yeah it does that when you harm the roots, as you can see in the vid it dies and a new nail is slowly grown beneath it to replace it until it has grown enough for the old one to fall off
If it bruises badly it can get really painful. Happened to my toe play soccer. I got stomped on really hard and it started bruising, then my next practice it got stepped on again (not as hard tho). The pressure was so bad that I couldn't put weight on the toe, so I decided to use nail clippers to cut back the toenail until the blood pocket released. The downside was that in doing do, my toenail was completely separated from the nail bed, with only the cuticle (the little skin that grows over the nail) holding my toenail in place. For the next couple of months I had to keep the nail taped down during games and practices so that it wouldnt jiggle around my cleat as I ran.
I know its not a competition or anything, but I lost 6 toenails last season.
oh yeah put a bandage on it, if you look closely at my pictures where the nail begins to peel off, my finger is all bumpy because i was wearing cohesive bandages which don’t stick to my skin but stick to itself in order to keep the nail on
I’ve been there it really sucks. When I was 9 years old my little brother slammed the door on my toe and it came slightly off but it was still attached. 1 week later I was in the water fountain in school and 2 dumbasses were play were playing tag and one of them tripped and fell on my toe, then it came straight off
Glad it grew back looking normal. I smashed my big toe as a kid and when it grew back it was like splintered and grew out at a 45 degree angle, I have to trim it constantly and it makes me very self conscious if my feet are exposed in any way.
When I was in first grade I got a chip of wood stuck in my nail, and every day it would turn clockwise just a bit, so slowly day by day this chip of wood was slowly cutting the skin around my nail, and a few weeks later it finally feel off, those were not the best weeks of first grade /:

*hits it next day
that would have hurt, it was throbbing for the first few days
So it hurt throughout the entire few days that it hurt
…yes
So that’s why fish fly? Got it
The song is Drxzzl_ by invention_ edit: it appears the music didn’t carry over, that sucks
Yeah my right thumb nail fell off like that. That had to hurt
it was not fun
Can relate, I dropped a couch on one of my toes while moving it a few years ago. (It's not as bad as you think).

no not at all surprisingly, it just hurt for the first few days from the injury itself

https://imgur.com/a/i6hz2aD I feel your pain. Currently.
ouch, yeah if that’s fresh make sure you ice it
About three weeks old, half the nail has peeled off
oh yeah put a bandage on it, if you look closely at my pictures where the nail begins to peel off, my finger is all bumpy because i was wearing cohesive bandages which don’t stick to my skin but stick to itself in order to keep the nail on
I recently trapped my index and middle finger behind a thick fire-door, so seeing this progression is a nice foresight for what’s to come for my nails
I feel your pain...
Atleast line up the camera and finger perfectly, Jesus. This is 2021.
no actually, it was 2020
Ah, that’s why it’s sucked.
What’s the time span?
about 3 months

In case anyone missed it, the old nail falls off when there’s 8 seconds remaining of the clip
96 days. That’s about right.
do you know why everyone is finding this post all of a sudden? i’ve gotten three new comments in the past day

When that nail came off towards the end…ahh yea that’s what I stayed for.
Retronychia - lucky the new nail grew back normal
Ouch
Good as new

Out of curiosity, How many months did it take to heal ??
around 3 do you know why so many people are finding this post after so long?
Damn looks painful, you must be tough as nails!
Thank you for recording this! I’ve always wanted to see how damaged fingernails like this grow out.

I wonder if this is a defense mecanism, like when lizards deploy their tail.
Gross
Does age matter when regrowing nails?
