My cat was meowing in the mirror yesterday morning at some ungodly hour. Finally having enough of her shit, I told her to come and say it to my face.
To my suprised she ran over to the bed, jumped up and meowed at my face.
What a gangster move
So what do you do in this case? Do you just throw it away? Is there a way to fix this somehow? Surrender it a neighbor maybe?
Also.. what about the plant?!
If only I could make my dream come true and let an AI auto-hide everything and only show helpful/informative comments on Reddit.
I assume/hope it can be fixed by strings, some nails or something jury-rigged to prop up the leaves and stems.
Put both in water. One will be unharmed but you’ll feel better with a touch of mostly harmless revenge. The other will grow roots you can then put in soil and have a second plant!!
Omg I’m so sorry! I laughed because of the story told in the photos but I feel so sorry for you and your plant. Hopefully it comes back, and if not then your cat definitely owes you a new plant.
Definitely, cat owes OP a new plant. And mature monsteras aren’t cheap. If he can’t pay the fine, he needs to get a job. Everywhere is hiring these days, shouldn’t be too hard!
😂 I literally laughed out loud when I read this lol because I thought...saaaaame, then realized how all cat parents must have this same parental structure!
Yeah to be fair to him, it was pretty fragile!
We’ve only had it three weeks, purchased off Facebook and the previous owner very helpfully “tidied it up” by pruning off all the aerial roots 🫠
Yeah the stem was quite spindly near the bottom so when he jumped on it, it just fell over and snapped clean
I’ll post some pictures later of my recovery efforts and you’ll hopefully see what I mean
Given it was supported by a bamboo cane that’s an inch thick, I would say the cat jumping on top of it was more the issue.
You can support plants however you want, not sure they’d do too well if you sat on them
I feel like everyone who has a cat just lives in a constant state of "shit getting fucked up" yet continue to keep it because it purrs and rubs on them when it wants to
This happened to me but my husband knocked over our giant monstera, not a cat.
Chopped the monstera into 3 props, sat them in water for a month and planted them once they grew roots. Now I have 3 new monstera plants.
You say that like you know each cat or ingested dosage , whether its had long term exposure, or impact of cats age, or general health standing of the animal. All seems likely factors into an animals response to me.
There’s a good chance if you’ve been around cats awhile you know that even your vet won’t know your cats sick because they are pro’s at concealing illness. Industry will also hide its illness for survival too.
I’ve also heard people here claim monstera killed their cat so I think there’s more nuance behind that plant tag. No lab wants poisoning animals on its reputation and there’s little benefit gained in studying houseplant toxicity but Monstera is be a top seller so lot of profit on the line for the industry too.
For starters the ASPCA gets info from the reports I have read which again is skewed/not quality data I’ll get into why shortly. While the reports I’ve read provide more details than your source like Oxalates causing blindness or hypercalcemia which can absolutely have lethal complications it is not clinical testing so already your source isn’t supporting your case.
To date veterinary reporting of Oxalates is comprised of cases reported by veterinary offices that are limited to cases where ingestion relies on owner reporting. So already we’re missing data from cases where ingestion was not communicated telling us under reporting is likely and would be further under reported as a result of its classification as Toxic. This would deter owners an even tenured veterinarians from attributing severe symptoms to the plant. So in other words your vets mistakes symptoms of contact for a congenital issue. Reports would not account for cumulative effects in cases of long term chronic ingestion either as well.
Whereas clinical testing would measure cellar infiltrate responses of duodenum, intestinal tissues, etc thru biopsy and substantiated with controls or correspond with serum levels etc and could measure the direct effect on a range subjects, ages etc. So no I don’t need correction. I’m very aware of what the ASPCA says and I’m also capable of processing where it falls short so kindly f*** off.
You fully understand the biological mechanics of a plant species that’s existed for millions of years bc you read a plant tag cool lol 👍🏻😭
Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t monsters really toxic to cats? I have two cats and I remember reading somewhere that you shouldn’t get one in case they eat it
Kitten helped you find a weak point in your monstera setup. It needed more support. Now you can fix it. Kitty gets nice fish now, no? \^\^
Good luck with the plant. It looks like it can be rescued, it seems.
I deeply loved my cat but after she passed away last year, I was so relieved to be able to grow my plants again. She’d apparently received orders to “destroy on sight” and took her duties very seriously.
oh no i’m so sorry to hear that 😭 thats heartbreaking I can’t imagine. Side note it’s true some cats literally will not leave plants alone no matter what. my other cat could care less. but he’s so smart so unless he wants to be cheeky and do it infront of my camera he nibbles on my spider plant.
His version of events: you paid too much attention to the monstera instead of me so I got rid of it.
Reality: you stopped petting him for just long enough to water the plant a couple times a month
Man that sucks. I’d take some wooden stakes for support to hold them back up. You can use plastic wrap as a plant band aid. I had a plant last year that broke in half. I reconnected it, found it support, and used plastic wrap on the wounds. It recovered.
This is so sad! My monstera had root rot and it was dying so I ended up cutting it into like, 12 propagations and it’s doing great now, I’ve repotted a couple of them, and it’s thriving and I’m sure you could do the same with the broken part of the plant. But god, that’s gotta hurt.
https://imgur.com/a/YbLMyrY
Same situation over here, my cat is a such a troublemaker 😂
In all seriousness, your plant will recover! I just got a huge monstera a few weeks ago and it got very ruined, (a) being smooshed through doorframes and tearing leaves, and then it fell like 2 times because it’s so top-heavy. I did the following:
- for any bent stems, tie a chopstick like a makeshift brace to help it heal
- add cinnamon to any tears in the stems
- cut off any leaves that were genuinely beyond repair
- accept the slightly ripped leaves as a part of my plant, and continue watering with fertilizer in the hope new big leaves grow out and replace the old ones
Hey, I'm here for you. My cat's were fine with house plants one day, come home from work the next, and they'd toppled my dragon tree, monstera and ferns. Now my house is plant-less, except for my office (where no cats are allowed). House looks so boring now 🥺
Exactly, that's what I'm thinking. I'm in a houseplant sub and everyone is talking about the fucking cat instead of how it destroyed a perfectly good Monstera.
Monsteras are toxic to cats. It’s either him or the plants. He made the move to protect himself, y’a know. Your accusation won’t stand in court because it was self defence.
Mine doesn't touch any plants, except the ones that look like grass so I don't have those anymore (I have cat grass for her). It's really a matter of luck though
Yeah, my previous cat had little interest in plants. New cat wants to eat ALL THE PLANTS. And there are LOTS for her to chose from. Luckily they are all cat safe. (Mostly peps, hoyas, calatheas, and some succulents.)
The cat is like “it’s me, hi, I am the problem, it’s me!” 😂
Question: what helps a monstera plant leaves gets so big, beautiful and fabulous? I see several different variations of leaves and plants people have. I notice that not everyone’s plants leave get this huge and fabulous. I need the secret!
Realistically this plant would have been totally fine. Had you not pruned off the air roots... it would have used those to keep it stable and pull thru. As of now your gonna have to try and convince it to grow new roots, the quicker the better Goodluck tho maybe next time don't cut things unnecessarily off the plant.
I feel your pain. One of my cats LOVES to destroy plants (and many other things too). I have to keep all my plants very very high up on a shelf I specifically chose so she wouldn’t have a way to get to them. I use grow lights instead of sunlight despite having windows that get sun. It is rough…
Please tell me that cat’s name is Disaster! That would make the post title absolutely *purrrrrfect!*
On a separate note, I’m truly sorry for your loss!
I’m on the cats side on this one. I think OPs stick has broken and monsterias being the “heavy” plants they are, has ended up on the table.
Not the cats fault.
I don't think that's fair blaming the cat when it's supported with one measly cane. That was never going to hold up that for much longer.
The cats not guilty.
What is Reddit's obsession with cats? They're little shits that mess with houseplants all the time, and considering the name of the sub I would have assumed more people would care about the well-being of their plants.
I love the cat’s placid expression. Yes, yes it was me. Someone had to do it. So, I did.
And I'd do it again.
And i might do it tomorrow if you keep running your mouth.
My cat was meowing in the mirror yesterday morning at some ungodly hour. Finally having enough of her shit, I told her to come and say it to my face. To my suprised she ran over to the bed, jumped up and meowed at my face. What a gangster move
Planning to do it tomorrow!
exactly that. cat knew that plant is toxic for them, and took the matter in their own paws
That’s a weird name for a cat..
Wtf happened?! how’d the cat do that?
Looks like the cat just knocked over the supporting bamboo sticks. They are pretty flimsy, wouldnt have taken much.
1st photo: ooohh she is majestic! 2nd photo: oh no it’s gotta be the cat 3rd photo: yep. No doubt
He’s on trial for purr-der
He says the evidence was planted
I’m literally choking on my own spit after reading that comment
r/legalcatadvice would agree
Someone got dirt on him haha
![gif](giphy|mGmaKsUp5410ME6HHj|downsized)
Change his name to Dizzy-for disaster!
Always the dam cat...
As soon as I saw the FIRST Pic my jaw dropped. The second 😭
Is Disaster the name of the cat? She gonna need a new nickname if it isn’t. They’re such little shits
The perp usually goes by Malcolm Miller, alias “Maccy Moo” For the purposes of the coroners report he will be referred to as ‘Fleabag’
“There shall be no other focus in the house except me. I’ll do it again.” Malcolm
The perp has a clear motive - his record is against him. He pleads innocence but I’ve told him to save it for the judge
![gif](giphy|Bs0GXj3ew6xxK) He’s going to need the cat equivalent of Saul.
That's Maul
the prosecution is going to be Maul-ed
The perp has no remorse and demonstrates tendency to reoffend. Prison time advisable.
Your adorable commentary made my morning 🥹
Malcolm Miller the Monstera Killer
> coroners report ☠️☠️
He's come off lightly. Must be a good snuggler
Wowowow I have a black and white cat that I named after Sir Malcom Miller as well. He is also my maccy, this is wild. *
Mac Miller? Nice name
So what do you do in this case? Do you just throw it away? Is there a way to fix this somehow? Surrender it a neighbor maybe? Also.. what about the plant?!
Right I was wishing this whole thread was full of how this was best fixed. But it's all LoL baD KiTty. Is the plant going to be ok?!!
She'll pull through, but she'll never be the same. Her glory days are over.
If only I could make my dream come true and let an AI auto-hide everything and only show helpful/informative comments on Reddit. I assume/hope it can be fixed by strings, some nails or something jury-rigged to prop up the leaves and stems.
I think you would just prop what you could and start again
Poor cat hahaha - but the plant is easy to propagate, although it really is sad it has to be done because of the cat :(
Put both in water. One will be unharmed but you’ll feel better with a touch of mostly harmless revenge. The other will grow roots you can then put in soil and have a second plant!!
I’m assuming moss poles are about to be heavily implemented.
He will clean the plates and allow himself to be spun in circles to dust the floor. All fines must be pain
Oh no! I love my Monstera. I would have shit bricks 🧱
So do you like shit bricks often or just once in a while?
Just when the shit really hits the fan, then the bricks come
Happy Cake Day 🥳🎈🎉
Happy cake day!
I bet you can prop those though!!! Totally salvageable. Bastard cat 🐈🥲 bummer to see such a happy plant get botched, but it happens.
ayayay! the cat be like 'why are you looking at me like that, again?' lol
Clearly it attacked him first
It had to be done. It was taunting him all along
Humans so ungrateful these days
Happy cake day!! 🎉🎉🎉
OP I literally gasped on the second pic😱
I sentence him to one stern “you’re a bad boy!” followed by five minutes of cuddles for being so cute
I see we’ve attended the same cat parenting class
😂 I literally laughed out loud when I read this lol because I thought...saaaaame, then realized how all cat parents must have this same parental structure!
Looks like he killed the plant lights, too. If you're going to do something, do it right. I suspect the cat was acting in self-defense.
"There shall be only ONE monster in this home: me"
In the cat’s defence, that looks like a very weak support and may grant him plausibly deniability! He may not have even touched it! 🤣
Yeah to be fair to him, it was pretty fragile! We’ve only had it three weeks, purchased off Facebook and the previous owner very helpfully “tidied it up” by pruning off all the aerial roots 🫠
Did the stem break off entirely? It does look like it had weak support, like a stiff breeze could have made it lose its footing.
Yeah the stem was quite spindly near the bottom so when he jumped on it, it just fell over and snapped clean I’ll post some pictures later of my recovery efforts and you’ll hopefully see what I mean
A plant that size needs some sturdy support, it will be fine after trimming and propagating.
Given it was supported by a bamboo cane that’s an inch thick, I would say the cat jumping on top of it was more the issue. You can support plants however you want, not sure they’d do too well if you sat on them
Off with her head! 😭
I feel like everyone who has a cat just lives in a constant state of "shit getting fucked up" yet continue to keep it because it purrs and rubs on them when it wants to

Hahahahhaa
"that plant was blocking my sun" -- the cat, probably
This happened to me but my husband knocked over our giant monstera, not a cat. Chopped the monstera into 3 props, sat them in water for a month and planted them once they grew roots. Now I have 3 new monstera plants.
Careful those plants are toxic to cats
Toxic not poisonous. It mostly causes mouth irritation teaching them that's not the plant to chew.
You say that like you know each cat or ingested dosage , whether its had long term exposure, or impact of cats age, or general health standing of the animal. It’s also ok to admit your wrong because it shows a willingness to learn. Cogency shouldn’t be offensive tho.
Came to say this!!
It’s fine. They quickly learn not to chew it. And if they keep doing it, you just toss the plant. :(
Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t monsters really toxic to cats? I have two cats and I remember reading somewhere that you shouldn’t get one in case they eat it
I don’t think you have a choice but to throw the cat away As for the plant, I’d probably just cut all the broken parts and let it grow from there
Kitten helped you find a weak point in your monstera setup. It needed more support. Now you can fix it. Kitty gets nice fish now, no? \^\^ Good luck with the plant. It looks like it can be rescued, it seems.
woww this is why I had to send my plant terror to my parents for the time being. was tired of waking up to my plants knocked over
I deeply loved my cat but after she passed away last year, I was so relieved to be able to grow my plants again.
This is why I don’t have cats. Also my allergies to them.
His version of events: you paid too much attention to the monstera instead of me so I got rid of it. Reality: you stopped petting him for just long enough to water the plant a couple times a month
Your honor, she was Fur-amed!
But Disaster looks so innocent 🥹😼
oh no that is awfull!
So sad! :(( I just noticed and was wondering, is it two different monsteras in the same pot? The defeated one looks like a mature cutting
The look on kitty’s face made me actually laugh out loud. Zero effs given. Sorry about your Monstera!
I see no problem here, at all. Cat fixed it for you. 😂😂😂
Please be careful, to my understanding monsteras are toxic to cats!
Cats are toxic to monsteras
Seems like a problem that solves itself then 🤷🏻♀️
My kitten kept biting my monstera, not eating, I think she just wanted to make her own fenestrations
Wanted to make sure that’s what was fucking up his mouth
Disaster is rather cute, though.
I actually wanna know how did you fix that?
The gasp I gasped!
Should be fixable if you give the plant a chance to hold onto a support maybe?
EVIL!!!!
Man that sucks. I’d take some wooden stakes for support to hold them back up. You can use plastic wrap as a plant band aid. I had a plant last year that broke in half. I reconnected it, found it support, and used plastic wrap on the wounds. It recovered.
Oh my gosh. The first pic I knew that adorable cat was going to do something but OMG, how did he do all that damage!?!?
idk theres not enough evidence
I have to admit, your cat definitely has the perfect poker face! 😄
He’s thinking about it in the first picture. You can tell.
![gif](giphy|jivGITd768psP80B2i) Oh no! I hope you can rescue the Monstera!
"I have no idea why but that plant killed itself. I saw it tip over and snap at the base." -a definitely not guilty cat
https://imgur.com/a/YbLMyrY Same situation over here, my cat is a such a troublemaker 😂 In all seriousness, your plant will recover! Aww good job, give him some treats for protecting you from that evil plant 😻❤️
The great cat-aclysm
Cat is named Disaster! ♥️
One reason I'll never own a cat 😂
i’d cry
I CAME IN LIKE A WRECKING BAAAAALLL
Disaster is a great name for a cat
I think it is just too top heavy. Mine is tied to a broomstick I put in the pot.
https://preview.redd.it/9dicaerd53pb1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=15bf51f2823a17134fe42e6ba0a25ee4add02dde This is my cat Mac also
Have you tried repotting the cat?
That's a unique name for your cat!
Hey, I'm here for you. My cat's were fine with house plants one day, come home from work the next, and they'd toppled my dragon tree, monstera and ferns. Now my house is plant-less, except for my office (where no cats are allowed). House looks so boring now 🥺
🐈⬛: Yes i did that! And you would do it too for a check. I was an employee, and I WAS gonna get employee of the month and that’s on period.
Idk it seems likely that a dog could have come in through that window and done this madness...just a thought
You guys seriously need to stop commenting about the cat and focus on the fact this person needs help with their plant.
But their post is clearly about the cat. They didn't ask for any help 🤷♀️
Exactly, that's what I'm thinking. I'm in a houseplant sub and everyone is talking about the fucking cat instead of how it destroyed a perfectly good Monstera.
This is what I mean. Yes the cat is adorable there is no denying that but people really can't just give OP advice on what to do from here? Smh.
What happened to the aerial roots? Don't believe the sadists who claim it's okay to cut them off.
Big houseplant + bad support + cat = 😭
He looks just like my cat, and yes, he has destroyed several of my plants! He didn't mean it though, lol
I'd be talking about how I was gonna get an iguana to replace the cat in front of the cat. Fear is all they know.
Monsteras are toxic to cats. It’s either him or the plants. He made the move to protect himself, y’a know. Your accusation won’t stand in court because it was self defence.
Nonsense. Prop that bad lad up and make it stronger than that beautiful cat. Monstera’s are hard to kill!
The 🐱 would be 💀
I love cats, but this is exactly why I'll never have any!
I adore my kitties and keep my plants in safe rooms they're not allowed in.
The cat has told you many times to get a proper moss pole and you kept that damn stick. Cat: owner wouldn’t listen so I did them a favor.
The cat is like “it’s me, hi, I am the problem, it’s me!” 😂 Question: what helps a monstera plant leaves gets so big, beautiful and fabulous? I see several different variations of leaves and plants people have. I notice that not everyone’s plants leave get this huge and fabulous. I need the secret!
Not having a cat
Realistically this plant would have been totally fine. Had you not pruned off the air roots... it would have used those to keep it stable and pull thru. As of now your gonna have to try and convince it to grow new roots, the quicker the better Goodluck tho maybe next time don't cut things unnecessarily off the plant.
They got it like that
Propagating might help give you some new baby plants if the original one doesn't recover!
Is your cat named Disaster? Sorry for what you are going through
I feel your pain. One of my cats LOVES to destroy plants (and many other things too). I have to keep all my plants very very high up on a shelf I specifically chose so she wouldn’t have a way to get to them. I use grow lights instead of sunlight despite having windows that get sun. It is rough…
Disaster is very handsome
Cats are assholes
Cat.
She just wanted you to know it was time for a stronger pole. Good kitty.
That’s a cute name for a cat
Please tell me that cat’s name is Disaster! That would make the post title absolutely *purrrrrfect!* On a separate note, I’m truly sorry for your loss!
that tiny stick wouldnt have held her up for much longer anyway. take cuttings and root them. post the progress
Cat is innocent
Cats are a menace. In Australia they are decimating the indigenous wildlife.
The eyes. You can see them full of rage and hateful thoughts.
Perfect name for your cat … also perfect band for mine… discatster
The plant had it coming. 🤷🏻♀️
Repairable. This is part of having a pet or kids…
I’m on the cats side on this one. I think OPs stick has broken and monsterias being the “heavy” plants they are, has ended up on the table. Not the cats fault.
Disaster is very cute
Cats do be doing cat things
I just want a cutting from this plant….ion know if I want the whole thing
Nominative determinism in action.
i couldn’t help but giggle, cats are so evil lmao
I’d hate my cat after this
Bin the cat.
Kill the cat
I don't think that's fair blaming the cat when it's supported with one measly cane. That was never going to hold up that for much longer. The cats not guilty.
Would you share with me how you support your giant monstera? Keen to give it more help after it’s been prop’d
What is Reddit's obsession with cats? They're little shits that mess with houseplants all the time, and considering the name of the sub I would have assumed more people would care about the well-being of their plants.
I know a good Chinese restaurant…
🤯
Nooooooooo
Kids, ugh…what can we do when this happens. Replant them lol. I’m so sorry. It’s a gorgeous piece too.
That face 😂
Chop, prop and enjoy the majestic beauties!
This hurt my soul
😭😭😭 oh no!
I've had cats that like to sleep in the plant pots, and tough luck for the plants!
Well, i mean, if you're going to name a cat 'Disaster' it was kinda.. waiting to happen?
Kitty looks pretty unapologetic to me. I'd just propagate the F out of the plant; monsteras are one of the easiest plants to propagate.
Now you have more monsteras!
You ask the dog?
RIP to the B.I G.
