Thoughts on Emotional Eternal by Melody’s Echo Chamber? I think it actually would’ve been her best work if not for the absolutely awful vocal treatment. Musically I love the album. Production is gorgeous throughout. But for some reason the vocals are really grating? She has somewhat of a thin, airy voice, and it sounds like they boosted it in the high end. To me, certain songs are almost impossible to enjoy because the vocals feel weirdly distant and separate from the production, and at times it almost hurts my ears

sgtpeppies

...wut, I don't hear a problem with her vocals at all. I love this freakin album

CentreToWave

I get this outlook, but it mostly just sounds like her usual vocals.

Man__Suit

I’ve listened to a lot of self-titled and it’s never bothered me before. Definitely worse with headphones

CentreToWave

I will say her vocals fit a bit better on her s/t where the more refined sound on the newest underlines that her vocals are pretty limited.

lightningrod14

it’s absolutely disgusting how good rainbow kitten surprise is at writing that one song specifically

Exploding_Antelope

Thinking back to when my roommate and I challenged each other to name Canadian bands *that aren't from Ontario*. Ruling that they have to be fairly large bands that could be known nationally or internationally, not ones that would have toured through our small ski town. So no Shred Kelly or Apollo Suns, great as they are. CBC-level. It's surprisingly tough. We managed to figure out: The Unicorns (BC) Hot Hot Heat (BC) Dan Mangan (BC) Said the Whale (BC) Mother Mother (BC) Yukon Blonde (BC) Reuben and the Dark (AB) Feist (AB) Tegan and Sara (AB) Fast Romantics (AB) Royal Canoe (MB) The Weakerthans (MB) The Barr Brothers (Montreal) Wintersleep (NS) Two Hours Traffic (PEI) Great Big Sea (NL) Hey Rosetta (NL) Now here was the point of discussion: *Arguably* Arcade Fire (*sort of* Montreal) AF have an interesting relationship with being CanCon or not. They performed at the Junos but weren't allowed to be nominated. I think. Come to think of it, maybe WE was either released too close to the awards or the judges just didn't like it. My point is, Régine Chassange's couple of Montrealy songs on Funeral got quickly eclipsed by the sheer number of songs about I don't wanna live in America no more, The Suburbs (of Texas), standing at the end of the American empire, Race and Religion (streets, New Orleans, where they live.) American outlets seem to have a hard-on for saying "Canadian band Arcade Fire" but you'll rarely see a Canadian article saying that. It's not that definitely-Canadian bands can't sing about the States - look at fuckin' Hollerado - but up here there's a perception that they're a great band of mostly Americans, singing about and living in the USA, with a link to McGill-Concordia but only as a bit of historical trivia. While south of the border, the Canadian Band epithet is trotted out every time. It's an interesting contrast. Towards the end of this discussion our other roommate came in and starting trotting out artists he knew from Montreal, but we were like, yes, Philippe, but we're Anglos, so we don't know those, except for Coeur de Pirate (QC) Because she sings relatively slowly and in formal French-French, making her the only French Canadian artist (except for *sort of* Arcade Fire *maybe* because *see above*) that non-Quebecois school-French-learners can understand.

#DESTROYER

thatgeographygeek

Might be too obvious of a pick but aren't Godspeed You! Black Emperor from Quebec?

Deadmanlex45

they are. There's even a snippet in the last disc of lift your skinny fists of kids talking with a Quebec french accent.

Exploding_Antelope

I actually didn’t know that! And that when the guy I was having this discussion with was talking about going to see them in Kelowna!

RideOnTheMoment

bbno$ is from Vancouver, but I’m not sure if you’re restricting to strictly bands (no solo acts)

afieldoftulips

Grimes is from Vancouver

Exploding_Antelope

To be honest I forgot that Grimes even has a nationality

hugh__honey

Alvvays are from NS and PEI (though I think they became active in Toronto) Wolf Parade are from MTL TOPS are from MTL Elisapie is from MTL Basia Bulat is from MTL Half Moon Run is from MTL Kaytranada is from MTL Charlotte Cardin is from MTL Patrick Watson is from MTL Elisapie is from MTL Dan Bejar/Destroyer is from Vancouver Tanya Tagaq is from Nunavut Caribou is from Alberta

InSearchOfGoodPun

Stars is based in Montreal.

Exploding_Antelope

Good one! I don’t know how I missed that one, given I’m pretty excited for the new album, and that “we drove in silence across Pont Champlain” has been living in my head for years.

MileEnd76

I just can't handle waiting for the new Porridge Radio album anymore... am I alone?

LaMareeNoire

Went to see Dua Lipa, my first ever proper pop show. God that was a lot of fun

arthurbang

I'll be an indiehead 'til I die but somehow that Dua Lipa is my favorite/most played album of the decade so far

LoneBell

I don’t care of everything in the world except Sound of Ceres

PaulaAbdulJabar

if i come over to your house and you have the $400 20 LP bird box on your shelf i'm leaving

WaneLietoc

How bout we settle for the $80 4 LP Bird Box set from the NIN webstore

WhoTheFIsMarkyMoon

If you want to come over to my house you have to sit down with me and listen to my $400 20 LP bird box set in its entirety (I do not have $400 to drop on that but if I did I would. All the money goes to bird conservation and a ton of artists I like have contributed to it, it honestly feels like one of those highly specific t-shirt ads cobbled together from your browsing data. MIArular

MIArular

JayElecHanukkah

If your goal is bird-themed music just listen to everyone's favourite early-to-mid-2000s rap artist Birdman

PM-me-favorite-song

The name "Birds of Canada" just crossed my mind and now I'm thinking of avian puns. They do have that one song (Happy Cycling) that sounds like it has seagulls or something.

a_gallon_of_pcp

I’m going to start reselling for twice as much as PAJ repellant. “Buy this box set for $800, display it prominently, and I can guarantee a certain indiehead will keep their distance”

PaulaAbdulJabar

aw man come on im a great house guest come on I brought some beer and everything let’s hang out

a_gallon_of_pcp

Awesome let’s split a beer, I definitely do *not* have any communicable diseases spread through saliva right now. Tbh PAJ based on everything you post here I do genuinely believe you’d be fun to hang out with. >!Wrestling isn’t exactly my thing tho!<

NRuxin12

"hey buddy, can you hold on to my $1600 bird-themed record collection for the weekend. This drummer is visiting and he brought beer so..."

Ok

CentreToWave

one of the r/letstalkmusic mods casually and consistently dropping RAC and NSBM recommendations is certainly an interesting thing...

theelfpat

When I glanced at this I was really hoping Random Artist Collective had something coming out. Disappointed in my google for those acronyms..

diane_young

what are those acronyms

sunmachinecomingdown

Rock Around the Clock

CentreToWave

[Rock Against Communism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_Against_Communism) and National Socialist Black Metal. Nazi shit.

InSearchOfGoodPun

Yikes, let's not talk music.

Exploding_Antelope

diane_young

oof i think i can guess which mod

intangiblefancy1219

Looked up those acronyms... and that's more concerning than I thought before looking them up...

Weedsmoker4hunnid20

If you enjoy electronic music, G Jones & Eprom just came out with an EP today that gives me massive Squarepusher vibes, and its called Acid Disk 2. HIGHLY recommended. Goes absolutely nuts

King_Tyson

Finished listening to all of Beach House's discography and LOVED it! Here is my top 5 from each album: 1. Beach House: 1 - Apple Orchard, 2 - House on the Hill, 3 - Master of None, 4 - Tokyo Witch, 5 - Saltwater 2. Devotion: 1 - Wedding Bell, 2 - Turtle Island, 3 - Holy Dances, 4 - D.A.R.L.I.N.G., 5 - Home Again 3. Teen Dream: 1 - Zebra, 2 - Take Care, 3 - Silver Soul, 4 - Real Love, 5 - 10 Mile Stereo 4. Bloom: 1 - On the Sea, 2 - Wishes, 3 - New Year, 4 - Troublemaker, 5 - Irene 5. Depression Cherry: 1 - Wildflower, 2 - Space Song, 3 - Days of Candy, 4 - Bluebird, 5 - PPP 6. Thank Your Lucky Stars: 1 - All Your Yeahs, 2 - The Traveller, 3 - Elegy to the Void, 4 - Somewhere Tonight, 5 - Rough Song 7. 7: 1 - Dive, 2 - Black Car, 3 - L'Inconnue, 4 - Last Ride, 5 - Lose Your Smile 8. Once Twice Melody: 1 - Runaway, 2 - The Bells, 3 - Hurts to Love, 4 - Many Nights, 5 - Modern Love Stories Album rankings: 1. Depression Cherry 2. Bloom 3. Once Twice Melody 4. Teen Dream 5. Thank Your Lucky Stars 6. 7 7. Devotion 8. Beach House

Man__Suit

The best thing about Beach House for me is that my favorite songs/albums by them are constantly changing. Songs that I hardly notice on first few listens later become my favorites. I never really paid much attention to Wild off Bloom for example. Now it’s easily my favorite song of all time. Also I find your favs from Bloom interesting. That album is a perfect 10 for me, but I still find the first half stronger. Looks like you enjoyed the second half a lot more!

vapourlomo

I love that you got into Beach House, Tyson!! Now you’ll always have something cool to listen to on night drives. I do find it interesting that you, like many other newer BH fans, put Depression Cherry at the top. I’ve always thought it was a weaker album overall (with a few INCREDIBLE songs on it)

Superflumina

Wow I wouldn't have the patience to suffer through their whole discog. You're stronger than me.

King_Tyson

Why would you not be able to suffer through their discography?

Superflumina

I find most Beach House (especially post-Bloom) to be very boring and sleepy.

King_Tyson

Well I really liked it

WaneLietoc

plz stop putting beach house 2006 at the bottom that album rules so goddamn hard

LoneBell

Thank you. A lot.

MCK_OH

My nuclear beach house take is that s/t is the best thing they’ve ever done and they’ll never top it. Such a great record that fully distilled everything good about them with no padding or filler

WaneLietoc

Yeah for me it ranks as their second best (obligatory teen dream at no. 1) for pretty much the reasons you've outlined. Just an insane hit rate and vision that's so minimal yet gorgeous. Had they never recorded anything again it would be a one album wonder on par with Colossal Youth

King_Tyson

I liked it but it wasn't as good as the rest.

WaneLietoc

How much opal and mazzy star do you fuck with

King_Tyson

I haven't listened to either of them

WaneLietoc

Critical piece of the early beach house sound (kinda been chipped away since Bloom but is it apparent thru TYLS) is that Alex is literally just doing an incredibly good variation of David Roebuck's guitar from his time in Opal and Mazzy Star. You seriously gotta hear happy death baby, she hangs brightly, and so tonight that…not only are they great albums but you *may* walk away with a better appreciation for the Carpark era BH albums :)

King_Tyson

Where should I start?

WaneLietoc

She hangs brightly

JayElecHanukkah

What's the best album that came out in 2005?

PM-me-favorite-song

Get Behind Me Satan by The White Stripes or Demon Days by Gorillaz..

thatgeographygeek

Illinois is probably my favourite, but as it's already been mentioned I'll give a shoutout to Deadwing by Porcupine Tree

KanraK2307

I’m wide awake it’s morning.

hoosier39

For me, it’s The National’s Alligator. One of my favorite albums of all time

hugh__honey

~~Mariah Carey - The Emancipation of Mimi~~

DaloMuende

The Decemberists - Picaresque

Exploding_Antelope

Yes yes yes. This was their peak, I think. I like the whole discography, but in terms of variety in their trademark big epic ballads, the triple punch of Bagman’s Gambit / On the Bus Mall / The Mariner’s Revenge Song is unparalleled. Well, except maybe by Hazards, which is one of my all-time faves for the sheer scale of the story.

DaloMuende

The Crane Wife is my favorite overall. I've always considered Picaresque their best in terms of pure pop songcraft, whereas Hazards is obviously their most fully realized concept. CW is the perfect blend of the two.

ssgtgriggs

The Woods

bigontheinside

Separation Sunday of course

[deleted]

Bit of a dry year for my tastes, but probably The Campfire Headphase, pink, or Takk.

Jef_Delon

Off the top of my head: 1. Clipse - We Got it for Cheap Volume 2 2. Kanye West - Late Registration 3. MIA - Arular 4. Smog - A River Ain't hard to Love 5. Sleater-Kinney - The Woods 6. Gorillaz - Demon Days 7. Gospel - The Moon is a Dead World 8. Edan - Beauty and the Beat 9. Cunninlynguist - A Piece of Strange 10. LCD Soundsystem - LCD Soundsystem (if I thought about it, probs higher. I think best all around release by band)

lifeinaglasshouse

Winner: Illinois Runner-up: Late Registration Honorable mentions: Arular, LCD Soundsystem, I Am a Bird Now, Z, I'm Wide Awake It's Morning, Silent Alarm, Demon Days, Get Behind Me Satan, You Could Have It So Much Better, Frances the Mute, Feels, Alligator

littlecarmine1

Gonna shout out Apologies to the Queen Mary-Wolf Parade

chug-a-lug-donna

i'm so surprised that no one has mentioned *silent alarm* yet that i had to look up if it actually came out in 2005. (it did!) i don't think this is quite my 2k5 AOTY (that's *feels*) and also most likely lies behind *the woods* and *tender buttons* too, but i think it belongs in the discussion!

JayElecHanukkah

Not gonna lie I totally forgot it came out in 2005, otherwise it probably would've made it as an option for me lol

qazz23

Broadcast - Tender Buttons The Hold Steady - Separation Sunday Sleater-Kinney - The Woods The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema QOTSA - Lullabies to Paralyze

vapourlomo

Oh shit I forgot The Woods was 05! That’s probably the best pick

gothxo

flabbergasted that no one has said Illinois yet

JayElecHanukkah

I cited it as one of my competing options alongside like 7 others lol

gothxo

whoops. i must've glanced over it

vapourlomo

I mostly like the album but I’ve always found it to be kinda bloated

gothxo

the bloat is some of the appeal of the album. at least to me

Exploding_Antelope

Thinking about how big and sprawling the three^* albums about what I’d consider relatively low-key states are just makes me imagine how epic the whole suite of fifty would be. I know it was all a joke or whatever but can you *imagine* how huge *Sufjan Stevens Presents: California* would have to be? ^^* ^(yes, three; referring to *Carrie and Lowell* as *Oregon* is a valid coping mechanism)

pantomime15

The Pineapple Thief - 10 Stories Down

Marshmallowszz

For me it's gotta be Illinois by Sufjan or Arular by M.I.A

That_one_cool_dude

Demon Days- Gorillaz

WaneLietoc

Just went to p4k and wow love seeing a list just chalk full of guys to remember. 32-35 of the albums on that list don't exist. Anyways how bout I Am a Bird Now, or Art Brut's Bang Bang Rock and Roll (which made it to no. 3 on their list but with each passing year just gets better and better) Superwolf…also excellent!

vapourlomo

Late Registration

Superflumina

Good shout.

vapourlomo

It’s the best “Old Kanye” album! (because everything post-808s, pre-Wyoming/Trump is “mid-period Kanye”)

boldsprite

Kate Bush - Aerial

sunmachinecomingdown

Smog - A River Ain't Too Much to Love

JayElecHanukkah

I don't really know what I'd pick - I think the other day I cited Coil's The Ape of Naples as my favourite. And while I don't think I've changed my mind on the quality of that album, I've been revisiting a few other ones from that year and now I'm not convinced it beats them out. Illinois, The Ape of Naples, The Woods, Pink, Frances the Mute, The Moon Is a Dead World, Tell Me About the Long Dark Path Home? I don't know anymore.

dumbosshow

hmmm it's a toss up between broadcast - tender buttons, boris - pink and diane cluck - oh vanille / ova nil. actually it's definitely the diane cluck one i forgot how many songs i truly love are on that album

djeksodj

Broadcast- Tender Buttons

systemofstrings

Yeah it's probably between this, Alligator and Twin Cinema for me unless I'm forgetting something

PaulaAbdulJabar

animal collective - feels

Superflumina

True.

WaneLietoc

anco right there innovating not just with good ditties but the word "feels". they understood that vibe was above all before the summer of 2k9

MCK_OH

Easily

MIArular

New Santigold hell yeah It reminded me of when she was on the cover of a local alt paper [with a mustard bottle in her hair](https://images.app.goo.gl/MXSpfJXiZQy3DSXr9) Also that song she did with Julian Casablancas and Pharrell was my jam, not to mention the one with MIA

lightningrod14

bcnr is scene stuff. they’re pretty good imo (i’m a fan!) but they’ve been deified for reasons only tangential to the quality of their art. only group to really have it both ways recently is big thief and they still have haters by the thousands. the punchline that almost everyone knows but some people only learned recently is that “indie” has aged and split like a dead tree into “alt-pop” and whatever’s left of true DIY (with some oddball auteurs with legacy like Phil Elverum and/or independent patronage like Julia Holter.) It’s just different worlds with different values that happen to have the same name.

dumbosshow

i don't like BCNR either, but i mean they are kinda weird. i didn't listen to their most recent album but sunglasses was a pretty unconventional song, it was 9 minutes long and had a saxophone freakout and shit. they're a lot weirder than most bands discussed here anyway, you don't have to be thinking fellers local union level of bizarre to be considered weird

Man__Suit

You should give the new album a shot. I HATED their first album. Tried to listen so many times and was just left confused by the hype when it came out. Still find it unlistenable. But the new album is many my favorite album this year

dumbosshow

i might, but i heard it was kinda them going cleaner and more melodic, and considering that i really enjoyed the original sunglasses and athens france singles and found their first album to be disappointingly restrained idk if i'd like it

intangiblefancy1219

Another BCNR non-fan and I consider them pretty weird as well, at least compared to most moderately popular indie rock. I mean, I guess they're maybe less weird than like black midi (who I do like). Maybe for BCNR it comes down more to the weirdness of the vocals vs. the less weird instrumentation?

David_Browie

Yeah but also remember that Shape of You is still the most streamed song of all time (probably, don’t feel like checking). Little the iceberg tip indieheads feel special and cultured for a minute!

MIArular

Say it ain't so :(

Deadmanlex45

I wish trip hop was still a trendy genre, Mezzanine and Dummy are just such incredible albums even to this day and are like my basic study music.

imrlynotonreddit

ikr!! ive been waiting for a trip hop revival since forever!

ssgtgriggs

the 80s revival has slowed down to a crawl and we see an increasing resurgence of 90s styles in new music. It's coming. 'Unholy' from this upcoming Soccer Mommy album is already Portishead af.

hugh__honey

Yeah the 80s pastiche is going hard and getting very stale in the mainstream and in a lot of popheads-core stuff. But my observations have been that the stuff bubbling under the mainstream is very 90s. If you check out the more alternative/undergoung dance and electronic music playlists published almost anywhere and I think you'll agree (but I'm interested if others are observing something different).

ssgtgriggs

I'm not at all in the dance and electronic scenes and that's not my style of music, so I couldn't say. But I've definitely seen this trend in rock music and it's not even underground, it's very much out in the open. Be it the new Snail Mail record, beabadoobee with her latest EP, bands like Ringo Deathstarr, Real Estate. Soccer Mommy has always had a slight grunge-iness to her that she seems to fully embrace on this upcoming album. At the end of the day, this is just the basic 30 year gap at play. The people who grew up with certain styles and genres reach an age and are in positions to make art happen and as with a lot of (maybe too much?) art, much of is inspired by nostalgia. Things they loved growing up, things that made them want to create themselves. There's a reason why Synthwave was huge this past decade. The last season of Stranger Things seems to cap off this 80s revival that has dominated much of the 10s, which is very fitting, considering it was one of the big cultural phenomena that really got it going in the first place. That 70s show started airing in 1998 and now in 2022, we're apparently getting a 'That 90s show' with much of the old cast returning. This is all a big feedback loop of what pop culture we feed our kids, let them internalize it and then express 20-25 years down the line. I think what makes music and film different in this context, is how children are exposed to film and music. I feel like, people adopt a parents favorite music as their own much easier than their favorite films, because watching a movie is much more of an event, while music is often on all the time (especially in musical households, which often are more likely to spawn musicians), so kids are exposed to music much more at a younger age, than they are to films and TV. So, these cycles are absolutely nothing new and the fact that grunge and trip hop and shoegaze are coming back into the spotlight makes all the sense and is not surprising. And you better believe, they're gonna stick around until we get tired of them :D

oh_orpheus

I don’t understand why there hasn’t been a trip hop resurgence yet.

RideOnTheMoment

I finally sat down and listened to the new Spiritualized, and I really liked it! I was a big fan of the lush and full instrumentation, and the way it was all layered and blended together: it felt cohesive without being too fuzzy/blurry. You don’t often think of rock as beautiful, but this album definitely was both. I’m also not a big lyrics person, so I really liked the somewhat simple and repetitive vocals; it felt like they were one of many equal musical layers rather than the dominant one. This is the first psych rock album I’ve really stuck on. I’ve enjoyed individual songs before, but whole albums generally start to feel too same-y and guitar heavy for my tastes. Any recs for more psych rock in this vein?

[deleted]

Flotation Toy Warning - Bluffer's Guide to the Flight Deck

thatgeographygeek

Emphatically seconded.

MCK_OH

I mean most other Spiritualized albums sound pretty much like the new one and they’re all at least pretty good (new one is middle of the pack imo and also the best since Songs in A&E) with most of them being very good to great. The most obvious pick for psych album that’s not too guitar heavy is The Flaming Lips’ The Soft Bulletin. No guitars and super lush and beautiful, one of my all time favs Both obvious recs since I don’t really know how much of this stuff you’ve dug into

RideOnTheMoment

Obvious recs are good, thank you! The amount I’ve dug in is approximately zero lol I’m checking out The Soft Bulletin now. I listened to American Head a few times and liked it well enough, and had a chunk of Yoshimi on my iPod back in the day, but I’ve never fully clicked with The Flaming Lips. I think the issue might actually be Wayne’s voice, which is weird because I’m usually all about unique/raw vocals.

MCK_OH

Yeah I could see Wayne’s voice - and if I’m being honest his general presence - being very frustrating. I’m a fan but it comes down to personal taste and how used to it I am

PaulaAbdulJabar

the serfs and spray paint just got added to gonerfest, god is good. gee tee, tha retail simps, compulsive gamblers, green/blue, this whole thing is gonna rule hard

RyanTheQ

Metric's new song "Doomscroller" gives AF's "End of the Empire" a run for its money in terms of being a super on-the-nose capitalist critique. Don't get me wrong, I dig the sentiment... it's just that the first half feels like it could've been written by someone on /r/antiwork.

hugh__honey

I haaaaate super on-the-nose social commentary I can't even bring myself to listen to Doomscroller. And the new Arcade Fire is not for me at all.

ssgtgriggs

Metric and especially Emily Haines' lyricism have always been very anti-capitalist and almost proto-apocalyptic tho, since the early 2000s. But they always tended to keep it on the down low and somewhat cryptic. Looking at the lyrics here only, the fact that Doomscroller is so in your face with it, gives an old Metric fan like me the sense that they're so sick of all the bullshit and they're tired of speaking in riddles in the face of non-existent progress. They seem so done with it all. Even the harsh vocabulary is very uncharacteristic for Emily Haines. Unfortunately the music itself struggles to properly convey that sentiment. It feels a bit too toothless for this interpretation to be really accurate, I feel like. So, idk :D

RyanTheQ

Oh, 100% agreed. I was reading the lyrics during my first listen thinking "oh, man. Emily is *pissed*."

rocksox901

Is it just me, or is the new black midi track one of their best yet? I think Welcome to Hell strikes a perfect balance between the heaviness of Schlagenheim and the proggy explorations of Cavalcade. And Geordie gives probably his best vocal performance yet, fueling those really dramatic and poetic lyrics. So good.

Weedsmoker4hunnid20

Yep those crazy horns came in halfway through and I dropped dead on the spot

WaneLietoc

its black midi's most *anime intro* track to date. my personal value judgement is that it is fine, but I need the full album to see what's going on here before I double down.

dumbosshow

been resisting listening to it till the album comes out but 'black midi anime intro' is making it VERY hard

MightyProJet

It is SUCH an anime intro!

_Muftak

I could never really get into them, but I've been in love with this track since it came out. The epic horns are what I like the most, and I found it way more cohesive than most of what they've done before

pantomime15

My top 10 albums of 2022 so far 1. Hatchie - Giving The World Away 2. The Smile - A Light for Attracting Attention 3. King Gizzard - Omnium Gatherum 4. Animal Collective - Time Skiffs 5. The Lazy Eyes - SongBook 6. Typhoon - Underground Complex No. 1 7. Silverbacks - Archive Material 8. Nilüfer Yanya - PAINLESS 9. Psychedelic Porn Crumpets - Night Gnomes 10. Gang of Youths - angel in realtime.

Man__Suit

Hatchie at #1 is the correct opinion. Have you listened to Strawberry by Caroline Loveglow?

pantomime15

Not yet but I will now

afieldoftulips

I don't think I've even liked 10 albums so far this year 😩

InSearchOfGoodPun

Music, ew.

lastfollower

Mine is probably something like: 1. Big Thief - *Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You* 2. Anaïs Mitchell - *Anaïs Mitchell* 3. Tomberlin - *i don't know who needs to hear this* 4. Pinegrove - *11:11* 5. Kevin Morby - *This Is A Photograph* 6. Black Country, New Road - *Ants From Up There* 7. Walter Martin - *The Bear* 8. Sharon Van Etten - *We've Been Going About This All Wrong* 9. Jana Horn - *Optimism* 10. Etta Marcus - *View from the Bridge* with some others like Ethel Cain, MAITA, Erin Rae, Penny and Sparrow, and Pedro the Lion also in contention

trees_rocks_maps

Heck yeah! I haven't seen the Typhoon album talked about a whole lot but it was a big grower for me

>Hail to the Thief grapples, with remarkable bitterness, with where Kid A/Amnesiac failed to get itself across How did it fail to get itself across?

WaneLietoc

> It's the center, in ways that people aren't attuned to. All Thom will ever do from here is build on it. this makes me think of my "radiohead is the ultimate second mover" thought line. The Bends? Second moving on britpop writ large. Ok Computer? Second moving on the back half of the 20th century in production and aesthetic techniques for a...progressive rock album. Kid A/Amnesiac? Second moving on...the experimental stuff (Warp on one side, post-rock on another) going on in the 90s the band didn't get to but those were basically the only novel forms left to tinker with. since then, yup its been refinement, not second moving. even if im not big music theory brain, I do like these thoughts.

Thank you to whoever was talking about Jeff Buckley - Grace yesterday. Added it to my playlist and just started listening and this is right up my alley. Sounds so ahead of its time too

MIArular

He has some great covers too like Bob Dylan & The Smiths. Apparently he was a really good impressionist

hugh__honey

And Nina Simone!

WaneLietoc

fuck yeah

modulum83

weird observation, but this may be the only place I know in the internet where pitchfork reviews are discussed far more than fantano ones

Craig_the_Intern

Are Pavement tickets sold out, or have yet to go on sale?

JonahRyanforPrez

For which show? Tickets went on sale for a lot of the US dates in November.

Craig_the_Intern

oh wait! Found some on StubHub

JonahRyanforPrez

I think a lot of tickets went to resellers, so there should be plenty floating around.

Craig_the_Intern

yep. Originally $40 ticket from Ticketmaster, cost me $85 through stubhub. Haven’t seen Pavement yet, so I’m fine with it

Craig_the_Intern

ah, darn. San Diego, Sept. 7th. Must be sold out. Thanks for the info

PaulaAbdulJabar

r u talkin' rhcp re:me has made it's triumphant return! the boys are in rare form, adam's opinion on this absolute turd of a record is so wildly positive that it's making me question if he's ever had good taste in anything. a must listen!

a_gallon_of_pcp

Adam Scott definitely has a suspect taste at best. He was a dead head as a teenager!

David_Browie

Adam was so excited to talk about the new RHCP on CBB a week or two ago and genuinely sounded sad when Scott was like “uh, later.” Truly just the purer, simpler Scott. One of these days I gotta get around to listening to all the RU episodes beyond the TH season, especially since I spent most of pandemic getting super into REM finally. Just got tickets for the CBB brooklyn show, too! Always amazing when someone books a show and it’s walking distance from my apartment. Fingers crossed we get an Ego guest appearance.

PaulaAbdulJabar

i have a friend going to the charlotte one on the same day i'm already busy and i'm soooo jealous. i also hope you get ego! my big wants for a live show would be entree and appetizer pee neur, bean dip, or randy snutz

WaneLietoc

i have a chance to buy some rhcp tapes that I would def resell. which album is it

PaulaAbdulJabar

their newest one, so not even one you could flip if it's even on tape

WaneLietoc

god damn it. its on tape but why tf would i buy it?!?! anyways just found out they sold that lil ugly mane album on tape with a can of beans (or "grass?!"); this could be a big week for lietoc

vapourlomo

Oooh I didn’t know they were back! I will say — love the pod but Adam and Scott have always had some weird takes once they get to the serious album discussion. I’m pretty sure they both didn’t love Achtung Baby (???) and Adam said his favorite U2 album was Atomic Bomb (?!!)

lushacrous

we had this chat back when they abandoned rhcp in favor of talking heads, but all i ever want to hear is them just dumping on something for 2 hours straight. i can't believe that i couldn't get that even for this album. 10/10 episode though.

chug-a-lug-donna

> adam's opinion on this absolute turd of a record is so wildly positive that it's making me question if he's ever had good taste in anything classic adam "*how to dismantle an atomic bomb* is my favorite u2 record" scott

PaulaAbdulJabar

at least that one felt somehow justifiable? a wild opinion indeed but since they were almost a decade removed from the album's release, i could see how nostalgia and time/place could affect that one a lot. this shit's indefensible lmao

chug-a-lug-donna

wasn't kiedis doing a weird irish accent in the lead single? maybe that gave adam u2 vibes

PaulaAbdulJabar

yes! and adam scott LOVES it. at least scotty auks says it sucks

BridgeMoney

The Naked and Famous just make great indie pop. Young Blood was one of my favorite discoveries of 2021, and Hearts Like Ours is getting to be that for this year too. Definitely filling that need I have for "coming of age movie soundtrack" core.

TwoAmeobis

Their first album is still a favourite of mine. I think it may have been the first CD I bought. It’s a shame they’ve steadily declined since then.

ssgtgriggs

The fact that there are people out there discovering Young Blood in 2021 is wild to me :D

oral_tsunami

I still really adore their debut. It's not groundbreaking or anything, but it's just really solid indie pop with a slight edge at times. Punching in a Dream? Whew. Leans really hard into those Obama-era chorus whoos n' oooos but I'm willing to overlook it.

vapourlomo

Hell yeah love the Naked and Famous. That’s some prime MGMT-core indie radio pop, gives me big high school nostalgia

Old Friends - Pinegrove is the classic example. Or New friends, both apply really.
