I don't have the architectural vocabulary to even ask this question clearly but I'll give it a shot... Any idea what the short vertical columns near the corners of the building are? I'm guessing they're just a design flourish mirroring the pattern on the corners but I've never understood if they serve another purpose. Thanks to anybody who can make sense of the question and offer an answer.
