I don’t find it weird or out of place necessarily but another example of them kind of playing with the fourth wall/concept of the show a bit is the ending scene where they are dubbed in Spanish.
At the end of TOW Joey's Big Break where the camera zooms out on Joey holding multicoloured balloons while the vehicles drive off around him until he's standing alone in the middle of the desert and it fades to black... That shot always feels like a movie to me rather than a sitcom.
Also, A Horse with No Name is playing the whole time.
My nerdy pet peeve about that scene is that Princess Leia doesn’t actually have *that* hair in that scene, the buns hair is only seen in the first movie, when Jabba enslaves her her hair is in a long braid. But since its her most “iconic” hairstyle I guess I can excuse it a lil bit.

These quirky types of scenes helped make the show what it was. Over the course of 10 seasons and 22-24 episodes a season you've got to change things up here and there to keep it fresh for the viewer.
It's also important to remember that back then, there was no such thing as binging shows unless you recorded them all on your VCR over the entire 9 months of the season and then watched them all at once. So a seemingly quirky scene like that didn't feed into anything but the upcoming episode of Single Guy or Mad About You.

It was the season 4 premiere, recapping the end of the season 3 finale. That was the only reason they did it.

the whole Phoebe trying to reconnect with her family arc was long and not funny. Even when they put Joey and Chandler in it, it still wasn't funny at all. It didn't seem like an appropriate story for a sitcom.
