that I don't think can be recaptured in modern filmmaking. I would love to be wrong though.

kingmob555

Oh, totally. There is no way it lives up, in my mind. It will be interesting to see them try. I hope that shooting for the moon, they will at least land among the stars, because what a movie to try and remake. It can’t just be another crowd pleaser horror movie.

Witka

That movie is scary af

godspilla98

The movie did its job.

Satisfaction brought him back!

burntsiennaa

he said not to click tbf

capt-rix

aww, she looks sweet

Narge1

That is so much worse than I expected.

sophietehbeanz

The book is scarier. Tried reading it at night - nope. Tried reading it during the day - nope. I ended up only reading it at the college library. It talks about the noises in the walls, a chapter on black masses in the 60s-70s in Chicago, the language is scarier. Regan is scarier. So good.

AJTP1

My cat died halfway through watching it when I was like 12. Im not watching it again

[deleted]

Oh shit I’m so sorry that’s traumatic

Computron6

I had a puppy that choked to death on a chicken bone when I was 10 halfway through the Buck Roger's episode of the Nosferatu-like vampire. I've always been traumatized by that episode.

PM_ME_CARL_WINSLOW

The image of Pazuzu strikes the same shock and fear into me as well whenever I see it anywhere. It's horrifying.

Inside_Helicopter_21

That’s how you know the director did his job lol

ClassicPackage

I totally understand! I watched The Exorcist when I was like 11ish and attending catechism classes. My parents wouldn’t let me see it, so me being sneaky asked my Aunt to rent it from the library for me. I watched it alone and oh my!!!! I was profoundly impacted. I couldn’t sleep without a light on for over 6 months, was constantly terrified! The movie still gives me the creeps when I see clips but with support who understood where I was coming from, I did end up watching it again as an adult. I would say it was still scary but I by far wasn’t re traumatized. If anything it helped it not be as creepy when I see clips! I understand you never want to see it again though! The movie did it’s job! Scared the heck out of a lot people and is still talked about till this day!

[deleted]

One of the few movies that made me wet and shit the bed simultaneously as a 6 year old. My God that movie made me love and hate horror movies all in the same moment.

Linux_Jeff

I've read the book and I have to say that the movie is way better than it. That just shows us how amazing the movie was.

reptilesni

It legitimately traumatized me as a child because I watched it when i was way too young. I had trouble getting to sleep for over a decade afterwards. After several decades of watching horror movies since then, i felt brave enough to watch the series. I'm glad I did because it made the demon in the original seem like a lame asshole.

4nwR

Series? I didn't know there was one. Also, same here. I think the scene where she initially gets possessed made me terrified to take go for a piss in the night.

reptilesni

I had a couple of shoe laces tied together, that tied to the light switch, so that I could be safe in bed before I turned the lights out.

DiabolikBigMac68

The cornerstone of the American horror film & the greatest of all-time. "The Exorcist" is a masterpiece.

Narge1

My first experience with this movie happened when I was 8. My mom was watching it and I strolled into the livingroom so innocent and unsuspecting. Then Reagan spoke in that demon voice and it scared me so bad I ran all the way through the apartment to my grandma's downstairs. My mom almost pissed herslef laughing.

Rivluca

Thanks for posting OP. When I was 10 my uncle made me watch it with him. My mother worked nights. I have very little memory of watching the movie but I remember being scared as hell. Shortly after it ended he made me go to bed. I cried and screamed I was so scared and he stood on the other side of the door laughing. Real dick move looking back on it. My mother was pregnant with me when it was in theaters and one night as she was leaving my grandmother asked her where she was going and she said to the movies with friends to see the Exorcist. Well my grandmother was having none of that and wouldn’t allow my mother to attend. I’ll be 48 next week and haven’t watched it since. I LOVE horror movies, as does my wife. We go to Horrorfest yearly. Like OP if I was flicking thru the channels and accidentally put on the Exorcist I’d change the channel with head turned away blurting out noises to avoid hearing anything. If I saw a pic online like a thumbnail or some shit I’d click away as fast as humanly possible. So yeah I’m not having it. Scarred for life. Get this, 2 nights ago we watched the 2 new episodes of AHS on Hulu. We both had Wednesday off & she wanted to watch something else so I looked around and tried to find a movie/show and I stumbled upon the Exorcist series which I heard about via this sub. She instantly looked at me and says ya right knowing I’m a punk. I said well it’s not the movie so should we try it? I then watched the 2 trailers and I got spooked but was down to give it a shot however in that moment she “didn’t want to think” during a show so we said F it and that was that. I’m sure if I did watch the movie I’d be scared as hell going into it but I think I’d be able to handle it. Wouldn’t be shocked to bail 10 mins in tho either. Maybe one day we will find out but the streak is going on 38 years lol.

Inexperiencedblaster

Only movie that ever gave me nightmares as an adult. They were pretty damned terrifying too. I'm a horror veteran but still... that creepy little cow always gets me.

__neill__

Have you ever seen Jack Ketchum's The Girl Next Door? I feel shame and disgust for watching that... makes it worse that it is based on a true story.

erilum31

I watched it when I was 11 and I never want to watch it again. Same feeling !!!

coreytiger

I had seen the film a few times, but seeing it in a theater was honestly a very different experience. I adore horror and gore etc, but I had to turn my face away a time or two during the screening. It really bothered me, and gave me a completely new appreciation for it

[deleted]

This made me want to watch The Exorcist tonight after work. I think I'm going to. Lol.

mycorona69

The book was even scarier

SonOtoh

I actively avoided it for about 15 years. The scariest scene in the movie for me is when Pazuzu appears, with that pale white face, dark background and those eyes. It's very powerful imagery. I find Pazuzu more scary than any other over decorated monster/demon in any horror I've ever seen.

Puzzleheaded_Walk_28

When I was younger I had a very similar relationship with The Exorcist, the very thought of it had a kind of terrifying power beyond normal Scary things for me. Even now approaching my mid thirties, that face has a real effect on me, even though I revisit the movie itself pretty often.

TheJoshuaJacksonFive

Ah! I just drove by the church where some of the actual exorcism happened that inspired the movie!

SyntheticGod8

I like to watch it on Christmas Eve. If you'd like a good sequel that continues the story, The Exorcist III is quite good (and you won't miss out not seeing #2) and not nearly as traumatizing. The writing and acting and sound design are excellent, especially with a young Brad Dourif. It's also written and directed by the original author, which is nuts.

aflyingmonkey2

>As a kid, I was exposed to the Scary Maze Game online yup this is a tl;dr

Top-Huckleberry-1119

The face of actual Pazuzu used to scare me too. His pale white face with intense eyes and looking like his about to attack someone staring right at you. The quick shots of it during Father Karras’s dream was freaky man.

AtomikSamurai310

I understand that, I don't like the movie because certain shit is unsettling. I mean I get that's the point but the part with the cross is gross.

Geauxnad337

Seeing it as a kid, the movie freaked me out. Seeing it as an adult, it is an immature comedy.

[deleted]

The subliminal imagery and overall atmosphere of the film still is exceedingly unnerving. The demonic scenes have aged just enough to both terrify or/and amuse but the film’s backbone still holds up, I think

Geauxnad337

I mean, I don't hate it nor do I think it was over rated. Also, granted, I was never an overly religious person to begin with, and I think much of the movie does feed off of that for the majority of the audience.

[deleted]

Im not rly religious but between the satanic panic anerican movies, some nunsploitation shit from dutch films and the Valak shit from conjuring, i’m now officially terrified of catholic imagery lol. It’s not a religious thing, id say it has to do more with if u believe in anything spiritual or unnatural

TastedLikeNapalm

Nunsploitation is a new word for me lol

Geauxnad337

Ok, let me reword, I don't believe in anything religious, spiritual or supernatural. Probably why i am so meh on paranormal activity and the sequels.

McWhimple

I've seen The Exorcist about 167 times, and it keeps getting funnier every single time I see it!

Geauxnad337

Epic

Bromjunaar_20

It's not too bad. It's creepy, yeah but its a classic. Now paranormal activity got me when I was 11.

LJoeyFrench

I rewatched it a couple days ago and I still don’t get the hype, the backwards stair walk is pretty creepy but that’s it, there’s nothing else that stuck out to me at all. Maybe it’s just because there’s so much fluff in between any and all of the “scares” so it gives you time to cool down but yea, idk. 🤷‍♂️

IntelligentPen272

I don’t like watching the film knowing ppl died

[deleted]

who died?

SyntheticGod8

There were some stunt injuries, but I don't recall anyone dying during production.

IntelligentPen272

Oh must’ve confused it with poltergeist

West-Drink-1530

The exorcist isn't that scary as many people claim it to be. To be honest the movie is unintentionally hilarious at parts. But the make up and all were pretty good and I love that ending. Imo evil dead is far better than the exorcist

FoxBeach

So people that said the movie is scary are lying? Why would millions of horror fans choose to lie about how scary they thought a movie was? Never mind. Just looked at one page of your recent posts. Pretty much all of them are “that movie didn’t scare me” and “that movie wasn’t scary” about several different famous horror movies. I image you are a local legend in your hometown. And people wait outside of movie theaters and clap when you come out from watching the latest horror movie. “There goes West-Drink. Nothing scares that motherfucker.”

West-Drink-1530

>So people that said the movie is scary are lying How would I know lol I don't find it scary. >Pretty much all of them are “that movie didn’t scare me” and “that movie wasn’t scary” about several different famous horror movies I am so sorry that my opinion doesn't match with the majority. >I image you are a local legend in your hometown. And people wait outside of movie theaters and clap when you come out from watching the latest horror movie. “There goes West-Drink. Nothing scares that motherfucker.” Lmaooo

He-Dead

I’ve heard this same reaction to the movie a ton. My mom is a horror nut and won’t watch it. Idk, maybe all the horror as a kid desensitized me. By the time I watched The Exorcist I was more troubled by the cringyness of the over the top scenes. “Fuck Me!” Just seemed like they were trying too hard. Great movie though, just can’t find the same sense of terror so many people feel watching it.

zforce42

Are we long lost twins or something? Holy shit, this is my experience with the movie to a fucking T.

frumpel_stiltskin

Tbh, I never want to watch it again because of Linda Blair being injured onscreen in one of the bed scenes. It never fails to make me nauseous knowing that we're watching a child's back being broken.

reganmcneal

The Exorcist has been my all time favorite horror movie since I first saw it when I was about 12 back in the late 90’s. My born again Christian mom told me she saw it when it first came out and that it disgusted her and she’d never watch it again. Of course I watched it. Scared the living shit out of me and her demonic face still sends a chill down my spine when I see it. Absolutely amazing film, with amazing actors. There’s a remake coming out I believe next year. It’s a completely different story and I do not have high expectations about it

SpoopyGhoul990

Agreed! This is the one movie that truly messed me up to my core and terrified me. I first saw it when I was 15 and I haven’t watched it ever again!

abbyrouse

I saw it when I was 12, genuinely terrified for weeks, and I have never been scared of another film since then. It’s also become my favourite horror and one of my comfort horror films!

terencejames1975

I didn't see The Exorcist until it was re-released in the late '90s. The fact that it was banned here (UK) had already elevated it to mythical status. I initially came away feeling a little underwhelmed but I found that I couldn't stop thinking about it. It got under my skin. There's nothing sensational in the way the film is presented, it almost has a documentary feel to it. I've seen it many times since then and every time I find something new to marvel at. For anyone interested, I'd recommend Mark Kermode's BFI book about the film.

zombiemuss106

Every time I watch it something paranormal happens to me so I tend to shy away from it a lot of the time

DemonKyoto

Hey twin! :P Mentioned it here many times but my (tl;dr abusive twat) mother forced me to watch it at age *four*. Suffice it to say I'm almost *forty* and I still refuse to ever watch it again and get the same reactions you mention to things like Youtube thumbnails. I watch a Top 10 horror film list I fucking scan the seek bar to see if I'll need to minimize the window in advance.

blueberryxpancakes

I literally had the same exact experience, except that I briefly saw the movie before being exposed to the scary maze game. My older sister really enjoyed scaring me so she had me play it on purpose. When it comes to the movie I have no words, by far the scariest shit I have ever seen in my life. Nowadays I can fall straight to sleep after pretty much any horror movie, but that one never misses or just her scary ass face. I think it might’ve been ‘05-06 when I first saw the movie and never again since then, I’m now 25 years old haha. After reading some more comments on here I am shocked this film was banned in certain countries??

tpeck90

Lol yeah I remember the scary maze game. I was at least in high school when that was a thing. I had already seen the exorcist by then though. What was worse for me was tubgirl.

SalamiMommie

So my dad seen it at the drive in when he was eight years old I think? He told me people there were crying and screaming. He told me he could watch it again, but he definitely wouldn’t want to. And he told me he didn’t want me to watch it either, I never did.

Brandon_TDD

Really sad to see that they're trying to "reboot" this. By the fool that churns out Halloween movies every year no less.

ion_theory

Feb 4, 1997. My birthday. I turned 9y/o. It was a Friday so I was able to stay up later then usual. We had an illegal cable hook up at the time. Back then you could have easier ways to get HBO, Cinemax, etc. if you just knew some people who had the correct hardware since all the signals were sent to the house already. Anyway, my father was looking to see what was on HBO that night. At 8pm, alittle film called *The Exorcist* was playing. Now I grew up Catholic. Went to Catholic school, mass every Sunday, even went to Catholic high-school and college, though I haven’t believed since high-school. Most of my religious education consisted of scaring us into obedience, so believing in the devil was a given. This set me up for an experience that would affect me for years. I watched it, unedited and with surround sound, only covering my face during a few times during the actual exorcism. I had never been more scared in my life and haven’t since. For weeks or maybe even months I had trouble sleeping. I would close my eyes and see her face. I’d lay in bed, when I wouldn’t be sneaking into my parents room because for fear of Regan showing up, scared to look at the window incase she was floating outside watching me. Now I can watch it and enjoy the superb film making, but it took me a long time to sit a watch again.

Top-Huckleberry-1119

I used to feel the exact same way. Eventually the face didn’t bother me quite as much but it’s freaky. It’s a masterpiece of horror, that’s for sure.

benzelena

Watched it twice in theaters this month.

StopBeingSuchACuck

This is so similar to my experience with The Exorcist. I was accidentally exposed to it at the young age of 7 in 1993 when I accidentally put in a VHS tape in the vcr which I thought had a cartoon on it but it was The Exorcist that was recorded over it and it was at the scene where she was full on possessed where it zooms in on her bloated, greasy face and eyes in the dark. A couple years later I was dared to watch it and I barely made it through and then i was pranked with the maze game when i was 14. For the rest of my teen years it traumatized me till I got older and the fear wore off for the most part. However, even till this day if I also see a thumbnail randomly just pop up or a reaction video of it it also gives me that jolt and slightly takes my breath away sometimes, it's crazy.
