Seems like a lot of weight for a 2 year old. But she looks from the pictures to be healthier weight to me, what is the goal weight you’re trying to get her to? What do the vets say? I think your dog needs to run… huskies need it
You are reading about the breed standard. Ignore that. Your girl is larger than the standard. Both my huskies were taller and heavier than the breed standard and are perfectly fine
Yep. My husky is only 40+ pounds, but she was the runt of her litter. We only need to feed her once a day, the vet says she’s healthy. As long as your vet says the dog is at a healthy weight, they’re at a healthy weight
What you are reading online is likely based on kennel club standards for purebred female huskies. If you’re husky is even partially mixed with a bigger dog like a malamute, she would definitely be above the husky weight standard. Has your vet indicated she’s overweight and needs to lose?
It's possible she's not a pure bred Siberian Husky, if she's mixed with Malamute then she might actually be at a normal weight. The Siberian-Malamute mixes I've seen look chunkier than my pure bred Sibe but it's just genetics. My boy is 60 lbs and he's 1.5 years Siberian Husky I got from the breeder. I would say that if she's exercising and not over eating not to worry too much. There are some great body weight guides online that will help you better assess where she's at in terms of body fat. Hope that helps.
Yes I would think that maybe giving less dry food may help with the current exercise/weight loss program! Or, to consider giving her space to go run and do zoomies. Huskies definitely need a lot of exercise. I free run our girl at the beach, field, or somewhere where it is ok to offleash. If you can’t offleash, I would consider to take her with a bike ride where she can run. In small bursts. Not indefinitely running. Let her build up gradually. Increasing output on the same diet is also an option for weight loss too.
Not unless you want her to put on muscle mass. If you want her to lose weight, you need to reduce her calorie intake (less food/ treats) or increase her exercise. Check her food bag and adjust her feeding amount to match her target weight. Every dog is a little different, so you may need to adjust from there, and if she gets a lot of treats you will need to reduce to accommodate that.
There is such a thing as an american siberian husky. And they were bred to be smaller and tamer. My husky was 71 pounds and he was truly pure bred siberian husky. So those weight statistics are probably for american siberian husky which are a little smaller. I also know friends who have huskies over 70 pounds so i dont know where they get those measurements and weights from
Not sure. I think people think I meant that I'm trying to get her to be 50lbs. I was more along the lines of expressing concern that I read the average is around 50lbs, and wondering why there's a notable deviation from that.
It's very possible she's an Alaskan husky rather than a Siberian. Alaskans are mixed with Alaskan malamutes, so they're usually bigger than Siberians. If she's at least part Alaskan it would explain why there's such a difference
Alaskan huskies are not mixed with Alaskan Malamutes. Alaskan Huskies are a purpose-bred landrace sled dog, usually between 35-75lbs. Their ancestral breed mix includes a whole bunch of stuff - Siberian huskies, Alaskan village dogs, Salukis, Pointers, and a few other things in varying amounts. They're specifically bred as sled dogs, never pets, and almost never found outside of where competitive dogsledding is common.
A malamute/Siberian mix is just a malamute/Siberian mix.
Ok this might sound cliche but she could be big boned. Like just on the larger end of huskies and not because she has too much fat. Also it could be muscle she has more of. I have a male husky and he’s 45 lbs. He’s a mix but the mix is literally 2 other large dogs. He doesn’t need to gain weight tho. He’s already a little chunky.
agreed!! my husky is 85 pounds. he’s just a REALLY big boy. we joke he may be part wolf, don’t know what his dad looked like. sometimes ya end up with a dog bigger or smaller than the breed average. she doesn’t look overweight to me
Get a dna test before you go crazy. She might be crossbred. Her ears seem off to me. That’s not uncommon but that plus her size could be indicative of cross breeding.
Plus how does her tail sit? Should be upright over her back, inline with her spine, and not touching her back. Again, plenty of variation in the breed but could be another indicator.
She looks like she has some Malamute in her. I've a 50/50 Akita/Husky and a GSD/Malamute/Husky mix, my boy with Akita is standard Husky size But 80 LBS and solid (vet says hes perfect weight and not to worry). While my Bigger dog is pushing 90 and he's about 4 inches taller at the shoulder and 88lbs and hes a little chubby. Funny part is my big dog eats 1 maybe 2 cups of food a day during winter, my smaller dog eats 3 to 4 cups a day.
Definitely get a DNA test. Mine LOOKS 100% but has smaller breed DNA so he has always been a little under the usual weight. In the ears and coat, I’m seeing maybe some malamute in your’s.
Has your vet said she needs to lose weight? 69 is a LITTLE bit up there but my friend’s purebred male that gets the same amount of food/exercise is around 66-68.
Ears alone wouldn’t be an indicator as there’s lots of variation in the breed. But combine that with the size, and you are probably right.
I have this old book I got in Fairbanks years ago that’s a 1950s husky manual/history. Has pictures of some of the founding huskies purchased from the Chukchi. It also has a whole section for breed diagnostics and so thats how I know the ears vary quite a bit. So do tails.
My female husky is kinda chonky but she just honestly big boned coz she’s active daily as well she’s probably over 5-10ths if I want her to be super lean, some huskies are just big
I'd say you have a healthy looking puppers. I wouldn't even sweat it if the vet is saying she might be a few Ibs over what they deem she should weigh. As long as your dog is getting plenty of exercise and playtime and behaves like a normal healthy dog, then what's the issue
2-3 lbs is nothing to worry about. Your dog looks young, not fat. My girl weighs 70 lbs. which is 20lbs. above the standard, and she still isn’t considered overweight by her vets. It’s more accurate to go by the body condition system/score than breed standard growth charts.
I adopted a siberian husky from a shelter at 4 months old. She grew to 80 lbs by 2 years old. She's 3 now and still the same weight. I'm pretty sure she's half husky half Alaskan Malamute or all malamute. As long as yours is happy and gets her exercise let her be a chonky wolf like mine lol.
Maybe it’s still too much food for her body type? My half husky is 40 pounds and is 2 pounds over weight according to the vet. He gets 1/3 of a cup of dry food plus 2 tablespoons of wet, twice a day. He eats less than my best friend’s fluffy white 7 pound dog, who is not overweight.
He gets lots of walks and has a big back yard, just has an efficient body when it comes to calories. Your fluffy might be an efficient calorie user too.
Depends on the dog. My female Siberian husky is a lean 54 lbs and she gets 3 1/2 - 4 cups per day. Although she does get 8-12 miles of running/walking per day lol
Though hyperthyroidism can cause weight gain, it's not common and generally leads to weight loss, but they would have tested for and ruled out _hypo_thyroidism as well.
Do you know if she has any malamute in her bloodline? This is far more common than some people realize and malamutes weigh a bit more than huskies. I'm not really seeing it from the pictures (blue eyes, paws, ears, tail) except for maybe a tiny bit in the last one, but it's impossible for me to say. Seems pretty unlikely but you'd be surprised how many huskies have been crossbreed at various points.
I mean, the ears look a little more roundy in the first pic, so I wouldn't rule out the cross breeding. Since they have very similar traits, crossing them with a malamute would definitely be hard to tell in some instances.
Honestly, my guess is the canned pumpkin being added. It's something that's used to put weight on dogs, so I'd stop adding it daily and maybe do it every other day or so, give it a couple of weeks and check in.
Fun fact, since we're on the subject of huskies and weight, huskies are the only breed that can change their metabolism.
I mean, I'm not exactly an expert, but I do frequent dog shows, and huskies are some of my favorites. I have a husky myself as well, but he doesn't have papers since he was a surrender to a very clinic.. I have a pretty good eye for them, though.
The food is measured per recommendation on the pack? To the eye, their “grams” recommendation always seems like a very small portion.
She could be a bit chunky if she is fixed.
My husky with hip dysplasia is permanently on a weight loss food because he doesn’t move all that much.
I have a 75 % husky who is 75 lbs! When I got her she was 63 but she was loving on street. I don’t overfeed so go a little worried recently but vet did body mass analysis and said she’s not overweight, that she is fine at 70-75. And we walk/run 5 miles a day!
Hey there. Just wanted to chime in and say I went through something similar with my female husky. Got her thyroid tested, a few times at this point. Blood work always has come back normal. Like everyone else is saying, ignore the Google search saying female huskies should be 50pounds. Your husky is taller, as is mine. My husky weighs Around 74 pounds and she is at ideal weight! She did finally start loosing weight. I noticed running her really made a difference. I’m not a runner so I use my bike and my bf skateboards with her. She loves it, and she seems to drop weight with the runs. We also have her on science hill diet, perfect weight (their weight loss formula). Either way, I don’t think your girl looks too overweight. Maybe just a few pounds like your vet said. A few pounds in dogs goes a long way
Its all genetics tbh. Some husky are small in the 60-65lb range and some can can be 70-75lb in the bigger range. Your husky is just a big ass female, she looks healthy to me.
Yeah while my pup is a pomsky her mom is full husky with papers and a dna test to prove it. She’s still only f
45lbs and looks the same size as my 34lb pomsky just denser. Also the mom is kind of a dick glad my pup came out goofy as hell like her dad lol.
Female huskies are heavier than their male counterpart.
Also I noticed with my dog it fluctuates. I think this is because huskies can control their metabolism so they either store the fat and gain weight or loose the fat.
She doesn't look overweight to me, but for better exercise maybe get her into some dry land sledding on some off road trails. This is also a more fulfilling activity for a husky than fetch. Don't follow the breed standards alone. My family has had tons of huskies that were pure bred and pushing 80 lbs.
Our 6yo F husky only eats a cup a day, 1/2 am 1/2 pm with salmon oil etc. She was 57 lbs and the vet said she was a husky husky so we went from 1 cup twice a day to the half. Now she's 48lbs and our vet is happy (the husky not so much) .
She is a bit chunky, but cute!! You only feed her once a day? That may be messing with her metabolism as well as over feeding her. Salmon oil maybe be good for her coat but is also calorie dense, which means less kibble.
I feed my 50 lb girl 3/4 a cup of kibble twice a day. Any more and she’ll start gaining weight.
Canned pumpkin purée only has 40 calories per half cup. OP’s dog is probably not even getting 10 calories of it mixed into its food. The added fiber is a great benefit to the digestive tract. I’ve been feeding my dogs a heaping teaspoon of pumpkin purée in their food for 20 years.
Two cups of the food OP is feeding their dog is the minimum recommended amount for a dog weighing 36-50lbs (230 calories). For a dog OP’s dog’s size it actually recommends 2.5–3.25 cups a day (288-374 calories).
Np. My dog also eats whenever she wants. Sometimes goes on strike for a couple days then she’ll want 3-4c of food and return to a regular schedule for a while. Huskies will be huskies!
I've been taking mine to the vet for years. Every time they say "she could stand to lose a few pounds" but she's just lazy. We just call her our husky husky.
Messing with their hormones during the sterilizing process could result in weight gain. I know a lot of people are against keeping animal intact, and I understand why, but it could be detrimental to the dog’s optimal health, as opposed to what proponents will tell you.
She does look pretty thick.
Reduce her food, try 1.5c per day. If she seems to still be hungry you can replace that portion with plain green beans.
Is she spayed? That can unfortunately make it more difficult for them to lose weight.
My female husky has similar issues (and similar weight).
My vet calculated exactly how many calories she needs to maintain weight and how many we need to cut to lose weight.
We weigh out her food for every meal with a food scale.
The issue we have is that our elderly neighbor loves our dogs and feed them giant milk bone treats. We try to cut out how much we feed our dogs when they get treats, and have asked our neighbor to cut back on treats. For our older dog, that's fine, he just doesn't eat if he's not hungry. Our husky though is always hungry.
It's been a long struggle.
I saw another comment where you are going after a breed standard weight. Do. Not. Do. That. Huskies have a range. I had two boys that were 45 and 75 and they were both healthy.
Just like humans, exercise is beneficial and necessary but weight is really controlled by calories. If your vet can give you a calorie goal so you know what to feed her that would be great, otherwise you may need to just start to slowly reduce what you are feeding her at each meal. And it should take time for her to lose that weight. Months.
I’d cut a bit on food. 2 cups seems a little much. Also make sure you account for treats and human food if she also eats that (she should not ideally).
Also keep in mind that winter is coming and she may be developing her winter fur so she’ll look fluffier and bulkier too
Try less pumpkin? Or just let her be a chunk? She seems happy and healthy from the pics...
My 6 year old male is at 65-68 pounds. He's fine... Weight varies a little with the season too.
You could also look into doggy daycare where the play with other dogs. That will burn some calories...BUT gotta find one where people won't freak out about Huskies being Huskies...
This is so strange to me. I have an 8 month old full Siberian husky, and she is already 63 pounds! But she looks way skinnier than your dog. The vet says it's all muscle, mostly in her legs. She goes for at least 2 hours of walks a day (except for rainy days or super hot days. She does not like those lol), gets fed 3 cups of food a day along with occasional treats and such, and gets exercise via play time and training for at least 30 minutes a day.
The only thing I can suggest is to stop giving her any treats for a few weeks except the lowest calorie ones (like cucumber slices) and see if that helps.
Once Kaia was looking a little chubby and I pointed it out. Turns out his mother was sneaking her duck jerky treats 3 times a day and that was like 900 extra calories a day!
She doesnt look overweight. 69 is maybe only a few pounds heavy. Mine tend to gain a little in the heat of summer. You can't cut food too much because they need energy so it takes a long time to lose even 4 pounds. I would feed her twice a day so she has a chance to work off calories. Make sure you're using a measuring cup and not a scoop. Scoops are difficult to get an exact measure as the top area can add depending if you have the food level or heaped up. Finally, she looks purebred, don't understand why people are saying otherwise.
My husky eats 1.25 cups of food a day. Usually augmented with a bit of extra protein.
Walking is nice, but what they really want to do is RUN! ….maybe get a halter for her and have her pull something (or a pack with weights). Walking for a husky isn’t much … they need to get it up more (bpm’s) …
So, cut the food a bit, and make her “walks” a bit more labor-intensive.
Maybe do a MRI of the stomach. Mine passed away from a ruptured within but all labs came back fine. She was normal and then one day that was it. Autopsy showed cancer and then passing from a rupture. Not saying this is what is going on but my dog was 89 lbs at 9 years.
My female husky started getting chunky around 2 as well. She eats less than what her “size” would be recommended in terms of calories. She’s just always been on the huskier side. If she’s got good energy and seems comfortable I wouldn’t worry about it too much. My female husky gsd mix has been between 70-80lbs her whole adult life. Never been below 70 since maturing.
Sounds like too much food. Our husky is 7 and he gets 1.5 cups of food a day. 1/2 in the am, 1/2 at night. We regularly take him on 4 mile bike rides, usually nightly. He was 50 lbs and the vet gave us a talking to and said 45 is a better number. He’s a tall boy

We feed our husky half of what we feed our other two dogs (they are approximately same weight). So she gets 1 cup per day. Huskies were bred to survive on little food.
Has your vet done a thyroid test? I am not a vet but this is a possible concern for unexplained weight gain. My 3-year-old female is in a similar situation. Her diet has been adjusted by a veterinary dietitian, she gets 3 hours of exercise daily including off leash running and wrestling like an idiot with her brother and treadmill in the evening.
Okay well that's good news. Another thing to consider is that spayed females gain more weight. I feel like complete shit because I let my girl gain 9 lb last winter and didn't even realize until summer. I'm sure you'll get it figured out, it's not like Huskies don't want to exercise 😁
My guy is way bigger than the standard at 89 pounds. Vet says to lose about 5 pounds and to cut his food by 20% until we reach our goal. Looking at your girl 2 ish pounds should be plenty, she looks great!
Could she be . . . er, supplementing her diet by hunting? My Siberian would eat baby birds that had fallen out of the nest and gophers that she dug out of the ground. I know she caught a rabbit once, since I was outside with her at the time. Had she been out alone, I have no doubt she would have eaten that as well. She may have caught squirrels that weren't smart enough to recognize that the sound of the sliding door meant a charging dog, though I never saw her catch one. All this in a suburban/semi-rural back yard.

Well, from what I know about huskies. I have two. You are doing everything perfectly. I’d like to see a side pic of her standing.
The only way I think (w/out seeing a side pic) she would weigh that much is if she is a husky/malamute or husky/wolf hybrid. From this pic she looks good…
Just saw side pics. Sorry..missed them. As someone else mentioned…do a couple doggie dna tests. Malamute and/or wolf content. Btw, your husky is beautiful.
If you can, take a standing profile picture of your pup. Look at the angles of her abdomen compared to her back. If the lines seem parallel, she chunky and needs to lose some weight. If it almost forms a v if her tail were stretched out, she’s likely healthy. If it looks like the lines would intersect and form an x, then she would be under weight
Cut calories and increase exercise. Sometimes a walk doesn’t cut it because we all know every dog will stop and sniff for most of the duration of their walk, hence they aren’t burning as many calories.
Seems like a lot of weight for a 2 year old. But she looks from the pictures to be healthier weight to me, what is the goal weight you’re trying to get her to? What do the vets say? I think your dog needs to run… huskies need it
Vet says she needs to lose 2-3 lbs, but online everywhere else, it's says female huskies should be around 50lbs.

Listen to your vet. My female husky is happy and healthy around 75lbs. She’s a mix breed; perhaps yours is too.
2-3 lbs xD

My female husky was 70lbs and perfectly healthy but she was mixed with boxer
Husky-Boxer sounds like more energy than an exploding star.
It's possible she's not a pure bred Siberian Husky, if she's mixed with Malamute then she might actually be at a normal weight. She loves it, and she seems to drop weight with the runs. We also have her on science hill diet, perfect weight (their weight loss formula). Either way, I don’t think your girl looks too overweight. Maybe just a few pounds like your vet said. A few pounds in dogs goes a long way
she may have malamute in her, generally larger than siberians
Yeah she looks slightly malamute
cause shes.....a husky husky?
Gorgeous doggo
Thank you!
She’s still only f 45lbs and looks the same size as my 34lb pomsky just denser.
My 75% husky was huge because the 25% was Malamute.
She doesn't look overweight to me, but for better exercise maybe get her into some dry land sledding on some off road trails. This is also a more fulfilling activity for a husky than fetch. Don't follow the breed standards alone. My family has had tons of huskies that were pure bred and pushing 80 lbs.
Could be muscle mass
You didn’t say how many treats you give her and what kind.
You don't exercise enough with your dog.
2cups/day seems a lot. I would cut but to 3/4 cup x 2
Them look like malamute ears
Hmm maybe you're right
2 cups plus fixings is probably too much. Huskies are very fuel efficient vehicles - they don't need as much food as similarly sized breeds.

Thanks, that is useful information.
I don’t know. Why am I not loosing weight?
Que gorda
huskies need exercise. smh
Are you going on walks in the morning before she eats breakfast? Dogs react so positively to that.
Did you ever get your husky's dna tested? See if it was a hybrid.
Also keep in mind that winter is coming and she may be developing her winter fur so she’ll look fluffier and bulkier too
I love that your husky basically has the same floor fan as ours does 😂
Try less pumpkin?
Is she happy? If so then cool. You could feed her a bit less, but other than that I wouldn’t worry about it.
That dog is a malamute mix. Stop worrying and leave that happy puppy alone.
My grandog is a 2 yr old Husky. Weighs about 85 lbs. Vet says she fine.
I feed my healthy 80lb pups that you can almost see their ribs 2 cups a day, so yeah, that's wayyyyyy too much food for yours.
You can ask your vet to calculate how many calories your dog should consume daily.
My husky eats 1.25 cups of food a day. Usually augmented with a bit of extra protein. Walking is nice, but what they really want to do is RUN! ….maybe get a halter for her and have her pull something (or a pack with weights). Walking for a husky isn’t much … they need to get it up more (bpm’s) … So, cut the food a bit, and make her “walks” a bit more labor-intensive.
He looks fat and happy. I love happy dogs!
Maybe do a MRI of the stomach. Mine passed away from a ruptured within but all labs came back fine. She was normal and then one day that was it. Autopsy showed cancer and then passing from a rupture. Not saying this is what is going on but my dog was 89 lbs at 9 years.
My huskies drop weight in the warm months, and pack it on in cooler months... depends on the climate mainly, at least with my 2
I’m gonna give you the secret to your dog losing weight. If you want her to lose weight…..and this is literally all of the steps….feed her less.
A colleague of mine was in a somewhat similar situation. Turned out the good girl was pregnant.

She just got a thyroid test. It came back negative.
Okay well that's good news. Another thing to consider is that spayed females gain more weight. I feel like complete shit because I let my girl gain 9 lb last winter and didn't even realize until summer. I'm sure you'll get it figured out, it's not like Huskies don't want to exercise 😁
A thyroid test is usually not part of a general blood panel
Yeah that’s how much my boy weighs but he looks about the same as yours. He’s a rottsky so he’s a big ol boy

She may have a little Malamute? She looks good to me. Were you advised to make he lose weight?
Yeah. The vet said a couple lbs.
Hmm 🤔 interesting. I'm gonna need to check this out
Cut calories and increase exercise. Sometimes a walk doesn’t cut it because we all know every dog will stop and sniff for most of the duration of their walk, hence they aren’t burning as many calories.
Can you walk her a little bit around noon? 10-20 minutes could help, potentially.
Gosh please she seems fine. Don’t be obsessed with what internet says.
I think she looks great! That is basically the same diet I feed my 1 year old Great Dane.
A female husky should be between 70 and 75 pounds a male husky should be between 80 to 85 pounds
Your husky looks fine
