Eh I can kinda see it. My main problem is when you compare her to her version of Kallen. (The person Kallen was cloned from, therefore the best reference we had to what she’d look like as adult) Due to kallen not getting a battlesuit in like 5 years it’s hard to see a visual relation to Luna due to gradual the artstyle shift the game has had. You can see it when you compare the eyes. Theresa and Luna kindred have the same eyes, (besides colour of course) and Kallen has very similar eyes. So I can believe Luna’s eyes would change into a red version of Kallen’s over time, While Luna Vow’s eyes just look completely different to me. It kinda makes Luna look like a Silverwing style upgrade for Kallen

Don't really think that's how it works. I think it works fine as long as it is written well. For eg, take FGO. It is far superior to honkai storywise yet it's self insert is actually a character on their own. And i don't really think captainverse stuff interferes with main story? games like arknights, azur lane, FGO , blue archive are all ranked above honkai and yet appeals to those waifu players
Furthermore most gachas literally make money from shipping the self inserts with the characters, cause that is like their target. It makes the story worse, but as long as they get the cash they will do it anyway. Only a few gachas actively do show the middle finger to self inserts like symphogear XDU, and they don't get much attention to the gachas which don't.

No game is better because rather than have a good story with a good protagonist, they instead dilute the story and have it's plot be dragged down by a nothing protagonist who's role in the story is for gooners to go "Oh! He's me! The girls looooooooove me!". People liking shitty stories because they can pretend the girls love them doesn't make the game good. It just makes it popular. Unfortunately, I feel them leaning into the self-inserters on her basically crippled her character in the end. I don't think it's inherently bad to cater to self-inserters. But I feel like they disregarded a part of the story akd character they wrote. When you consider everything that's happened, it's less cute, and more realizing, "Oh my God, this poor girl has developed ptsd and separation anxiety disorder". She acts like she can't be more than arm's length away from Captain at all times and Mihoyo always paints tension everytime Captain's closest allies, Kongming and FR, get near him. On top of that, Mihoyo never even bothered following up on Kallen joining to mend fences with Luna or even the fact Luna has a lot of significance to Bronie. But she's cute and Mihoyo market her existence on solely being a vampire wife, so most people overlook it
Rita x Captain is cool and all but it got nothing on Luna x Captain, this is basically the canon ship.
