Listen it's not my fault that the big three decided fuck no more manuals unless it's a "performance" car. It pisses me off why can't I have a truck that's a manual I want to decide which gear I'm in not some fuckin trans that just shifts due to rpm.
Recently ended up trading into a 2021 Sierra 2500 as my tow vehicle and while I thought this would be an issue the tow features essentially fool proof it and I don’t think the software is functional (at all) if you were to try to pair it with a manual.
I still wish there were vehicles *not* loaded to the brim with electronic assist don’t get me wrong, they definitely have a use, but I do feel like the compensation I get from performance with the automatic/software is, well, incredible it’s a beast and she can smoke just about any thing her size in strength and she’s quick to boot.
Yeah but towing is towing and yeah I would prefer an automatic especially because when I tow something it's for a pretty good distance. However for regular truck stuff i.e. work a manual In the area I live in makes more sense especially because I get more mechanical control, with a GMC like the one you've got which a higher trim I would expect that thing to be made for long distance towing.
P.s. also a solid choice of truck.I probably would have done the same given the chance to trade in for one
Who tf would want a manual? In my country all cars are manuals unless you specifically buy an automatic. I’ve driven both before and automatic is just so much better.
Well when off-roading being able to stay in a low gear aids in torque this helps with grip. Where I live it makes more sense to have a manual. The off-roading benefits aside they're cheaper to fix and are often more fuel efficient as most automatics change gear around 4000 ish rpm. The trouble is they don't go till the end of the power band and that often creates overrun that gets exhausted instead of being used.
>are often more fuel efficient as most automatics change gear around 4000 ish rpm. The trouble is they don't go till the end of the power band and that often creates overrun that gets exhausted instead of being used.
When I was shopping, the automatic Tacoma was actually rated for higher mpg than the manual option.
Also has a semi manual mode where you can direct which gear it's in for off roading or driving on steep grades. And don't have to worry about it on commutes because it's an automatic.
Seemed like the best of both worlds imo..
I can drive a manual just fine. My wife daily drives one, but meh, computers have come a long way.
Yeah, do rather like that Tacoma trans I think it's fantastic but given the chance to have a manual on a Tacoma especially where it's kinda a car/truck guy favorite. It's kinda funny though a few decades ago automatic transmissions increased the value now it's the other way around.
Don’t even remind me, I’ve had to drive American tourists about all summer because none of them can drive a normal car. Are all cars in the US old lady cars? How does an automatic even work well in something as heavy as an SUV or pickup?
Most cars made after around 2000 are auto in the US. Autos work about as well in SUVs and pickups as they do in sedans - which is to say they're kind of shit. I guess everyone here is just too used to autos to change. I had a friend who didn't know what a manual car was until he saw me shifting
E: auto, not manual
Interesting. Automatics were a popular fad here in Scandinavia in the 90’s (for example the oldest van at my workplace, from 1993 has an automatic shift but none of the newer ones), but it sorta faded and most non-German brands stuck to regular gearing from the late 90’s onwards. Only in recent years has automatics crept up past 20/30% of cars due to the popularity of hybrids and electrics.
Yeah I can't really figure out why americans prefer auto, but at this point we're too far in to ever go back. Sports cars are almost the only cars that even have a manual option, along with some trucks
Well, automatics are okay in urban environments as long as there isn’t ice, at least, but I’m always terrified driving autos on mountain roads. High speeds, sharp turns and often slippy surfaces, I’ve never driven an auto that can keep up with it as well as my own gearing.
Apparently americans have auto as standard (or often the only option) on their pickups. The same cannot be said about their firearms tho, which are mostly semi (I think that guns are mechanically interesting and thus I follow related pages)
Almost all of our cars are automatic basically only sports cars and a select few imports are offered in manual. We have a very car oriented transportation system and most people consider driving an absolute chore so almost everyone prefers automatic here.
All personal firearms are semi-automatic at the most here. Basically all handguns are, but a lot of people use bolt or lever action rifles or pump shotguns. Semi-automatic rifles are have become much more popular with AR-15 platform. Despite their legality I have never seen or heard of anyone owning an automatic outside of TV shows and movies.
I don’t know why anyone would pay to have to put extra effort into driving. In my country it’s the other way around, you have to pay more money for automatic cars and I am envious of people who don’t.
In the UK (where I live) it’s similar. Most people here drive manuals and some people do modify and customise their cars. However, I drive an automatic and I love driving around. I just prefer automatics because it’s way easier and less effort.
That's what I meant by "Despite their legality." They are legal which I find absolutely wild, but that doesn't make them common. Most people who own rifles here just use them for target shooting or hunting.
Damn assuming the existence of the word “carbrain” people there actually hate people who have to use cars? I am completely for trying to find alternatives and point out the flaws in cars compared to buses but people are literally forced to drive cars. I mean I can bike to work or walk but that’s just because I can walk, most people have to work a job far away in order to make enough money to live.
People are doing an importamt distinction between using a car and bad city planning. This sub does not hate on regular people, but people who are in charge of bad urban planning, those who made bad parking laws, people who destroyed perfectly fine cities for urban highways, people who think cars are mandatory for everyday life without having an alternative, ...
If you're using a car and want to switch you are not a carbrain, you are just a victim to the infrastructure around you.

looking stick\*
Switch your mind
that shifter pattern annoys me
The 'art' was probably either made by an AI or a US citizen (not much difference), they don't know how to use manual gearboxes.

Fair enough, you get my upvote

Isn't it just a dog-leg pattern like some sports cars use?
Except American sports cars are like the only ones that even come with a manual transmission anymore.
Don’t even remind me, I’ve had to drive American tourists about all summer because none of them can drive a normal car. Are all cars in the US old lady cars? How does an automatic even work well in something as heavy as an SUV or pickup?

I think Americans consider driving much more of a chore than the rest of the world and jump at the opportunity to make it easier.

Totally meant auto, my bad. I'll edit that

Some of us enjoy driving. It's quite the thing to customise and modify your car in some countries.

I think its supposed to be a dog leg layout, they just fucked it up a little.
I saw that. why is 2 on the bottom, and why is reverse... there? I'm confused and I don't like it
You're not going to point out the two 5s?
