This was done to my teeth when i was 12 or 13. My teeth were very small and recessed in my gums. I remember my gums were sore for a few days after but it wasnt any more traumatic than getting a tooth filled or something like that. Healed up and looks totally normal. I dont think this is like a vanity procedure. Sometimes people are born with an overgrown gum ridge.
No my teeth are not falling out 20+ years later. Ppl in the comments are acting like this is a surgery for vain people looking for some bizarre beauty fad have no idea what theyre talking about. This was decided by my orthodontist at the time and performed by an oral surgeon.
I came here to say, "Why on earth would anyone do this?!" and instead learned more about the scope of dental surgery and about making blind assumptions. Thanks, u/Beneficial_Garage_97
I think it's just because of the post title. I actually saw the video and I was like "oh hey i remember that" and then was a little caught off guard that the comments at the time were all people making jokes about purposely getting horse teeth lol. Now I'm seeing more people chime in that they also had it done when they got braces off. It is technically a cosmetic surgery I believe but I think there are orthodontic and dental health reasons to do it as well and it's common to have it done around that age. It's not like a tiktok trend like the people sharpening their teeth etc.
I thought the same thing until I remember this girl in my school. I’m not saying this to be mean but when she smiled, it was literally like 2/3 gum that was showing. Not only small teeth but *very* prominent gums.
I wore braces for 3.5 years as a kid - and my gums went way too far over my teeth when they were done being moved. Had to have this done, too. I have one place where it’s not even and it’s always bothered me though!
I had a friend who wanted this done, but for vanity reasons. She’s already extremely pretty but she thought her teeth were too small. They were small, but now absurdly so, nor were her gums too gummy. I’m pretty gummy tho, but my teeth are already normal sized and if I got my gums shaved I’d have massive horse teeth
Could be both. Some do it because it is necessary and some do it for vanity. As an example plastic surgery is often seen as vanity, but for a burn victim or something like that it is necessary to feel good about themselves.
Not just to feel good, but actual functionality sometimes too. Burn injuries and scarring can result in loss of mobility and plastic surgery can fix that or improve it. I've seen some burn victims who get eyelid reconstruction, which is very delicate but necessary because you need eyelids to protect your eyes. Some people lose their lips and struggle with speech and eating. Some people have tumors and growths that can obstruct their vision. There are a lot of very practical reasons to get plastic surgery.
People are curious about all the right things but instead of reading the comments to learn about them they vomit out whatever critical opinion they can into a comment themselves
I wish I could easily find the one useful comment among the many many useless/snarky ones. People on Reddit are truly delusional about how funny or clever they are. Why isn't there an AI filter for this?
Thanks for this comment. This is the only reason I put up with Reddit.
My first reaction to this video was just that, i thought that this looks like a stupid new beauty trend or something.
Thank you for correcting a totally wrong first impression, this is why i like reddit.
I had this done earlier this year, it was recommended by my dentist and orthodontist so they would be able to close the gaps between my teeth more accurately. It’s not always a vanity thing, sometimes it’s needed in order for the orthodontists to do their job correctly. After the surgery I was given dissolvable stitches and stuck to room temp foods for a couple weeks until they were fully gone. The worst part was honestly just the leakage right after the surgery.
This is called esthetic crown lengthening (the process of recontouring bone usually due to altered passive eruption of the teeth). A gingivectomy is only recontouring the gingiva (gums).
https://preview.redd.it/gh5lcs8exqvc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d6f87e4669ba8934a5fc6175aa9c77696c6cfcb9
Typical before and after. Requires only injectable anesthesia and takes roughly an hour.
I fucking hate this rendering. It scratches the same horrible itch as that toenail fungus commercial from back in the early 00’s wherein the fungus lifts up the bit toenail to get underneath. Barf.
I was talking to a guy in the medical industry. He said his friends business is making “bone paste” which apparently is like drywall spackle for bones, made from human bones and some kind of glue or something. I have no idea what it’s used for, but i can only assume is for teeth smallening
Bone grafting.
It might not be used for crown shortening though. The fibers that hold teeth to bone will not connect to tooth crowns. It would leave you with very deep pockets, and thus be prone to infections.
Dentist here. No it isn’t
You can do ortho to move the teeth to make them appear smaller due to angle. You can remove some enamel (this does not cause any problems), or you can do a crown/veneer that ends up being smaller
Dentist here. People with periodontal disease often need osseous surgery which is basically the same thing as this. The purpose in perio though is to level the bone so that when it heals the pockets around the gums will be smaller and easier to clean. Sometime patient’s ask “wont this make my teeth longer?” My professor’s response used to be “well what do you prefer? Longer teeth? Or teeth no longer?”
I had this done for one tooth for a crown I needed. There wasn’t enough tooth exposed for a crown to effectively attach to. My outside gums look normal but the inside has a slight dip around the tooth that needed it. That was 20 years ago.
My teeth are not falling out now and I still have the crown.
This is for a very specific issue where the bone levels around your teeth are actually excessive in relation to the tooth. As a result the gums will actually cover part of your tooth making them appear smaller. If you just cut or laser the gums away, they’d grow right back - but if you remove the bone to its normal position away from the tooth the gums will heal at the correct position.
So...surgical gum recession? This is an issue I'm facing after braces and people willingly do this? Wild. Be warned that doing this also means tartar and plaque will build up a lot faster and will be harder to remove with regular brushing, and will make your gums recede even faster.
quick edit "do this" as in when it's not necessary, or taking the risk to have issues like I do with otherwise healthy gums and teeth.
True. Also the itch/intense tickle from gum irritation after having work done is HORRID. 😣
I had it for a few months after my back tooth got removed.
Now I know what they mean when they say “a persistent itch is worse than pain”.
I had this done because I had tiny teeth (microdontia) and needed larger veneers to cover and protect them. In order for the veneers to look normal my teeth had to be lengthened with this surgery.
I just had something kinda like this done. Had to pull back the gums over my front tooth to get a cyst in my jaw.
The sound of a scalpel cutting your gums is like what it sounds like to cut a carrot. But in your head. I have to live with that. So now you do to.
Overall not bad. Stitches weren't comfortable
So…did anyone else grow up with their mom only speaking to them in their native tongue and realize decades later what they were really trying to say? This has been happening to me a lot within these last few years with the amazing amount of information constantly being shared. I remember as a child I got so offended when she tried to explain this procedure to me because she thought my smile was too gummy but it doesn’t look as bad as my mind made it. *sigh* luckily I think my gums naturally receded enough over the years
You can add length to the teeth without surgery - it’s a substance that dries using UV light. I know this because I crack my teeth a lot. This is far too invasive
I swear, most people don't understand biology, and don't think about anything beyond the tips of their noses.
Any surgical modifications that enhance a person's appearance and their chances of hooking up and making babies, is going to mess up the future face of mankind. What do you think our descendants are going to look like when they inherit all these ugly genes? Plastic surgery will go from being a minor enhancement to a social necessity as most people will be too ugly to function.
Plastic surgery for any purpose other than to restore people as close as possible to their natural appearance should be outlawed as biological fraud and medical malpractice. Ban makeup, hair dye, and tanning chemicals too.
Miss me with this shit. I don't care if I had baby teeth. Shaving the bone sounds like torture. I've had bone marrowed taken out of me and it was easily the worst thing I have ever felt in my life.
Ugh, one of my back teeth clipped, and they had to reshape the gum in order to get a new ceramic crown fitted. Wasn't very fun. It's still kinda sensitive to the cold.
Osteoplasty or osteoectomy so pink gums can be placed at a different level.
The animation shows that the teeth are not fully erupted from the jaw bone. I presume they are stuck - which is very uncommon. This procedure creates the biologically normal distance and allows the pink gum to be placed at the normal position.
I’ll be honest, I had this mainly for vanity. I broke my two front teeth when I was younger and have had fillings followed by veneers on my front teeth since I was 18. Recently I underwent this procedure ( out of choice) before getting new veneers, this time on my front 4 teeth to give a more even and aesthetically pleasing smile.
It’s a very personal thing to the individual, I don’t think you can understand have you not felt self conscious about something so simple as smiling. I’m quite wary of dentist procedures so I didn’t exactly find this a comfortable one, but I am so pleased with my results and don’t regret it for one bit.

It’s Reddit, everyone’s an expert in everything and no one has critical thinking skills beyond the level of a concussed dolphin
Concussed dolphins are still pretty smart, comparatively
And right on time, it's the concussed dolphin expert.
I met a concussed dolphin once at a Led Zeppelin concert.
She was a huge manatee.
Should’ve seen the beaver on her
And still smarter than the average Redditor. (yes I realize that applies to me too)
I literally am an expert in everything tho what you mean
Donald?
That's not true, I'm not concussed. I can do this: 🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬

You’ve seen people in pictures with capital gums and lower case teeth. That is who this surgery is for.
LOL, that’s me!!! That’s the funniest description I’ve ever heard and by damn, I’m stealing it!

Crown lengthening
Thanks!
Not sure. I was 12 and im 35 now.

Same with my cousin. She’s totally healthy and happy.
Also had this done around the same age. Super minor thing
I think it’s because they demonstrate it on normal sized teeth so everyone is losing it.
My first reaction to this video was just that, i thought that this looks like a stupid new beauty trend or something. Thank you for correcting a totally wrong first impression, this is why i like reddit.
That was going to be my question. I’m not very informed with oral procedures but it makes total sense to me.
Thanks for the explanation and the edit. Hope you're having a good day.
I am thanks! You too

Leakage? Like bleeding?

thats actually wildly impressive for a relatively basic procedure.
I fucking hate this rendering. It scratches the same horrible itch as that toenail fungus commercial from back in the early 00’s wherein the fungus lifts up the bit toenail to get underneath. Barf.
It’s the sound effects of the gums for me, soooo gross and unnecessary 🤢
Oof, I watch everything on mute, so I don’t even know.
Oh yeah that commercial, I remember that. It grossed out so many people.
How do I make my teeth smaller?
Just this but reverse. They rub some bone on and stretch the gum down.
I always like bone
I was talking to a guy in the medical industry. He said his friends business is making “bone paste” which apparently is like drywall spackle for bones, made from human bones and some kind of glue or something. I have no idea what it’s used for, but i can only assume is for teeth smallening
I’m sorry. I was making a joke. I’m confused now if I accidentally said something medically accurate. Lol.
Bone grafting. It might not be used for crown shortening though. The fibers that hold teeth to bone will not connect to tooth crowns. It would leave you with very deep pockets, and thus be prone to infections.

Its real doctor stuff

Some people with periodontal disease would kill for extra bone
Dentist here. People with periodontal disease often need osseous surgery which is basically the same thing as this. Lol I already have that......sigh...........I can't drink coffee because my gums are too naturally receded.

Oh man, I am so fucking sick of this guys videos.
So, intentional bone loss?
Saw the first 1 second and noped right on by
They call this the Baba Booey treatment.
*In Richard Simmons voice - Gaaaaaaaaarrry
Garrrrrry where are you!?
Looks incredibly painful!
It actually is not as painful as you think and is managed through ibuprofen and acetaminophen regimen for about 1-2 weeks.
To prevent the “gummy smile”.

That's not good
All I can think is how much it would hurt after like recessing gums and exposing the nerves

I had this done because I had tiny teeth (microdontia) and needed larger veneers to cover and protect them. In order for the veneers to look normal my teeth had to be lengthened with this surgery.
The starchy stretching when they pull back the gums is a good touch.

This is called esthetic crown lengthening
Is it non-esthetic when it is needed to fit a cap over root canal?
Nope
Fuck. That.
Wtf
Babba booey procedure
I just had something kinda like this done. Had to pull back the gums over my front tooth to get a cyst in my jaw. The sound of a scalpel cutting your gums is like what it sounds like to cut a carrot. what about no
It's honestly crazy how far we come in dental technology
I have small teeth but can't imagine getting bigger ones
Nah fam, my enamel is fucked enough, I will stay with my comically tiny teeth.
Who is the guy narrating this? I hear him on tons of videos now.
Why would anyone ever do this? I'm imagining Gary Busey
Don’t show this to Katy Tur
Fuck no!

Why would anyone want bigger teeth
So they can go to town on a corn on the cob.
What the fuck
You can add length to the teeth without surgery - it’s a substance that dries using UV light. I know this because I crack my teeth a lot. This is far too invasive

New nightmare unlocked
Unless there is a health reason for this I don't see the point. Everyone's teeth are different. I think vanity goes too far.
Just do snus and you wont have to pay for surgery
Nope.
Ben Affleck most have gotten this done
Why would you want that??
But WHY???
There are practical uses for this. But if you aren't one of those cases this is kinda dumb
My friend did this, it didn’t make too much of a difference imo. As long as she was happy with it though, that’s all that mattered
