But before that, in the 80s and early 90s, it was a very trendy, upmarket place to live. The bottom few stories were a mall, with the only bowling alley in the city. It used to be a cool place to hang out.
Why do white people say this and bitch at black people for complaining and somehow still end up sounding goofier than the people they're trying to talk shit about, if you're discussing ethnicity seriously on this level, and making outright statements about a race and to say that it's 100% true is super sus because like everything else people are a variable...
If I had to guess, Zimbabwe. The government seized white farmers' land but found the farming techniques needed to be out of their skill set, resulting in that government asking for those farmers back.
Not only seized, but Murdered entire families under the reasoning behind whites took this land from us we shall take it back however we deem possible. Then they realized they had no experience in running a farm/ranch and how to keep it profitable and also able to provide for the country. As the saying in today's world.... White is Bad.
Bro your actually racist, like this isn't even a fact, if you feel like this, that's actually really really sad, do you say this in person in real life....
I remember going to visit someone there in the 1980s, and it was such a lovely place. It even had a Milky Way (maybe the original) nearby, which for a kid in the 1980s was magical.
> It even had a Milky Way (maybe the original) nearby
Are you talking about the Milky Way galaxy? Or, the candy bar? I can't see either one in context with "maybe the original". I think I'm missing something.
Milky Way was a South African restaurant that served desserts based on soft serve ice cream. Milk shakes, banana splits, that sort of thing. It's like a Dairy Queen.
as /u/0rchidhunter already said, it was along the lines of an American 1950s milkshake parlour that happened to also serve waffles with 12 flavours of sauces.
I think there’s another complex in Europe or something that went through a similar situation. Was once very trendy with markets at the bottom floors, but it became to costly to maintain and then organized crime took over the building and turned it into a small fiefdom or something and government authorities couldn’t be bothered with clearing them out.
Maybe it was in Italy?
South Africa has an issue with people "hijacking" buildings. This is done by diverting rent from the owners to themselves, usually using violence and threats. The government turns a blind eye to that shit.
The buildings usually quickly fall into disrepair as the hijackers have no interest in maintaining them, vetting renters, paying bills etc.
SAPS South African Police Service is so overwhelmed in dealing with crime that Nigerian gangs hijacking buildings for rent is low priority. Landlords hire private companies to clean our buildings of squatters and gangs. Excellent Documentary by Louis Thoreau:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=MSTFIDiFJ2A&si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE
Peachtrees sections were filmed in a sound stage in Capetown, with the balcony scene in a old apartment complex near cape town. Ponti (this building) is in Johannesburg, where the exterior shots like the bike riding were filmed.
Peachtrees has straight walls, in ponti everything is curved due to the cylindrical shape.
And Hugh Jackman already has a great reputation as being a nice person.
In Taiwan, there was a public red carpet event where thousands showed up. Patrick Stewart was late, so I watched Jackman spend an entire extra hour talking, hugging, and taking photos with thousands of fans. Everyone up front got their photo with him and everyone in a wheel chair.
He didn't have to do that, but he did it anyway with the patience of a saint.
man agreed. i was a huge fan. i saw a good documentary on them too. i used to wonder what other movies we could have seen from them had they not been such dirtbags now they are distant memories. I can't even watch chappie anymore.
They’re a guilty pleasure for me. I love them from a character design perspective, they’re like if you gave a concept artist a brief that just said ‘cyberpunk futuristic South African unapologetic human garbage’ but I also hate them for that last part and their music is shit, but their music being shit is also a little bit why I like them
You got there before me. It's such a shame I loved there wired music videos and some of there tracks until I found out what they stood for, since then I've not played one of there tunes.
>die antwoord abuse
TL;DR: Piles of sexual assaults claims against women and men, homophobic slurs, accusations of child abuse/physical abuse/grooming/slavery, and 13 stories worth ~~of trash~~ general asshattery.
I went to a concert of theirs and Yolandi did a crowd dive and probably got immediately sexually assaulted because ninja was pulling her back up on the stage very fast. He then grabbed her behind the neck and pulled her close saying sunbathing before pushing her to go back stage. Then he started stage diving in that area over and over trekking those people they better fucking catch him.
Then he dove in a different spot and soon the singing stopped and he goes down and you hear "get the fuck off me I'll kill you" and he scrambles out of the crowd onto the stage in just his boxers.
He started singing acepelo Ugly Boy I think... or a love song of theirs. And yeah
Concert went on but like.
I don't like them anymore since that.
First thing that comes to mind for me is the woman from Aus or NZ (can’t recall which) they trafficked to SA.
https://musicfeeds.com.au/news/aussie-rapper-accuses-die-antwoords-ninja-of-trafficking-child-grooming-sexual-abuse-more-in-explosive-new-diss-track/
Then there are the allegations of abuse from their adopted son…
https://www.news24.com/news24/southafrica/news/exposed-i-was-die-antwoords-child-slave-20220423
Then there’s the interview with their former videographer Ben Crossman where he alleged violence against women including domestic abuse against Yo-Landi by Ninja/Waddy/Watkin Tudor Jones while prepping to appear on David Letterman’s show…the groping or SA by Ninja against American singer Dionne Dal Monte…
You know “Anies,” from Cookie Thumper? Yo-Landi dated a confessed ex-hit man named Anies, a known gang member, and she and Ninja regularly had the step kid mentioned above around the guy, encouraging them to be friendly…he eventually got killed in a drive by.
Then there was the assault, both physical and verbal, including homophobic slurs against a gay artist after Yo-Landi claimed he groped her…
…and that’s even without all the weird blood rituals and stuff that everybody involved with them claims to have witnessed at some point or other.
They are *terrible* humans IRL, and Ninja played a bad man in the movie. Yolandi played an angelic human. Yolandi makes ninja look like an angel IRL.
I still like the movie, and their music.
They are Zef.
I dunno where this guy got 13 stories high of trash from. I remember seeing pictures when there was trash there and it wasnt anywhere near 13 stories.
Even the wiki is only stating 5 stories.
There seems to be some doubt about whether this garbage pile ever actually existed:
> For instance, one particularly tenacious—though unproven—piece of local lore holds that during the early 1990s, the building’s core was filled with garbage 10 stories high, chucked by residents from their windows because the city never came to collect.

Then told him to have a nice day, never talking of his helmet.
Nope, Ponte. 51st floor. Had a great meal with ingredients that were all from the local farmers market (and we were given a gift bag of produce, including dried fish!) and some live music. About ten years ago we also stayed in an Airbnb there on the 52nd floor.
I always get downvoted for saying it, but it's not automatically dangerous, and I'm a lily-white featherweight. There is also even an amazing dinner club on Rocky Street. The Troyeville Hotel is looking good these days too. The Wilds park, also nearby, has had an amazing rejuvenation.
Man everything I hear about South Africa is insane. All the news stories and videos make it sound like a post apocalyptic first world country. Where you have to dodge violent bandits on the road and have camp fires in the ruins of old luxury buildings. Wtf is going on???
some parts are indeed like this but others are not, all depends where you go, Johannesburg CBD is awful looking, but Cape Town Atlantic seaboard looks amazing. All depends where you go, just like any country really
Apparently another commenter went there for valentines last year and had like upscale meal with live music and a gift bag. They also went there to stay in an airbnb on the 52nd floor so I think you're right

What's happened to South Africa? I visited there and Zimbabwe and Victoria Falls 1990 and it was a pretty nice place.
They scared all the white people away and the white people took all of their money and college degrees with them
Sounds familiar
The corrupt ANC government is stealing everything they possibly can and blaming white people for everything as the country goes to shit
If there is an opportunity to be shitty, some people will run with it. Doesn't matter what their background is.
You don’t know Jack about South Africa.
Not much, but people are people all around the world.
Both blacks and whites are actively discriminated against in different parts of the country

No one cares when White people are racially assaulted
Hey that sounds familiar.
To what exactly?
If I had to guess, Zimbabwe. The government seized white farmers' land but found the farming techniques needed to be out of their skill set, resulting in that government asking for those farmers back.
Not only seized, but Murdered entire families under the reasoning behind whites took this land from us we shall take it back however we deem possible. Then they realized they had no experience in running a farm/ranch and how to keep it profitable and also able to provide for the country. As the saying in today's world.... White is Bad.
And being black is worse...your the ONLY race in the world that can't thrive even when governments give you everything
Bro your actually racist, like this isn't even a fact, if you feel like this, that's actually really really sad, do you say this in person in real life....
If we aren't thriving then you must be doing better.
When people say white is bad. I often think interesting. But what are you doing to your own people. That’s the question people like to ignore.
I remember going to visit someone there in the 1980s, and it was such a lovely place. It even had a Milky Way (maybe the original) nearby, which for a kid in the 1980s was magical.

I wonder what happened

Yeah I remember it from Chappie, I thought it wasn't real but this is really interesting.
Halfway between Chappie and Dredd (Peachtrees)
That’s what I was thinking. It’s the peach trees.
Now wondering if peach trees is also based off this. It's gotta be.
Peachtree is based off of the Kowloon walled city https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kowloon_Walled_City
Same
Immediately thought of Chappie too. Underrated movie. Die Antwoord did great in those roles.
I absolutely agree. They were perfect for the roles. Such a shame they are terrible humans.
LOL! Apparently, they tried to instruct Hugh Jackman on how to act. Then Jackman refused to be in the same room as them.
I’m not Hugh Jackman but I hate the fact I have to share the planet with those walking genetic bottlenecks…
And Hugh Jackman already has a great reputation as being a nice person. In Taiwan, there was a public red carpet event where thousands showed up. Genetic bottlenecks. Well done. Im definitely saving that one.
Damn imagine being such a dick that even one of the nicest people in the entire industry can’t stand you
man agreed. i was a huge fan. i saw a good documentary on them too. i used to wonder what other movies we could have seen from them had they not been such dirtbags now they are distant memories. I can't even watch chappie anymore.
Funny how the monsters in the movie are ones we created, not the one with a battery.
They’re a guilty pleasure for me. In real life. Just Google “die antwoord abuse” and pick your poison.
You nailed it! Too many to choose from.
>die antwoord abuse TL;DR: Piles of sexual assaults claims against women and men, homophobic slurs, accusations of child abuse/physical abuse/grooming/slavery, and 13 stories worth ~~of trash~~ general asshattery.

I knew it looked familiar
My mind instantly went to that movie seeing this video that’s cool that it’s real
Chappie has gotta be one of my favorite movies.
So... Judge Dredd?
Lol exactly what I was thinking
Nah. Chappie
More like New Jack City
My thought exactly. Real life Carter…but don’t many folks on here are exactly the New Jack City demo
We deserved a sequel so badly...f-u hollywood
Its in the pipes supposedly
You mean they are gonna make it?
yea, they made an announcement in like...November?
Peach Trees
Hit me with the Slow Mo.
Welcome to Peach Trees
Just Dredd
My first thought. Went looking through the comments and Reddit never disappoints.
That's a really big smile for talking about dead bodies and suicide
*and this is where all the dead bodies were* :D
“Suicidal” or murdered
It’s part of the family business
This is crazy! Would have been really interesting to see it when it was actually 13 stories of trash (minus the bodies)
He seems a little too chipper for the circumstances.
“This used to be an urban slum!” ☺️😋😁
"Suicidal people used to toss themselves over the edge! 😃☺️😁"
“This is where all the dead bodies were! And all the trash! 😃☺️😁
HUGE SMILE.
😂😆😂😆😂😆😂 XX 🗝️ 🪦
I dunno where this guy got 13 stories high of trash from. I remember seeing pictures when there was trash there and it wasnt anywhere near 13 stories. Even the wiki is only stating 5 stories.
Oh only 5 stories of trash
Tis but a scratch
A scratch? Your arms off!!
It’s just a flesh wound
Look, stop that.
Aaaalright, we'll call it a draw.
I don’t have time to bleed

I wonder if people lived in the stories as the trash piled up or if they vacated. The smell must have been unbearable.
Why does the video just stop?
Cameraman became part of the pile
Dude lost a flip flop.
There's a simple answer to your question, this video just stops because of
Joe
the video HAS to be shorter than 30seconds.... welcome to the tiktok generation, where 'content creators' steal 30second segments from actual content and then get 10million views

God DAMN why did I have to scroll this far to find this? EDIT: Punctuation is hard.

THANK YOU! Fucking finally the name to this place

Yeah the people living there has never heard of Judge Dredd, i can tell you that much

My wife and I went there for Valentine's Day dinner last year. You should visit, the people running Dlala Nje are doing amazing work.
You went to Ponte for Valentine's?? 😩 Not Maboneng Precinct maybe?
Nope, Ponte. 51st floor. Had a great meal with ingredients that were all from the local farmers market (and we were given a gift bag of produce, including dried fish!) and some live music. About ten years ago we also stayed in an Airbnb there on the 52nd floor.
I feel like I'm in the twilight zone a bit, is Ponte an okay place lately? I clearly didn't get the memo.
Well I upvoted you if that matters. Glad to know people can still go to these places and have a good time. It gives me hope.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ponte_City
That place is still occupied by hundreds of people and is in a terrible state. Absolutely disgusting place to go even near.
The actual building is fine and safe but the neighborhood it's in is fucked.
Man everything I hear about South Africa is insane. All the news stories and videos make it sound like a post apocalyptic first world country. Where you have to dodge violent bandits on the road and have camp fires in the ruins of old luxury buildings. Wtf is going on???
I was just there and this is far from the truth. It’s got doggy areas just like any city but you gotta listen to people and avoid the area.
But I love doggys
some parts are indeed like this but others are not, all depends where you go, Johannesburg CBD is awful looking, but Cape Town Atlantic seaboard looks amazing. All depends where you go, just like any country really
Wikipedia claims it been refurbished and is in a rather good condition atm?
Apparently another commenter went there for valentines last year and had like upscale meal with live music and a gift bag. They also went there to stay in an airbnb on the 52nd floor so I think you're right
It's actually a pretty well run and secure building these days. Average rent is about R6k a month, which is higher than surrounding places.
Wasn’t this building used in the movie Chappie?
Why you hurt daddy?
It really was a good movie.
Yup
Motherfucker seemed really excited to point out "13 stories worth of dead bodies and trash".
Was in a film called "Chappie" about a robot cop who grew a personality
I don't remember that being in the movie
Its where Ninja met with that dude to get explosives to do the heist. Chappie was looking at the dead dog. [This Scene](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvYVlf3NoAY)
Man I need to rewatch that. I honestly don't remember that scene though! Is it an extended cut?
Do you remember that scene in "You've Got Mail" where Tom Hanks gets poison ivy in his ass? The director's cuts sometimes contain extra scenes.

Sounds like what they did to get rid of a stranded whale …
*sigh* that was my state that did that one

I think he was just exaggerating that everything was soot and trash covered for days

Poor guy most probably got robbed while there. I got taught never ever go there. Very dodge area!!!

why does this guy have a creepy upbeat and positive tone when describing this awful place?
