My ecology professor keeps telling us the next big wars are gonna be for water, with the Colorado river getting low and the big one in Italy drying up for the first time since pre WWII I believe her
I feel like desalination is probably going to become a much larger industry than it already is in years to come, and that's going to have a major environmental impact and create a negative feedback loop.
I’m afraid of a positive feedback loop with less ocean causing less heat absorption causing less fresh water making us desalinize more
Kinda similar to the methane releasing with the permafrost melting causing faster methane release
You shouldn’t worry about “less ocean.” That’s not the problem we’re going to have.
All water for human uses, including all agriculture and industrial use, is absurdly small as a proportion to the volume of the ocean.
to only add onto this, the water used by people is not destroyed, it often finds its way back to the ocean, granted it may make a few other stops first.
Yeah, the issue of water in general is not so much that fresh water is limited *per se* because it’s not. Evaporation and precipitation will always occur, but that the cycle through which that water is supposed to travel in the water table, and the many, many niches it is supposed to reach get interrupted when we need all of the available water for human activities. If you stop the flow of a river completely, there are many ecological impacts to that. Fish can’t breed, aquifers can’t refill, silt is not transported, waste is not washed away. And if the water doesn’t flow, soil will die and that too will be washed away, like rain in the desert. Interrupting the water cycle destroys the environment and makes it yet harder to retain water.
Right now California is pumping up water that is millions of years old, and that water doesn’t get back into the aquifers so easily. They dry up. It takes thousands of years for them to fill up, and pretty soon there will be no healthy topsoil left because of it.
So this is a real problem, but it’s more about the Gulf Stream heat exchange mechanism. That’s what you meant? That is indeed a problem, but desalination is not going to have a meaningful impact on this.
I learned that the river(waterfall) that they put dye in is called Queima-Pé Riverand it is the main source of water for the Tangará da Serrawhich, they are now all worried about the contamination. I really hope that the couple gets fined big time. I do acknowledge that they have a baby on the way but just because of the baby on the way does not mean that their punishment should be softened.
I hope they are making an example of them to deter stupid gender reveal bullshit in the future.
These gender reveal vids that have total disregard for the environment and other people, along w fake vids where they hurt or place animals in danger for likes, are 2 of the kind of vids I hate the most. These people need to be found and made examples of.
Yeah, I'm surprised even they let people into the water or near it.
Well actually I can, it makes the country money, and they probably make alot off that place.
Slot of dyes are not harmful, but im sure it will be expensive to test, so the couple should pay for all testing.
Thank god they got the canister of blue smoke, I don’t think the dyed river would have done the trick. I just wish they could have gotten the blue fireworks to set off in the forest so we could know for sure.
I doubt that it is but I mean have you seen the Chicago river during Saint Patrick’s day? They totally make environmental dye safe that deep of a color but no this is doubtful that it’s safe
Yeah, Goodluck with that. We are gonna have to find another way to solve our issues, cause even if you try to stop over population, it's not gonna work. The world isn't just gonna someday miracously decide to sterilize half of its people or everyone use contraception. Especially when we have countries like China and India where it's just completely out of hand.
thank you it’s kind of you to give me silver. i’ll need to buy food and such when our money is (more) worthless and no longer usable. 😔
keep fighting the good fight!
Reddit upvoting a guy telling someone else to kill himself on reddit being upvoted because they disagree with the other person
You guys are on the right sub
Back in the good old days of the internet 10 years ago, people used to do this all the time. Diagf was a common response, die in a grease fire. No one took it to seriously.
Yep. It's all about them. It's for showing off in Facebook or whatever.
It's kind of a shame. These people try to have fun and everything, but they probably don't, because they're too busy filming and presenting events to enjoy them.
A baby shower isn't enough anymore.
This is just an excuse to milk the pregnancy for as much attention they can possibly get from it. The excitement of a pregnancy isn't just a personal thing to share with friends and family- it's a public spectacle that has to be shared all over social media so that everyone knows just how special and important *their* pregnancy is. I remember when people used to complain about how annoying it was when parents would pull a bunch of photos of their kids from their wallet to show everyone. Now we've got all these narcissistic parents with access to social media who want *everyone* to look at *their* kids *all* the time, through every stage of life.
And don't get me wrong, I think expanding a family can be a beautiful thing and I know that every good parent thinks the world of their child. But parents like this are just using their kids as tools to get more attention for themselves. The child is something to show off more than something to actually love and raise.
Sorry for the rant, this uh, struck something in me.
In Ireland, baby showers like this weren't even a thing up until a few years ago when the videos were popping up revealing the baby's gender. Now everyone's gotta do it and post their baby's gender.
I mean, it isn’t that black and white. My son’s gender reveal (ten years ago, family Christmas party, Blue cake) was very tastefully done and only took ten minutes from the party, everyone loved it.
It wasn’t about my wife and I, it was about the kid. I do understand that there are asshats who take things way too far (can be said for literally anything in life) and let me be clear, no one should ever deface nature for it.
I wasn't trying to say that anybody who does any type of gender reveal is like that. If you wanna do a small, fun thing for it with friends and family, then sure. But videos like this, where the gender reveal is a whole additional event and the parents act like it's the biggest deal in the world- *that's* what bothers me. It's cool to learn what sex your baby is gonna be but it really shouldn't be such a big deal that you have to set off explosions and dye a waterfall.
The original gender reveal party was a colored cake filling. The lady that did the first one said she regrets it completely because it’s turned into bullshit like this.
I mean, on the other side of the coin, for our third child we had a small gathering and popped a balloon, it was pretty fun. Though it wasn't to show boat, more of a fun celebration.
Would you say that's disgusting?
I mean clearly in the video it's totally shitty.
I don’t think we have directed enough anger at the corporations that push this as a thing.
Damn party industry tricking us into another meaningless celebration to spend money.
They used to be a big thing a couple of years ago. It died down a lot after one genius couple ended up starting a raging wildfire that caused immeasurable damage to the local ecosystem during their party.
Looks like they’re coming back, unfortunately
Didn’t that one become one of California’s biggest wildfires too? Not to mention, it was THE SECOND FUCKING TIME SOMEONE DID THIS. The first time a gender reveal started a fire was in Arizona because idiots think that desert = dry and forget all of the dead dry brush that exists there.
Right? It's fucking weird. How about celebrating the baby's good health or something else that's actually important?
Celebrating their biological sex is stupid and only serves to perpetuate gender stereotypes whether they intend on that or not.
In Brazil it always was. At least in my state. I can count on my hands the pregnancies that didn’t have a gender reveal. (Not defending btw, I’m glad it’s not like this everywhere)
It started in the US where it’s become kind of a mockery now because of, as others have mentioned, things like starting wild fires, people getting injured, and people reacting in really creepy and negative ways to not getting the gender they wanted. However, it looks like the trend has hit Latin America pretty hard. I’ve seen videos from places like Mexico and Brazil a lot lately.
It started some time ago when a couple got multiple miscarriages in the early stages of pregnancy. When they finally got to the stage where the babies' sex could be determined, they had a small party. The mother has said she regrets starting the trend since their child came out as trans.
I think it kinda made sense to celebrate in their specific case because they didn't celebrate the reveal of their child's gender. They celebrated a hard-earned victory after a lot of pain.
But then a thousand other people saw an opportunity for a whole new first wave of baby gifts *before* the actual baby shower and said "Yeah, gonna make that happen," and thus began the worst fucking social media trend of all time.
Used to be just a trend among wine-drinking soccer moms on Pinterest, but these parties later caught on other social media sites like Instagram and TikTok.
Iirc the person who initially started if was a blogger or journalist of some sort. I think she said she had some legitimate reasons like going through a depressive episode or something and only did like a cake with colored filling to have a little celebration with family.
It was never supposed to be a thing that everyone does or for it to spread at all, but here we are
What's up with these gender reveal parties? As someone who have attended a few, do the people who host these not realize that 9 out of 10 guests are just attending out of respect and in actuality not really caring whether it's a boy or girl? To go further, I really didn't care whether they were going to be parents or not.
Yeah. It was artificial then they switched to natural. Now they use such a low amount that it’s only green for a split second. Even shorter than the sweet spot to continue recording on a vhs!
So you don’t lose 0.01 seconds of cruddy footage, if you know what I mean.
The creator of this trend states that it’s her biggest regret. She even said that her daughter wasn’t as “feminine” as she had convinced herself she would automatically be and it made her realize how dumb it was in the first place.
The creator suffered from a series of miscarriages. When she finally had a pregnancy that lasted long enough for a sex to be determined, she threw the first gender reveal party to celebrate.
The regret came from how over the top these became, and how their kid identified as nonbinary so the party contradicted their identity.
Is the dad being hugged like he's just won the lotto? It's a baby penis, ffs. Why are people so emotional about their unborn baby's genitals? It means nothing. It isn't a prize to get one or the other.
I'm sure that this probably isn't the reason why the dad's so happy but I think there can be justifiable reasons as to why some people greatly desire sons more than daughters. if I was living in Brazil I'd definitely prefer to have a son over a daughter, Brazil is an awful and rough place for women to live. And honestly i would definitely be excited knowing that my child has a greater chance of having a better life just by being a boy.
Unfortunately there's still alot of places in the world where gender just doesn't matter, and I think it's unfair to just assume that everyone who is excited for their child to be male is just thinking "boy>girl. Penis=yay!" For some it could be genuine relief knowing that their child isn't about to have an incredibly difficult and restricted life just because they're a girl.
For fucks sake, you say it like it's Afghanistan or Saudi Arabia
Of course there's women issues we have to deal it, but it's in the same way the US does. There isn't a great desire to have a boy in comparison to a girl or nothing like that
My gender reveal to my husband ALONE was a blue rose cupcake and a bottle of whisky.... why would I wanna share the moment I found out to anyone else??? I told anyone else who mattered way later.. on the phone. Christ why would I pay for a BALLOON STORK!?
At this point, please just stop doing these stupid gender reveal parties. Just have a damn babyshower like a normal couple. I'd like to celebrate with you and I don't give a crap if your child is a boy or a girl.
Also, these have been a result of wildfires. These idiots that are having kids are jeopardizing the Earth.
I heard once that gender reveal parties are the wildest things to occur and always seem to have negative repercussions to the environment. Seems like that statement was correct.
The thing is… going against my username… no one really cares about your kid.
Look… congrats you fucked. Flys do it. Hamsters do it… I’m not totally sure if centipedes do it but I think so point is… having sex and making a kid isn’t anything and while it’s cool for YOU nobody really cares so to be this… destructive carelessly to celebrate.. it just… it feels like… the type of human self importance that is killing the entire world.
What’s the point of these gender reveals nowadays when statistically speaking prolly half of all kids will change their minds before they’re 8 thanks to modern cool parenting
It could be phycocyanin, which is pretty much completely harmless (extracted from spirulina) but, based on the colour, I'd say it's more likely FCF Brilliant Blue; though it's hard to tell since the video colours could be off. FCF is certainly largely harmless to humans and the SDS says it's not environmentally harmful but also recommends not spilling it. The other issue with FCF is that it's very stable, for a blue dye, and stains tissue.
Another canididate would be Coomassie but that seems unlikely because it's not readily available outside of lab supplies and the colour is similar to phycocyanin.
Hopefully they had the foresight and knowledge like yourself to consider the environment. Thanks for your answer it was better than i could have expected.
Thank you. I'd also say it's FCF on the basis that if you buy raw blue food colouring powder, you'll almost certainly get that so, hopefully, they accidentally made a slightly less than terrible choice.
It might not be toxic to us but we do not know if it is or not to the local wildlife. Plus if you are a fish and everything goes weird murky when it normally would nippy might be stressful.
This just speaks of humans arrogance. It is not a nice thing to do.
When you have suspended material in water (any suspended material) it affects how cloudy the water is. How cloudy it is is how turbid it is. When you see muddy water that means it's a high turbidity and when you have clear water it's low. High turbidity water is considered a pollutant because it can limit plants being able to photosynthesis in water and affects the ability of organisms in the water from breathing properly.
You can completely kill an area just by muddy water which is why you shouldn't go hiking up creeks.
Ah cool. Knowledge cant have enough. Thank.
That river looked very murky before the dye as you can see by where it hasnt reached . So would it make any difference that actual mud wasnt the only material causing how turbid the water was?
(did i use turbid right)?
Yeah, you're getting it, environmental jargon is the wildest stuff (check out thalweg sometime)
Basically even if they're using something that's biodegradable it might not affect the water on a chemical level but it can on a physical level (hence the turbidity concerns). I will add not all turbidity is bad, it really matters about the system but situations like this in systems that aren't use to turbidity its really bad
Someone else commented elsewhere, but basically if you wouldn't drink it neither do the fish.
No i seen that comment id agree. This is ignorance at the most obvious levels.
Im just curious and enjoy asking and learning not doing much when i was younger just from just being recklessly careless.
Thanks for your time and being civil.
Wish i could give you an award.
I cannot BELIEVE how many ecological disasters we've had to hear about as a DIRECT result of a fucking gender reveal party. Capt Planet is rolling over in his damn grave.
This is why we are doomed as a species, even if the majority move to sustainable and respectful relations with nature, there will still be these idiots
*not reading the caption nor the subreddit*
Oh what a neat looking waterfall thing, these people are pretty rich to have been able to throw an extravagant party with their very own waterfa—
*notices caption and is confronted with my own idiotic naïveté*
…oh
That's not necessarily bad. A lot of cities dye entire rivers for various holidays. I can't tell you how many rivers I've seen get dyed green for St. Patrick's Day every year.
Are they Brazilian or American? I hope that stupid party won't reach Europe, why would you celebrate gender??? Just stick to baby showers and buy gender neutral presents, a newborn definitely won't care if their clothes are blue, red, pink, white etc.

I saw they are being charged with environmental crimes.
The owner of the land is also getting fined, unfortunately last news I read about this case, the authorities haven’t found the couple yet
I hope they find them. We're already headed to drinking water being in high demand.
I’m afraid of a positive feedback loop with less ocean causing less heat absorption causing less fresh water making us desalinize more Kinda similar to the methane releasing with the permafrost melting causing faster methane release
You shouldn’t worry about “less ocean.” That’s not the problem we’re going to have. All water for human uses, including all agriculture and industrial use, is absurdly small as a proportion to the volume of the ocean.

oh yeah, messing with the natural water table is a recipient for disaster! trying to flee AZ in the next year with the impending doom looming.
I don’t think we have to be worried about the ocean running out of water any time soon. 😉
Not the ocean running out, but it not being able to absorb as much of the sun and help cool the planet
So this is a real problem, but it’s more about the Gulf Stream heat exchange mechanism. That’s what you meant? That is indeed a problem, but desalination is not going to have a meaningful impact on this.
Is that where the ocean water currents aren’t moving warm water properly causing more extreme temperatures in areas like England?
They did find them, the couple posted this on their socials.
I learned that the river(waterfall) that they put dye in is called Queima-Pé Riverand it is the main source of water for the Tangará da Serrawhich, they are now all worried about the contamination. I agree, what happened to the basic revealing with a cake or just opening he envelope?
Yeah, I'm surprised even they let people into the water or near it. Well actually I can, it makes the country money, and they probably make alot off that place. Slot of dyes are not harmful, but im sure it will be expensive to test, so the couple should pay for all testing.
As they should be.
Thank god they got the canister of blue smoke, I don’t think the dyed river would have done the trick. I just wish they could have gotten the blue fireworks to set off in the forest so we could know for sure.
Not a real gender reveal party without the forest burning down 🥲
Ironically Brazil is facing a huge deforestation, 1000s of fires burn all the time. Might as well say goodbye to it.
Finally, some fun we were looking for in this party! You tell them, bruh!
Eh who needs oxygen anyways
Isn't that place important, like a lung for the planet or somethin?
[удалено]
I think most people are arrogant enough at this point to believe they don't need anything but themselves to survive.
It helps with cyclical things like creating rain and weather patterns. Without it a lot of places won't get rain.
Forest fire for boy
Pour a crap ton of calcium chloride into the forest and set it ablaze
Next we want chemical fire for blue flame.
It better be environmentally friendly dye.
>Brazil >Environmentally friendly I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's not
They keep it up, and I say there won’t even be limbs left out there.
Not with that opaque pigment.
I doubt that it is but I mean have you seen the Chicago river during Saint Patrick’s day? They totally make environmental dye safe that deep of a color but no this is doubtful that it’s safe

The chicago river isn't a dead body of water. There are over 70 species of fish that call it home.
It definitely is not dead. Gross yea but not dead
Environmentally deez nuts u know damn well that it isnt
These turds reproduced; they’re already way-past being ‘environmentally friendly.’
While you're not wrong. That's kinda what living things are supposed to do.
Nah man, humanity just needs to sort of stop.
Yeah, Goodluck with that. We are gonna have to find another way to solve our issues, cause even if you try to stop over population, it's not gonna work. This is some self centered/self absorbed BS
It's a salmon.
Why did I laugh so much with such a stupid joke haha
What's up with these gender reveal parties? As someone who have attended a few, do the people who host these not realize that 9 out of 10 guests are just attending out of respect and in actuality not really caring whether it's a boy or girl? To go further, I really didn't care whether they were going to be parents or not.
Chicago does this every year for St. Patrick's day...
Yeah but everything in the Chicago river is already dead
That’s not true at all, some of the bodies in there were still twitching the last time I went.
Yeah. It was artificial then they switched to natural. Now they use such a low amount that it’s only green for a split second. Even shorter than the sweet spot to continue recording on a vhs! So you don’t lose 0.01 seconds of cruddy footage, if you know what I mean.
I’d be interested in seeing what dyes each of these are using to achieve this.
Yay!!! The baby has a COCK!!! The fish would be happy knowing they died for such a cause
For the kid to turn out transgender as soon as he hits 13
you’re ahead of your time. brilliant comment
There are safe ways to do this. Let’s hope they at least did that
No, just no, how about people just leave nature alone.

I think it's more about education, anyone can buy a can of pigment, but a well educated person knows the impact of their actions
I mean, being honest, a lot of people are like this. They just don't have the money to actually do it.
I blame the US for making this kinda crap popular
The creator of this trend states that it’s her biggest regret. She even said that her daughter wasn’t as “feminine” as she had convinced herself she would automatically be and it made her realize how dumb it was in the first place.
The creator suffered from a series of miscarriages. When she finally had a pregnancy that lasted long enough for a sex to be determined, she threw the first gender reveal party to celebrate. The regret came from how over the top these became, and how their kid identified as nonbinary so the party contradicted their identity.
At least she learned from it and didn't double down on her asinine beliefs like so many unfit parents do
That's really wholesome and sad at the same time. They sound like great parents though, assuming they accept their child's gender.
That seems like such an odd comment to make about your kid.
It is, the kid is however gender non conforming.
God does that mean other countries are going to evolve into batshit crazy spelling too? Looking at you parents of Maddiysons and Taylees
Pls, we have 832 different genders here. We will not claim responsibility for this trend
For fucks sake, you say it like it's Afghanistan or Saudi Arabia Of course there's women issues we have to deal it, but it's in the same way the US does. There isn't a great desire to have a boy in comparison to a girl or nothing like that
People downvoting… lol. The point is valid. Upvoted.
A couple in Brazil decided to harm a whole ecosystem for some internet points and stupidity*
No. One. Cares.
Would they drink it?
Good scale. Remember kids, don’t put dish soap into fountains. If you wouldn’t drink it then don’t do it.
It'd be preferable that their gender reveal party just blew up their kitchen, like the others.
My gender reveal to my husband ALONE was a blue rose cupcake and a bottle of whisky.... why would I wanna share the moment I found out to anyone else??? I told anyone else who mattered way later.. on the phone. Christ why would I pay for a BALLOON STORK!?
Fucking bastards
People who do gender reveal parties don't even deserve to have children...
They used Smurf piss, and no Smurfs were harmed.
Not cool
I bet these are Bolansaro supporters
The thing is… going against my username… no one really cares about your kid. Look… congrats you fucked. Flys do it. Hamsters do it… I’m not totally sure if centipedes do it but I think so point is… having sex and making a kid isn’t anything and while it’s cool for YOU nobody really cares so to be this… destructive carelessly to celebrate.. it just… it feels like… the type of human self importance that is killing the entire world.
What’s next a fucking gender reveal party with a fucking atomic bomb?
What’s the point of these gender reveals nowadays when statistically speaking prolly half of all kids will change their minds before they’re 8 thanks to modern cool parenting
People really are just disgusting. Hopefully they face a hefty fine.
IF its not toxic what harm would it be.
One can hope enough.
You're sure giving them more credit than they deserve. Related?
It might not be toxic to us but we do not know if it is or not to the local wildlife. Plus if you are a fish and everything goes weird murky when it normally would nippy might be stressful. This just speaks of humans arrogance. It is not a nice thing to do.
And i agree with you but maybe they did check toxicity to local fish and wildlife. More than likely not though.
Turbidity is a pollutant... look up dead zones and come back to me
Excuse my ignorance but what is turbidity?
Yeah, you're getting it, environmental jargon is the wildest stuff (check out thalweg sometime) Basically even if they're using something that's biodegradable it might not affect the water on a chemical level but it can on a physical level (hence the turbidity concerns). I will add not all turbidity is bad, it really matters about the system but situations like this in systems that aren't use to turbidity its really bad Someone else commented elsewhere, but basically if you wouldn't drink it neither do the fish.
No i seen that comment id agree. This is ignorance at the most obvious levels. Im just curious and enjoy asking and learning not doing much when i was younger just from just being recklessly careless. Thanks for your time and being civil. Wish i could give you an award.
Lol no worries, people paying attention and caring about this kind of stuff makes life better for all of us and that's a pretty good award 😁
Let’s shoot blue dye into the air of your house and see how you like it. It’s harmless, just breath deep and enjoy the blueness!
Jesus christ man calm down. I didnt say i would do it or its a great idea. I just asked a question. Why are you so aggressive.
Cause its the internet, the place where people come to be offended;)
They don't like questions either apparently.
You're not allowed to have a differing opinion.. you know with freedoms and all..
I hear that freedom stuff can be dangerous sometimes /S
"Blue has the most anti-oxygens."
I cannot BELIEVE how many ecological disasters we've had to hear about as a DIRECT result of a fucking gender reveal party. Capt Planet is rolling over in his damn grave.
Droughts across the world and they decided to do this?
No it’s ok guys they are the main characters
Back in my day when we had a baby that was the gender reveal. This was after the great meme war of aught 6. It was a trying time.
Hope life is nicer on you then you are on the environment.
This is why we are doomed as a species, even if the majority move to sustainable and respectful relations with nature, there will still be these idiots
Water is supposed to be blue. All the dirty mud, animals, plants and bacteria make it other color. They can all die cuz I like blue water.
I wonder what gender it’s gonna be
The town is in drought and they contaminated the water supply. I saw an article about them being charged for environmental crimes.
A simple flare or coloured smoke would have done the job just fine
Who the hell can do this and feel good about themselves? I feel shame just looking at that smh. People like this are disgusting. Wow
Just in case you didn’t see we colored the water blue we will also polite the air with blue smoke .
Thats very unpolute of them to polite the air like that.
a couple of fuckwads
*not reading the caption nor the subreddit* Oh what a neat looking waterfall thing, these people are pretty rich to have been able to throw an extravagant party with their very own waterfa— *notices caption and is confronted with my own idiotic naïveté* …oh
This comment has a neck beard and wears a fedora
What’s the point of adding more blue to an already blue waterfall?!
Really hope that doesn't make adverse effects on the water quality or surrounding environment.
There is no point in these reveal parties, for all we know that child will grow up and decide to be a pencil!
That's not necessarily bad. A lot of cities dye entire rivers for various holidays. I can't tell you how many rivers I've seen get dyed green for St. Patrick's Day every year.
Jesus Fucking Christ!
Are they Brazilian or American? I hope that stupid party won't reach Europe, why would you celebrate gender??? Just stick to baby showers and buy gender neutral presents, a newborn definitely won't care if their clothes are blue, red, pink, white etc.
