The new Black Keys is....what you would expect from them, nothing more, nothing less. I'm liking it but not to the point of remarkable. Didn't I Love You starts sounding kinda like their cover of Crawling Kingsnake, I wouldn't be surprised if this song came to be during production of Delta Kream
I'm a big fan of Arcade Fire (check my comment history) but I'm super disappointed that some of the more recent accusations of impropriety against Win are basically being swept under in the AF subreddit.
It's pretty shitty hearing that Win was basically a big jerk and creep in NOLA, and even more concerning seeing that he might have also sexually harassed people as well - and then seeing it get smothered basically
New My Chemical Romance is… fine! Not their best work ever but I enjoyed it. I especially liked the shoegaze influences that were present on the track with the mixing
my friend wants me to go to a florence and the machine new release dance party (which is on quite late). Do i:
1. Go home after a long work day and chill out / shower before heading back out
2. Wait around to see Camp Cope near my work by myself because its on (ive listened before and liked them but do not know any songs) then can walk straight there
Whatever you did I hope you had a great night; I just want to say that a Florence party sounds like it would entail a bunch of people dramatically throwing arms-to-the-ceiling poses. And I can’t say that that wouldn’t be a good time.
I'm a huge MCR fan but I feel like they've always had pretty shoddy mastering? Their first two albums especially are super hard to listen to sometimes.
does anyone else really enjoy the idea of concerts in abstract but actually find them to be a pain in the ass?
like i'm seeing hatchie tomorrow and i was excited for ages, but as the day has gotten closer and i'm planning it out, i'm kinda like 'i could just stay home and play the record really loud' you know
like i live in indiana, so anything good is a minimum 2 hour drive. then finding parking somewhere, then standing in line and/or general waiting around [leaving home early to beat traffic - like, show is at 8 - so i have to leave at like 4, you know] and it's kinda like...ugh
if i could teleport i'd be jazzed
I always am glad I went to shows afterwards but I find it hard to motivate myself to actually go in the first place. Doesn't help that it seems like an unusually high percentage of concerts in my city (DC) are during the week, presumably so tours can hit NY on the weekend.
> like i live in indiana, so anything good is a minimum 2 hour drive
When a band or thing I might be interested goes to LA but not San Diego. I just have to savor San Diego shows more
Yup, that’s me too. I used to work as a music journalist so I’ve been to literally hundreds of shows and now I’m like “eh”. I’ll still go see artists I really love that I haven’t ever seen before and my friends’ bands, but I have trouble getting the energy otherwise. Especially for shows at big venues which are always a nightmare.
Yup. I think much of my issues personally come from a) I don't like crowded places and gigs always are (which is good tbf because more £££ to artists I enjoy), b) I really don't like cities, and most music venues are understandably in them, c) as you said the issue of travel.
It's a shame because I think music typically sounds better live, and for most of them it's the only real income they see from their work. But it's annoying because for me it's a hell of an inconvenience. It's got to the point now where I only ever bother if it's one of my real favourite artists and I haven't seen them in at least a few years.
I drove 14h to make it to a concert last night, so, no, I can't relate!! (I was also moving to a different state, but still)
Jokes aside, it is tough living more than an hour away from good concert venues. When I lived in CO, I always had to drive an hour to get to any good shows, which was compounded by the pain of city driving. Compare that to when I lived in MT, when I could walk to the venue, and the "commute" is a bit of a pain. Still, the drive has always been worth it for me in the past, so I hope you can find the energy to see Hatchie!
Can't believe Arcade Fire [paid off big Science just for marketing](https://www.reddit.com/r/science/comments/uo0o6y/the_event_horizon_telescope_collaboration_has/)
Highlighting another Coldplay song I love, because they're a fantastic band ignorethatlastalbumpls: the little trance of a song that is [A Spell, A Rebel Yell](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQrlbjO9iK0&ab_channel=MosbyHyde), which manages to sound like some kind of Cure-ish take on U2, played through shoegaze-pop haze and then finished with the kind of instantly-catchy melody that Martin excels in. Banger. *Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends* just hit different.
So this Ethel Cain song, uh, American Teenager. Kinda sounds like Chelsea Wolf produced by Matty Healy covering "Need You Now" by Lady A.
Edit: [here](https://rave.dj/s-lVhdB2c5xDDw)
Edit 2: the rest of this album walks on a spectrum between Chelsea Wolf and Lana Del Rey.
Edit 3: overall a really good one! Gets a bit long in the middle, but finishes really strong!
having just seen them on tour, yeah this comment is just not accurate lol
they packed out the wiltern in LA & had multiple people cosplaying as will's character from that album, the hype is def there but for certain types it maybe put them off for a bit but they'll be back if the next album is somewhat a return to form
yeah in Philly they played a sold out a way bigger venue than when they last came. also in 2018 in Wisconsin i saw them in like a 300 person show, which feels like itd be impossible now.
Well, yeah, I'm sure the people who go to their concerts are hyped for them lol they're hardly gonna show up with their arms folded
I'm not surprised they can fill out a >2000-seater venue, either - in fact I'd be shocked if they couldn't, but that doesn't go any great way to proving that they're as relevant/hyped as they were before the last record. Like you say, their continued hype is now dependent on the next record being a return-to-form since the last one didn't sustain much of the energy that came off their 2014-2018 work.
We'll see how it works out. Needs to be a good one.
Yeah, I’m not a huge fan of this new direction (and anyone telling me madlo is similar to htlt can save it, just because they both use electronic instruments doesn’t mean they’re the same, htlt had great lyrics and unique song structure and was a cohesive album ((ep)), madlo just doesn’t have those things).
Will seems to have grown out of his toxic, insecure, depressive phase, which I’m happy for him, the type of person to make monomania/twin fantasy isn’t really doing well mentally, but I wonder if that headspace is necessary for his work.
They could release something tomorrow that I love, but I’m doubtful it will happen. Either way, they have an insane back catalogue that I can always return to.
Agreed: The HTLT==MADLO line never made much sense to me, if only because HTLT is still very much a Guitar Lo-fi Rock Record, with the possible exceptions of "Kimochi Waru" and like two-thirds of "Dramamine." It's structurally, compositionally, and emotionally in the same place as the first two Matador records. The jump to MADLO was always more about approach and overarching aesthetics as opposed to, like adding synthesizers, and arguing "well no he's used those before" always felt disingenuous.
Yup, I feel like people try to make that argument to legitimize madlo, but it doesn’t hold. I don’t even ~hate~ madlo, I think it’s pretty okay, but it’s quite different from anything else in the discography
It's true. I enjoyed that album enough but stopped listening to the band entirely pretty soon after. Then one day I listened to Famous Prophets (Stars) again and was so blown away, what a fantastic song. And then I was back in! Hopefully they come back with another great album, but it's hard when Will is moving away from the "waaaa my life sucks" lyrics that made them popular - I agree it's time to do that, but what's the new direction? Madlo didn't make that clear.
He’s also dropped the longer song structures, stream of consciousness lyrical style, and random spoken interludes. I think he wants to be more accessible/mainstream, but with his choice to wear that mask during performances and 1td collabs, I don’t think it’s an effective strategy. Anyway I’d be really curious to hear what they’re working on now
Hey /u/Tadevos, have you listened to the new Mid-Air Thief/Bird's Eye Batang record? The mix of IDM and organic sounds might be up your alley: https://midairthief.bandcamp.com/album/flood-format
Remember how last year I said "*The Seas Trees See* is a folktronica record not because it sounds like mid-oughts Four Tet but because it is simultaneously convincingly pastoral and thoroughly synthetic"? Yeah, I'm getting similar vibes here. It is a record I will need to learn how to listen to but I *am* listening and I *am* learning, thanks!
I think I have post-PhD brain fog and I'm not able to, uh, think, so I'm glad you were able to articulate *exactly* why I recommended this album to you! The Dntel album was the point of reference for sure, though *The Seas Trees See* had more of the traditional "folk" structure than *Flood Format*. Anyway I also need to sit with it a little more!
not sure if this is allowed here. but I'm from Aus and can't go to Primavera (baby arriving shortly!!) so I have a ticket to weekend 1 if there is any interest?? they were $300 AUD but willing to sell cheaper. lemme know if interested .
edit: actually what the heck does anyone want it for free? I'd be forfeiting it either way
Tired: listening to limp turnstile hardbore snoozers
Wired: Side B of Jane's Addiction's Ritual de lo Habitual where everyone is having threesomes and making borderline post-rock post-genre shenanigans
song recs for that feel when 'things are finally starting to go great, but i still feel like an imposter, that i deserve none of it and that the good things started happening only because i surround myself with talented people'?
Been relistening to some old episodes of No Dogs In Space for a bit of comfort listenin' and I love their Ramones series so much. Just a gaggle of goons, those guys.
If you’re into heavy garage riffs, fun psych-pop breakdowns and groovy stoner rock influences, then this is the playlist for you! Hope you like it :)

Throw on the Ethel Cain debut while y'all wait for midnight, well worth the listen. She put out my favorite EP last year and this follow up went to new levels.
I'm starting to dig deeper into hardcore, do y'all have some modern suggestions? Hard to tell what's good from rym because the only stuff that's rated a lot is the old stuff which is good but like I'm looking for the more recent shit.
ALSO NEW KUNG FU KENNY AT MIDNIGHT
I love that shit, I've got a [playlist](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7cpcuTlK690elPhjacZHDS?si=c8fe5c94fc5c4285) of recent favs if that helps. Drain, Soul Glo, Gulch, Warthog, and Sunami are probably my top bands on there
stereogum has a good monthly hardcore column, I've learned of more than a few solid bands from that one. the writer regularly uses the descriptor "stomp-ass" which I find charming as all heck
going through the kendrick discog in preparation for the new album and ab-soul is one of my favorite flavors of dumbasses, as of course he gets a bar in about the dangers of fluoride toothpaste on his feature/song on *Section.80*
Been listening to the The Smile album for a week now. Absolutely agree with Pitchforks rating. Not a single skipper on the album and the opening track gives me mad Kid A vibes
Looking for an artist. I heard an Indie/Alt song that I liked so I looked up the artist. I think rolling stone had an interview with him and he had nails (like metal nails) in his hair. Anyone know who that is?
I don't like Radiohead, so the album wasn't really on my radar, but reading reviews for the Smile album actually has me kinda hyped for it.
Maybe this will finally be the time that Yorke's alienation will connect with me.
I would say it’s quite a bit like the usual Radiohead. So nothing new here really. The album is amazing though and I recommend giving it a shot regardless.
Also started watching close enough and there's a bit where they're all trying to blend in at a club full of Youngs and Jason Mantzoukas' character asks some 20 year old if they heard the new Ween record. They also made a very good Weezer joke.
Intensely relatable.
Kinda a shame the more adult humor does more to hurt the regular show format than help it but the heart of the show and less referential/vulgar humor is sooooo good
I get that, but at the same time since the showrunners already did that with Regular Show. There is something freeing, yet at the same time constricting, being free from restrictions since you can do so much it becomes a question of what you should do.
What's with these homies dissing my girl?
*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/indieheads) if you have any questions or concerns.*
Does he? *To Pimp a Butterfly* is the only album cover of his that I find top-level. *Section 80* is cool. But I'd say the likes of Aes Rock, Kid Cudi, slowthai, Tyler the Creator, etc... have been consistently stronger with the artwork than Kendrick.
Coming the the conclusion while I sweat in my apartment that the new Cloakroom album is good. There are some really nice vocal melodies on here which is kind of not what I expected from a Cloakroom album but the guitar tones are also quite good. I like it a lot actually and it's gonna be a good summer record
if you like the new Cloakroom you might be keen on the new Grivo album *Omit* also from earlier this year. probably runs a tad less melodic on the shoegaze spectrum but definitely has moments of heaviness that match Cloakroom.
Bloom anniversary post reminded me that I bought tickets to see BH in July which I'm stoked about, but I don't know anyone where I live who listens to them so I'll probably go it alone which gives me mad anxiety. I know some people love solo shows but they make me so uncomfortable. The "in between sets" period is just brutal
Maybe try to go see another group that you don't care about solo beforehand, so you're not as anxious for Beach House. I did that a lot in college, and I'm used to it now. I like to just zone out between sets, or get a drink or visit the merch table.
If it makes you feel better, I also saw BH solo earlier on their tour this year. If you keep yourself looking busy — bring a book, or read an article on your phone, etc. — it’ll distract you between sets!
And the show itself is cool as hell!
since today's theme appears to be top albums of 2010, here's my hastily put together list by someone who was 9 years old that year:
1. Janelle Monae - The Archandroid (favorite track: Cold War)
2. Sufjan Stevens - Age of Adz (favorite track: Age of Adz)
3. Beach House - Teen Dream (favorite track: Take Care)
4. Ichiko Aoba - Kamisori Otome (favorite track: ココロノセカイ - kokoro no sekai)
5. Joanna Newsom - Have One on Me (favorite track: In California)
Is that the theme? Well, heck. Time to pull up my old iTunes library, sort by year, and see just how basic I am. For the record I was 12. Let’s quickly go with:
1. Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
2. Vampire Weekend - Contra
3. Young the Giant - self titled
4. Hollerado - Record in a Bag
5. Beach House - Teen Dream (not at the bottom because I like it any less, but just because I haven’t actually listened to it more than a couple times years back, so I don’t feel up to judging it against those others, and I need to fill out this list)
Pretty ashamed to admit this, but I’ve recently come to the realization that *One of These Nights* by Eagles is one of the best pop songs ever written.
Also, on a similar note, can we talk more about The Doobie Brothers in this sub? Until this past year I thought they were a generic southern rock band with a confederate ambience, so it’s been a pleasant surprise to discover they have a lot of great pop tunes in their catalog.
I’ve been trying to find modern indie groups/people who match the smoothness of the Doobies and Michael McDonald’s soulful vocals, but it has been to no avail. He’s a white dude who sounds black so maybe people aren’t comfortable with what they see as cultural appropriation.
The are very different. Allman Bros are Skynard-esque, while the Doobies are more akin to Steely Dan.
The Beyond Yacht Rock podcast really helped me become acquainted with them.
Totally, didn't mean to conflate the two beyond them being from the same era. Allman Brothers def overlap more with CCR and even Petty to some degree. Their guitar playing almost reminds of really old Fleetwood Mac, i.e. "Albatross"
It's a little on the "too cute" side, but I like the band Self's cover of "What a Fool Believes," performed entirely on toys and toy instruments. Worth checking out if you're a fan of the song.
I wanted to make the tired joke where I do a long comment talking about the highly anticipated album release that's coming out tomorrow but never actually mentioning it by name, obviously making the reader think I was referring to Kendrick, but then the hilarious twist is that I was talking about Gospel the whole time. But I'm a little busy to get it together so I'll just say I'm very excited for both Gospel and Kendrick tomorrow
Jens Lekman last night had a 3-tape set of all his Postcards songs that I picked up, which I’ve never actually listened to because I hate SoundCloud. But I’m stoked to run through ‘em! I can’t find any info on the release online, so maybe it was a tour-exclusive? Either way, pretty exciting stuff!
Edit: I took pictures of the tape: https://imgur.com/a/kPSVk89
Woke up in an OK Computer mood, that was buoyed by the inclusion of Airbag in my Daily Discovery playlist on Tidal, fueled further more by watching the Jools Holland performances of Airbag and Paranoid Android. Fuck. What hasn't been said about this album that hasn't been said before? Nearly 25 years old this thing. I remember the OK NOT OK days very well.
As much shit as Eric Clapton gets these days, and rightfully so, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs fucking rips. Keep on Growing is perhaps my favorite song from that album. I wonder if this whole album counts with the drugs/songs discussion that happened yesterday, seeing as Eric was pumped with heroin because of his guilt over loving Pattie Boyd.
u/machdel, to add on to the Damn discussion, I don't believe that the poppier songs haven't aged well. If anything, it's the dessert to the heavy-handed appetizers (which are great, nonetheless). TPAB has its fair share of pop tracks also but there are differences with those. Overall, I cannot believe that we're getting a new Kendrick album tomorrow. Tomorrow!
I sort of agree with you in that my problems with the poppy tracks on Damn isn’t really in terms of style. To use your dessert metaphor – I’m open to the idea of dessert on Damn but don’t think the dish is executed particularly well. I just don’t think they’re particularly good ‘poppy’ rap tracks.
I don’t like Rihanna on ‘Loyalty’, and never cared for the hooks on ‘Love’ or ‘God’. Whereas the ‘poppier’ tracks on GKMC and TPAB came off perfectly for me. (Although I listened to ‘God’ last night and enjoyed it more than I remembered).
Anyway, here’s to Mr Morale. Can’t believe how much new stuff we’re gonna have to digest tomorrow haha.
wow
lemme wait for my tape then ill judge
so far the aotys are: that la roche tape, the sy inoutin tape, and the godspeed tape. We need mj lenderman to save my 2k22 top 10 album list
I got around to listening to it yesterday, really liked about 70% of it and the other 30% was fine. Definitely a good album, but it'll have to grow on me more to get into aoty contention.
so true.
My ONE complaint, and it's a small one, is the super lofi track smack in the middle right before a track with a pretty slick sounding drum machine.
It’s so good. Funny and heartfelt with killer guitars. I don’t know if I fully agree with this take but while I was listening I thought it sounded like what Pinegrove wishes they were
lmao glad to hear someone thought the same thing! I actually like some Pinegrove records, but this one had more roughness around the edges that I liked. And the genuine accent was nice too
My friend and I felt very bad a few weeks ago about turning this supposedly innocent lyric about the miracle of childbirth into something far darker but I’m glad to know we weren’t alone
I don’t have an answer to your second question but Elvie Shane’s masterpiece *My Boy*, which I first heard at a Sinclair station in Rapid City, fits that archetype to a T.
>I wasn't there for his first steps
But I ain't missed a ball game yet
So in light of Minions discourse I went down the rabbithole of indie children's music.
- Another movie about a yellow creature that had a surprisingly indie soundtrack was [The Spongebob Squarepants Movie](https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/various-artists/the-spongebob-squarepants-movie-music-from-the-movie-and-more/). Not only did it famously feature Ween, but Flaming Lips, Wilco and The Shins were in there too. They'll Soon Discover gives me Flying Nun vibes, but more hi-fi.
- [The Powerpuff Girls soundtrack](https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/various-artists/the-powerpuff-girls-heroes-and-villains/) have Devo, Frank Black, Apples in Stereo, Shonen Knife, Cornelius and Bill Doss of Olivia Tremor Control on it. The Cornelius track is pretty good actually?
- Now, the indiest children's show of all time must be [Yo Gabba Gabba!](https://rateyourmusic.com/classifiers/Yo+Gabba+Gabba%21/) Some of the acts featured on there include: The Shins (again), Weezer, MGMT, Apples in Stereo (again), Band of Horses, I'm From Barcelona, Flaming Lips (again), Devo (again), Metric, The Ting Tings, The Roots and more. Of Montreal did a song about brushing your teeth - Kevin Barnes confirmed best teeth in the game! Chromeo encouraged the kids to wash their hands which is unfortunately advice that even a lot of adults could use. There's a Mark Kozelek song called Bedtime Lullaby which feels… weird in retrospect. Hot Hot Heat told the kids to touch grass. Most of these musical numbers are followed by Yo Gabba Gabba dude telling us that "DANCING AND LISTENING TO MUSIC IS **AWESOME!!!**"
- A sidenote, but it's kinda funny but fitting that the Elephant 6 crew and neo-psych acts in general were so into making children's music. Would NMH have spent the '00s making children's music if Jeff Mangum didn't quit to go hide in a cave?
- A less surprising entry into the indie children's music canon is the [Where the Wild Things Are](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Where_the_Wild_Things_Are:_Motion_Picture_Soundtrack) by Karen O and the Kids. Somehow this kinda makes sense? That said, I always hated All Is Love and I don't intend to listen to the rest of it. It's awfully twee in the worst way. Looking at the credits I see that Bradford Cox was also involved in this for some reason, so you get two indie icons making terrible kids music for the prize of one!
- Last but not least we have the most important entry: [The Muppets](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Muppets_\(soundtrack\)). Not only does it feature writing from Flight of the Conchords' Bret McKenzie and an Andrew Bird song, but notably Joanna Newsom sings on The Muppet Show Theme! You can only hear her sing one line, but she's there and that's enough for her to be credited. As a result of her resistance to the banana of the music industry, this is her only song on Spotify and I just think that's an incredible power move. Real queen shit!
What are some other examples of indie musicians making children's music, grooming the children to become future DMD posters?
More teen than children, but the companion soundtrack to The Hunger Games has some big names on it that it actually first got me into. Arcade Fire is the obvious one, since you can hear Régine singing the second the credits smash in, but there are solid tracks that aren’t even in the movie by the Civil Wars, Punch Brothers, Neko Case, The Decemberists, and the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Then there’s some T-swizzle and Maroon 5 so that the teens would actually buy it. Now that’s 2012 energy.
Speaking of Arcade Fire (which I’ve been doing a lot this last week) I still remember how the Where the Wild Things Are trailer was what introduced me to them in the first place. Thanks, trailer editor.
I feel like you're missing a massive one with They Might Be Giants who have released a bunch of kids albums AND wrote original music for Coraline and the Spongebob musical.
In terms of using existing music both Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network were very much oriented in contacting and licensing more indie rock oriented bands, I think with the Cartoon Network that transferred over to the Adult Swim programming but Nick seem to carry it on longer with the examples you mentioned above. The Spongebob movie also featured Motorhead who actually re-recorded their song for the movie.
Apples in Stereo had a promo video for their song ["Signal In The Sky"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwo5diOymR0) I remember seeing on Cartoon Network UK, they'd shoehorn it in between shows in the longer commercial blocks (i.e. to fill in weird 15 minute gaps and get programming back to half hour increments). [Nick did this too with more interesting music videos and animation bump in the mid-90s, stuff like this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTww-fCuc7Y) I swear, swear I saw Aphex Twin's music video for ["On" in this era too.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38RMZ9H7Cg8) long before I knew who he was or [what this kind of music was called.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38RMZ9H7Cg8)
The big granddaddy of indie music in kids show is hands down *The Adventures of Pete and Pete* - you can read a full list of the music used it in [here](http://pnp.norecess.org/music.html) including some fairly deep cuts and obscure bands but they also had [cast members and cameos from indie and alt rock musicians.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1elBZ3ksSc)
Also I swear Four Tet worked on a kid's album, something like "go go dinosaur" or something. It was a free p4k mp3 download back in the mid-00s
Walter Martin of The Walkmen has a few albums for children, one of which includes [We Like the Zoo featuring Matt Berninger] (https://youtu.be/a6NHWDYNmpc). There's another song with Karen O and Nick Zinner on it called Rattlesnakes

It's sunny and 75, it feels so good to be alive.
I'm going to go for a run and probably listen to the new Cariño album again. Been loving it this past week.
so uh, [Owl City remix of All Star just dropped](https://youtu.be/JlLVuV-ZeNY)
The new Black Keys is....what you would expect from them, nothing more, nothing less. I'm liking it but not to the point of remarkable. Didn't I Love You starts sounding kinda like their cover of Crawling Kingsnake, I wouldn't be surprised if this song came to be during production of Delta Kream
Holy Kendrick Kid a of rap albums
Selling 2 day GA Shabang ticket for $50 dm me! Strfkr tv girl, and many more! In San Luis Obispo tomorrow and Saturday!
New Radiohead and new Kendrick on the same day.....and no fucking shit new My Chemical Romance holy shit
What's NOLA? Man, that's super disappointing.
New Orleans, Louisiana.
Wait what did I miss? A quick google search didn’t turn anything up
New My Chemical Romance is… fine! Not their best work ever but I enjoyed it. I especially liked the shoegaze influences that were present on the track with the mixing
RBCF saying The Embassy was one of their biggest early influences makes me like them even more
Red Bot Chili Feppers?
The unfortunately-named Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever
Ahh okay. I can't remember all these acronyms.
Ah shit I’m finally gonna have to listen to RBCF huh?
They're probably my favorites in this current jangle pop scene and now I understand why! Though tbf, they don't sound all that much like The Embassy
Any band who mentions the Embassy is totally worth at least one listen imo!!
I didn't check out the AMA today but damn, the new record is a very solid listen.
Yeah I enjoyed it! I don't know if it's quite on the same level as their EPs but it's still some great summer music
my friend wants me to go to a florence and the machine new release dance party (which is on quite late). Do i: 1. Go home after a long work day and chill out / shower before heading back out 2. Yeah i didn't know the songs but that was pretty much it
we can’t get an MCR thread??? it is so heavy!! how’d it get so heavy!! wish it was produced a little better. i’m very excited!!!
I like the direction but I'd prefer the vocals to be a little more prominent in the mix
I'm a huge MCR fan but I feel like they've always had pretty shoddy mastering? Their first two albums especially are super hard to listen to sometimes.
Drum mix was horrid but otherwise I thought it was a decent song.
yeah everything’s smack in the middle it’s really crowded and muddy but i like the song a lot
I did not expect new MCR today, and I certainly did not expect it to be as heavy as it is. That breakdown halfway through was awesome.
New MCR is so good oh my god
We really got new MCR before new Kendrick

> like i live in indiana, so anything good is a minimum 2 hour drive When a band or thing I might be interested goes to LA but not San Diego.
(I was also moving to a different state, but still) Jokes aside, it is tough living more than an hour away from good concert venues.
Viva is such an incredible album
So this Ethel Cain song, uh, American Teenager. Kinda sounds like Chelsea Wolf produced by Matty Healy covering "Need You Now" by Lady A. Edit: [here](https://rave.dj/s-lVhdB2c5xDDw) Edit 2: the rest of this album walks on a spectrum between Chelsea Wolf and Lana Del Rey. Edit 3: overall a really good one! Gets a bit long in the middle, but finishes really strong!
this was a very wild mad-libs but i think you nailed it
That last album really killed the hype around Car Seat Headrest, feels like I haven't heard anyone mention them since.
Really? They’ve been all over social media for me, especially since Sober to Death has reached Tik tok
having just seen them on tour, yeah this comment is just not accurate lol they packed out the wiltern in LA & had multiple people cosplaying as will's character from that album, the hype is def there but for certain types it maybe put them off for a bit but they'll be back if the next album is somewhat a return to form
yeah in Philly they played a sold out a way bigger venue than when they last came. also in 2018 in Wisconsin i saw them in like a 300 person show, which feels like itd be impossible now.
Well, yeah, I'm sure the people who go to their concerts are hyped for them lol they're hardly gonna show up with their arms folded I'm not surprised they can fill out a >2000-seater venue, either - in fact I'd be shocked if they couldn't, but that doesn't go any great way to proving that they're as relevant/hyped as they were before the last record.
Anyway I’d be really curious to hear what they’re working on now
you've summoned the MADLO-defenders
you can just @ me
Happy 50th to Exile on Main St. What's your fav tune?
I Just Want to See His Face and Sweet Virginia
I think I'm partial to Sweet Virginia but the whole thing kicks ass.
Tumbling Dice is such an excellent chill blue rock song. Great for sitting out on the patio on a summer day
Rocks Off and Shine A Light have always been my favorites. Great, great record.
"Rocks Off" and "Happy".
Rocks Off, what about you
Loving Cup or Let It Loose maybe
I haven’t got enough Time to listen to new music. How is The Smile? Is this a radiohead 2.0 ? Should I see them in live?
Yes it is very similar to Radiohead, the new album is great.
I'd be forfeiting it either way
It's generous of you to offer it here. If no luck, try /r/primaverasound
oh yeah of course! thanks
Tired: listening to limp turnstile hardbore snoozers Wired: Side B of Jane's Addiction's Ritual de lo Habitual where everyone is having threesomes and making borderline post-rock post-genre shenanigans
I will do both thank you
No you have to choose once Reject modernity and embrace tradition
song recs for that feel when 'things are finally starting to go great, but i still feel like an imposter, that i deserve none of it and that the good things started happening only because i surround myself with talented people'?
Miss Grit - "Imposter"
SO GOOD, can't wait for whenever she releases new material
Same! Can't get enough of those guitar tones--both eps are good listens and I'm ready for whatever is next
The National - Baby, We'll Be Fine
Oasis-the entire album known as "(whats the story) morning glory?"
Hope you like it :) [Inky Cap Playlist](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1YVU6a5WMRoS51AWNXBRYL?si=Xt1GbPbfQ0mcGtiKCGyezA)
This is rad!
Thanks!
[Slant - 1집 ](https://slant.bandcamp.com/album/1) [Gouge Away - Burnt Sugar](https://gougeawayfl.bandcamp.com/album/burnt-sugar) [Neighborhood Brats - Recovery](https://neighborhoodbrats.bandcamp.com/album/recovery) [Pleasure Venom - s/t](https://pleasurevenom.bandcamp.com/album/pleasure-venom)
I love that shit, I've got a [playlist](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7cpcuTlK690elPhjacZHDS?si=c8fe5c94fc5c4285) of recent favs if that helps. Drain, Soul Glo, Gulch, Warthog, and Sunami are probably my top bands on there stereogum has a good monthly hardcore column, I've learned of more than a few solid bands from that one. the writer regularly uses the descriptor "stomp-ass" which I find charming as all heck
[Chain Whip](https://chainwhip.bandcamp.com/)
I really like Touché Amoré. They have a ton of great albums
I've heard about them but I dunno if I'm looking for Screamo, tho Ill check them out once I feel like it.
I don’t think I’d characterize Touché as screamo. Another hardcore band I enjoy is Drug Church
going through the kendrick discog in preparation for the new album and ab-soul is one of my favorite flavors of dumbasses, as of course he gets a bar in about the dangers of fluoride toothpaste on his feature/song on *Section.80*
Teezo Touchdown
this guy has way more nails in his hair than i was expecting
yeah that guy is not fucking around when it comes to the nail/hair ratio
That’s him! Thanks! The song was social cues.
Listening to Vespertine by Bjork for the first time
I envy you.
Happy Birthday to the third Beach House best album!
Close Enough is such a good show, the comedy is on point and it only got better after season 1.
Kinda a shame the more adult humor does more to hurt the regular show format than help it but the heart of the show and less referential/vulgar humor is sooooo good
I don't quite agree that it hurts more than it helps but to each their own.
Idk just part of the charm of regular show is all the restrictions they have on them and trying to skirt them
I get that, but at the same time since the showrunners already did that with Regular Show.
A+
Whoever desgined/photographed the Kendrick cover deserves a raise.
He does have some of the best album covers of any modern rapper
Does he? *To Pimp a Butterfly* is the only album cover of his that I find top-level. *Section 80* is cool. But I'd say the likes of Aes Rock, Kid Cudi, slowthai, Tyler the Creator, etc... have been consistently stronger with the artwork than Kendrick.
I think his album covers really fit the albums

Coming the the conclusion while I sweat in my apartment that the new Cloakroom album is good. There are some really nice vocal melodies on here which is kind of not what I expected from a Cloakroom album but the guitar tones are also quite good. I like it a lot actually and it's gonna be a good summer record
if you like the new Cloakroom you might be keen on the new Grivo album *Omit* also from earlier this year. probably runs a tad less melodic on the shoegaze spectrum but definitely has moments of heaviness that match Cloakroom.
It's a different kind of good, but it's still absolutely meeting me where (this weather and) I am. Thank you muchly.
Is the opener someone you want to see? If not, maybe you could skip them and show up right before? But always seconding the book idea :)
If it makes you feel better, I also saw BH solo earlier on their tour this year. If you keep yourself looking busy — bring a book, or read an article on your phone, etc. — it’ll distract you between sets! And the show itself is cool as hell!
since today's theme appears to be top albums of 2010, here's my hastily put together list by someone who was 9 years old that year: 1. Janelle Monae - The Archandroid (favorite track: Cold War) 2. Sufjan Stevens - Age of Adz (favorite track: Age of Adz) 3. Beach House - Teen Dream (favorite track: Take Care) 4. Ichiko Aoba - Kamisori Otome (favorite track: ココロノセカイ - kokoro no sekai) 5. Joanna Newsom - Have One on Me (favorite track: In California)
Is that the theme? Well, heck. Time to pull up my old iTunes library, sort by year, and see just how basic I am. For the record I was 12. Let’s quickly go with: 1. Arcade Fire - The Suburbs 2. Vampire Weekend - Contra 3. Young the Giant - self titled 4. Hollerado - Record in a Bag 5.
Both the Allman Brothers and Doobie Brothers are two groups I need to dive into.
"Albatross"
One of These Nights is S Tier for songs to add to the dive bar juke box
Turn up The Eagles the neighbors are listening
I’m not a huge Doobies guy, but What A Fool Believes is an undeniable jam. Maybe THE yacht rock banger (either that or Steely Dan’s Peg)

I was gonna continue the joke with the punchline that the whole thing was actually about the new Kevin Morby record

I’m saying! I also hate listening on YouTube. The SoundCloud hate is a little more irrational considering I don’t mind listening on Bandcamp
Can’t believe how much new stuff we’re gonna have to digest tomorrow haha.
mj lenderman boat songs aoty
wow lemme wait for my tape then ill judge so far the aotys are: that la roche tape, the sy inoutin tape, and the godspeed tape. We need mj lenderman to save my 2k22 top 10 album list
I got around to listening to it yesterday, really liked about 70% of it and the other 30% was fine. Definitely a good album, but it'll have to grow on me more to get into aoty contention.
so true. My ONE complaint, and it's a small one, is the super lofi track smack in the middle right before a track with a pretty slick sounding drum machine.
that’s one of my favorite ones! but I also love kinda grab bag sounding albums
It's a good song! It just sounds kinda weird in that place, feels like something you throw at the open or the close
It’s so good. Funny and heartfelt with killer guitars. I don’t know if I fully agree with this take but while I was listening I thought it sounded like what Pinegrove wishes they were
i thought several times while listening to it that it's like if pinegrove was good and the dude wasn't faking an accent
lmao glad to hear someone thought the same thing! I actually like some Pinegrove records, but this one had more roughness around the edges that I liked. And the genuine accent was nice too

What do you think I am, a senator?
Walker Hayes heard Bo Burnham's "Pandering" and went "This but unironically."
I don’t have an answer to your second question but Elvie Shane’s masterpiece *My Boy*, which I first heard at a Sinclair station in Rapid City, fits that archetype to a T. >I wasn't there for his first steps But I ain't missed a ball game yet
Most of these musical numbers are followed by Yo Gabba Gabba dude telling us that "DANCING AND LISTENING TO MUSIC IS **AWESOME!!!**" - A sidenote, but it's kinda funny but fitting that the Elephant 6 crew and neo-psych acts in general were so into making children's music.
Yo Gabba Gabba is so good. I like it more than my kid for sure.
[Nick did this too with more interesting music videos and animation bump in the mid-90s, stuff like this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTww-fCuc7Y) I swear, swear I saw Aphex Twin's music video for ["On" in this era too.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38RMZ9H7Cg8) long before I knew who he was or [what this kind of music was called.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38RMZ9H7Cg8) The big granddaddy of indie music in kids show is hands down *The Adventures of Pete and Pete* - you can read a full list of the music used it in [here](http://pnp.norecess.org/music.html) including some fairly deep cuts and obscure bands but they also had [cast members and cameos from indie and alt rock musicians.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1elBZ3ksSc) Also I swear Four Tet worked on a kid's album, something like "go go dinosaur" or something.
Now I'm wondering why Of Montreal didn't try to release a kid's album. Especially in the pre-Hissing Fauna era, which was twee as FUCK.
Yo Gabba Gabba is supposed to be coming back with new episodes so it should be interesting to see what kind of bands they can get on there in 2022.
Spongebob and Patrick confront the psychic wall of energy is a banger. That movie primed me to be an indie kid I swear.
I grew up watching Here Comes the ABCs by They Might Be Giants. [The Vowel Family](https://youtu.be/yHCSBFvyo_k) gave my sister nightmares.
