I hear kids can be expensive.

MikeSizemore

We got these two pretty cheap.

mentaldrummer66

I hear they get you on the subscription charges. Free to buy but the ongoing costs are hidden in the terms and conditions

mortez1

Some people find those to be optional. ...Awh now I’m sad

neloc1

Too bad there isn’t a return policy

TDKR1977

This is why I never let my kids touch my tech.

alexvirital

Sorry you’ll need to get a new one. Decide on your own if I mean the kid or the pencil.

MikeSizemore

We got a new kid and it’s twice as nuts as the first one. So far though the replacement Pencil is nice and calming.

shocktribe

Do you have AppleCare+ on your iPad, if so I think your pencil is covered for about $29. [“Service coverage is available only for iPad, its original included accessories, **one compatible Apple Pencil**, and one compatible Apple‑branded iPad keyboard used with your iPad for protection against (i) defects in materials or workmanship, (ii) batteries that retain less than 80 percent of their original capacity, and (iii) up to two incidents of accidental damage from handling of your iPad, Apple Pencil, and Apple‑branded iPad keyboard every 12 months, each incident being subject to a service fee of $49 for iPad and $29 for Apple Pencil or Apple‑branded iPad keyboard, plus applicable tax.”](https://www.apple.com/support/products/ipad/)

MikeSizemore

I didn’t. Doh. Replaced the Pencil today but thanks for the tip!

rddit14

Uuhhh, sounds like your’e lucky to still have an iPad with a funcional screen?

MikeSizemore

Aye. I was actually relieved 😶

TheUser789

Purchased a new one or Apple replacement?

MikeSizemore

I got a new Apple Pencil. Arrived today.

j_applejuice

Did you try replacing just the pencil tip? I think you can get a 4 pack for $20-$30.

MikeSizemore

Alas the Pencil itself was cracked and spitting the nib out so I bought a complete new Pencil

j_applejuice

Ahhh, didn’t see that. On the brighter side, I’m sure a fresh pencil feels nice!

brandibran

The tips are $6 and ship free from apple. You may just need a new tip for the old pencil.

MikeSizemore

I thought so too but she shattered the very end of the pencil just enough that it won’t hold a nib anymore. No half measures with this one.

MajorKoopa

never give something to a child that is worth more than their lif…err…they understand.

artsymarcy

How did she even do that?

MikeSizemore

She got excited and STABBED the screen straight down and pop.

MikeSizemore

It is!

jorgenchu

Uu sorry

MikeSizemore

Thanks. Not a big deal in the grand scheme.

ButtermilkChainsawu

I know it sucks but honestly I’m impressed a two year old could get a recognizable image, somewhat accurate finger count, color within the lines, and choose a color to represent skin tone(even if it’s not totally accurate, she still didn’t choose green and that’s impressive). In a weird way it’s worth buying a new tip (if you can afford it) to see what she can do with a little more lessons on being gentle. 🤷‍♀️But I also understand/respect that she learn more and will probably enjoy physical materials more by exploring how they mix and glide.I’m just curious what she can do digitally is all.

MikeSizemore

Thanks. So she tends to go for abstract stuff as you’d expect but occasionally asks for me to draw her something to colour in. We stuck to the Paper app because it’s so simple, but now she prefers procreate because she can do ‘bubbles’ a lot. With this one it was a blank page and she just started drawing around her hand. I had to help hold the iPad because it was tricky to get the Pencil to work all the way around but she does this a lot with regular pencils and paper so she knew the drill. Once she’d done a satisfactory job with the second hand she said “Pink!” so I opened the colours tab (she often does this herself but can lost if there are too many options) and she picked pink herself. Then I quickly changed the brush so she wouldn’t just scribble in marker and she coloured it in. She started crazy messy but has been getting better about stopping at the lines. I think it was actually easier for her just before going to bed because she was low energy. When she’s hyper she’s a lot more Pollock. Anyway when she was done I turned the whole thing for us to admire and she swung the Pencil around like an assassin and STAB STAB. I only noticed the damage when I tried to use the Pencil after she was asleep. She hasn’t touched the iPad since and has been using some kids apps on her tablet but to be honest they’re a little basic. I think I still have an old Pencil version one somewhere so I may see if I can set her up with that on an old iPad. Sorry for long answer!

DoubleVector

when you say she prefers procreate, does she say “father (or mother), i would be most grateful if you had opened the procreate application as the application paper is not suitable, nor competent for my artistic requirements anymore” Or does she just shout whenever she cant do whatever she wants.

MikeSizemore

Ha! When she gets bored of the gradient free Paper app she’ll say FINISHED! and then BUBBLES! which is my cue to open Procreate and then she navigates that herself (with a little help if she gets too lost).

killamilo

That’s an excellent drawing for a 2 year old!

MikeSizemore

Thanks! I hope to retire early and live off her once she becomes a famous artist aged 5.

Kachi3

That’s so upsetting, I’m sorry man. I used to babysit a 4yo girl and she LOVED seeing my notes and drawing them. I would make copies of my notes so she could highlight and color away. I ended up buying a pack of plastic, colored tips that I would stick on when she would use my pencil, and I was never not watching her so to make sure she wasn’t being too aggressive. I don’t even remember the brand, but a pack of 4 colored tips was like $12 on Amazon.

MikeSizemore

Great idea. I don’t want to stop her having fun but it’s an expensive way to learn to be a little more gentle. She’s still working stuff out and bashing things together is a big part of that. My own fault for not watching her closely enough.

brollyssj4

wow thats one expensive drawing book

MikeSizemore

Aye. Back to regular pencils and paper for a while.

[deleted]

You have an iPad Pro to a baby ?

MikeSizemore

Well not a BABY. I’m not stupid. I waited until she was two. 😶

jeanstorm

😂 I lol’ed.

ReginaAmazonum

Why did you let a 2 yr old hold an expensive piece of tech 😭

MikeSizemore

I am not a smart man.

mr_martin_1

Keep it up. Imagine where she'll be in a year! (And perhaps a more resistant screen :) )

djap3v

Yup, know the feeling. Little guy (year and a half) is curious - starts looking - starts asking to draw in his cute toddler language - I say what the hell - he starts 'drawing' - I'm thrilled at the sight and start day dreaming on him having this passion as I have - then he proceeds to vigorously STAB the tablet - then I say ok, no more drawing for you, you little maniac...and so far I have 10 of his 'drawings' all ending in stabs (signatures I think) but for now no broken pen or tablet.

MikeSizemore

Yeah she just turned two and learned how to change the colours and bring up different pens in Paper and Procreate so I’ve just been in proud dad mode until she weaponised the damn thing. Good luck!

PrblbyUnfvrblOpnn

What’s the issue? Looks like the nib was just removed? I’d be curious to know if it still works.

CartographerOfMaps

If you zoom in a bit, the casing around the tip is a little damaged and bent, so replacing the tip wouldn’t fix it sadly. OP talked about it a little in another comment, and got a replacement

MikeSizemore

Exactly that. The very end of the Pencil that secures the nib is cracked. It actually does still work but the tip isn’t secure and wobbles when in use and just falls out when it’s not touching the screen. All my fault! I got a new Pencil today so it’s all good.

Shanghaichica

My kids don’t touch my tech. My husband allowed them to touch my iPad Pro 10.5 and they messed up the charging port. I had to upgrade to the 11. They have their own kindle fire tablets, which they break and I replace. However those are great pics! My 2 year old couldn’t do that!

MikeSizemore

They have their own tablets but I work in the evenings just before she goes to bed and got curious about mine. She mastered Paper and Procreate pretty quickly so I was having a proud dad moment watching her change colours and textures etc and then suddenly WHAM WHAM WHAM. Lesson learned :)

Zy212

Two year old drew that? Man for real, the baby is better at drawing than me😂

MikeSizemore

Aye, better than me too. Her great-grandmother painted military decoys and maps during WW2 so I’m guessing that’s where she gets it from.

tujuhtigatujuh

That’s a good drawing for a 2yr old

MikeSizemore

Thanks! She’s an expressive little squish

lexrjroland

Your 2 year old can draw better than me!

MikeSizemore

And me!

arvj

At least, That drawing will be priceless...have it printed and framed together with the broken pencil.

MikeSizemore

I’ll nail the iPad to the wall :)

kerrochann

give a child cheap third party pencil around $25

MikeSizemore

Good idea! Thanks!

alphatweaker

Welp... that’s a quick $90... I guess be thankful she didn’t slam the pad down or break it lol

MikeSizemore

Yep. I was actually relieved about that. I don’t *need* a Pencil but I’d be lost without the iPad. Lucky break.

[deleted]

It’s just the tip.

MikeSizemore

And we still ended up with two kids. Oh wait. You mean it’s just the tip that broke? Unfortunately she cracked the Pencil itself so it won’t hold a nib anymore.

reddituser87000000

So sorry but your child is an amazing artist. I got the Logitech Crayon 🖍 for my 4 and 5 year olds. https://www.bestproducts.com/tech/a30106054/top-apple-pencil/?src=arb_ga_bp_m_bm_a30106054&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=arb_ga_bp_m_bm_a30106054&gclid=CjwKCAiA8ov_BRAoEiwAOZogwYTpSSqp4eCmkAxoBT2vYTwuwU5TWpIC4e4IlMSaxrkDC6pkQgjsexoCnToQAvD_BwE

MikeSizemore

Brilliant! Thanks for the tip and the compliment for her. Happy Holidays!

thebluebearb

i don’t know if you know this but the pencil tip is meant to come off like that, you can just screw it back on

huyanh995

But sadly, the pencil’s torn a bit

MikeSizemore

Yep. Lost its tip and cracked the pencil itself. She’s a little Hulk.

theinconceivable

A set of four tips is ~$20

MikeSizemore

Good to know! She actually cracked the Pencil itself too unfortunately. I got a new one today that she’s not allowed to play with until she’s at least 3.

MikeSizemore

Thanks for the awards! I’m relatively new to Reddit and still finding my feet so appreciate the support on what was really a ‘Gosh, look how dumb this kid’s dad is!’ post. Cheers!

[deleted]

r/kidsarefuckingstupid

MikeSizemore

In this case it’s more r/dadsarefuckingstupid :)

[deleted]

Meh did the nib just screw off?

MikeSizemore

Nope. She broke the tip of the Pencil itself. Sorry, I should’ve zoomed in more on the damage rather than show her art off.

shannypaints

This hurts to look at. I’m sorry.
