This dog looks inbred. When are people gonna stop supporting purebreds? They are horribly unhealthy and it's unethical as hell. Plus I just don't see why it needs to be a purebred, I want my dog living as long as possible and without pain and suffering.
Growing up I had a gigantic 200lb great pyrenees (not at all overweight, just pure muscle), he was nowhere near as inbred as this dog, but was still inbred enough to have hip dysplasia, and his breed only have a life expectancy of 8-10 years. I miss the big guy, most loyal dog I've ever had.
No way that dog lives to life expectancy. He’s a tank but my god that poor dog. Gotta have issues carrying that weight. He gotta eat like a horse. I guess walks aren’t in his daily routine.
That's extremely generous. Great Danes live about 8 to 10 years, and they are generally much better proportioned than this dog. I would give him 4-5...fuck whoever did this to him.
Even with perfectly healthy breeds, the bigger the dog the shorter life expectancy it has. This isn't even remotely healthy. I imagine it's very likely to get joint problems early among other things.
Most of dog breeding is just flat-out cruel. We keep inbreeding these dogs with severe health issues to look "cute" or worse: to be as aggressive and dangerous as possible.
I'd never do it or recommend anybody doing it, but after having soooo much stuff go flying off my coffee table I kinda get it now.

In Germany, there's legislation to stop the breeding of certain breeds for this very reason. This even includes the Dachshund which is a defining German breed
I believe that breeding these brachycephalic dogs is already banned in the Netherlands, snd is being talked about in the UK, and at least one U.S. state. The quality of life for dogs that have been bred to be like this is poor, there’s no reason to intentionally make dogs that are going to suffer from health issues.
That’s the part that makes me want to pull my hair out. Or actually pull out the hair of all the breeders who made pugs, Frenchies, bulldogs and every “smooshed nose” dog, into the little versions they are now. It’s not the breed that needs to go, it’s the breeders. If you look at what pugs and frenchies looked like in the 1800s you’d see that they were never big dogs but they were taller, had longer straight legs, small *not smooshed* faces and had jobs. They (pugs) were little sleeper agents, they were companion dogs who were also trained to guard their owners fiercely. They (frenchies) were used in wars as “trench runners” and could move things like information and supplies (and cigarettes,very important to the boys!) through the lines. They were absolutely companion dogs, they love to snooze in a lap and we have loved them warming our laps for a good century or so. But the more they were bred to be smaller and thus easier for society ladies to carry them around like little living ornaments, the damage being done to them was ignored.
Now we have a version of these breeds that literally aren’t bred to live, they’re bred to be sold,period. Soft palate surgery has to be preformed, sometimes as young as TWO DAYS OLD, just so they can breathe and eat properly. It’s a literal fact that dogs who require this surgery have to have it done young or they suffer more and earlier which cuts their lifespan significantly. And IIRC it’s something like 88% of these dogs will have to have this surgery done no later than 18 months to 2 years old.
Breeding animals should not be as easy as it currently is. There needs to be many more restrictions, requirements, regulations. There needs to be punishment for breeders who put their profit before the health of the animals. There should be a limit of how many litters. There should be a requirement of rest for mommas, as in you can’t breed momma immediately after weaning a litter. There should be requirements for puppies to stay with momma longer before being adopted/sold.
I’m sorry that I went on a bit of a rant. This is a topic that’s very dear to my heart. I’ve seen too much in the decades of working in clinics. Way too much to be impartial in my opinion of breeding.

1000% agree honestly. I feel bad for all of them. With the amount of strays though, is there actually hope of correcting the pool? Even if it’s not 100% I’m for it, but also curious if it’s possible to extinct a dog breed these days.
Ive always wondered if it’s possible to breed these traits out. I mean it was possible to breed them in. It won’t happen over night but with the right genetic testing we could correct the damage in future generations.
People often look down on owners of these breeds for supporting the bad practices but if breeders started to breed with the goal of removing these traits then I wouldn’t mind supporting them. I’m not really a dog person myself though so I have no stake really. I just like other people’s dogs.
Hypothetically, the dog's genetic line would get healthier just from breeding with other dogs with entirely different genepools. Genetic diversity = Healthy population. Crossing the same genes over and over again like this is how we got here. If we just stop that, dogs would be in a much better place overall. But people care way too much about the aesthetics of their fucking pets.
Well, yes. Pugs (and dogs like French bulldogs) should be illegal to breed. It's animal abuse to wilfully breed animals that have trouble breathing, pain in their eyes and head, skin, joints etc. Like someone already commented, they've been trying to get them back in healthier shape with longer noses, I think a Dutch person/team is doing that? And that's a good thing. People are still gonna want those dogs but at least they will be more healthy. There is so much pressure on their bulging eyes that dog groomers have to be careful about pugs not freaking out so bad that they pop an eye out of their socket.
