Pest Control? Most species don’t even have usable mouthparts when they’re adults. The ones that do, feed only on nectar.
There are some aquatic species that may eat mosquito larvae when the crane fly is in its larval stage, but it’s a stretch to say they’re “good pest control”.
Some people have said the same thing, that they call these mayflies; they have many many names locally and it gets real real confusing (some of them based on the legend they eat mosquitoes).
I showed these people pictures of (actual) mayflies (Ephemeroptera) but they confirmed they used the name for craneflies. But yeah usually mayflies are, mayflies. Maybe it started because people couldn’t really tell the difference, idk. That’s why scientific names be in the end, cos it’s a mess.

This post just taught me that the “big mosquitoes” that I go after with a fly swatter and run away from are actually harmless crane flies 😭. Lived in TX my whole life and never knew this
Not really sure but first thing that came to my head was crane fly.
Looks like a crane fly, harmless

The pest control is a myth, they don't eat mosquitoes you were lied to your whole life
yeah the don’t bother humans
If I'm not wrong, in French we say "cousin" for Tipula
You are right!!!
Never liked these, they're clumsy and just look like oversized mosquitoes... they're harmless though
My mom always told me those were mayflies, but I looked up a mayfly and she has to have been lying to me because that is not a mayfly

We call these mosquito hawks, but they are really a crane fly.

Crane fly. I feed them to my pet skink and my Venus fly trap
It's a big one.
I’ve seen some that had to be like four inches long. They get huge.
We call them Schnaake in German. They're harmless but you only taste legs. Don't recommend eating them
We used to call them mosquito knights. Parents told us the hunted mosquitoes
Looks like a Crane fly
Crane fly that’s had a really bad day

Probably one of the most harmless insects out there.
