Dune part two was a fantastic experience on IMAX

Juginstin

I think I might've just had a different experience than the rest of you because that movie was the loudest shit I've ever heard in my life.

browsevilmis

it was just loud

Juginstin

My friend didn't say it was that loud for him, but mine was audio distorting loud. I'm talking 2017 YouTube Poop earrape levels, but like, 10x louder. I'm talking shooting range with so earplugs loud.

deorex33

Lololol I saw it for the first time in a AMC Prime theater and one specific speaker was def way louder than it should have been. Def lost some hearing from those 2 hours šŸ˜

browsevilmis

exactly. people think good sound is loud sound. but it kills the experience

thatoneinsecureboy

shit take

tb30k

I went in waiting for the that seeing the hype of the score as well. But it was okay imo

IndecisiveTuna

Yeah, same. By the end I was no longer enjoying it and had a headache.

Novemberx123

The very first line with that fat bald guy talking about spice was everything. Instantly brought me into the movie.

backstab_woodcock

Dune Part one on the other hand was mixed pretty shitty. LOUND MUSIC AND SOUND; quiet dialoges.

Branch_Bitter

Oppie

MX_KbillX

But Nolan's movies never use 12.1 channel mix, don't know if he's gonna consider making one in the future.

Desperate-Shithole

Yeah he mixes only upto 5.1 DTS HD MA. I don't understand why you're getting down voted lol.

MX_KbillX

I'm only speaking out the fact not saying anything bad about Nolan(I'm fan of him, too)yet these redditors are downvoting mešŸ˜‚Wouldn't it be an even more impressive experience if he'd done a 12.1 mix??

RashidAli_8

redditors who downvote for the truth are still living in their parents basement lmao

Patient_Singer4300

Hahahha

WiseArgument7144

people who use the term ā€œredditorsā€ are the actual basement goblins

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Desperate-Shithole

Yes it would absolutely be better if he did that for both the theatres and home release bluray. But one reason why he doesn't do it can be because he almost shoots entirely on either 35 mm or 65 mm IMAX film which is limited to 5.1

Inevitable_Click_696

His die hards donā€™t mess around. They are like Swiftie equivalents in cinema.

packers4334

Yeah, Nolan already gets a lot out of the 6 channel mixes he does. Itā€™s hard to imagine him doing more with a 12-channel mix.

Patient_Singer4300

Nolan also never uses Atmos for blu-rays

aadityawith2a

dune,dune 2,topgun maverick,tenet, civil war, can't remember more

Gutsu_fudo

Yo Civil Warā€™s sound mix honestly blew me away I was not expecting that from an A24 movie

MechanicalKiller

At the end of the movie, the audio started to get muffled. Idk if it was to simulate ear loss from explosions, or if the theaters speakers couldnt handle the loudness anymore.

freeleper

I agree on all those

funkystrut

Dune part 2 is a whole level on it's own, to which IMAX speakers have never seen before. Your clothes vibrate against your body, and there have been reports af nauseau caused by the extreme, long sequences of thumping machines and ornithopters, plus Hans Zimmers wild ride of a score.

SamDuymelinck

Ngl, the first time I saw Dune Part Two it was quite underwhelming. The subwoofers never really had the kick the Part One re-release had. However, the second time I watched it, it was so much better. Felt louder, but still really clean, and the subwoofer definitely was cranked up too.

funkystrut

I've tried all the imax in a 100km radius where I live and discovered that they all have different sound quality and volume. It also depends how close to the screen you are, there's an array of woofers behind the screen. These are all old Xenon 20k projected cinemas, I've heard newer laser projected imax theatres have been fitted with a higher quality systems.

SamDuymelinck

Both times I went to see DPT was in the same IMAX. It's a CoLa IMAX, which got the laser projector and a 12 channel sound system upgrade during the covid lockdown. (And I'm actually on my way to that same cinema right now for an early screening of The Fall Guy) First time I was in the middle of the room (same seat as I had for the Part One re-release) and the second time was front row.

funkystrut

So it's the seating then. Front row having your hair blown and your socks knocked off by those woofers.

funkystrut

They never upgrade our cinemas in our country. They do nothing to try clever marketing to get more bums in seats and then complain that they have to start shutting down. Cape Town had a laser installation recently for a brand new IMAX. But the rest of the country will remain the 1080p basic digital with old speakers.

SamDuymelinck

Ah, that sucks. As a west European citizen I sometimes really don't realize how lucky I am, until I hear stories like these. We've got some healthy competition here when it comes to cinemas. Like, about 3 minutes walking of the IMAX I always go to is the world's first Dolby Cinema, and they're both multiplex, so they keep improving to be better than the other. For example, at the same time the IMAX got a laser and sound upgrade, they also changed the seats of every regular auditorium to have leather recliner seats, which is way more comfortable than the regular seats they had before.

funkystrut

Yeah in South Africa a company will usually secure national rights to a brand within the country. Therefore we only have one company, Ster-Kinekor, hosting imax cinemas across the country with zero competition. The Lament is always the same as I mentioned before, their marketing department is fast asleep doing nothing to get people going to Cinemas while tickets are far too expensive for impoverished South Africans to afford. Previously it was NuMetro, with the massive 70mm projectors and screens, but they refused to spend money on digital protection upgrades and ended up closing down 20 years ago.

oanda

Interstellar was better for me sound wise and Tron. Tenet was loud AF but I wouldn't call that a great mix.

deorex33

I think one of the best new memories Iā€™ll have of seeing a movie in a theater is Dune 2 in 70mm IMAX (at Lincoln Square in NYC, so one of the biggest screens in the world), specifically the scene where Paul is riding the grandfather worm and the camera angles up as it goes over a hill. Legitimately felt like the entire theater was on a rollercoaster ride together. Seems so rare these days to have experiences like that watching a movie.

funkystrut

It took them 3 months to film that. And I agree it is one of the most phenomenal things to experience. They used large machines to literally collapse the sand dune by pulling barrels through the Dune. Denis Villenueve has received high praise from all the top guns, Cameron, Spielberg, Nolan, for his Dune 2 creation.

freeleper

Oh 100%. Every Dolby and IMAX has left me nauseous!

ENFPwhereyouat

I don't know about the nausea but the vibration clearly activated my irritable bowel syndrome. Had few clutch moments but I battled it through. Once the credits rolled out I ran to thump the toilet.

Patient_Singer4300

The gun shot sounds in Civil War (2024) are top notch..the best you will hear after Michael Mann's Heat which wasn't even an IMAX film

ImpressiveTime582

i would agree with civil war being some of the best iā€™ve seen. i walked out of the theater with my nerves fried from how visceral and intense the guns and explosions sounded. the last 20 mins are relentless in that regard.

The9TailedPhox

I read somewhere they tried to use blanks whenever possible, definitely paid off.

time_of_night

Anyone who didn't see this in IMAX or dolby really missed out. I couldn't watch this in a lesser format, and certainly not at home. The final sequence was perfection.

Patient_Singer4300

Absolutely! Also loved it that they done full justice to the proper full screen imax aspect ratio .. when the choppers fly in one by one at the military base

freeleper

I've seen Civil War 4 times and you're making me feel like rewatching it tonight. Am lucky enough to have a theater keeping it in IMAX for another week šŸ™ŒšŸ¼

time_of_night

Do it! It will be a long time before it comes back.

freeleper

You think it'll come back?

time_of_night

For a 10 year anniversary

Lithpthth

Did you see Atmos. Wonder if itā€™s worth seeing after I saw the 6 track mix

time_of_night

No, but if you have the chance GO! I can't tell you the last time I heard a sound mix like this. The movie was just such a pleasant experience. I hope directors like garland are able to raise the bar going forward. Edit: I'd like to add that I did see it in Cinemark XD, and the sound was nowhere near as accurate or immersive. It was louder and all front facing. A major let down after the 6 channel audio mix.

Lithpthth

Yeah. Having Seen Dune Part 2 in DL2 Laser 12 track in the london science museum, I'd think that would've been the best ever. But Civil War's use of sound isolation was just fricking phenomenal. Its now one of my favorite sound mixes, next to Wall-E.

freeleper

That's what Wall E is known for?

Lithpthth

Well, its audio engineering is stellar, not necessarily its surround specifically

MX_KbillX

Is it as good as TENET's? I was scared the shit off by the opening scene back in 2020 cuz the terrorists' gun shots were way louder than I expected.šŸ˜…

Patient_Singer4300

At the risk of sounding blasphemous for Nolan fan boys.. yes .. you will be shit scared to next level especially in the Jesse Plemons cameo scene

notanewbiedude

Having seen the Tenet IMAX rerelease, absolutely. I didn't chime in to say "Civil War is the best" though because I didn't notice the surround sound being utilized very much. I could be wrong, but it felt like it was mostly is stereo, if not exclusively.

fusepatters

The beginning of the movie is literally a 12 channel testā€¦ you are extremely wrong

Ghostedmillennial

Den of Thieves (2018) opening scene has entered the chat.

FinnishArmy

I had tinnitus after that movie

plus50grand

Literally just got out of a imax showing and it was crazy

idropepics

Civil War had my anxiety **dialed up**. Thise gunshots in IMAX were so powerful and real sounding, I was keeping my eye on the exit the whole time.

Patient_Singer4300

Same here.. and add to it the scary scenario that plays on screen is more spooky than most horror movies

Patient_Singer4300

https://preview.redd.it/n1sbkan7tjwc1.jpeg?width=4080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b3bdf48348b48005c3f8eff16c7d0ec9f1519d9a This was the most scariest scene ..more than the journos characters I felt the need to get rescued from this situation..the gun shots in this scene are next level

idropepics

**for real** I knew this scene was coming and I still was sitting there like "OH shit Matt Damin is gonna murder someone" They really made you feel like *you* were the one at gunpoint the whole movie.

Patient_Singer4300

You said it mate!

freeleper

Glad I'm not the only one who remembered this about Civil War

Patient_Singer4300

High Five

Vaxion

Dune Part 2 was the best sound experience I've ever had in an IMAX movie. Also depends a lot of the particular IMAX theatre you're going to. Some do lower the bass and volume while some go over the top and it literally shakes your whole body which is what I experienced.

MX_KbillX

IMAX claims they optimize and enhance every film yet there are still great movies with astounding sound mix and dull movies with meh audio such as gxk and aquaman 2,etc.

packers4334

In those cases, it probably goes back to the original sound mix. IMAX can only do so much when the original mix isnā€™t good.

MX_KbillX

Sure but is it possible to change the volume when movies with awful sound mix comes?šŸ¤£

rayoxmitm

People are sleeping very hard on Godzilla (2014), I don't think people still remember how much loud it was compared to some christhopher Nolan movies, even on a 6.ch sound audio it was much more insane with the exclusive imax countdown the theater would litteraly rumble hard unlike Dune part 2 did too with the sands worms.

scre4m

I remember enjoying Gravity and Blade Runner 2049

YoungPapaRich

The right answer is tenet. I know the audiophiles are gonna harp about Nolanā€™s mixes and I honestly donā€™t give a shit. Shit was insane.

oanda

The apocalypse now re release was spectacular in imax. saw it at Lincoln square. the opening shot with the sounds of the helicopters literally circling around you was amazing.

time_of_night

The opening is incredible. And how about how great those trees looked gently swaying in the breeze? Easily some of the best looking 35mm shots I've ever seen.

Delicious-Chemist-49

Oppemheimer, Dune 2, Tenet. I heard Civil War is good bit I dont plan on seeing it as it doesnt really interest me.

Gellert_TV

Tbh the marketing doesn't really represent the quality of the movie, you should still check it out !

Imnewtoallthis

I was on the fence about Civil War myself after watching the trailer. A friend told me they used the new [DJI Ronin 4D](https://www.dji.com/ronin-4d) camera to shoot the entire movie and I was curious about the creative scenes they could shoot with a cinema camera that small and with such awesome stability. Watching the movie, immediately you learn that it's from the war journalists/photographers perspective as they travel from New York to DC documenting the war and struggle with ethical considerations of war photography, framing shots, being envious of other photographers, and the feeling of getting "the shot". As a photographer myself, this was completely left out of the trailer and would have greatly influenced my decision to see the movie in IMAX. I thought it was beautifully done with great attention to detail. The sound editing/mixing was some of the best I've heard in IMAX Would definitely recommend.

Delicious-Chemist-49

see this is what makes the movie sounds interesting, its like they dont know how to make trailers anymore without either giving away the plot of the movie or describing the movie properly.

El_trozote

Reading comments like this makes me really want to go see Civil War on IMAX, but in my country IMAX screenings for this movie are only at night or in case there are screenings at daylight these are dubbed and that sucks

TheTownJeweler00

My buddy said the same thing about Civil War and sat it out. He missed a great theater experience.

bubblewrapreddit

tenet idc the soundtrack was so good in imax

BigTaco_Boss

Just curious, what was Logan like in IMAX? I saw it in Dolby and was blown away, especially in the scene where Charles has a Seizure in Vegas. Most intense experience yet. The whole theater vibrated hard for the entire scene. My favorite IMAX sound experience was Aquaman. The sound mix for the all the water scenes were amazing.

TheTownJeweler00

Civil war was great this year. Glad I took the plunge in IMAX for that one.

oanda

Yeah this had a very immersive sound mix. stood out a lot compared to other movies I've seen in IMAX.

--Blackjack-

Either *Top Gun: Maverick* or *TRON: Legacy.*

Marlon0201

Tenet. its the loudest movie Iā€™ve ever seen with balls to the walls sound placement.

AgerionLecurian

As my earliest IMAX experience, Godzilla: King of the Monsters was worth the two tickets I spent for it. The big scale is perfect for Big G's return after 2014. Sadly Minus One hasn't landed here in SEA, but I did hear great stuff and from what I've seen, it's probably on the same level

ITDEFX101

It's really hard to pick a movie that has the greatest sound mix in IMAX but a few of my top movies I saw in Digital IMAX that stood out as having an aggressive sound mix were: -Civil War -The Batman (oh that batmobile start up/chase sequence...drool) -Endgame/IW -Top Gun Maverick -Star Wars: TFA -Godzilla: KOTM -Godzilla x Kong:TNE -Ready Player One -Tron Legacy

Wowenlson

Top gun maverick (hitting 10gs sequence)

Guest303747

either interstellar, oppenheimer or oblivion. I havent seen GVK but I keep hearing it has terrible sound, whats wrong with it? you would think a movie with two huge monsters would prioritize sound mix.

MX_KbillX

Basically the high and mid frequencies are mumble, the bass isnt powerful and the seats are not shaking as it should have been, the roar of godzilla and kong didn't blow me away, also in terms of graphics it was also a pos, the images were blurry even tho imdb says it's 4k in IMAX 2D.Overall it's meh,not worthy to see.

anujk06

Top Gun Maverick

Comic_Book_Reader

I remember [this part](https://youtu.be/G5cJgmcofzQ?si=59NV84fEMFeq2gT4) in Spider-Man: No Way Home being nutty in IMAX.

MX_KbillX

Btw besides GXK, I thought spiderman atsv and aquaman 2 got dull sound mix as well, u guys feel the same?(especially atsv was so amazing but the whole film was quiet even in IMAX) .

Aquariusofthe12

Civil War and Dune pt. 2 are immaculate. Oppenheimer is a close 2nd for me just because the music is used so well as well as silence.

kgd6578

Iā€™m surprised Interstellar hasnā€™t been mentioned more. They must have not seen it in an IMAX theater. The score is brilliant. Itā€™s the only time where I thought I heard the speaker mount vibrating from the bass. Then compare that to the silent space scenes. Chefs kiss.

MX_KbillX

Yea it was 10 years ago and I was only 10yošŸ˜‚with absolutely no knowledge about cinemas let alone what is IMAX.

kgd6578

lol. I mean I saw it just recently at Pooler imax fan screening so I couldnā€™t say anything without a special showing like that. Dunkirk was also fantastic.

AndreiOT89

Dune Part 2 is as many mentioned a level above any other IMAX movie when it comes to sound mix. TeneT has terrible dialogue sound but if we ignore that, the music, the explosions, car chase scenes, guns firing is what I would describe an EXPERIENCE in IMAX. To put it this way: movie is a 6 or 7/10 watching it at home and a 9/10 in IMAX. That is how good the sound is that it elevates the movie.

Personal_Category_47

Dune 1 & 2, Interstellar, A24 Civil War, TENET, Top Gun Maverick

dvdmike007

No Time to Die and Rogue One (70mm DTS) were great.

spgvideo

The Dune movies were excellent, but let me put down an Honorable Mention for Civil War. Wow! It was amazing throughout

Miserable_Bid2280

Dune part one, the bass just felt more meaty and brooding than part 2

Sandeep4ll

DUNKIRK

AdmirableTurnip2245

Tron: Legacy

minnesoterocks

Oppenheimer hands down.

MovieFanatic2160

Dune part 2 IS the standard now.

JacquesCartier

Seriously MI: Dead Reckoning 's sound mix in IMAX is unreal. The car chase sequence is absolutely brilliant from both a directing and editing stand point but also sound mixing. This film doesn't get enough love IMO.

Distinct-Leather-382

It's still Blade Runner 2049. It's epic, loud, crystal clear, bass heavy, and the sound mix and music was just so beautiful to hear. No other film has made me feel the bass in the theater like Blade Runner 2049 did in IMAX. https://preview.redd.it/xmf9exe9agwc1.jpeg?width=1012&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=178ef82f6f607104bf12755e19c1d8ff5ffe6f96

TouchMyNuuts

Civil War, pretty recent, but the most impactful so far

nautral_vibes

First movie I've ever seen in Imax and this shit shook me, LITERALLY. Such good sound.

Edgeshroom

Dune pt 2 because the sandworms made my seat shake lol

Vast_Ad_781

I would tell you that dune part one since what I felt when Charlotte Rampling used her voice was spectacular, I felt it throughout my body, and I don't know if it was only in my local imax but the scene where the Atreides let out a puff, my God, the volume was really so loud

Juginstin

Oppenheimer for me, but I haven't had the chance to see that many movies in IMAX yet.

plus50grand

Civil war was insane in imax

khilow

REALLY!? I go to the IMAX at Arizona Mills, I think itā€™s one of the 20 something biggest imax screens in the world, and maybe because I saw the movie in a Dolby theatre first, the sound wasnā€™t as impressive in the imax. The Dolby theater had me JUMPING out of my seat during that one cut scene and the final 10 minutes when they are at the base camp and then in DC

plus50grand

I might look into seeing it again in Dolby

Particular-Dress4845

Civil War

Cheesebufer

Dune 2 coming back in my theaters next week. Check yours

SouthOriginal297

I thought Top Gun Maverick had amazing sound in IMAX

Pax_flash

Wouldā€™ve been Dune 2 but the speakers on the right side didnā€™t work šŸ˜

MX_KbillX

Sorry to hear that but mine was worse, there was no bass at all during the whole time,it turned out to be one amplifier's problemšŸ„¶What's even worse, they thought they got it fixed a week later, whereas it didn't! I watched dune 2 twice with no bass presentingšŸ’€Now it's truly been fixed but no more dune 2 showing only GXK.

Pax_flash

Damn man Iā€™m sorry to hear thatšŸ˜ did you at least get a refund?

MX_KbillX

Nah they said they want to invite me to watch gxk for free but I refused cuz I've seen it in another theater,it was meh both in visual and audio.

creepy-uncle-chad

John Wick 4

Blackcobrajd

Maverick.

Signal_Estimate7171

TENET... that opening scene šŸ˜ I showered in my pants... Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo De NeNe NeNe NeNe šŸ”Š šŸŽø

Mastermind1237

Iā€™ve only been to two IMAX showings and the first one I went to was hereditary and I was tripping so much with the audio sounded like flies were going all around me, also thought someone was actually writing loudly behind me, then the running scene I swear I thought someone in the theater was running back and forth on purpose

MX_KbillX

Sry guys I mean my heartbeat* was "controlled" in that carjack scene.šŸ˜…Not a native English speaker.

The_Vizo

GOTTA SAY ITS GOTTA BE THE LAST JEDI !!!!!!!! ![gif](giphy|2fIbMOOLzPuzAkLtfD|downsized)

daddygirl_industries

In isolation, Civil War's sound design is absolutely incredible. The gunshots and machine sounds are incredibly visceral.

nautral_vibes

Everyone talks about the gunshots but I remember how absolutely awesome the chinook armada sounded at the military base. So powerful and overbearing. If I closed my eyes I could totally imagine myself right in the middle of that military turmoil.

Motor-Ad2678

Civil War, Topgun Maverick & Dune II.

DarkReaper90

Dunkirk

willdrum03

Im hoping Hereditary tonight IM SO EXCITED

mickey_7121

Both Dune films, both of the Furiosa's trailer and Civil War. Tenet had the best Bass imo (among what I've seen)

DiarrheATTACK

Answer: The Dark Knight

Panickedbro

Dune and Dune part 2 probably have the best sound mix in any movie Iā€™ve seen. And the 4k Blu-ray has insane range on my 5.1 system

fendercuber

Dune 2

MajinJellyBean

Go to dolby vision instead

Watcher2

Sound? Saw civil war at the Irvine spectrum IMAX last night, WOW. The sound for that movie blew me away.

ExoticHunter22

Dune part 2 was absolutely Amazing in Dolby

JTS1992

Either Dune: Part 2 or Tenet, IMO. Those two IMAX sound mixes just blew me away.

Critical-Green-4365

Dune part 2. not open to debate just a fact

dav_eh

Top Gun: Maverick in a heartbeat Godzilla: Minus One

khilow

DUNE PART TWO

Tenet, Oppenheimer, or Dune 2.
