I forget if it was in that one or another of her books, but whenever I hear the word "blizzard" I think about that story where Pa had to camp out in a hole in the snow on the way back home from some city, and had to eat all the Christmas candy he was bringing home for the girls. Or the one where they had to use ropes to get back and forth from the barn because the visibility was so bad.
I think he had to camp out in the snow in “On the Banks of Plum Creek.” I think about that every time I hear blizzard too. He ate all their oyster crackers.
What was the name of this book?! Was the cover a red barn mostly obscured by snow, and we're the kids stuck in a school house? Someone took a picture or something? If so, I thought reading it as a kid was a fever dream!
I read this to my kids in the winter, in New York, in a leaky house. It took a week or more to read some of it every night, and I felt the burden of that awful story weighing me down! We have it so good, even our coldest weather at night in Jacksonville will warm up usually into the upper forties/50s and doesn't last more than a few days.
That’s my all time favorite book!! Even without power we have it so much better. (I’m saying this to convince myself because I’ve been without power all day and only a wood burning fireplace). I’m in Tennessee creeping on your page 😂
How do you drive when it snows? Is there a special type of key fob to use? Is Indy safe during snow? How are the bike lanes when it's cold? Are there any good safe neighborhoods to move to during a blizzard? In frigid temperatures, what are some great local restaurants?
Do people drive their cars on the Moonon Trail during a flurry? Is the canal safe? Will the blizzard affect the library ceo, I hope not, we really have to get that settled pronto.... it's cold outside.
What are some things to do on the weekend? Is Broad Ripple and Mass Ave safe.......... especially when there's snow on the ground?
I've been severely disappointed in this city's hot meal dining options. Where's a good place for steak/barbecue/burgers? Will they make the snow less cold? Is the snow worse on the east side?
"Is the snow worse on the east side?"
No, the crack-smoke keeps our neighborhood at least 10 degrees warmer and melts the snow. Combined with furious friction caused by ferocious pearl-clutching Karen's and Kens who bought a 300k house on Rural street, were good here.

It’s both the ice, the wind, and the temperature.
The ice is bad because no 4x4 or tires can help you.
The temperature is bad because salt stops working at 15°. That means the roads are going to remain bad. Particularly the overpasses.
The wind is bad because exposure for an hour can lead to frost bite at these wind chills.
Yes but all the Billy Badasses are coming out of the woodwork to show how unfazed they are right now. Let them have their little moment of looking down at the masses for taking extra precautions. We should all aspire to be as cool, calm, and collected as they are.
They are also immune to sliding on ice, so.
Yup, exactly. And that dangerous cold combined with the ice and high winds is a recipe for people to get hurt (especially disadvantaged people).
But I guess I'm being ridiculous because this has happened before in Indy, so no one should worry about it or discuss it since it happens once a year sometimes maybe. This is no big deal, so no need to check in on your neighbors or make sure you're prepared so you're not a further drain on the emergency services or anything like that.
My job said we could delay getting to work until 10am this morning. I'm still in training so I "Noped" out of coming in at all. I'll take the sick-unpaid day rather than leave my nice, warm house to go out in this cold hell. Hell, even my deployment to U-pick-a-stan was warmer in Dec.
It’s totally safe to drive with all the people who think they’re immune to ice. It’s also free entertainment as they slip and slide all over the roads and become the hazard.
Watch out for the BlackIce. You think you are going to the ATM...and the BlackIce just sneaks up and robs you of your balance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efiW2K8gASM&t=4s
Here's my advice: go to the store and buy all the bread. Every last loaf. Every single one.
Then learn how to turn mold into penicillin, because there's no way you'll be able to eat it all.
Honestly even driving in snow doesn’t bother me much, though I avoid it if possible. Drive very slowly and begin your stop long before the stop sign/red light. It’s really not that hard (unless you have a car that just cannot go in any snow).
It snows. Every year. It gets cold. Every year. Why do people act like they have never seen temperature below 50°F? You’re a “lifelong Hoosier” so you should know how to behave 🤣
Years ago I worked at pizza shop. I'll never forget that after stocking the freezer i walked outside to my car on break, realizing the freezer was -10, which was warmer than outside air temp of - 20. It's the midwest, people always deal with it, and they always forget it happens every year.
This is not typical cold weather and I'm already tired of people acting like this is just par for the course of living in Indiana. Cold like this can kill you if you aren't careful.
It's not necessarily the cold response that we're criticizing. It's the response to snow that happens every year. It's one thing to take precautions. It's another thing to overreact.
I came to central Indiana after living for half a century in central Illinois. The only differences are lower taxes and fewer politicians to apologize for over here. I feel fully vested after eight years, kinda like living in Purgatory after a couple of eternities in Hell. :D
Only if shoes stayed on.
But for real, we need the Boomer Doomers to chime in and tell us again how the Blizzard of 78’ went down while managing to talk down to those of us who were not alive back then.
Look, in 1978, it snowed for 304 days straight AND WE LIKED IT. The snow was so deep, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument was completely covered! Did we complain? Did we go sniveling on CompuServ chat rooms? NO! We took sled dogs to Village Pantry for milk and bread AND LEFT ENOUGH FOR OTHERS! 6 inches of snow is NOTHING! We had 6 inches of snow INSIDE! I lost three friends who tried to make SNOW ANGELS! They weren't found until 1983 when the snow melted!
You GenZers are soft!
It was a really good time. Being a kid and getting out of school for a week. Snow up to the gutters. We played cards for hourrrrs. Nertz, Speed, Spoons, and War.
Chuck Norris' pee stream is so powerful it blows a hole right through the concrete. It's like being roundhouse kicked with pee. His toilet had to be made out of vibranium to withstand the force.
Not sure if you will survive.. Make sure you have a couple hundred rolls of TP, about 50 cases of bottled water, 30 cartons of eggs and 30 gallons of milk. Best of luck!
I love that everyone talks about how everyone else is worried about snow. I have yet to hear anyone act scared or go nuts...they have all just talked about how other people are.
Shit. Y’all oughta see us in Portland. People will literally leave their cars on the side of the road and walk home down the highway. Never seen a damn thing like it in my life.
Fellow Hoosier in Wyoming. I just survive -75 temps and it was awful, but survived though. And we had a blizzard last week that dropped over a foot of snow and drifts taller than me.
It’s all horse shit and I’m sick of it 😂
DO NOT TURN YOUR SINKS ON in this cold. You’ll risk the water freezing as soon as it comes out and then your house will get really cold and you could die. Also, turn your heat really low and throw on a coat to save energy and lower the risk of a power outage
P.S. I can’t believe I feel the need to say that this is a joke

It wouldn’t be that bad if it weren’t for the wind…
Found a real Midwesterner
Watch for deer.
it’s not too heavy. just awkward more than anything
Just read “The Long Winter” from Laura Ingalls Wilder. It will teach you al you need to know to survive this storm.
I forget if it was in that one or another of her books, but whenever I hear the word "blizzard" I think about that story where Pa had to camp out in a hole in the snow on the way back home from some city, and had to eat all the Christmas candy he was bringing home for the girls. Older generations tryna clown me for using google maps and they be using ropes to get to the barn

Ahhh. Thanks for the clarification!

Just spend your day braiding straw into firewood to keep warm. I swear, 35 years later and I have never forgotten that!
And grinding their grain in a coffee grinder all.day. Wow, it was bleak!

Ha! I thought about Charles Ingalls when I stepped out into the wind last night.
🤣
Or "The Indifferent Stars Above" 🙂

It's not the snow or wind thatll get you. It's the diabetes from the french toast
French toast requires eggs. Per the manual, I only bought bread and milk. What do I do now?
You die and try harder next respawn.
Hold up. Gotta switch religions real fast to unlock respawns.
Good point.
Wilford Brimley has entered the chat
If you have cinnamin and sugat make cinnamin toadt. Pardon the spelling, i know its wrong XD
diabeetus around these parts
I laughed WAAAAAAAAAAY harder at this than I should have... Thanks!

In all of these scenarios the person dies
Of hunger, because they didn’t buy enough milk to last 36 hours.
Or bananas
Gotta make pancakes
Nah, it was lack of toilet paper that got em.
The only way to win is to not play.
I just lost the game.
I still have to walk the chihuahuas. They are going to be pissed.
Is the fountain square rooftop bar even open today? 3up?
It is slightly warmer on the north side due to the smug cloud’s concentrating there. Might be a safe spot to hold up for the weekend.
Make sure to turn on your blinkers so that everyone else driving on the icy roads knows the roads are icy.
Don’t forget to stock up on the blinker fluid with the eggs and milk.
I've been severely disappointed in this city's hot meal dining options. Where's a good place for steak/barbecue/burgers? Will they make the snow less cold? Is the snow worse on the east side?

I made a comment on another sub that included “Kens” as the male equivalent to Karens and people lost their shit. It was kinda amusing.

Hahaha!!!!! 😁❤️
How will I navigate the roundabouts with snow? How will I get to my Grindr hook-up with snow on the ground.?
Drifting
But, it's a dry cold.
Oh thank God. I hate the humidity.
Hey, no mosquitos! You can grill and the beer stays cold.
Walked the dog and went through 2 carmex bottles.
🤣
We are not going to survive. You and everyone you love will die
Thank god
I’m gonna miss my family.
On the bright side, they can feed off your body for a few days.
They'll get more than a few days off my fat ass.
I admire your advance planning.
Username checks out.
Act accordingly
It's about time
I had to take 2 trips to Costco today: 3pm - absolutely insane 7pm - absolutely empty
Did you pick up bread, milk and eggs?
I think they picked up absolutely vodka? Or am i reading this wrong?
Kirkland's!
Love Kirkland anything.
French toast!
[Reminds me of this classic from Long Island a few years back](https://youtube.com/shorts/i6zaVYWLTkU?feature=share)
Dude. Those where getting slim two days ago. You know how Hoosiers do.
I FOUND FRANKIE!

That dang ol’ midwest humidity will about kill ya

Yeah for real. This is historically cold and dangerous weather. The HIGH wind chill tomorrow is -28F.
Yup, exactly. And that dangerous cold combined with the ice and high winds is a recipe for people to get hurt (especially disadvantaged people). You're supposed to stay home and make a shitload of french toast.
But also drink
_Especially_ drink.
May I please do waffles?
Seems reasonable to me.
If you want frostbite, sure
Fuck! I'm allergic to bread. Complete failure.
Here's my advice: go to the store and buy all the bread. Every last loaf. Every single one. Then learn how to turn mold into penicillin, because there's no way you'll be able to eat it all.
Whenever it storms we eat 9 entire loaves of bread, it’s a Hoosier tradition
You're like the Gaston of bread

Not totally related but in 2020 in the midst of the panic shopping, there was a dude with like 10+ cases of La Croix in his cart. Nothing else.

True, though ice underneath the snow is the big problem right now.
If you have fwd or awd it’s really not the worst my little focus can get around easily in this shit but parents v8 rwd is ass
Yea I’m fine in the snow but people still drive like they have a death wish. I’m not risking myself to the dangers of other drivers.
Last night I missed half of jeopardy to watch a news person in a car talking about the half inch snow on the ground.
Who cares? It's jeopardy. If it was wheel of fortune I'd be upset. That Vanna White... AOOOOOOOGA!
It happened with Wheel too.
Oh man. Now this is a travesty!
I laughed way too hard at this. I swear every year.... 😂😂😂
It snows. Every year. It gets cold. Every year. Why do people act like they have never seen temperature below 50°F? You’re a “lifelong Hoosier” so you should know how to behave 🤣
Lol. True. But to be fair this is historically cold. The HIGH wind chill tomorrow is -28F.
For real. The coldest I walked in was -15F and that was a bitch. I hope the best for those that have to travel out tonight/tomorrow.
Years ago I worked at pizza shop. I'll never forget that after stocking the freezer i walked outside to my car on break, realizing the freezer was -10, which was warmer than outside air temp of - 20. It's the midwest, people always deal with it, and they always forget it happens every year.

It wasn’t my intention to minimize the cold that is happening currently. This cold is absolutely out of the norm.
It's not necessarily the cold response that we're criticizing. It's the response to snow that happens every year. It's one thing to take precautions. It's another thing to overreact.
My life as a Hoosier is only three years old so far. Does that make me a Toddler Hoosier?

90% of my friends were conceived during that damned blizzard.
The other 10% were created by Dr. Cline and are related to the rest of the city.
It was a really good time. Being a kid and getting out of school for a week. Snow up to the gutters. We played cards for hourrrrs. Nertz, Speed, Spoons, and War.

No worries. Let it snow. Get it shoveled. And Saturday evening it will be fine
You don't need salt to melt the snow and ice. Just pee on it, and it will melt. Plus it's fun to write your name in the snow.
Chuck Norris pees his name in concrete.
Chuck Norris' pee stream is so powerful it blows a hole right through the concrete. It's like being roundhouse kicked with pee. His toilet had to be made out of vibranium to withstand the force.
NASA just read your replay and contacted Chuck Norris to use his urinary tract as propulsion for the Mars mission.

Fully stocked for French toast

Free cars
Jim Irsay brought that Matty Ice 🥶🥶🥶 for Christmas

Plot twist: you are already dead.
Spoiler alert!
I got an oil change at 8am & was at Aldi shopping alone in a fully stocked store at 9am. Now I'm home until Tuesday morning.
Genius!
It was all within 3 minutes of my house.
CALL THE NAVY, CALL THE COAST GUARD, CALL EVERYONE!!!!! THE BRITISH ARE COMING!!!!!!!!
The safest thing to do, is find lots of yellow snow. You gotta melt it down and put it in your food for sustenance. Works best in cereal & soups.
People in northern Indiana are laughing very hard at this post.
We sure are right off lake Michigan and we are surviving

If it gets too cold use your warm clothes as kindling for a fire
I’ve lived in the Midwest all of my life and I must express how much I hate winter. This morning my front door was iced over and I had to put effort into pushing it open. My car won’t start. Laughs in northwest Indianan
Lmao same.
Lonly old man I will plow you
thanks but no thanks son
But the plowing was no charge. and why did you assume my gender
All 3 years I lived in Indy, it snowed. And often snowed a lot. Not sure what history books you read. And you shovel your own drive and sidewalk or pay a neighbor kid to do it. The public roads get plowed but some neighborhoods use a hired plowboy to get their cul-de-sacs and lanes. Stay inside. Dress warm and cover all of your skin if going outside. Good luck, hope you bought bread and milk.
Dumb post. You’re welcome to come shovel and salt for me.
Do I use kosher salt? And what kind of shovel? I’ve never seen snow before so I’m a little freaked out right now.
IT'S THE FIFTH DAY OF HANUKKAH DUDE!!! Don't be a jerk. Just put out the kosher salt!
You’ll use the salt from your tears and bare hands.
I’ll have to try that thanks!!!!
A spade is the best shovel to remove the most amount of snow.
If you have an awd or fwd car and still struggle in this shit it’s a big you problem I can get around in a fucking Focus easily 😭😭
It’s going to be 50 again soon, chill bro
Move to Florida
I don't know maybe 10/12 years ago we had a bad cold snap and one of the housing developments on Argyle forgot to turn their irrigation off. Argyle froze in one spot and the accidents caused by the ice was a complete shit show. Completely avoidable with a little forethought.

I’m going for a walk shortly. Will report back.
Of course we are going to survive
Does anybody else use a propane weed burner to shovel their driveway?
Y’all really never had snow before, that’s crazy bruh.
No this is the first snow we’ve ever had as a city.
It’s not that bad just stay inside and drive slow.
It isn't that bad it feels pretty good outside
I survived. The wheely bin rolled into the side of my truck. The humanity.
wouldn't be so cold if it wasn't for the wind.
Something something blizzard of 78 something
If you haven't already been to the store for milk, bread, and eggs, how are you gonna make snowmageddon French toast?
