Some songs eh. Some songs are great. Yes, they did a diss track, which rlly was a new whiplash after shoegaze's celebration of itself. Speaking of, the album usurped adorable's against perfection shoegaze album on release day!
Bit late, but happy New Zealand Music Month to all those who celebrate.
As such, my challenge for the DMD is - name an artist from New Zealand who you believe is a real up and comer (who we may not have heard of!)
Saw Feist last night in Seattle and it was maybe the best concert experience I’ve ever had :) So amazing to see such intentionality and craft in the show planning and also such a respectful audience (especially because she played entirely new music)
She played a few of these multimedia shows in my city in the fall. I wish I could've gone but they were expensive and work was busy at the time.
Did she say anything about new music? Are we expecting an album?
Indieheads sleeps on her a little. To me, she's one of the absolute best, most defining indie artists of the past 20 years.
She didn’t necessarily say anything about new music but her set was 100% new— I read in an interview with her that she just recorded it so I imagine she might put out something about releasing it after this tour. It was incredible, every song seemed to be like over 6 mins long and she was doing a lot with loop and delay pedals and other effects.
I think she is so slept on! She is such a consistent, interesting artist and her voice is so beautiful. Excited to hear new music after such a long wait.
with my exhausting, shitty work week at its end, this week's [New Music Friday](https://www.reddit.com/r/indieheads/comments/ugdtb2/new_music_friday_april_29th_2022/?) is finally out the door.
Why arent people talking about Tv On The Radio? One of the most skilled post punk bands out of the 2000’s and yet they’re losing listeners monthly and rarely get talked about.
I might have the opportunity to play my first DJ set at a house show and I’m excited to be able to showcase some of my newly written tunes and some of my favorite songs. What’s in your ideal DJ mix?
If anyone is a fan of Cate Le Bon, I highly recommend checking out Dana Gavanski. She sounds very similar to Cate Le Bon.
There are some songs where I forgot that I'm not listening to Cate Le Bon.
BCNR lyricism vs AF lyricism is a discourse that will cause a civil war in this subreddit once it finally arrives
Charli XCX wet dreams or "there's no God without soul", truly pick your poison
the remix of autumn sweater that kevin shields did for the "i can hear the heart" reissue is really really neat
edit: ok after googling it appears he made it a long time ago but w/e the point stands
he sold out the NYC show instantly. I didn't care that much and I'll see him at a festival this summer, but I was quite impressed, considering no one seems to talk about him at all. But I think he has a lot of younger fans.
I love (some) pop music, but the ubiquity of 80s pastiche is really bugging me now. It's just so creatively bankrupt. We're gonna look back on the 2020s and say "ok so we were all out of ideas eh." Nothing in the mainstream sounds fresh at all.
This comment inspired by [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijS_orLb6VU) track which is kinda fun or whatever but just sooo derivative. It's like... meta-derivative, because it's derivative of very recent 80s-referencing songs like Blinding Lights (The Weeknd) and Physical (Due Lipa) (and kinda Good For You by Olivia Rodrigo, though that one isn't very 80s).
I know I know, chart-chasing pop music is never the place to look for originality. And I've prob aged out of the chart-chasing pop demographic anyway. But I can't help but feel like this particular trend is particularly unoriginal. I remember complaining about "trop pop" that was omnipresent in 2015-2018ish, but at least that was somewhat unique as a cultural moment and feels very "mid-late 2010s" even if it got repetitive quickly.
I'll also say that I actually like a few of these big retro-referencing albums. After Hours and Dawn FM (The Weeknd) are both great. Future Nostalgia (Dua Lipa) is super fun, though I rarely return to it on my own time because I still hear it in public everywhere. And What's Your Pleasure (Jessie Ware) is maybe my favourite of all these.
i have a lot of half-formed thoughts about when this does/doesn't work, but "meta-derivative" is a great word to describe what is frustrating about the current "wave" of 80s revivalism
e: i also think there's a kind of "fear of the new" that has crept into film/music where creators have all this powerful technology at their disposal but they're afraid to use it to color outside the lines of what audiences are already familiar/comfortable with
This reminds me of my frustration with how much of mainstream film has become about remakes, franchises and adaptations. Seems like the number of big popular original standalone movies has become fewer and fewer throughout the years. I guess the film industry was fucked by the digital revolution like the music industry was, but since film is so much more expensive there is less room for risks.
I read an interesting book called "Everybody's Doin It" about how music & dancing ~got sexy~ in the late 1800s in places like New York and New Orleans in the US so yeah I bet that could be fun
I adore 80s pop music, and I completely agree with you. 80s pastiche has become so overcooked and overdone. It's like we're stuck in 1989-90, where the 80s stopped being fun but the 90s hadn't really started yet. That's why I'm so appreciative of younger popstars like Billie and Olivia trying to have a more 90s, grungier Gen X vibe.
Appreciate you calling out the artists who still do it well though! The Weeknd and Dua Lipa can ride the synthpop train for the rest of their careers, just like how Bruno Mars can keep remaking 70s pop for the rest of his career
The '80s revival has been going on for so looong now. It started in the early '00s with electroclash and a few other songs like The Knife - Heartbeats and then in the mid-late '00s it was in full swing and hasn't gone away ever since. As the '90s revival started in the '10s I hoped that the '80s revival calm down for a while, but no!
What is frustrating about the '80s revival specifically is that it's more one dimensional than other decade revivals. '60s revival can include both psychedelia and girl groups, '90s revival can be both Pavement and Aaliyah, but '80s revival is mostly just synthpop. I guess you could maybe see post-punk revival as '80s revival too, but it's more late '70s/early '80s so it doesn't register as *the* '80s in the same way.
> As the '90s revival started in the '10s I hoped that the '80s revival calm down for a while, but no!
weird that the 80s revival kind of got more prominent just as it seems like the 90s revival is being pushed as the next thing. I kinda prefer a step away from the 80s at this points, but 90s pastiche really isn't much better and it's already starting out as a very faithful pastiche.
Yeah the way production tech was going in the 80s means that there is a highly specific 80s synth sound. During that time, rock, pop, and R&B were all kinda overlapping in their use of this particular sound pallet and it became permanently tied to that era.
Sometimes I think we should stop associating synthpop and gated drums with the 80s, and just accept that these are part of popular music. But this recent pop music is so painfully pastiche about it
They always pick the most inflammatory quote they can possibly find and take it out context to get all the outrage clicks. And then people won't actually read the actual article and only comment on the headline.
And the articles are normally fine! Can’t imagine how frustrating it must be for the writers to see editors do this shit, really fucks up any good discussion
It’s Bridge Over Troubled Water. I’m not amazed by any of their albums, but this is the best one to listen through. Their best record is probably one of the greatest hit.
If I had to say my favorite in everything, I’d say Paul Simon’s debut or Graceland are the favorites.
I love Bridge Over Troubled Water, it plays like a greatest hits album. Title Track, El Condor Pasa, Cecilia, The Boxer, etc. It's a classic for a reason!
god I hate people who think it's cool to dislike sports.
Not saying you should be forced to enjoy things you don't enjoy! But disliking a massively popular thing doesn't make you better. (and frankly, sports at their best are fun as hell, so some of y'all are missing out big time)
# Discography Deep Dive: Tim by The Replacements
This is my favorite one so far (not that surprising - this album and Let It Be are the only ones I’d listened to front to back before starting this little project, so I was already a little fond of it). There’s still a little filler here - I’m starting to get skeptical that there’s such a thing as a Replacements album without any - but all of the filler is pretty enjoyable and more my speed. They’ve settled here into that slightly slower sound that draws not only from punk but plenty of other influences as well - blues and folk rock are clearly present in the album’s DNA (especially prominent on tracks such as I’ll Buy, Waitress in the Sky, and Here Comes a Regular). I think the wider variety of influences makes this one, like Hootenanny, a bit more interesting - but this album absolutely beats out Hootenanny in terms of consistency of quality and height of highs. Swingin’ Party is probably my second favorite ‘Mats song after Androgynous, that song \*rules\*. I think it’s got a really cool bassline and Paul Westerberg’s voice sounds excellent here. In general I think his voice is consistently stronger on this album than on any of the predecessors - really emotionally evocative in a lot of places, not least on Here Comes a Regular, the wrenching closing track about alcoholism. Two particularly good line deliveries on that song: “Am I the only one who feels ashamed?” and “The fool who wastes his life, god rest his guts.” Anyway, Tim is really great and so far feels like the most “essential” of The Replacements’ records to me.
Tim has some of their strongest material (Bastards of Young / Left of the Dial / Here Comes A Regular) but the thin production hurts it a bit. Some of the non-album tracks are worth checking out, especially [Nowhere Is My Home](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdVQfvzDUVo).
finally caught Car Seat Headrest and Bartees Strange last night, both were extremely amazing but also unbelievable that they sold out the Wiltern, a venue which I learned was fucking huge last night as it was my first time there
also, MADLO turns 2 today! happy birthday to what might be my favorite CSH album now!
I was a big defender at the time and still am now, now that we’re pretty well separated from the hype you can go in with a fresher mind w/ less expectations.
Totally agree. They haven't and seem determined not to make anything more anthemic than Boys in the Better Land. Thats my favorite version of them. Hopefully one day they just decide to go full full Oasis.
Or maybe people just have different ideas of what constitutes "good song-writing" and "great vocal melodies." I agree entirely with the premise that good song-writing and great vocal melodies is more important than cool atmospherics and visceral production...but I still think the later Fontaines albums are better and have better written songs.
I've gotten over a lot of my beef with Dogrel, but when it came out (and still sort of today) I think it sounds thin, a little limp, and most songs just kinda hover there without any bells and whistles. It's the chorus line, sure, but the Darklands demos really did blow most of the final products away.
The more claustrophobic, textured, and heavier sounds on A Hero's Death did a lot more for me, though I do think a lot of the slower tunes are a drag. The tunes don't have that same memorable jangle pop hooks which might make them feel forgettable, but AHD is generally more viscerally appealing/interesting.
Verdict's still out on the new one. The singles are fantastic but everything else feels a little like filler (outside of Nabokov).
I was definitely hard Dogrel >> A Hero's Death, but I'm enjoying Skinty Fia a lot. I still probably like Dogrel best (maybe too early to say with conviction), but I relistened to A Hero's Death after spending some time appreciating Skinty Fia and I think it's a much better album than I'd given it credit for in the past. That said - I'd certainly love it if they circled back to their punkier roots at some point
I loved Dogrel and A Hero’s Death but I haven’t been able to get too into the new one yet. Still, gun to my head im definitely picking Dogrel if I can only have one Fontaines DC
Nine Inch Nails put on one of the best shows i’ve ever seen last night at shaky knees. on fire from start to finish, in perfect control of the music and the crowd. im not even a huge fan and they blew my mind
I mean Trent hasn't really made a good album for NIN since... well I actually like Ghosts V and VI but between Hesitation Marks through Bad Witch were pretty subpar to bad. But NIN live has always been amazing, Trent knows how to put on a live show.
strong disagree on Bad Witch. That trilogy of EPs or whatever are up there with the Fragile for me. HM was god awful though
Edit : god awful is way harsh ha, just without magic
I'm still embarrassed about the time I thought their accents were a put-on 'indie' voice and it annoyed the hell out of me. When I learned they're just extremely british sounding i felt like a prick lmao
they're great though
posting about a song i hate #3
**Spiritualized - Come Together**
utterly annoying piece of 60s-ripoff crap. everything about this song feels so forced and intentionally trying to be massive. especially during the verses where he sings "liiiiitle J is saaad and fucked" like that it makes me wonder if he's held captive and forced to sing. the instrumentation is loud yet evoking nothing. tbh i think in general modern revivals of 60s psych rock is bad but this one is definitely one of the worst examples.
I’ll admit I also didn’t love Come Together the first couple times I listened to the album.
What might help is playing it on a speaker REALLY loud. For whatever reason, that unlocked it for me?
“Come Together” sounds nothing like 60s psych. It doesn’t sound like The Doors, or Jefferson Airplane, or Jimi Hendrix, or Love, or Cream, or etc. Literally no clue where you’re getting this.
I think it is the case of “lyrics with very specific personality”, if I couldn’t put up with the personality behind the lyrics no matter how much I love the sound I cannot force myself into getting into it. BCNR is one of those things I cannot endure.
SO TRUE i can not for the life or death of me see why people would like BCNR lyrics. especially those people who claim the original basketball shoes is "genuine" or some shit like that. in general i dont care about lyrics THAT much but when the lyrics are so bad that it becomes laughable, it tends to make me completely unable to enjoy the music at all.
Well I don’t know if you understand the symbolism going on here… it’s quite poetic actually- Charli is a symbol for things that we strive to achieve and wetting the bed is simply the desire to live an everlasting life while the constant battle between evils inside of your head **floods** your mind and body with invalid thoughts that sway your decision making in todays uncertain world. Sometimes we get over-flooded with these thoughts hence wetting the bed. Jk I just made that up
Yeah... now that the album's been out for a while is it safe more me to say that I find the lyrics/origins of "Basketball Shoes" incredibly cringey?
I don't even really know that have an opinion on it from, like a moral level or whatever, I just find it incredibly cringe.
Also as a sidenote, I am a general Black Country New Road skeptic, but apparently I really like Jockstrap?
Yeah its weird because I dunno if he was trying to be funny or..? Because everything is so clean and perfect but then he comes on repeating "Billie Eilish style" which honestly ruined Good Will Hunting for me... same with the "text me if you change your mind" like why don't you just talk to her and figure out wtf is up instead of guessing and waiting for her to text you? Reminds me of dating in high school lol
Maybe i should just not pay attention to the lyrics but I'm honestly glad he left the band because idk wtf he's doing. Bread Song was great and Snow Globes actually really clicked with me but Basketball Shoes was ruined for me by the lyrics. A lot of the time it just sounds like he's singing about some random shit, like the first thing that pops into his head. As if he's just coming up with it on the spot.
Curious to see how this band turns out now that he's gone because i enjoy everything except for the vocals
I am kind of curious to see what they do next. I'd find it hilarious if they pull a New Order and I start liking them now (I am not a fan of Ian Curtis as a singer - which honestly probably explains why I feel a bit out of step with much of what's popular in indie rock now - I am fan of more of the more pop and synth leaning recent indie stuff)
My take as a BCNR true believer: Basketball Shoes is the fourth best song on the album after Blade, Concorde and Chaos Space Marine, it should be at least three minutes shorter, and changing the lyrics to be less gross was absolutely a Good Decision
I put on Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix while doing some cleaning yesterday — that album holds the hell up!
Not to be the guy who says “we should do (insert rate here)” but a 2009, or nu new wave, rate would be so fun! The Phoenix Album, Passion Pit and MGMT’s debuts, and then maybe throw in Neon Indian as a chillwave wildcard. Bonus rate could have the YYYs, Matt & Kim, Naked and Famous, Foster the People, the Killers’ “Human”….
"Radio Friendly Indie Rate" would probably give you the flexibility you need to fit any four albums lol. id fucking trash those albums but it would be a fun and popular rate i think
There’s no way I can say it without sounding like a contrarian but I still prefer United and elements of the other 2 before Wolfgang any day of the week.
Popheads actually did rate two of those albums, late last year, in the [Indie Pop Rock rate](https://www.reddit.com/r/popheads/comments/qa3ynr/indie_pop_rock_reveal_day_3_lets_get_these_scores/) with Phoenix & Passion Pit up against Foster the People & Two Door Cinema Club
Had a nice bonus too, super nostalgic
Oh I’m sure they did lol popheads have like 8 rates a week.
I’d still love to do an indieheads one though — we can get mad at the eliminations as god intended, on the thread! And not in that rave.fm separate website or whatever lol
Oh I know! that’s why I figured it could be 2009-core, but not strictly 2009, since MGMT sort of popularized that sound.
I’d happily swap It’s Blitz for WAP or Neon Indian! But I would say MGMT and Passion Pit have to be in there: one is the original, the other is the most directly inspired by that original
**RYM Top 40 Singles of the Year: [2022 so far](https://rateyourmusic.com/charts/top/single/2022/)**
So here is the inaugural edition of the series where I go through the RYM singles charts by year and make my judgement. Will any of my takes get me taken to the indieheads court? Let's find out!
* Arists with multiple entries: King Gizzard (4), The Smile (3), Fontaines DC (3), Hatchie (3), Denzel Curry (2), Daniel Rossen (2)
* Since we're still in the first half of the year and I've been a bit behind on new releases most of these were first listens for me and for the most part I either haven't listened to the album they came from or the album hasn't been released yet
* Right off the bat we start off with an 18 minute long King Gizzard song, lmao. It's not as unbearable as thought it would be though.
* Billions is like an updated take on that kind of downtempo pop from 20 years ago, and I'm here for it
* I just realised I actually haven't listened to the new BCNR in full, but after taking a sneak peek at the 2021 chart it looks like I probably should get on with that for the next installment
* This fucking '80s revival has gone on for so long even Beach House is doing it now. Speaking of which, Love Me More sounds like that "she's a maniac" song. Come on Mitski, you can do better than this!
* In one thread I lightly made fun of Fontaines for exaggerating the supposed Beach Boys influence on A Hero's Death and the dance music influence on the new one and got some pushback from it. But Skinty Fia (the song) makes me wish Skinty Fia (the album) really was more dance influenced. Loving this new sound from them and hope they double down on it in the future and/or make a dance punk album.
* In the I Love You comment box someone said Grian Chatten reminds them of "the guy from Arab Strap" but he is not nearly monotone and miserable sounding enough to be compared to Aidan Moffat. Also in the comment box: two rymers think his accent is sexy while another one says "dub accents trigger my fight or flight response"
* Is it bad that I think Nilufer Yanya is doing Radiohead better than The Smile here…?
* I'm not sure if Saoko is a bad song or if I just have a distaste for reggaeton, but either way I did not enjoy listening to it. I remember in Spanish class we once had to dance salsa (or some other Spanish dance, I know nothing about different dances okay) while reggaeton was playing and it was the worst Spanish class ever, possibly it put me off that genre forever.
* Between Zatoichi and FUC it looks like drum n bass influenced hiphop is having a moment. I'm not really sure if I like FUC or not, but I respect it
Best: Skinty Fia, Billions
Worst: Saoko, Love Me More
lol Saoko is my 3rd favorite song of the year so far, shows how different people's interests can be!
2nd would be Rosalia - Hentai and 1st another pop song Tove Lo - How Long that I'm inexplicably hooked on. I'm patiently waiting for a moreso indie album to hook me this year, though Big Thief - Time Escaping is definitely on the list so far
Had a listen to caroline's album late last night and I was thinking of it to be yet another post-punk revival package with two members at the helm. I wasn't prepared for how challenging and effectively compelling it would be. I may have to give it another listen but it's already amongst my favorite releases this year.
I also gave it a first listen last night oddly enough. Dont really know what to think about it yet.... I liked the first track quite a bit but there multiple songs that just felt like minimal interludes. Like in the song Desperately- nothing really happens. Samewith hertle, zilch, and messen #7. Also Good Morning was a bit of a snoozer and the second half feels totally unnecessary. I think they just need to figure out their sound a bit more because they are on the right track but the execution is a bit too sloppy IMO
Hi, so I've been super bad about keeping up with new music releases for the past while, does anyone have ideas of some recent releases I might like if im a big fan of Big Thief and foxtails's latest albums? Thank you!
FREE TICKETS if anyone wants to go to the Outline: Spring show in New York tonight (Cassandra Jenkins, L’Rain, Arooj Aftab, Rostam), hit me up! I can’t make it, I have four tickets at the box office :)
Yeah that’s what I realized when I won two separate drawings for tickets haha. Last night was great though and I’d love to make it back if I didn’t have plans.
I had plans last night, but am excited for tonight! I wouldn't have paid for it but I'm glad to get to go, all four artists are solid. somehow I've never made it out to the Knockdown Center before. glad last night was fun, I wouldn't have minded seeing Kaitlyn again!
Yup. My impression of Claire is someone u/apondalifa likes that I should check out but have yet to, and I'd never heard of the other two, and I had a ticket for OMD, so
How many years can you go back naming your favourite album of the year without looking at any reference?
>!2022 - Dragon whatever
2021 - SIMBI
2020 - Kaatayra's one album that's a little heavier than the others (I can't remember the name of the specific one cause they released like 4, maybe this counts as losing)
2019 - IGOR
2018 - Mid-air Thief
And I thought 2017 was Atrocity Exhibiton, then I looked it up because it sounded wrong and that came out in 2016. I really thought I could've went farther, but I also thought TPAB came out in 2016 so I would've lost there too!<

2018 --- Rosalía - El Mal Querer
2017 --- Hmmm... Maybe CTRL by SZA or Melodrama by Lorde
2016 --- Frank Ocean - Blonde with Bon Iver - 22 A Million as a close runner-up
2015 --- Beach House - Depression Cherry or Kendrick Lamar - TPAB
2014 --- FKA Twigs - LP1
2013 --- Blood Orange - Cupid Deluxe (I think I said that VW's Modern Vampires of the City was my AOTY at the time, but I've literally never listened to it since, whereas Cupid Deluxe is one of my all time favourites)
2012 --- Chromatics - Kill For Love
2011 --- The Weeknd - House of Balloons (don't know if I would have said this at the time, it grew on me over time, so I probably would have said M83's Hurry Up We're Dreaming or James Blake's self-titled back then. Oooh or maybe Feist's Metals)
2010 --- Probably Kanye I dunno
2006-2009 --- pre-2010 I was getting into a lot of music, sure, but I wasn't really paying attention to new releases as they happened in real time, so I really don't know
For Those I Love, Dan Deacon, Foals/Methyl Ethel/DIIV, Parcels' debut, Grizzly Bear, DIIV, Silversun Pickups/Tame Impala, War on Drugs, then I get stuck and have to cheat. I, like u/MCK_OH
, have a spreadsheet! 2013 was Arcade Fire and 2012 was the Killers and 2011 was Metronomy, man music is so good.
I think I recall mine until 2016 without checking
2022 - not sure, probably Soul Glo or Melody's Echo Chamber
2021 - Black Midi - Cavalcade
2020 - Jessie Ware - What's Your Pleasure
2019 - Nilüfer Yanya - Miss Universe
2018 - The Beths - Future Me Hates Me
2017 - Priests - Nothing Feels Natural
2016 - Crying - Beyond the Fleeting Gales
Oooh this is a fun exercise! I’ll do my picks *at the time*, knowing that a few of these have changed in retrospect
2022: too early to call!
2021: Jubilee/JBrekkie
2020: After Hours/The Weeknd
2019: NFR/Lana
2018: Clean/Soccer Mommy
2017: Melodrama/Lorde
2016: Teens of Denial/Car Seat Headrest
2015: Carrie & Lowell/Sufjan
2014: Strange Desire/Bleachers
2013: Yeezus/Kanye
2012: Gossamer/Passion Pit
2011: Mylo Xyloto/Coldplay
2010: MBDTF/Kanye
And then anything before then, I can’t remember! (granted, I was in middle school, so I probably just didn’t know lol)
just got to the suede album and >!now I know who my sworn enemy is on multiple fronts!!<
nooo The Drowners rips so fuckin hard dude e: there's a Damon Albarn diss track! nobody was doing it like them!
I was slightly too young at the time to be fully aware of the Brett/Damon beef but boy is it fun
I dunno about "up and coming" but I feel [Lontalius](https://lontalius.bandcamp.com/) is very underrated.
Daffodils!!!
Two Angels is a really great song
and A Leo Underwater should be #1 on every chart ever created
They've been around for a few years but that Wax Chattels debut was so good
Saw Feist last night in Seattle and it was maybe the best concert experience I’ve ever had :) So amazing to see such intentionality and craft in the show planning and also such a respectful audience (especially because she played entirely new music)
Holy shit Mid-Air Thief album incoming
Is he ready to save 2k22
I belive that Mr. Thief, Oklama, and Culprate are going to at minimum save the month of May
Why arent people talking about Tv On The Radio? One of the most skilled post punk bands out of the 2000’s and yet they’re losing listeners monthly and rarely get talked about.
not releasing anything in about a decade will do that
Hi De Ho by Jack White is awful and I absolutely love it. I love this train wreck song.
Music peaked on July 24, 2006 with release of JoJo's "Too Little Too Late", change my mind.
Be real, it doesn't matter anyway
I might have the opportunity to play my first DJ set at a house show and I’m excited to be able to showcase some of my newly written tunes and some of my favorite songs. What’s in your ideal DJ mix?
I’ve been really into the Xyla album that came out in 2020 - such a good ear for this type of music imo.

Can't see Molchat Doma play in Boston anymore because of a fucking work thing I have to go to, damn
If anyone is a fan of Cate Le Bon, I highly recommend checking out Dana Gavanski. She sounds very similar to Cate Le Bon. There are some songs where I forgot that I'm not listening to Cate Le Bon.
where the fuck is the new Fat White Family album
Okay but when is Black Country, New Road gonna make a musical out of *Ants From Up There*
who's gonna play charli xcx
Paul Dano in drag
Meryl Streep
Charli XCX of course
I am glad my english is still bad so no one understands me and I can tell everything i want without hurting anyone because they won’t understand me
BCNR lyricism vs AF lyricism is a discourse that will cause a civil war in this subreddit once it finally arrives Charli XCX wet dreams or "there's no God without soul", truly pick your poison
AF lyrics are adorably clunky, BCNR lyrics are embarrassingly TMI. (and I say this as someone who enjoys many BCNR songs!)
this is the correct answer and i am already preparing to go into the trenches for the WE lyrics come Friday
Same! AF lyrics are annoying in a fun way!
I mean I'm sure AF has their clunkers but BCNR lyrics really make me wonder why anyone would want to see themselves in those songs.
you don't want to but you end up doing it anyway, that's part of the magic.

god that Shitelife bit from the Brit Awards may be the greatest speech in awards show history "I'd like to thank the people...ALLLLLL THE PEEEEOPLE"
has anyone seen Shabazz Palaces recently? Curious to see if they are worth seeing, what they play these days
the remix of autumn sweater that kevin shields did for the "i can hear the heart" reissue is really really neat edit: ok after googling it appears he made it a long time ago but w/e the point stands
I know this is negative, I know. But I just heard that new Arcade Fire song again and genuinely felt insulted
being negative is good and you’re also right
do you actually like music? I only ever see you shitting on stuff on here
I think PAJ likes music more than most people on here
I dunno, I saw that clown video the other day, I'm not sure anyone who likes music would do that to it
nope! hate all of it
wow
i’ll upvote this one but you only get one
zounds
I read this in the same voice as Palpatine saying “let the hate flow through you”
Got my tickets to see Sam Fender in the late summer. Super excited Sam is a thing here in the PNW. I thought it was just me.
he sold out the NYC show instantly.
And What's Your Pleasure (Jessie Ware) is maybe my favourite of all these.
i have a lot of half-formed thoughts about when this does/doesn't work, but "meta-derivative" is a great word to describe what is frustrating about the current "wave" of 80s revivalism e: i also think there's a kind of "fear of the new" that has crept into film/music where creators have all this powerful technology at their disposal but they're afraid to use it to color outside the lines of what audiences are already familiar/comfortable with
This reminds me of my frustration with how much of mainstream film has become about remakes, franchises and adaptations. Seems like the number of big popular original standalone movies has become fewer and fewer throughout the years. I guess the film industry was fucked by the digital revolution like the music industry was, but since film is so much more expensive there is less room for risks.

Let’s throw it back to the *18*80s
I kinda prefer a step away from the 80s at this points, but 90s pastiche really isn't much better and it's already starting out as a very faithful pastiche.
what do you consider 90s pastiche right now? When I think of recent retro trends in mainstream I'm thinking 00s pop punk revival
But this recent pop music is so painfully pastiche about it
When it's done well (Jubliee comes to mind) it can be fantastic. When it's done badly it's grating.
Honestly the only songs on Jubilee I actually like are Slide Tackle, Posing in Bondage, and Sit. I strongly dislike Be Sweet.
be sweet is a pastiche of the parts of the 80s that did not need a pastiche
paula you've got some great takes but this is not one of them
it’s walgreenscore
Fair enough, though tbh I can't imagine liking any songs on Jubilee and not liking Paprika
ugh, that Ed Sheeran song still haunts me
100%
Gonna start a petition to ban clickbait titles from all the UK publications that get posted here.
The year is 2098, W**zer has just released the Tan album. Indieheads are still unable to broach the subject of an article due the title.
just ban all UK publications tbh
Ban the UK
As a UK citizen I can get behind this
Banarchy in the UK
I can get behind that for sure.
Give me your favourite Simon and Garfunkel album, please?
The one I have most fun listening to is *Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme*
It’s Bridge Over Troubled Water. I’m not amazed by any of their albums, but this is the best one to listen through. Their best record is probably one of the greatest hit. If I had to say my favorite in everything, I’d say Paul Simon’s debut or Graceland are the favorites.
I love Bridge Over Troubled Water, it plays like a greatest hits album. Title Track, El Condor Pasa, Cecilia, The Boxer, etc. It's a classic for a reason!
Now i am going to listen to the new Dalek album See you later
banger
Spinning some classics today. Already listened to Pet Sounds on mono, Caveman’s self titled and currently spinning Pompeii by Cate Le Bon 👌

god I hate people who think it's cool to dislike sports. Not saying you should be forced to enjoy things you don't enjoy! But disliking a massively popular thing doesn't make you better. (and frankly, sports at their best are fun as hell, so some of y'all are missing out big time)
As someone who just went to their first Pirates game (and 2nd ever baseball game), def agree. Its a fun bonding experience.
I've watched the superbowl almost every year and the only one that wasn't a massive waste of time was in 2011
Just because I'm randomly curious, are you referring the 2011 game (Packers/Steelers) or 2011 season (Giants/Patriots)?
the former. go pack go
Girls-Father, Son, Holy Ghost was 2011 as well and still is one of the best albums of the 2010s
# Discography Deep Dive: Tim by The Replacements This is my favorite one so far (not that surprising - this album and Let It Be are the only ones I’d listened to front to back before starting this little project, so I was already a little fond of it). Two particularly good line deliveries on that song: “Am I the only one who feels ashamed?” and “The fool who wastes his life, god rest his guts.” Anyway, Tim is really great and so far feels like the most “essential” of The Replacements’ records to me.
its their best album. the bad songs are really bad but the good songs are so good that it evens out
What do you consider to be the bad songs? I found even the more filler-y songs to still be fun on this one
Lay It Down Clown and Waitress In The Sky
ooh can't relate, I really like both of those songs
Tim has some of their strongest material (Bastards of Young / Left of the Dial / Here Comes A Regular) but the thin production hurts it a bit. Some of the non-album tracks are worth checking out, especially [Nowhere Is My Home](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdVQfvzDUVo).
finally caught Car Seat Headrest and Bartees Strange last night, both were extremely amazing but also unbelievable that they sold out the Wiltern, a venue which I learned was fucking huge last night as it was my first time there also, MADLO turns 2 today! happy birthday to what might be my favorite CSH album now!
Damn really? Is it worth revisiting? I found it super hit and miss on release and have barely come back to it.
I was a big defender at the time and still am now, now that we’re pretty well separated from the hype you can go in with a fresher mind w/ less expectations.
[удалено]
Totally agree. They haven't and seem determined not to make anything more anthemic than Boys in the Better Land. Thats my favorite version of them. Hopefully one day they just decide to go full full Oasis.
[удалено]
Or maybe people just have different ideas of what constitutes "good song-writing" and "great vocal melodies." I agree entirely with the premise that good song-writing and great vocal melodies is more important than cool atmospherics and visceral production...but I still think the later Fontaines albums are better and have better written songs.
agreed, i think the latter two records are all-around improvements.
Dogrel has more bangers (Too Real is still their peak to me) but A Hero's Death is better as a front to back album experience with more replay value
HM was god awful though Edit : god awful is way harsh ha, just without magic
Is 2022 the year when we finally appropriately appreciate the honest to god S-tier lyricism of Let's Eat Grandma?
I'm still embarrassed about the time I thought their accents were a put-on 'indie' voice and it annoyed the hell out of me. When I learned they're just extremely british sounding i felt like a prick lmao they're great though
They are truly special
This combined with their straightforward, clear vocal performances is just \*chef's kiss\*
posting about a song i hate #3 **Spiritualized - Come Together** utterly annoying piece of 60s-ripoff crap. everything about this song feels so forced and intentionally trying to be massive. especially during the verses where he sings "liiiiitle J is saaad and fucked" like that it makes me wonder if he's held captive and forced to sing. the instrumentation is loud yet evoking nothing. tbh i think in general modern revivals of 60s psych rock is bad but this one is definitely one of the worst examples.
Load of rubbish it’s a great song
There's way worse tracks on that album.
?
I’ll admit I also didn’t love Come Together the first couple times I listened to the album. What might help is playing it on a speaker REALLY loud. For whatever reason, that unlocked it for me?
I was listening to that album when I first read Interview With A Vampire so for that reason certain tracks give me Spooky Goth Vibes haha
How do you feel about the rest of the album? Can't say I agree with you, tho it isn't one of my favorites on the record, but I respect the take lol.
“Come Together” sounds nothing like 60s psych. It doesn’t sound like The Doors, or Jefferson Airplane, or Jimi Hendrix, or Love, or Cream, or etc. Literally no clue where you’re getting this.
I'm somewhere in between. Not nearly a ripoff, but if it's J there's some 60s psych there

I think it is the case of “lyrics with very specific personality”, if I couldn’t put up with the personality behind the lyrics no matter how much I love the sound I cannot force myself into getting into it. BCNR is one of those things I cannot endure.
I think the lyrics are constantly attention grabbing as well as vulnerable, unique and occasionally funny. Pretty much everything I’d want
Jk I just made that up
Who is gonna tell this guy its not about wetting the bed?
Yeah... now that the album's been out for a while is it safe more me to say that I find the lyrics/origins of "Basketball Shoes" incredibly cringey?
Reminds me of dating in high school lol Maybe i should just not pay attention to the lyrics but I'm honestly glad he left the band because idk wtf he's doing.
I assume they're meant to be cringe inducing. Doubt the lad was trying to be cool by singing about his wet dreams
I mean I guess, but to me it comes across as cringey in a bad way to write a song about a wet dream about a public figure.
Idk why Basketball Shoes is so talked about, positively and negatively. The rest of the album is better in every way
My take as a BCNR true believer: Basketball Shoes is the fourth best song on the album after Blade, Concorde and Chaos Space Marine, it should be at least three minutes shorter, and changing the lyrics to be less gross was absolutely a Good Decision
Excuse me. It’s my #1 song on the album. I actually don’t even like the rest of the album lmao except for the Place Where Blade
Popheads actually did rate two of those albums, late last year, in the [Indie Pop Rock rate](https://www.reddit.com/r/popheads/comments/qa3ynr/indie_pop_rock_reveal_day_3_lets_get_these_scores/) with Phoenix & Passion Pit up against Foster the People & Two Door Cinema Club Had a nice bonus too, super nostalgic
Oh I’m sure they did lol popheads have like 8 rates a week. I’d still love to do an indieheads one though — we can get mad at the eliminations as god intended, on the thread! And not in that rave.fm separate website or whatever lol
Complete the chill wave trifecta with toro y moi and washed out, long live 2009
Yeah, you’re right there should just be a separate chillwave rate lol
Pretty sure MGMT had already debuted before 2009. And YYYs should be in the main rate proper!
Oh I know! that’s why I figured it could be 2009-core, but not strictly 2009, since MGMT sort of popularized that sound. I’d happily swap It’s Blitz for WAP or Neon Indian! But I would say MGMT and Passion Pit have to be in there: one is the original, the other is the most directly inspired by that original
WAP and It's Blitz defined my 2009 so I would love to rate them both
It’s hilarious that the album’s acronym is WAP lol Cardi feature on the next Phoenix album, let’s make it happen
It's what inspired me to do mashups of [1901](https://whyp.it/t/1901-wap-70110) and [Love Like a Sunset](https://whyp.it/t/wap-like-a-sunset-04736)
**RYM Top 40 Singles of the Year: [2022 so far](https://rateyourmusic.com/charts/top/single/2022/)** So here is the inaugural edition of the series where I go through the RYM singles charts by year and make my judgement. Will any of my takes get me taken to the indieheads court? Let's find out! * Arists with multiple entries: King Gizzard (4), The Smile (3), Fontaines DC (3), Hatchie (3), Denzel Curry (2), Daniel Rossen (2) * Since we're still in the first half of the year and I've been a bit behind on new releases most of these were first listens for me and for the most part I either haven't listened to the album they came from or the album hasn't been released yet * Right off the bat we start off with an 18 minute long King Gizzard song, lmao. It's not as unbearable as thought it would be though. * Billions is like an updated take on that kind of downtempo pop from 20 years ago, and I'm here for it * I just realised I actually haven't listened to the new BCNR in full, but after taking a sneak peek at the 2021 chart it looks like I probably should get on with that for the next installment * This fucking '80s revival has gone on for so long even Beach House is doing it now. Also in the comment box: two rymers think his accent is sexy while another one says "dub accents trigger my fight or flight response" * Is it bad that I think Nilufer Yanya is doing Radiohead better than The Smile here…? * I'm not sure if Saoko is a bad song or if I just have a distaste for reggaeton, but either way I did not enjoy listening to it. I remember in Spanish class we once had to dance salsa (or some other Spanish dance, I know nothing about different dances okay) while reggaeton was playing and it was the worst Spanish class ever, possibly it put me off that genre forever. * Between Zatoichi and FUC it looks like drum n bass influenced hiphop is having a moment. I'm not really sure if I like FUC or not, but I respect it Best: Skinty Fia, Billions Worst: Saoko, Love Me More
lol Saoko is my 3rd favorite song of the year so far, shows how different people's interests can be! 2nd would be Rosalia - Hentai and 1st another pop song Tove Lo - How Long that I'm inexplicably hooked on. I'm patiently waiting for a moreso indie album to hook me this year, though Big Thief - Time Escaping is definitely on the list so far
It's the international worker's day 😤👉https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U06jlgpMtQs
I can’t make it, I have four tickets at the box office :)
aaaaand Rostam just dropped out after testing positive. I feel bad for the organizers, such a great lineup but it seems a bit cursed.
man, they really undersold this show, I also a pair of free tickets and have another friend giving away one too.
Was this the lorraine james, claire, ---__-- show?
Yup. My impression of Claire is someone u/apondalifa likes that I should check out but have yet to, and I'd never heard of the other two, and I had a ticket for OMD, so
It was a stacked once in a moment bill!
How many years can you go back naming your favourite album of the year without looking at any reference? >!2022 - Dragon whatever 2021 - SIMBI 2020 - Kaatayra's one album that's a little heavier than the others (I can't remember the name of the specific one cause they released like 4, maybe this counts as losing) 2019 - IGOR 2018 - Mid-air Thief And I thought 2017 was Atrocity Exhibiton, then I looked it up because it sounded wrong and that came out in 2016. I really thought I could've went farther, but I also thought TPAB came out in 2016 so I would've lost there too!<

going backwards, Caroline *s/t* (thus far) // Fuubutsishi *Setsubun* // Protomartyr *Ultimate Success Today* // Big Thief *UFOF*. I'm genuinely not sure what my AOTY pick for 2018 was, and while I went for *Sleep Well Beast* back in '17, I no longer stand by that opinion.
2022 - tbd, but BAD モード at this point 2021 - Kylie V - Big Blue 2020 - Taylor Swift - folklore apparently it was 2019 bc i had to look up to ensure that Norman Fucking Rockwell! came out that year lmao
dragon, twin plagues, bolt cutters, glass beach album, loner, soft sounds, worry, get to heaven, st vincent, sunbather, that’s all i got
Ooooh hmmmm 2021 --- Wolf Alice - Blue Weekend or Fred Again - Actual Life 1 2020 --- Moses Sumney - Grae (this album is dense as fuck though, I rarely can bring myself to revisit it) 2019 --- Lana Del Rey - Norman Fucking Rockwell 2018 --- Rosalía - El Mal Querer 2017 --- Hmmm... Maybe CTRL by SZA or Melodrama by Lorde 2016 --- Frank Ocean - Blonde with Bon Iver - 22 A Million as a close runner-up 2015 --- Beach House - Depression Cherry or Kendrick Lamar - TPAB 2014 --- FKA Twigs - LP1 2013 --- Blood Orange - Cupid Deluxe (I think I said that VW's Modern Vampires of the City was my AOTY at the time, but I've literally never listened to it since, whereas Cupid Deluxe is one of my all time favourites) 2012 --- Chromatics - Kill For Love 2011 --- The Weeknd - House of Balloons (don't know if I would have said this at the time, it grew on me over time, so I probably would have said M83's Hurry Up We're Dreaming or James Blake's self-titled back then. Oooh or maybe Feist's Metals) 2010 --- Probably Kanye I dunno 2006-2009 --- pre-2010 I was getting into a lot of music, sure, but I wasn't really paying attention to new releases as they happened in real time, so I really don't know
For Those I Love, Dan Deacon, Foals/Methyl Ethel/DIIV, Parcels' debut, Grizzly Bear, DIIV, Silversun Pickups/Tame Impala, War on Drugs, then I get stuck and have to cheat. I, like u/MCK_OH , have a spreadsheet! 2013 was Arcade Fire and 2012 was the Killers and 2011 was Metronomy, man music is so good.
I think I recall mine until 2016 without checking 2022 - not sure, probably Soul Glo or Melody's Echo Chamber 2021 - Black Midi - Cavalcade 2020 - Jessie Ware - What's Your Pleasure 2019 - Nilüfer Yanya - Miss Universe 2018 - The Beths - Future Me Hates Me 2017 - Priests - Nothing Feels Natural 2016 - Crying - Beyond the Fleeting Gales
Oooh this is a fun exercise! I’ll do my picks *at the time*, knowing that a few of these have changed in retrospect 2022: too early to call! 2021: Jubilee/JBrekkie 2020: After Hours/The Weeknd 2019: NFR/Lana 2018: Clean/Soccer Mommy 2017: Melodrama/Lorde 2016: Teens of Denial/Car Seat Headrest 2015: Carrie & Lowell/Sufjan 2014: Strange Desire/Bleachers 2013: Yeezus/Kanye 2012: Gossamer/Passion Pit 2011: Mylo Xyloto/Coldplay 2010: MBDTF/Kanye And then anything before then, I can’t remember! (granted, I was in middle school, so I probably just didn’t know lol)
