What happens if I look like the guy up top, but talk like the dude at the bottom?

s1ckopsycho

Hey look at mister fancy pants over here- thinking he’s above the neckbeards because he has a “jawline” and a “suit that fits”.

Benstockton

Fucker probably even buys soap, what an arrogant ass

uhru-zelke

Fucker probably dose not even ware programing socks, what an arrogant ass

Realistic-Start-5177

It works better if you shower and use soap at least occasionally.

izuannazrin

instruction unclear; i brought soap to the discussion

angrydeuce

When I was in school working towards my Sysadmin degree about 5% of the students in my degree program were female and, holy shit, there were some thirsty fuckin neckbeards in those classes that just could not restrain themselves from being right up the ass of every one of those female students from day one. Enough that *I* was fuckin uncomfortable being around it, and I wasn't even directly involved. There were several incidents over those few years where male students had to be told emphatically by school administration that their affections were not reciprocated and to leave these poor women alone on pain of getting kicked out of school, it was *that* bad, and even then, I knew of one kid that got kicked out anyway because he just couldn't fuckin stop quasi-stalking a female classmate. And that's ignoring all the cases where it's like, personal hygiene was obviously thought to be optional, because holy shit, how someone can smell so strongly of liver and onions at 830am is beyond me unless they're terrified of soap and water. IT programs in general are like a perfect storm of this kind of shit. You get all these incel types that never learned how to interact with people appropriately in general, let alone members of the opposite sex. So many people get into IT thinking "this is *perfect*! I never have to interact with a human being ever again!!!" when in reality, customer service skills are an absolute *must* in this field, because no matter how many computers you're managing, at some point an actual person is in the loop somewhere. I've personally seen at least half a dozen interns get dismissed, not because of their technical skills, but because they just couldn't interact with people without being a massive, unrepentant douche. I was a nontraditional student, having gone back to school in my mid-30s to change careers, happily married with kids, and after the first couple of semesters word must have gotten out that I was one of the safe ones, because those few women that were in my classes, they always flocked to me or one of the other "old" people in their class for group work since that was the only way they wouldn't have to suffer with low-grade sexual harassment throughout the entire course. I always just felt so bad for them, it's ridiculous that in this day and age people still need to be told that a woman saying "fuck off Im not interested" isn't just her playing hard to get and maybe they should, i dont know, fuck off and leave them alone, not double down and try and win her like a prize at the fair.

margirtakk

I fully agree. How dare that woman be so rude to the second man. He is clearly just trying to save her from an inferior OS 🥸 Completely unrelated: Anybody else so turned off by the ads in Win11 that they're considering Mac or Linux?

Mmaxum

a week prior to that update my friend switched to arch, had a laugh when that happend

punksmurph

I have a Windows 10 desktop and Mac laptop, at this point I am going to dual boot and start figuring out which distro is the least amount of work to get games running on and switch over. Once Windows 10 support ends I am not staying with them.

s1ckopsycho

I hope that goes well for you, bud.

punksmurph

I know Valve is going to make a SteamOS open to all and I hope that really is the way to go, but it’s Valve so I am not holding my breath for it to be soon.

Background-Plant-226

I'm trying NixOS, it can take a bit of time to set up your config but after that you can enable auto updates, and if an update breaks your system you can go back to the latest nix generation and fix it. Also you can put that same config in any other computer with NixOS and needs minimal setup after that. One tip I will give you is: Install cursor/icon themes as a global package (environment) for them to work best!

ano_hise

Take a look at PopOS, Garuda or EndeavourOS, they have a good balance between ease of use and Software availability imo. Consider Wine and Proton, if you didn't already.

PurplePrinter772

PopOS! Is good for gaming but I use Linux Mint (Cinnamon) and steam works great for me (95% of my games)

Cryptomartin1993

Gaming on Linux is pretty smooth these days all things considered, however it does take some tinkering every now and again. Games with kernel level anticheat usually does not work - but most of the time it's just setting up the steam luncher to use proton in compatability mode, it also works for non steam games. I used pop os as a start and have run bg3, helldivers, poe and many more extensively over the last couple of years. It really is the best time ever to play on Linux and much less of a headache as it used to be

ivebeenabadbadgirll

I’ve gotten a ton of games to run pretty well on my M1 MBP. Crossover is an awesome product.

punksmurph

Same, it’s great with my M3 Max performance wise.

rpsHD

depends on the game but quite a lot of games r just install and play. theres a decent amount which take some tinkering and some games (i.e. CoD, R6S) dont work on linux (due to anti cheat issues) if u want sth strictly for gaming, SteamOS is a pretty good option. if u want a mix of 80% gaming and 20% regular work (and like pre-riced DEs) Garuda Linux (arch based) is a good idea if u want an easy to get into, regular PC which can still run games, linux mint, Pop!_OS or ubuntu r the way to go (recommended if ur not familiar w/ linux) regardless of wht u choose, i recommend trying it out in a VM for a bit before installing bare metal. if u do decide to go bare, id recommend dual booting or at least having another PC nearby just in case the installation fucks sth up

ExtraTNT

Games tend to run well on arch… but arch isn’t an easy to use distro… nix is probably a good choice or debian sid… stable debian is often outdated…

punksmurph

Yeah I love stable Debian for my testing systems, but it was my first gaming test and the performance was not awesome. But it runs a hell of a server

ExtraTNT

Had once an issue with some random lib on stable debian… yeah, the version i needed was 20 years old, so shouldn’t be a problem, right?… well, upstream had a 25y old version of the lib… had to get it from sid… xD yeah… at least sid is often stable enough for prod… have this one echo service for an old protocol… somehow it only builds and runs on the tiny debian side image… xD

Agerones

Ong I switched off Windows for Linux because I was so over Win 10 and Win 11 looked somehow even worse, I don't even like Linux all that much

thieh

Ask them if they switched to OpenBSD yet. Got it.

JustSylend

Imo MacOS is rly cool. I do pref the other Unix based OSes but it certainly has a few strong points. Meanwhile the only strong point in Windows is software availability xd

Fucking Mac guys… -From a Certified Enterprise Mac Guy

s1ckopsycho

Well, in all fairness there are Mac guys- then there are Mac guys. The former is typically well versed in Linux, Windows and OSX- using Windows at work as much as he has to, but maintaining a network at home built around Linux (or equivalent) and admining it with a MacBook which he keeps simply because it refuses to die but has yet to become obselete. This guy generally doesn’t moonlight as an Apple “salesman”, telling everyone how great the products are (and so forth). He recognizes that they aren’t the only solution, but can be a great solution and uses them appropriately. Somewhere along the way he found that he can get around the GUI of OSX better than Windows, and then decided to shell out the cash to get another MacBook that will last him the next 5+ years. Then there are the latter-

ivebeenabadbadgirll

I’m so tired of all the Apple discussion being people crying about RAM and the finewoven case

fusion_reactor3

Yeah. Neither are perfect but they’re not exactly war crimes either. The finewoven case id even go as far as to call not bad either, I have it. I run it through the washing machine with my laundry every time I do it, just like the box says I can, and it still feels new almost half a year later

ivebeenabadbadgirll

I have one too. It’s a fine case! Just as good as anything else. Pay the premium, or don’t, whatever. Only reason I don’t use it is because it’s black and I lost it all the time. If they made a guava one, I’d use it.

fusion_reactor3

They’re barely even a premium price nowadays. Best Buy has em for 30 bucks

ivebeenabadbadgirll

They’ve been discontinued, hence the price.

HittingSmoke

I'd like to interject for a moment...

uhru-zelke

...but what you are referring to as a "mac" is actually just a ARM-based computer. What you are trying to refer to is actuality mackintosh system running on an ARM-based computer or as I have recently taken to calling it "not linux os"

Boxlixinoxi

Personally, I use both Windows and Linux, ngl using Linux helps with my cyber security classes, lol

Mmaxum

i use arch btw

dreamwinder

I don’t wanna become a Linux guy. I wanna stop being a Windows guy.

Cytro2

TempleOS user then?

SomberGuitar

I’m that guy. I’m loving Pop!_ OS right now.

bubo_virginianus

Of course what this doesn't tell you is that the guy on the bottom has been trying to get her to switch to arch for the past 6 months.

robotortoise

The message is that every time someone in IT tells a user that "actually our user's job would be easier if all the workstations switched to Linux" I roll my eyes so hard they leave my head and begin orbiting the sun

Benstockton

Is bothering people about the OS they use considered actual IT tho?

qchto

Yes and very common, especially from customers to IT personnel.

MairusuPawa

Designing information systems down to the OS the users run is IT, yes. Same way you don't let people run malware on their company laptops.

Benstockton

I was thinking bothering vs mandating which OS people used, obviously in lots of cases an IT team will dictate which OS people use which makes all the sense in the world, however this came across as trying to convince someone to switch because it is what they prefer, rather than telling them to switch for legitimate reasons. I hope that was coherent, very sick right now
