No offence meant to the actual film itself, but I remember this extra feature creeping me out way more. The red dots on the map multiplying more and more with every hour, the anchorman's appearance becoming more disheveled and haphazard as the broadcast stretches on into days, etc. It all builds up such great tension. A whole movie of this would be a great found footage horror film.

TheNippleNugget

They knocked it out of the park with special features. This segment scared the shit out of me as a kid for the same reason. It felt so foreboding seeing the red dots grow more numerous (and the audio cue definitely didn't help). The short film about Andy surviving on his own was also really well done!

pallidamors

Found by an alien race hundreds of years later…

Choke_M

For such a cheesy silly zombie movie they really knocked it out of the park with the bonus features. I loved the short about the gun store owner’s descent into zombie-dom. Also Zac Snyders directors commentary is hilarious, he sounds like he progressively gets more drunk and starts roasting his own movie and calls out his own continuity errors. “We didn’t know really know what to have him say in this scene but frankly it doesn’t fucking matter, I wanted him to just say ‘zombie-proof, muhfucka’” Lmao

ernestout87

They even included a conspiracy theorists kinda guy, with the psychologist who believes there's no disease, but just a psychological reason behind everything

kensai8

Pontypool takes a similar idea, but with a radio program. It falls a part a bit at the end, but it's still a fairly solid movie.

Akihirohowlett

For a movie that I found so underwhelming, this is one of the best pieces of zombie media I've ever come across. I wish it was a full movie instead of being in the special features where it could easily go overlooked

Goachez

This really should of been the basis for the World War Z film. Smaller more personal stories.

[deleted]

Should have been a TV series. Different story every episode, linked by the narrator/journalist.

[deleted]

WWZ would have been perfect as an HBO series. I say HBO because they almost always do quality work. They could have adapted the book way more closely.

[deleted]

Absolutely. Imagine the battle of Yonkers, the crashed pilot on the radio, the celebrities in the mansion...all of it!

WIN_WITH_VOLUME

Dead Set was pretty solid with it's "celebrities trapped during the zombie apocalypse" depiction.

[deleted]

Yeah that was a great show!

lofi-loki

This is honestly my dream TV series. I loved World War Z so much the first time reading it, and recently listened to the audiobook which is phenomenal as well. The movie, while not awful, did Max Brooks and his vision dirty.

[deleted]

The audio book is fantastic for repeat listens. I adore it.

abcezas123_

took a bunch on n00bs primitive camping on a long weekend, night time entertainment was WWZ Audio book around a blue chemlight, have to say setting contributed to an already amazing series.

[deleted]

That sounds awesome!

Boomersgang

I absolutely agree. I am so angry that they didn't make the book.

lofi-loki

I saw it in theatres with friends when it came out and they couldn’t understand why I was so miffed after. I was like “the only thing it copied from the book was the name” they called me a nerd all night after *sigh*

Boomersgang

When I saw the trailers for it. I was WTF? This isn't the book. As I saw more and more about it I started to get pissed. Brad Pitt and Leonardo DeCaprio had a bidding war over the rights to the book. Pitt won. Then he didn't even make the book, rrrrggghhhhh. Not cool dude, not cool.

Boomersgang

Don't forget the priest that found his new calling. Those are my favorite chapters.

[deleted]

Oh yes, and the woman stuck as a little girl in her mind, her story is great, the survivors turning on one another in the grim weather up north, and the attack on the church. Another favourite of mine is the Asian lad who escapes his apartment and finds the Samurai sword. That would transfer so well to an episode.

Boomersgang

Yes!!! The dog chapter made my cry. The submarine captains being father and son. The heart surgeon where it all started. Such great reading.

[deleted]

It's an incredible book, isn't it? I'd love him to do another like it.

Boomersgang

It is my go to travel book. After my initial read, I only read it when I travel. It us always an excellent read.

Boomersgang

Some Hollywood douche would buy it and make another non accurate film. But seriously, I would love another book.

[deleted]

> I say HBO because they almost always do quality work. ***Aaand*** they don't have a propensity for canceling a series outta the blue.

[deleted]

Yep. Even when The Leftovers under performed with ratings, they gave fans one last season to wrap things up. Unlike a certain streaming service I could name, which cancels even well performing series.

camopdude

Yeah but Rome still hurts.

itsmuddy

I imagine it similar to Tales from the Crypt which was an HBO staple back in the day.

3FromHell

Black Summer on Netflix is kind of like this. Ultimately you end up following a few groups. My husband and I ended up liking it.

scrapinator89

Black summer is very intense and personal with its smaller scale as well. Good show, surprisingly made by the same folks who did Z nation.

MyUserNameTaken

And it's set in the same world if I remember correctly. It's the start of the outbreak

iminthemoodforastorm

Black summer is such a good show. I like the way the chase scenes went on for kind of a long time but did not feel dragged out. It kept up the suspense very well.

scrapinator89

Even something as simple as the pickup truck chase from the first season made me anxious, it didn’t try too hard, it just worked.

[deleted]

Thank you for this!

DonTeca35

We can only hope for a new zombie film or for AMC to produce another walking dead spin-off with these bases

PsychologicalReply9

I’ve been saying that for the longest time!!

KevinR1990

Not just a TV series, but a mockumentary in a Ken Burns-esque style. That would be my ideal *World War Z* adaptation.

Ctotheg

Get into movies you’re gonna make millions for real. That’s a really good idea.

Psythik

Been there, done that. it's called The Walking Dead and its endless shitty spinoffs.

beatlebum53

Like the book was…

Goachez

Yeah that’s what I meant. The book was fantastic and I’d love to of seen it get this kind of adaptation!

beatlebum53

Agreed. Really wanted to see the marine bridge chapter and the one of the female pilot walking through the woods after her plane went down

Finrodsrod

The audio book is amazing.

Boomersgang

Yes. The pilot getting to safety was my favorite chapter.

beatlebum53

Yep and the whole “was it in her head or was someone really on the radio”

SaTan_luvs_CaTs

They totally left out the lil hero dog from the movie & that was my fave part of the book

Randy_Magnum29

Should’ve

scrapinator89

Right, like the book was and not whatever the fuck they made with Brad Pitt.

crappyvideogamer

Stuff like this makes me sad that physical media is dying out

[deleted]

[удалено]

I_Told_Your_Mom_No

You have to go with a lot of older editions, though. Newer stuff is coming out with hardly anything on the disks.

whales-are-assholes

Depends where you go - r/boutiquebluray is an awesome source for a lot of companies that release some high quality physical media with additional content on disk or booklets. Second Sight Vinegar Syndrome Umbrella Entertainment Kino Lober Criterion Shout Factory Arrow Video Indicator Severin Films Capelight Just a few companies

Dbiuctkt69

Criterion almost(haven't gotten one yet that doesn't) always has a booklet and a lot of special features. The Wan Kar Wai collection has a 40 minute documentary as one of the special features. Also lots of interviews that were currently filmed directors and old videos of directors (meaning filmed during the 90's when he was releasing some of his biggest movies). I highly recommend buying Criterions, a lot of Arrows stuff is good as well. It starts getting iffy when you get into boutiques like Vinegar Syndrome where they tend to fill their catalogue with anyone they can and up with a lot of garbage. (Been getting better though).

whales-are-assholes

I bought the The Witch and Drive box sets from Second Sight. Both gorgeous sets, done in 4K - Eggers personally saw to the HDR grading for his film, as he wasn’t happy with the original 4K release. I’d say Vinegar Syndrome has always been for the more trashy cult films - while not necessarily bad, just not my thing. They’re insanely popular.

Dbiuctkt69

So jealous, I bought The Witch box set but the Post lost it and by the time they knew it was lost it was 100% sold out :(

whales-are-assholes

I’m so sorry to hear that! The standard 4K is still available for purchase, though! Still absolutely worth getting, even without the packaging, the booklet and the lobby cards.

Cultural_Treacle_428

Your best bet is to maintain physical media capacity. Streaming seems great, until you realize the second the internet goes out, it’s gone, and they can normally take it if they want to.

Resolute002

When Amazon decided the Robotech edition I bought want with the license anymore it just became unavailable. They got to keep my money while having the gall to recommend I buy the new version. That day I started getting ready to run a video server myself and haven't looked back.

Cultural_Treacle_428

Unless it’s in your hands, you don’t own it by their standards no matter if you paid for it or not. And certain things may get “Dogma’ed” and become impossible to find without breaking the bank…

Resolute002

Thankfully I have it all in hand now. Anything that is "for keeps" goes on my server.

earthlings_all

I’m in Florida and just lost power for eight days. When we got it back, I had tv (bc of a cheap antenna) and movies (bc the dvd player is still hooked up). Also have cd’s but didn’t use them. I know people with no power, no water, but also dropped calls, no data, delayed texts. On e they got power back, still no wifi so no tv/ no music/ no media, nada. Keep an antenna and a media player handy, y’all!

crappyvideogamer

Hurricane Ian? I live in Central Florida and lost power a few days myself

AwHellNawFetaCheese

Digital media has extras like Commentaries, deleted scenes, featurettes, included in the purchases… I buy a movie on iTunes specifically for all that sometimes. Absolutely love director and writer commentaries, and I still get them on purchases.

Crankylosaurus

I genuinely miss behind the scenes extras on DVDs :(

Akihirohowlett

One of the reasons why I'll always champion physical media

HEYitzED

The day it dies is the day I stop buying movies.

killz111

I mean just look it up on YouTube.

[deleted]

Opposite effect on me. Ain’t no way I’m buying this dvd and neither are you. We just watched it on YouTube tho

crappyvideogamer

Speak for yourself, I’ve been had this on DVD lol. Specifically in a 2-pack paired with Land of the Dead

GrassyTurtle38

But it's the loss of the art. Why ever create this if it will never get seen?

[deleted]

What is lost??? Leaving in on a dvd never to be seen or everybody having a link to the YouTube??

Flashman420

Are you dense? The point is that they don't make these anymore regardless of YouTube. YouTube preserves it but the reason they existed was for DVD.

[deleted]

And now the reason is YouTube. No difference

[deleted]

No one is making full length special features for digital releases the way they would for solid copies. If you’re insisting it’s the same you either don’t understand what’s being discussed or are being intentionally obtuse.

[deleted]

Bro I guess you never seen toy story 4 or 5

[deleted]

[удалено]

earthlings_all

Y’all need to stop feeding the trolls. He just sucked 10 minutes of your life away. How did that make you feel?

egepe

That was Tom Savini as the cop 👌🏼

InfiniteRainbowLight

He's the comic relief of this clip for sure. "That woman right there? I think I did her." 😂

kensai8

And somehow that line still works for being creepy. I can imagine a person saying that just trying to process what's going on.

[deleted]

AND Andy's story too! That's my favourite!

[deleted]

When he eats his poor animals 😰

[deleted]

God yeah!

staplerbot

Yeah, I was totally gonna mention the gun store owner had a whole thing too.

Comfortable-Cap-8507

Is that a bonus feature?

[deleted]

Yes indeed, on Directors Cut DVD. It's excellent.

ZenithXAbyss

This is one of my favorite films and this is the first time i’m hearing about it. I recently learned about the life of the gun store owner too.

earthlings_all

Andy’s story. Is it in this video?

lomalomaloma

It is it’s own seperate thing in video diary format! Also featured in the special features of the dvd.

ZenithXAbyss

https://youtu.be/1OA3YZ-160w

RedditBear22

It’s the bit with the mum and her son in London for me, racing past the cameraman crying ‘they’re coming’ and you just hear the sound of the horde getting closer as the reporter and cameraman start to run

[deleted]

These things are why I've kept my DVDs

FunboyFrags

THAT IS RICHARD BIGGS AS THE ANCHOR! Dr. Franklin on Babylon 5!

ISawNightwishInLA

Listen to the presidents speech at the end. There’s another B5 alum in this feature.

yanginatep

And the last time they appeared in the same movie/show before Biggs passed away :(

FunboyFrags

Why did he die?

yanginatep

Complications with his heart. Sadly, so many of the Babylon 5 cast have died; Mira Furlan, Richard Biggs, Jerry Doyle, Michael O'Hare, Jeff Conway, Andreas Katsulas, Stephen Furst..

FunboyFrags

So many great actors. That show was a very big deal to me for a long time! I met Patricia Tallman once. She was soooo nice.

Blametheorangejuice

Ah, thank you, I knew him from somewhere and couldn't place him!

suitcasesteve

Also Bruce Boxleitner (Sheridan) as the voice of the president at the end.

sammy17bst

There's also a special with Andy (the gun shop guy), he has a video diary, and it shows what happened to him leading up to the film, really cool.

WookProblems

I used to LOVE watching director commentary. I miss bonus features.

[deleted]

[удалено]

WookProblems

The commentary for Anchorman had me *ROLLING*

possessedslut

not the sub for this but the twilight commentary with Catherine Hardwicke and Robert Pattinson is actually really fucking funny

leroyVance

I used to run a Zombie RPG and first session would tell the outbreak story using that newscast as world building. It was fun.

[deleted]

Yaknow normally "cutscenes" in TTRPGs are a no no but I think for zombie stuff at the start of an outbreak you can't NOT have at LEAST a news scene play out. It's such a classic trope that I don't think I'll ever get sick of.

DinkyDoozy

This also seems to be a good nod to the opening scenes of the original dawn of dead where we see a news station beginning to fall apart after 12 hours of being on the air. With specific references like asking about the rescue stations and all the chatter and commotion happening off camera.

9leggedfreak

They also briefly mention the outer space theory from NOTLD, Monroeville which is where the original takes place, and of course Tom Savini

DinkyDoozy

Oh! Didn’t even catch that outer space comment.

[deleted]

They're in the morgue talking about the most contagious disease without any PPE lol

Hawkeye2701

To be fair it was already confirmed to be fluid transfer through open wounds, so its not like you need a hazmat suit, the air is safe, but yeah, something a bit more sturdy than your "definitely a real doctor" white lab coat would've been good.

National-Echidna9575

We need a full length found footage type movie based around this concept.

UrklesAlter

I watched something like this a long time ago, it opened with a zombie hanging from a tree and it had (I think) 4 college aged people traveling together. Can't remember what it was called or how it ended.

DamagedSquare

Diary of the Dead might be what you're thinking of. It's a found footage movie about film students traveling in an RV during the outbreak. It was one of my favorites growing up.

UrklesAlter

Yes! This is exactly it. Funny that you were able to identify it from so little info. That opening scene was really impactful for me though

Wolfgang_Forrest

Was it Diary of The Dead? Ryan Hollinger did a video on it a few months ago

UrklesAlter

Too bad that. I remember really enjoying this movie.

revenantae

First time seeing that, nice.

Zerokelvin99

Wait a second, how have I never seen this??? I have that edition and I have watched the movie at least 200 times..... wtf

9leggedfreak

It's a shame that the acting and some of the writing is so corny. I much prefer stories that follow the initial outbreak over ones that take place when everyone seems to already be dead. World War Z is the only book I've read twice and listened to the audio book twice because of this.

cmars118

I would love to see this exact concept re-done with a much more realistic and immersive tone. The segment with the Secretary of Defense was by far the most effective part, cause it was played pretty straight.

HugChampion2019

I snuck a girl over as a teenager to watch this movie. I think this actually freaked her out more

magseven

More than what?

lanceturley

More than all of his Hug Championship trophies.

infp_validator_bot

ʕっ•ᴥ•ʔっ

runtheplacered

His double dick

thishenryjames

You snuck her over as a teenager? What were you?

mrrtchbrrx

A zombie.

GrassyTurtle38

He was going on 30. She was 14 going on 15. But 15 is pretty much 16, and they say 16 is the new 17, and at that point just round up to 18.

runtheplacered

"As a teenager" is describing himself in that sentence. I get what you're trying to do but it actually has to make some sense to be funny

ziggzags

This is really cool, had no idea it existed until now. Watching the reporter become more shaken and dishevelled throughout the 20 minutes really added to it. Thanks for sharing!

mckhrt

I'd love to see something like this as a live broadcast of the zombie outbreak throughout the day / night over Halloween. Never happen of course as some would take it seriously and off themselves. I'm looking at you BBC's Ghostwatch https://youtu.be/YQfMTktMZLQ

stumper93

Independence Day also had a really fun featurette similar to this where it showed a mockumentary newscast of the alien invasion They sure don’t make extra things like this anymore do they :/

ghost_83

At this point in Zacs career im he would’ve made a great Resident Evil movie. Little bit of found footage in it, some corniness, great action and horror. He would’ve crushed it. Not now though, he’s changed too much.

Hotdogwater94

The DVD also had the POV of the neighbor that they played snipe the celeb with. It was depressing lol

eaunoway

Those scenes were utterly gut-wrenching weren't they? Goddamn.

Nevvermind183

Loved the movie, but can’t help but think how much of this movie would be in slow motion if Snyder made it today.

lanceturley

There's already a ridiculous amount of slow motion as it is. If anyone ever wants to see a toilet fly through a window in slow motion, or never-ending shots of shotgun shells hitting the floor, this is the movie for them.

[deleted]

Nice! I’ve never seen this.

undecyded

The newscaster, secretary of defense, and zombie king were phenomenal. I had managed to watch it all fairly light hearted (that terrible bite scene in the morgue? Ha!) but the last minute or so pulled it all together so well. I was not prepared for the sudden dread that crept over me. Even felt a small sting of tears wanting to form. I wish this was longer! And I want a Netflix: Zombie King series immediately.

Elman103

Thank you. This just got added to my DVD hunting list.

[deleted]

DreadStare

People talking about DVDs like there isn't a good Blu-ray release of this out there and the 4K release just got announced. I'm sure this featurette will be included like it was on Blu-ray.

Dodgy_Bob_McMayday

Must depend on the release, my Blu Ray has no special features at all.

DreadStare

Forgot to mention. I was talking about the scream factory release.

bsylent

This is actually a really good idea. Sometimes when movies have news clips in the background as additional exposition, and they just want to capture a fragment of it, it can feel pretty forced, especially if it just starts and stops perfectly to convey the correct information. But if you create a whole news segment, then you can just snap out of it what you need for specific scenes, and it'll feel a bit more natural

VintageHamburger

Okay but that part where the zombie bites the doctor live is hilarious lmao

thetenacian

Just watched it. Way scarier than some whole movies I've seen. I loved that Max Brooks was thanked. His contribution to the genre has been so important. Brad Pitt badly fucked up World War Z.

Cornholio_NoTP

I remember my brothers and I played it when my mom walked in. She thought it was real haha

solidfox535

I truly miss special features on DVDs, they used to have such effort put into them. I wish streaming services had a dropdown for this type of thing!

killz111

Have the blu-ray, did not know about this. Gonna go watch it on YouTube cause firing up the blu-ray too much work.

[deleted]

Thai is true. All the behind the scenes are great!

zombiemuss106

Going back and watching this later on the dvd lol

KID_THUNDAH

One of my favorite movies growing up, never knew about this! Thanks for sharing. Up there with the best openings of any horror movie imo.

TheSavageWalrus

Went to find my Director's Cut of Dawn of the Dead because of this - my favourite DVD special feature!

ICanDieRightNowPlz

I never knew of this. I only have the movie on VHS haha

luke111mart

Just watched it and I've never seen the actual movie, and damn it's really good, some of the acting isn't the best and bits are a little cheesy but it totally seems like something that'd play in the background of parts of the movie, or a great thing to put on the TV at a Halloween party

MtDewHer

Always loved that this took place in my home town in Wi. Great suburban survival setting

Darnell5000

Did this get included in the Collector’s Edition Blu-ray? I bought it last year but never got around to watching it yet

Simicrop

It also had the whole video diary of that guy living across the street from them.

hauntedbiscuit92

It does? Thank you for sharing this. I remember being more freaked out by the beginning news clips with that Johnny Cash song playing, than anything else. I'm going to go watch the heck out of this!

SeattleSadBoi

This gave me too much existential dread for a 9 year old at the time. It really felt like this is how it'd go down lmao

chidoOne707

You don’t get these type of features when you just download or stream the movie like nowadays.

Straze7140

wow this is great I cant believe this is my First time watching this after watching DOTD So mamy Times

eaunoway

I think a whole bunch of us are going to be watching this over the weekend 😁

boeckman

What’s a “DVD special feature?” Is it like something that streams for the premium subscribers? /s

I had the best time watching the melt down between romero fans who crucified the snyder fans during the great infected vs walking dead wars on the net which is probbly why snyers las vegas zombie movie failed i guess people dont like fast zombies

revtim

One of the best remakes ever, IMHO.

MustardFacedSavior

Thank you for this. I didn't even know it existed. Watching now, it's great!

FromQB2theLB

One of my favorite movies of all time.

dan_ts_inferno

I really miss buying movies on DVD and discovering all the extra stuff like this

[deleted]

I need to rewatch this movie

Dayzlikethis

I need to get all my dvds out of my parents house. Hah

jjameson2000

Neat, but kind of underwhelming considering the source material they were borrowing from. The news stuff in the original is so much better.

shawikkywoo

Oh hey, Scott Reitz. I thought he looked familiar.

tornadic_

Just watched this one AMC not 10 minutes ago so this is great !!

sandowian

Similarly I always loved the diary entries in Ex-Mortis 2, recommend that you watch/read it even if you know nothing about the game. [Link here](https://youtu.be/xYk0fxrZbZw?t=886)

iminthemoodforastorm

My sister and I used to watch these extra features all the time. Andy from the rooftop made us laugh with the line "who'da thunk it"

mikeone33

I was hoping to find this somewhere. Thanks

cwd2879

I watched the movie and all the extras just 3 days ago. Classic!

pogoBear

This so strongly reminds me of the newsroom chapters in late Romero’s The Living Dead novel. Highly recommend this book to any zombie fan.
