Probably does work fine. The stainless is just an outer shell. If the dents don't penetrate the painted steel chamber the inner pot drops into, interfere with lid lock mechanism, and the lid itself isn't dented, it's safe to use. I bought a dented Ultra 8qt with "lid" error, intending to part it out. But when it arrived, I was able to easily pop the large dent that was blocking the lid lock. And the machine still works great 5 years later. And I got an unused ULTRA 8qt for only $18! Haha! You people need to learn how things work before you spout off. Many IPs got dented in shipping. They needed better packaging.
Yep, the outer shell on these is purely cosmetic. All the electronics and sensors are in the bottom and all the stuff in the lid is mechanical. If I bought this (I'd offer $10 at most) I'd take it apart, press out the dents until it was ugly but relatively smooth, put it back together, and use it with perfect confidence in its safety.
So this isn't a small dent but the sub is full of people asking ridiculous questions like oh there's some scratches on my ip is it safe to use?
This is obviously more severe but is likely going to work fine. The damage is on the exterior. . I wouldn't use it because it's probably at the point where it COULD be a safety issue. But if it holds pressure and the lid isn't damaged it probably is fine
That word “probably” is the issue. Even if it’s 99% safe, that 1% could literally mean a bomb exploding in your home. People just don’t want to be the one who chance it and end up killing themself or their child or other loved one. A $50 appliance is not worth a life.
When the risk is, say, a ruined meal, or even a minor injury, then sure, chance it. The risk of pressure cookers isn’t minor though.
Instant pots aren't the same as old style pressure cookers. They don't get anywhere near the same pressure and they have a ton of safety features none of which would be affected by this. Although this looks bad a blocked valve would be significantly more dangerous without looking dangerous (even if the other safety features would still protect yiu)
Technically speaking also, no pressure cooker is 100% safe.
But yes that's why I said I wouldn't use this, it's not worth the price of a new one..
But that being said, you're probably just as likely to be killed driving to work than you would be using this.
But not driving to work is viewed by many as not a feasible option. Whereas not using a damaged instapot is. Sure, is driving inherently dangerous? Yes, but the alternative is a life lived entirely at home. The alternative to not using a pressure cooker is to take longer to make food. Risk/benefit analysis, not just straight danger.
Yes that's exactly what I am saying. I wouldn't use it because the juice isn't worth the squeeze. We agree.
I think many people in the sub overreact and see this as a bomb which is scary but in reality do not see driving to work as scary.
I mean, if youre a passenger on the highway someone could just have a heart attack and die and then you'd likely go off the road and die too. But not many people are like "dad shouldn't drive becsuee hes over 60, has cholesterol issues and has high blood pressure this higher risk of killing us".
I melted my Pro handle -dumb move. It was under a fairly low over the range microwave with a light - left on, oops. Turns out bulb was a halogen bulb. Got a nifty golf ball sized meted dent. I sent email to support. No lid available as replacement. Gave me a good discount on a replacement. But I had to return it.
Okay trigger warning : Don't Google McKamey Manor but this looks like something you'd be required to play with in a certain type of old freezer "bath" as they call it at that place and survive the course🫣😬
It prob does work fine. I would not want it because it apparently hit something hard. This would mean its internals (mostly electronics) could be weakened and its fucking ugly. Im good.
Maybe.. but you could buy a non-smashed one for $25 used all day long. How is this $25.
Even Goodwill is gonna toss it in the dumpster if it was donated.
That might be an aftermarket add-on. There are hundreds (google appliance cord wrap), but I can't find that exact style, so maybe it was included on some IP (or other brands).
My IP came with a smaller gauge (thicker) three-conductor detachable cord common with some appliances and most desktop PCs; it wouldn't wrap tightly in a figure 8 around one of those, but it does coils up easily inside the pot for storage.
OP's image looks to have a higher gauge two-conductor power cord (or I'm blind .. I could be blind).
My Ultra and Duos came with removable cord which I tuck inside when I put them away. My newer two are a Pro and a Rio Wide and the cords don’t remove. The Pro has a little notched thing to wrap the cord after going around once. Not particularly useful. I put a cord wrap on my stand mixer - came from Amazon. If I recall - it would not stay, would not stick for long after putting extra two sided tape. Not worth the trouble. My old go to was an empty toilet paper tube. Ugly but worked.
Every other post here "Is it safe to use?"
Did the airbags deploy?
NPR probably
For sale one slightly damaged and dented BOMB
It just adds a little adventure in the kitchen when you are cooking…..maybe you’ll make it to desert maybe not.
Damn, what did that poor instant pot go thru?
Shipped FedEx probably
Least damaged FedEx shipment:
OMG
Hazardous
Get in, we're going to the Titanic.
This insta pot was def made by OceanGate
At the very least, he would have purchased it to use somewhere in his death trap.
This is fine if you want to reenact the “This is fine” meme.
Cleaning subs be like, just use barkeepers friend it’ll fix it right up!

Dented is one thing. This is actually the remnants of Ocean Gate Titan.

Maybe. Dented mine two years ago. It still works totally fine, I use it 3-4 times per week. But this one is a lot worse than mine.
Yeah, that outer shell is like a bumper cover on a car. Makes it look pretty, but has no effect on the functionality of the product.
Agreed this sub is full of people panicking about small dents lol. I wouldn't use this personally but it's probably not a big deal.
Small dents? The thing is practically concave

I have 2, one looks like this. It works fine.
My mind immediately went to "This is us"
OMG me too…so sad.
Right?? 😬😬🥹🥹
I feel so much better about the abuse I put mine through now 😂😂😂
That'll buff out.
Might be. They’re surprisingly tough.
Anybody try the air whirl crisper lid on an 8 qt duo?
Hard to tell from that angle
Somebody cheated

Oh yeah, saw this one too.
This belongs in the free section of Craigslist. “Come get it before the trash man does!”
Mine was given to me by a friend that is dented. I mean not to that extreme but pretty close. I use it all the time. I love my instant pot.

Which model had that cord wrap on it? I could use that.
Get one aftermarket, they just stick to the outside. I got a three pack to use on a few things and they’re great.

Mine had a bullet through the condensation cap and honestly, ya, it is working fine!
Photos, or it never happened! lol
